We recorded on Thursday, just hours after the funeral of a good and humble man, President Jimmy Carter. The humanitarian from Plains was praised by a parade of family and friends, led by President Biden. In contrast (unless he gets a last-second reprieve from his puppets on the Supreme Court) our next President — a narcissist who can't even spell “humble” — will be formally sentenced on 34 felony counts. Donald Trump will go down in history as the only convicted criminal to occupy the Oval Office. He's not happy about it and made that clear at another of his patent-pending bananas news conferences, events sounding like a Festivus-style airing of grievances and feats of "strength" (a.k.a. threatening anyone who disagrees with him). In Michigan, the new Legislature has convened with Republicans in control of the House … and the new Speaker giving his oversight committee broad subpoena power. Will Matt Hall bring us a revival of the infamous Rudy Guiliani farts-and-lies hearing he hosted in 2021? Republicans in Michigan and across the nation have targeted transgender women, especially the handful participating in sports, as their culture war of the year project. This week the attacks extended to the U.S. House of Representatives where a new rule was added to ban newly elected Representative Sarah McBride, the first transgender House member, from using the women's bathroom. We are joined by someone who is helping lead the fight in the 2025 Civil Rights battle: Emme Zanotti, director of advocacy and civic engagement at Equality Michigan. In a study of contrasts, Donald Trump and Trump wannabes are gathered in Indianapolis as we recorded this week's podcast. They are all paying homage to the National Rifle Association at the gun manufacturing groups annual convention … even as Governor Whitmer signs two more gun safety laws opposed by the NRA into law with state and national leaders of March for Our Lives at her side…and additional laws working their way through the Legislature. The national debate over reproductive rights grows even more heated. Just before we started recording, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito — who wrote the Dobbs decision overturning Roe – has issued a short stay on the Texas court ban on the abortion drug mifopristone. In Michigan, the Governor and Attorney General have joined forces with their Democratic counterparts nationally in challenging the initial court finding. We'll talk about the how this debate is nothing but bad news for Republicans. It's not just reproductive rights under national attack. Republican legislatures across the nation have declared war on transgender Americans. We're joined on the pod this week by Emme Zanotti, Director of Advocacy and Civic Engagement, for the Equality Michigan Action Network.  Emme is a dedicated advocate for equality with integral roles in candidate campaign management, statewide caucus leadership, progressive coalition advisory, non-profit board service, and enhancing LGBTQ+ issue awareness and protections in the private sector. Danielle Woods is a Detroit native and 16-year veteran with the Detroit Police Department. She is currently assigned to the Chief's Neighborhood Liaison unit where she coordinates and oversees the operations of the Citizen Radio Patrol. She recalls responding to a domestic violence disturbance in 2006 that was between two females who were romantically involved. Her male partner at the time made an offensive remark about the couple's sexual orientation. Woods was so upset that she approached her boss about the need for a community liaison officer for the LGBT community. Woods was appointed the Detroit Police Department's first LGBT liaison officer in 2013. She formulated the first LGBT Advisory Board Committee under the appointment of Chief James E. Craig and is a driving force in the LGBT community in her efforts of "Bridging the Gap" between law enforcement and the LGBT community. Woods says her role as LGBT liaison is to "serve as a bridge between the LGBT community and the police department," helping to build mutual trust, respect, and understanding between the two groups. She works closely with LGBT organizations within Detroit and surrounding areas, including Equality Michigan, the Ruth Ellis Center, Affirmations, and LGBT Detroit, and serves on an LGBT advisory board whose goal is to advocate for the LGBT community and make sure their concerns are heard.

With the Supreme Court decision on June 26th same sex couples won the right to marry nationwide. Todd ReSean will join Can WE TALK FOR REAL, co-host Terry Boi and Michelle to discuss his journey to adopt his son Taylen. Todd, a single father would like to motivate more men to adopt and give a child a loving home. He is still in the process but would like to share his hopes and dreams for his son and encourage others to do the same. Todd is slated to return to the stage in the starring role of Roommates, a John Ruffin production. He is currently the vocal arranger and lyricist for the Chicago theater group, Theater47 of which RaSean has worked with productions such as DreamGirl and The Color Purple, He is currently an advocate for LGBT men to become fathers. Roland Leggett will also talk about the importance of lifting up Black fathers in our community, celebrating the difference they make and the ups (like attending daddy/daughter dances) and the downs (like being ditched by his daughter at the daddy/daughter dance). A nationally recognized community activist and movement leader with many years of social justice advocacy experience, his resume includes bringing progressive leadership to several organizations including the ACLU of Detroit, Equality Michigan and Working America. He and his partner, the Rev. Matthew Bode were married in 2014 and are very visible in metro-Detroit’s LGBTQ community. Roland is a leader on many levels both locally and nationally but his most important role is that of Dad. Father’s Day is Sunday June 21,2015. We’ll be celebrating all fathers – adopted, biological, and foster as well as others who step up and step in to this important role in the lives of our children.
