Alex shares how navigating seasons of feeling overlooked shaped her leadership, why encouragement is essential for long-term creative health, and how she helps younger creatives develop confidence without tying their worth to performance or platform. They also discuss the importance of continuing to grow as a leader, creating space for others to flourish, and what Alex would say to the creative who feels unseen right now. The Future of Workforce Development & Talent with PJ McGrew Brought to you by End-to-End Services and Lightleap AI (lightleapai.com) Guest: PJ McGrew, SVP of Talent Strategy and Programming, Conexus Indiana Episode Summary Host Dr. Rod Berger sits down with PJ McGrew to explore how Indiana is rethinking workforce development for the modern manufacturing era. PJ shares his journey from state government to Conexus Indiana, and how a network of 130+ manufacturing companies is co-designing education pipelines that prepare students for an AI- and automation-driven future. Key Topics Covered PJ's Background – From the Center for Education and Career Innovation under Governor Pence, to Chief of Staff at the State Board of Education, to Education Policy Advisor under Governors Pence and Holcomb, to the Governor's Workforce Cabinet — PJ's career traces the evolution of Indiana's education-workforce alignment efforts. Conexus Indiana & the Industry Talent Association – How Conexus, part of the CEOs of Indiana Corporate Partnership, brings together 130+ manufacturers to identify workforce needs and influence the education system accordingly. Skills-First, Not Job-First – Manufacturers pushed for building broad, foundational skills over narrow occupational training — recognizing that integrated, cross-functional roles are becoming the norm on the modern factory floor. The Retirement Cliff – 30%+ of Indiana's manufacturing workforce is over 55. Recruiting the next generation through exciting, technology-forward programming is critical. New Indiana Diploma Seals – Approved in December 2024, six new diploma seals include three that require work-based learning (75–650 hours), creating formal pathways for apprenticeships and internships. The Modern Apprenticeship Model – Inspired by Switzerland and Germany's employer-led vocational systems, Indiana's apprenticeship pilot (launched 2020) has served ~600 students. A new occupational standard is being ratified with 6 employers hosting ~10 apprentices in an upcoming pilot phase. Earn Indiana Program – A work-study-style program offsetting ~50% of intern/apprentice wages, lowering the barrier for employers to engage students early. Blind Spots in the System – Fragmented funding streams, transportation barriers, lack of local intermediaries, and siloed program design are key challenges that need system-level solutions. Cross-State Learning – Indiana was an early mover on industry talent associations; now states like Colorado are adopting the model. Cross-state knowledge sharing is active but nuanced, given regional differences. Pathway Consolidation – Plans to consolidate Indiana's 10 manufacturing CTE pathways into fewer, competency-aligned tracks to reduce confusion and better match employer needs. Quotes to Remember "If we're gonna design this new system, we need to show students that they can have a career in manufacturing." "Listening to employers earlier in the process means students are better prepared — and employers save on retraining costs." "We need local intermediaries to translate what employers need into what schools and students can actually access." Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Ruth Leonard of Lacey, Washington - the granddaughter of Mabel of Lebam. Ruth's grandmother's full name was Mabel Pearl Goodell Thompson. Mabel's father, Jotham Goodell founded the community of Half Moon, in what's now Pacific County along Highway 6, about midway between the communities of Frances and Holcomb . When the US Post Office rejected "Half Moon" for the post office there circa 1890, Jotham Goodell came up with an alternate: Lebam, which was his three or four-year-old daughter Mabel's name spelled backward. In this conversation, Ruth Leonard brings her grandmother to life through memories of Mabel and of the community of Lebam. Mabel Pearl Goodell Thompson, who gets no more than a sentence or two in Washington state placename books as Lebam's namesake, is rendered by her granddaughter as a three-dimensional human being. CASCADE OF HISTORY spoke with Ruth Leonard on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. March 9, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 103 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday morning show, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly re-signing two of their own unrestricted free agents in CB Asante Samuel Jr. and ILB Cole Holcomb. We go over the reported contract terms for each player and discuss if the Holcomb re-signing could result in ILB Malik Harrison being cut soon. It sounds like free agent CB James Pierre might have a healthy market should the Steelers not re-sign him by Wednesday afternoon, so we discuss that bit of news that came in on Sunday. The Baltimore Ravens are trading for former Las Vegas Raiders EDGE Maxx Crosby as of this weekend, so Alex and I discuss the compensation given and whether that was a good decision made by the AFC North team. The cornerback position group appears set to have a new APY leader by the middle of the week and with that expected to happen, Alex and I discuss what that will likely mean when it comes to an offseason contract extension for CB Joey Porter Jr. We go over Porter's perceived market value floor entering the start of the NFL league year. We also discuss the career earnings for Porter's father, Joey Porter Sr. The annual NFL free agent tampering period gets underway on Monday at noon and because of that, there's a lot of news to pass along related to several teams. We go over the headlines of trades and re-signings that we know about while this show was being recorded. Alex and I discuss whether the Steelers will ultimately restructure the contract of OLB T.J. Watt this offseason and the pros and cons related to that topic. We also discuss when a Watt restructuring will likely happen this offseason if it even happens at all. Alex and I close this episode out by going over several high-profile players around the NFL that we will be watching closely throughout the next few days when it comes to the legal NFLK free agent tampering period and beyond. This 54-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the above recap. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss the first day of NFL free agency (contact period). The Steelers and Colts struck a deal sending WR Michael Pittman Jr. to the Steelers for a late-round pick swap. They also signed Jamel Dean to a three-year deal and brought back Asante Samuel Jr. and Cole Holcomb. Does the Holcomb deal tell us anything about Patrick Queen's future? The team also lost Kenny Gainwell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What do we make of all these moves and what do we believe is next? Let's go for another Steelers Afternoon Drive and discuss all this! The Rickey Smiley Morning Show opens with rising concern over the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, as investigators confirm that the ransom deadline has passed with no further communication from suspected abductors. According to recent reports, law enforcement is still working around the clock and has released new surveillance images showing an armed individual tampering with the front‑door camera around the time she vanished. Savannah Guthrie continues pleading to the public for assistance as the FBI maintains a 24‑hour command post and stresses its need for credible tips. Corey Holcomb brought his unfiltered energy to The Madd Hatta Show, delivering blunt truths about fame, relationships, and Hollywood's hidden politics. Known for his fearless honesty stand-up style, Holcomb opened up about the lessons pain has taught him, why he refuses to play the industry's “wicked” games, and how the streets — not the system — made him a star. From calling out marriage contracts to teasing his upcoming film plans, Holcomb proved once again why he's one of comedy's most unapologetic voices.
I tell my money coaching clients all the time that if their health isn't right, it doesn't matter how great their money is—they won't be able to make the most of it. You could have a six-figure salary and a robust investment portfolio, but if you're mentally and emotionally depleted from constantly putting everyone else first, none of it brings you peace or fulfillment. Mental health is something that doesn't get anywhere near enough attention, especially for women who are taught from a young age to be caregivers, nurturers, and people-pleasers. It impacts so many areas of our lives…our relationships, our career decisions, our spending habits, our ability to set boundaries…and deserves to always be a priority, not an afterthought. That's why I couldn't be more excited to welcome licensed marriage and family therapist Dr. Jamila Holcomb to the show today. With over a decade of experience helping individuals and families, plus her work mentoring future therapists at Florida State University, Dr. Holcomb brings invaluable insight into the people-pleasing patterns that keep so many women stuck. In this conversation, we're diving deep into how women can stop people pleasing and start prioritizing their own happiness, and how their mental health (and even their finances) will benefit as a result. As we look to close out another year, make sure you're starting 2026 with a renewed sense of self-love, worthiness, and healthy boundaries. Here's What You'll Learn in This Episode: Recognizing subtle signs you're stuck in people-pleasing patterns The connection between people-pleasing, burnout, and mental health How childhood and cultural expectations shape caregiving behaviors Practical first steps to start prioritizing your own needs without guilt The role of self-worth in breaking free from people-pleasing How people-pleasing shows up in money habits and financial boundaries Setting healthy boundaries for emotional, mental, and financial wellness Self-reflection practices to build self-trust as you enter the new year The Mental Health-Money Connection: People-pleasing doesn't just drain you emotionally—it shows up in your bank account too. From overspending on others to avoiding financial boundaries, learn how prioritizing yourself mentally leads to better financial decisions and true wealth. Here's a glance at this episode: [03:00] Dr. Holcomb's Journey: Over a decade in mental health therapy and what drew her to this field. [07:45] Irritability is a common symptom prescribed to women and Jamila believes it's connected to women overextending themselves. [17:57] Reclaiming Personal Time: Creating a list of neglected activities and how to reintegrate them. [30:08] Overwhelm is personal and systemic. It's important to remember that empowering yourself is a start to impacting the overall system. [36:21] Money and Self-Worth: How finances become tools for justifying worth and gaining love through people-pleasing. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik goes straight at a common executive myth: “lonely at the top.” Former CEO, five-time Ironman, and Arcqus Group founder Dusty Holcomb breaks down how isolation is often a self-selected operating system—rooted in fear and perfectionism—and how to replace it with connection discipline. We unpack identity vs. title, minimum viable discipline, keystone reflections, and why leaders should be obsessed with asking better questions, not having all the answers. About the Guest: Dusty Holcomb is an operator-turned-coach, former CEO, five-time Ironman, and founder of The Arcqus Group. He hosts the podcast Leadership Unlocked and has kept a 28-year streak of daily leadership reflections focused on character, clarity, and service. Key Takeaways: Isolation is often a self-selected stance driven by fear of being “the one with all the answers”; leadership is about ensuring the right questions are asked and answered. Adopt a beginner's mind: “Help me understand what I might be missing” invites collaboration without weaponizing questions. Shift from being interesting to being interested; curiosity is the fastest on-ramp to trust and connection. Identity beats perfection: define your minimum viable discipline (e.g., 100 pushups/100 situps, a short walk) so the habit survives travel, fatigue, and chaos. Pre-decide for success: make the important thing easy (systems and prep the night before) and give yourself grace when you miss—then immediately resume. Titles are temporary; you're a steward of a role. Prioritize permanent roles (parent/partner/human) so work doesn't swallow your life. Keystone moments come from reflection; journaling codifies lessons you've “paid tuition” for and lets others benefit. Build an external mentorship/counsel loop; leadership doesn't have to be lonely when you design for connection. Tactical this week: schedule one 15-minute listening block with a teammate; prune one commitment and define the replacement behavior.
