Boldness looks different when you're a gay dad, a former Broadway dancer, and raising a toddler named Maverick in Florida. To kick off Pride Month, John Corella is joined by Bret and Stephen, Broadway performers, husbands, and proud dads, who offer an honest look at parenting, partnership, and identity. They talk about raising their son Maverick with intention, finding joy in everyday moments, and the kind of quiet courage it takes to show up as a two-dad family in spaces built for straight families. Where does boldness come from when the world keeps trying to put you in a box? What does it mean to raise a child who sees authenticity modeled at home? Through stories about sobriety, social media, and their dance competition backgrounds, Bret and Stephen reflect on what has shaped them and what they hope to pass on. This episode questions the norms that still dominate parenting culture and the dance world, and it offers a reminder that being seen can be a radical act of love. LGBTQ+ seniors in Indianapolis are at the center of a new effort to ensure they're not left behind. The Elder Pride Indy Collaborative just released results from a key community survey. The survey, led by the Damien Center, is part of a larger plan to close gaps for the LGBTQ+ older adults. Now that the responses are in, organizers say it's time to act.The needs assessment also revealed concerns such as the lack of LGBTQ+-affirming healthcare, mental health support, fears of discrimination in long-term housing, and difficulties connecting with local resources. Many people said they wanted a dedicated community center. The organization is considering forming an advocacy network that includes representatives from various local groups to address ongoing needs. They're also planning to create an information hub to help people stay informed and connected.Another public survey will likely be conducted next year.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Asian American Pacific Islander Pride is about creating safe spaces. It's also a celebration of culture and identity and visibility, and, for many, a moment to finally feel seen.Indy Pride aims to uplift Asian American Pacific Islander voices within the LGBTQ+ community, voices that are often overlooked. The organization on May 16 had its third annual AAPI Pride Celebration at 10 East Arts Hub, filled with comedians, drag queens, and traditional foods and performances. Castillo Jimenez says this year's celebration had a great turnout with over 60 people celebrating their identity. He is glad that the Asian American Pacific Islander LGBTQ+ community has expanded over the last few years. “Indy Pride started with a not-so-good representation. It was mainly white cisgendered individuals, and, I think, five years to now, we've made diversity and inclusion the center of who we are.”Indy Pride plans to make the 2026 Asian American Pacific Islander Pride celebration even bigger, and hopes the community supports Asian American Pacific Islander LGBTQ+ Hoosiers beyond Pride month in June.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Happy Pride Month! On today's episode we're discussing an important partnership in Nevada that provides safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community to recreate outdoors, build a relationship with nature and build a sense of belonging. We learned about this partnership when Mihaela Genova, Volunteer Program Manager for Get Outdoors Nevada, submitted a photo (pictured) featuring Angelique Burton, director of advocacy of The Pride Tree, contributing to her community by volunteering for public land maintenance activities at the National Wildlife Refuge outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. The event Burton volunteered for offered insight into how marginalized communities have historically been excluded from outdoor spaces. Events like this one, part of a partnership between Get Outdoors Nevada and The Pride Tree, illustrate the impact that can be made when groups come together for a common goal. We were thrilled to talk with a few individuals about this partnership to learn more: Grant Frailich, Founder of The Pride Tree Shelly Kopinski, Director of Programs, Get Outdoors Nevada Mihaela Genova, Volunteer Program Manager, Get Outdoors Nevada Tune in below to learn about this important partnership and how it is supporting the LGBTQ+ community, as well as fostering connections between nature and community. In this episode, we're celebrating Pride Month with author Derek Milman. Derek talks with host Suzanne McCabe about his latest YA novel, A Darker Mischief. The gripping story revolves around Cal, a queer teen from a poor town in Mississippi. At Essex Academy, an elite boarding school in New England, Cal tries to fit in and falls in love along the way. “I would encourage any teen picking up A Darker Mischief,” Derek says, “to see how Cal can surmount everything that has happened in the past and his sense of unbelonging and intense alienation to find love.” In addition to A Darker Mischief, Derek is the author of the acclaimed Scream All Night (Balzer + Bray, 2018) and Swipe Right for Murder (Jimmy Patterson, 2021). A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Derek has performed on stages across the country and appeared in several TV shows and films, including The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). → Resources A Darker Mischief: Check out Derek Milman's boarding school thriller about a queer teen named Cal, who finds himself swept up into a world of old money and privilege privilege. The fight against ideological colonization in the Philippines has made it to an international news website. Olivia has been globe-trotting (nation-trotting?) nearly as much as Nicole these days, but she has had time to binge season 3 of Regency-era sex-sation Bridgerton (and do her laundry). Nicole is still on a thriller book-kick, devouring Nerves of Steel about pilot Tammie Jo Shults and her daring emergency landing, and she and Shauna both consumed some Glen Powell content recently. Somehow that leads to a vote on which anthropormorphic rodent is the hottest, and sorry to say, but Glen came in last place. Then it's on to the heart of this episode: celebrating Pride Month while looking back at the highs and lows of how pop culture has represented members of the LGBTQ community. From the ground-breaking 1968 movie The Queen to the 1990s and the increasing acceptance of gay characters on television to recent high profile movies like Moonlight, the Junkies talk about how much representation has increased - and how there is still so much room for improvement. This month, we are celebrating Pride with a brand new series! We'll explore how the 1980s AIDS crisis in San Francisco led to the birth of medical cannabis and sparked a national legalization movement. Before our series begins next week, we hope you'll enjoy an episode from the Stereotypes: Straight Talk from Queer Voices podcast, hosted by award-winning journalist Christopher Beale. You will hear the story of Jim Mitulski, a gay pastor who provided cannabis for compassionate use to dying AIDS patients through his church and broadened the definition of medical cannabis. Tune in to hear his inspiring story of courage and advocacy. “I took a risk. I used my body. I acted on a belief that was motivated by my desire to provide healing and comfort for my friends. I didn't know what else to do that I could do, but this was something I could do.” - Jim Mitulski If you enjoyed this episode, we'd recommend Episode 133, Weed Words: Marijuana- Unpacking It's Complicated History.
