With the help of security cameras, license plate readers, and other technology, "it's almost impossible to commit a crime on the streets of Detroit and really get away with it," says new Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison."As far as being able to bring justice to crime victims, we're in a much better position to do it," Bettison says in an interview on Face to Face With Adolph Mongo, a special edition of the podcast Detroit in Black and White.Bettison said new technology has helped bring the homicide clearance rate to just short of 100 percent, and about 90 percent for non-fatal shootings.

Ex-Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who is running for mayor, hopes to capitalize on his years as police chief. He served as chief from 2013 to 2021."I established a strong reputation here as the Detroit police chief," Craig told Adolph Mongo in a special edition of Detroit in Black and White on Friday. "People know me. They understood and watched me lead for eight years."Craig said he also hopes voters don't put him "in a box" and only look at him as a Republican, though he's proud to be one.He realizes the last Republican mayor of Detroit was Louis C. Miriani, who was first elected in the 1950s.
