Helen Meech is Executive Director of the Climate Coalition, the UK's largest group of organisations dedicated to action on people, climate and nature. Over 130 member organisations, from the National Trust to Oxfam to Save the Children, plus a network of around 3,500 community organisers across the UK. And yet most people have never heard of them. As Helen explains, that's deliberate. We talk about Great Big Green Week, the Coalition's flagship campaign, running this year from 6 to 14 June. It has more than doubled in size every year for three years: 250,000 people, then 600,000, then 1.2 million last year, with around 2 million expected this year. The stat that matters most: over a third of attendees had never engaged with climate or nature before. They came because someone they knew organised something, or because it was free to do with the kids on a Saturday. We also dig into where power actually sits. Helen's framing, "creating the space for politics to move into," challenges the idea that change is something politicians do to us. And we compare notes on the People's Emergency Briefing, which we recently screened at the Grange Hub, and the tension every communicator in this space wrestles with: realism versus hope. The post-interview chat gets into Tom's view that the era of being polite about the emergency is over, Chloe's case for hope grounded in community rather than technology, and why we still don't have a Help for Heroes equivalent for the climate movement.About the guestHelen Meech is Executive Director of the Climate Coalition. She has spent 25 years in environmental campaigning and movement-building, including roles at the National Trust and the RSPB, where she was Head of Movement Building and led the development of the People's Plan for Nature. Her work is built on a single belief: people are powerful, especially when they come together. The Climate Coalition: theclimatecoalition.org Great Big Green Week: greatbiggreenweek.comChapters00:00 - Welcome and intros 01:30 - Grange update: screening the People's Emergency Briefing at the Hub 04:30 - Watching hard truths in community, and why that changes the experience 06:55 - Tom's case: the days of being polite about the emergency are over 07:30 - Wilder Connections summer programme: co-design with young people 10:57 - Who is the Climate Coalition? 14:59 - Why most people haven't heard of the Climate Coalition (on purpose) 17:24 - "Creating the space for politics to move into" 20:05 - Everyone has power: protest, community organising, media, culture 22:18 - Great Big Green Week: nightclubs, litter picks, fetes and school assemblies 23:59 - The infrastructure behind 6,000 local events 29:54 - Flooded pitches: why grassroots sport is organising 30:30 - The unexpected challenge: keeping the big NGOs on board 32:43 - Greenwashing and a brand with a life of its own 34:15 - The Coalition's three policy asks 36:50 - The five million target, and matching Children in Need for awareness 39:43 - Helen's reaction to the People's Emergency Briefing 42:28 - Rebecca Solnit and hope as an action 44:35 - How to get involved in Great Big Green Week 46:03 - Tom and Chloe debrief: community action vs direct action 48:27 - The 3.5% rule, and whether the research still holds 50:45 - The school drop-off apology problem: why we need a safe movement to belong to 53:40 - Hope vs fear: did the briefing get the balance right? Key takeawaysOver a third of Great Big Green Week attendees have never engaged with climate or nature before. They come because the event is organised by someone they know, connected to a community they're already part of, or simply free to do with the kids. Over 80% of those newcomers wanted to do more afterwards.Great Big Green Week has more than doubled in size every year for three years, and reached a media audience of over 60 million last year. Around 11% of the UK population recognises it when prompted, on a par with campaigns that have run for decades.Helen's core argument about power: if we say politicians are the only ones with power, we're handing ours to them. The Coalition's job is to make the public mandate visible so politicians have space to move into. The Coalition's three policy asks: climate finance flowing where it's most needed, fairness at the heart of climate action (bills, jobs, just transition), and the urgent protection and restoration of nature.Fear needs to be combined with agency. Helen cites the Branding Biodiversity report: hard-hitting information without a path to action paralyses people. Twenty-five years into her career, the People's Emergency Briefing still made her cry. Her response was to write a to-do list.Hope is an action, not a mood. Rebecca Solnit's framing: pessimists and optimists both excuse themselves from doing anything.Resources and links mentionedOrganisations and campaignsThe Climate Coalition: theclimatecoalition.orgGreat Big Green Week (6-14 June 2026): greatbiggreenweek.comNational Emergency Briefing / People's Emergency Briefing, including the screening map and how to host one: nebriefing.orgWilder Connections, Chloe's charity growing a movement for nature connection in young people: wilderconnections.charityClimate Psychology Alliance (facilitation training Chloe mentioned): climatepsychologyalliance.orgMore in Common (audience segmentation partner): moreincommon.org.ukBristol Stepping SistersNational Trust, RSPB, Oxfam, Save the Children, Co-op (Coalition members referenced)Ideas and referencesRebecca Solnit, Hope in the DarkJoanna Macy, Active Hope: activehope.infoBranding Biodiversity report (Futerra): fear combined with agencyThe 3.5% rule (Erica Chenoweth's research on nonviolent resistance)The People's Plan for Nature: peoplesplanfornature.orgCome and stay with usIf this conversation has you craving time somewhere slower, our off-grid cabins sit in a quiet corner of Monmouthshire surrounded by 80 acres of recovering nature. Amnesty International says it's entirely possible for New Zealand to take on big tech. Several media companies, industry groups and other organisations have signed an Amnesty open letter, calling for a stronger crack down on digital platforms like TikTok and Facebook. They're calling for an independent regulator to manage risks like fraud, extremist content, and misinformation. Amnesty International NZ Movement Building & Advocacy Director Lisa Woods told Heather du Plessis-Allan we already hold other big companies to account. She says they want big tech platforms to face requirements such as a duty of care, to identify and reduce risks, and explain how their systems work. Peaceful Political Revolution in America

When people talk about democracy in America, we often focus on elections… on candidates… on the latest headlines coming out of Washington. But the deeper question—the one that shapes everything—is this: Who actually holds power in our society? Is it the people? Is it our communities? Or is it wealth… concentrated power… and institutions that were never designed to answer to ordinary citizens? Today's episode is all about movement building. Not the kind of movement-building calling for protests or boycotts. Not the kind of movement building that fades when yet another crisis emerges …But the kind of movement building that reshapes the legal and political foundations of our society. The Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, or CELDF, has been at the forefront of a remarkable experiment in democracy. An experiment that asks a simple but radical question: What if communities had the legal authority to defend their own environment… their own health… and their own future?Ben Price serves as the National Education Director at CELDF, where he has spent more than two decades helping communities organize, learn, and take action. He has mentored local leaders across the country as they developed ordinances asserting community rights and the legal rights of ecosystems. His book, How Wealth Rules the World: Saving Our Communities and Freedoms from the Dictatorship of Property, examines how modern law has evolved to prioritize property and wealth over democracy and community self-government. The book earned the Independent Publishing Award's Silver Medal in Finance, Investment, and Economics, and it has sparked important conversations about the relationship between law, economics, and democratic power. What makes Ben's work especially important for our conversation today is that he doesn't just analyze problems. He works directly with communities trying to solve them. Communities asking: How do we organize? How do we build durable movements? How do ordinary people reclaim authority over decisions that affect their land, water, and future? And perhaps most importantly, how do we build movements that are strong enough to challenge systems that have been in place for generations? These are exactly the kinds of questions we need to explore if we are serious about creating a more democratic constitutional order in America.Constitutions don't change simply because people write some ideas down on a piece of paper. They change when movements emerge that are powerful enough to demand something better for everyone. Ben Price has spent years helping communities wrestle with the practical realities of movement building—what works, what doesn't, and what it really takes to transform political power from the ground up.Today, we're going to talk about organizing… democracy… and the long road toward structural change. Ben, welcome to the Peaceful Political Revolution in America podcast.LINKS:https://celdf.org/https://celdf.org/resources/multimedia/https://celdf.org/resources/blog/https://celdf.substack.com/

Or on the types of prioritization, their strengths, pitfalls, and how EA should balance them The cause prioritization landscape in EA is changing. Prominent groups have shut down, others have been founded, and everyone is trying to figure out how to prepare for AI. This is the first in a series of posts examining the state of cause prioritization and proposing strategies for moving forward. Executive Summary Performing prioritization work has been one of the main tasks, and arguably achievements, of EA. We highlight three types of prioritization: Cause Prioritization, Within-Cause (Intervention) Prioritization, and Cross-Cause (Intervention) Prioritization. We ask how much of EA prioritization work falls in each of these categories: Our estimates suggest that, for the organizations we investigated, the current split is 89% within-cause work, 2% cross-cause, and 9% cause prioritization.     This week on Revenue Rehab, Brandi Starr is joined by Karthi Ratnam, a category design expert who believes that creating movements, not just products, is the key to market success—and she's ready to prove it. In this episode, they challenge the notion that category creation is prohibitively expensive and slow, arguing instead that a bold vision and leadership can redefine industries and drive exponential growth. From debunking myths to offering strategic insights, Karthi lays out her case for why revenue leaders need to rethink their approach to category design before it's too late. Do they have it right, or will you change their mind?  Episode Type: Problem Solving  Industry analysts, consultants, and founders take a bold stance on critical revenue challenges, offering insights you won't hear anywhere else. These episodes explore common industry challenges and potential solutions through expert insights and varied perspectives.  Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers:  Topic #1: Challenging the High Cost Myth of Category Design [04:24]  Karthi Ratnam challenges the belief that it's prohibitively expensive to create a new category, labeling this a myth that holds companies back. She argues that the real barrier is not financial but rather a lack of vision and willingness to take risks, comparing it to wanting to go to heaven without the willingness to take necessary steps. Brandi Starr highlights the comfort companies feel with established practices, leading to a discussion on the necessity of disrupting the status quo to lead a market.  Topic #2: Building a Movement vs. Building a Brand [09:24]  Karthi Ratnam differentiates between building a movement and a brand, using historical movements as analogies for category creation. She suggests that movement builders prioritize the category and problem over the brand, highlighting Apple's journey as an example. This challenges traditional marketing practices, prompting Brandi to ask how this approach applies to companies that aren't inherently personal, especially in B2B markets.  Topic #3: The Role of a Charismatic Founder in Movement Building [13:39]  Karthi Ratnam emphasizes that successful category creation hinges on a dynamic and charismatic founder who can rally support beyond conventional marketing. The discussion challenges the notion that any company can build a movement, with Karthi arguing that not everyone should attempt category creation. Brandi questions how this applies in larger organizations where the personality of a single leader might not be the focal point, emphasizing the balance between idealism and operational effectiveness.  The Wrong Approach vs. Smarter Alternative  The Wrong Approach: “So the wrong way to do it right, is to be very myopic about it, to think extremely short term in that, to assume that A, because you're creating a category, you're going to win, like really, really fast, you're going to see wins, but that exponential growth takes a little bit of time.” – Karthi Ratnam  Why It Fails: This approach fails because creating a category is not about quick wins; it involves longer-term vision and effort. Companies that expect immediate results may become discouraged when they don't materialize, which can lead to abandoning the initiative prematurely. It's about more than just investment—it's about having the vision and courage to disrupt existing norms.  The Smarter Alternative: Companies should recognize that while they can see wins along the way, the journey to category dominance involves gradual exponential growth. Leaders must commit to a long-term vision, focusing on truly disruptive innovation rather than just financial considerations. Embrace the risk of the unknown and be prepared to weather the challenges along the path to establishing a new category.  The Most Damaging Myth  The Myth: “The biggest myth is that it's super expensive to create a category, and it's really hard to have it realize potential in the short and medium term.” – Karthi Ratnam  Why It's Wrong: Companies often hide behind the belief that financial constraints are their main barrier to category creation when, in fact, it is the lack of vision and willingness to take risks that truly hold them back. This myth causes organizations to remain static, instead of embracing disruptive opportunities that could redefine their market position.  What Companies Should Do Instead: Focus on a strong vision and have the courage to disrupt the status quo. Companies should prioritize innovative thinking and be willing to navigate the uncertainties of creating new categories to lead movements that matter.  The Rapid-Fire Round  Finish this sentence: If your company is trying to create a category, the first thing you should do is _  "Have the founders start evangelizing your point of view." – Karthi Ratnam  What's one red flag that signals a company has a category problem—but might not realize it yet?  "Lack of alignment on the point of view."  What's the most common mistake people make when trying to fix this?  "Becoming emotional."  What's the fastest action someone can take today to make progress?  "Take the first step."  Buzzword Banishment  Karthi's buzzword to banish is "revenue marketer." She dislikes this term because she believes all marketing should inherently be in service of revenue, making the distinction unnecessary. Karthi argues that separating "revenue marketers" from other marketers suggests a false divide, diminishing the contributions of brand marketers who also aim to drive revenue.   Links:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karthiratnam/  Subscribe, listen, and rate/review Revenue Rehab Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts , Amazon Music, or iHeart Radio and find more episodes on our website RevenueRehab.live

A woman who loves other women, sexually and/or nonsexually. Appreciates and prefers women's culture, women's emotional flexibility ... and women's strength. ... Committed to survival and wholeness of entire people, male and female. Not a separatist, except periodically, for health ... Loves music. Loves dance. Loves the moon. Loves the Spirit ... Loves struggle. Loves the folk. Loves herself. Regardless. Womanist is to feminist as purple is to lavender.About AngelaAngela Tyler-Williams (She/Her) is proud to serve as the Co-Executive Director for Movement Building at SACReD. (Conversation recorded on July 17th, 2024)   Addressing the risks we face on a global scale is a challenge that can feel both enormous in execution and personally daunting. When it comes to finding the motivation and inspiration to do such work, one of the best sources of insight comes from the visionaries and activists who have come before us, who know what it takes to battle – and successfully transform – entrenched systems of power. What advice and wisdom can we learn from their stories and experience?  In this episode, Nate is joined by Mamphela Ramphele, co-founder of the Black Consciousness Movement, which was instrumental in building the ideological foundation that galvanized the struggle for Liberation under the apartheid regime in South Africa, ultimately leading to its dismantling. She shares her wisdom gained from over five decades of movement building and liberation as a means of structural change; something that is deeply relevant to positive outcomes during the coming Great Simplification.  What does it mean to be self-liberated and what role does this process play in propeling shifts in cultural values? How can we work across and within generations to create movements that transcend immediate and near term-goals? Is it possible to create policies founded on a deeper set of values- - and could doing so encourage more people to become ‘Guardians of the Planet'?   About Mamphela Ramphele: Dr. Mamphela Ramphele has had a celebrated career as an activist, global public servant, academic, businesswoman and thought leader. Dr. Ramphele was co-founder of The Black Consciousness Movement with Steve Biko that reignited the struggle for freedom in South Africa. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology, is a medical doctor, and is the co-founder of ReimagineSA, the former co-president of The Club of Rome, and is the Chair at the Desmond Tutu IP Trust.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on Youtube   --- Support Institute for the Study of Energy and Our Future Join our Substack newsletter Join our Discord channel and connect with other listeners
