The chilling experiences of victims echo loudly even amidst the heralded triumph of Ireland's recently enacted legislation, which finally recognises stalking as a standalone offence. New legislation for stalking in Ireland has been delayed since last year. A new offence of stalking has been proposed by the Government but has yet to be acted upon. In comparison it's been announced that since Northern Ireland brought in new stalking laws a year ago, 88 people have been arrested and 47 people have been charged. Eve is a stalking victim, who has used her personal experience to campaign for the introduction of laws against stalking in Ireland. She was followed relentlessly from first thing in the morning to last thing at night by a man with a fixation on her. He was eventually jailed for breaking into her home and attacking her housemate with a hammer and was released earlier this month. Eve told us about her experience and her ongoing fight for dedicated laws against stalking in Ireland to protect those going through similar situations. Gardaí have eliminated a 40-year-old man from their inquiries into the murder of Ashling Murphy in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Ashling, a 23-year-old primary school teacher, was attacked and killed on the banks of the Grand Canal on Wednesday afternoon. Gardaí said the murder investigation is continuing and they are still appealing for information. Gardaí say they are continuing to appeal for any information relating to a Falcon Storm mountain bike with straight handlebars and distinctive yellow/green front forks. Over the last 24 hours, thousands of people have been paying tribute to Ashling on social media. This week I am joined by Eve McDowell. In 2019, Eve became a victim of stalking. Her stalker was jailed after months of following her and breaking into her home. Eve speaks to me about what she went through, how she rebuilt her life and how it's taken her on a new path.  In her recovery Eve was shocked to discover that there is no specific law against stalking in Ireland and could find very little information or relevant advice online. Eve McDowell is a co-founder of stalking.ie which she set up with Una Ring as there is currently no specific stalking legislation in Ireland. Eve joined us to share her story as a victim of stalking and told us about her experience, how it happened and the lack of support available to victims even as they go through the courts process in Ireland.  Eve and Una are actively campaigning to introduce specific stalking legislation in Ireland and to provide support to those experiencing stalking.
