New legislation for stalking in Ireland has been delayed since last year. A new offence of stalking has been proposed by the Government but has yet to be acted upon. In comparison it's been announced that since Northern Ireland brought in new stalking laws a year ago, 88 people have been arrested and 47 people have been charged. Gardaí have eliminated a 40-year-old man from their inquiries into the murder of Ashling Murphy in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Ashling, a 23-year-old primary school teacher, was attacked and killed on the banks of the Grand Canal on Wednesday afternoon. Gardaí said the murder investigation is continuing and they are still appealing for information. Gardaí say they are continuing to appeal for any information relating to a Falcon Storm mountain bike with straight handlebars and distinctive yellow/green front forks. Over the last 24 hours, thousands of people have been paying tribute to Ashling on social media. Cllr Mairin McGrath, Una Ring and Eve McDowell of Stalking Ireland joined Fran this morning on Tipp Today to share their condolences and personal stories.

Her stalker lured her to his new workplace, where he locked her in a conference room and pinned her arms down, trying to kiss her multiple times. The next day he began texting her and when she didn't reply he told her was going to stop by her house. After she reported him to the Gardai (Irish Police) her car tires and house were spray painted before he was caught on her surveillance camera with a crowbar, rope, duct tape, a lock picking device and a condom-covered dildo strapped to his body. This week I am joined by Eve McDowell. In 2019, Eve became a victim of stalking. Her stalker was jailed after months of following her and breaking into her home. Eve speaks to me about what she went through, how she rebuilt her life and how it's taken her on a new path.  In her recovery Eve was shocked to discover that there is no specific law against stalking in Ireland and could find very little information or relevant advice online. Eve McDowell is a co-founder of stalking.ie which she set up with Una Ring as there is currently no specific stalking legislation in Ireland. Eve joined us to share her story as a victim of stalking and told us about her experience, how it happened and the lack of support available to victims even as they go through the courts process in Ireland.  Eve and Una are actively campaigning to introduce specific stalking legislation in Ireland and to provide support to those experiencing stalking.
