Ep. 055: Together for Good - The Power of Community Climate Action

Wilder Podcast

Helen Meech is Executive Director of the Climate Coalition, the UK's largest group of organisations dedicated to action on people, climate and nature. Over 130 member organisations, from the National Trust to Oxfam to Save the Children, plus a network of around 3,500 community organisers across the UK. And yet most people have never heard of them. As Helen explains, that's deliberate. We talk about Great Big Green Week, the Coalition's flagship campaign, running this year from 6 to 14 June. It has more than doubled in size every year for three years: 250,000 people, then 600,000, then 1.2 million last year, with around 2 million expected this year. The stat that matters most: over a third of attendees had never engaged with climate or nature before. They came because someone they knew organised something, or because it was free to do with the kids on a Saturday. We also dig into where power actually sits. Helen's framing, "creating the space for politics to move into," challenges the idea that change is something politicians do to us. And we compare notes on the People's Emergency Briefing, which we recently screened at the Grange Hub, and the tension every communicator in this space wrestles with: realism versus hope. The post-interview chat gets into Tom's view that the era of being polite about the emergency is over, Chloe's case for hope grounded in community rather than technology, and why we still don't have a Help for Heroes equivalent for the climate movement.About the guestHelen Meech is Executive Director of the Climate Coalition. She has spent 25 years in environmental campaigning and movement-building, including roles at the National Trust and the RSPB, where she was Head of Movement Building and led the development of the People's Plan for Nature. Her work is built on a single belief: people are powerful, especially when they come together. The Climate Coalition: theclimatecoalition.org Great Big Green Week: greatbiggreenweek.comChapters00:00 - Welcome and intros 01:30 - Grange update: screening the People's Emergency Briefing at the Hub 04:30 - Watching hard truths in community, and why that changes the experience 06:55 - Tom's case: the days of being polite about the emergency are over 07:30 - Wilder Connections summer programme: co-design with young people 10:57 - Who is the Climate Coalition? 14:59 - Why most people haven't heard of the Climate Coalition (on purpose) 17:24 - "Creating the space for politics to move into" 20:05 - Everyone has power: protest, community organising, media, culture 22:18 - Great Big Green Week: nightclubs, litter picks, fetes and school assemblies 23:59 - The infrastructure behind 6,000 local events 29:54 - Flooded pitches: why grassroots sport is organising 30:30 - The unexpected challenge: keeping the big NGOs on board 32:43 - Greenwashing and a brand with a life of its own 34:15 - The Coalition's three policy asks 36:50 - The five million target, and matching Children in Need for awareness 39:43 - Helen's reaction to the People's Emergency Briefing 42:28 - Rebecca Solnit and hope as an action 44:35 - How to get involved in Great Big Green Week 46:03 - Tom and Chloe debrief: community action vs direct action 48:27 - The 3.5% rule, and whether the research still holds 50:45 - The school drop-off apology problem: why we need a safe movement to belong to 53:40 - Hope vs fear: did the briefing get the balance right? Key takeawaysOver a third of Great Big Green Week attendees have never engaged with climate or nature before. They come because the event is organised by someone they know, connected to a community they're already part of, or simply free to do with the kids. Over 80% of those newcomers wanted to do more afterwards.Great Big Green Week has more than doubled in size every year for three years, and reached a media audience of over 60 million last year. Around 11% of the UK population recognises it when prompted, on a par with campaigns that have run for decades.Helen's core argument about power: if we say politicians are the only ones with power, we're handing ours to them. The Coalition's job is to make the public mandate visible so politicians have space to move into. The Coalition's three policy asks: climate finance flowing where it's most needed, fairness at the heart of climate action (bills, jobs, just transition), and the urgent protection and restoration of nature.Fear needs to be combined with agency. Helen cites the Branding Biodiversity report: hard-hitting information without a path to action paralyses people. Twenty-five years into her career, the People's Emergency Briefing still made her cry. Her response was to write a to-do list.Hope is an action, not a mood. Rebecca Solnit's framing: pessimists and optimists both excuse themselves from doing anything.Resources and links mentionedOrganisations and campaignsThe Climate Coalition: theclimatecoalition.orgGreat Big Green Week (6-14 June 2026): greatbiggreenweek.comNational Emergency Briefing / People's Emergency Briefing, including the screening map and how to host one: nebriefing.orgWilder Connections, Chloe's charity growing a movement for nature connection in young people: wilderconnections.charityClimate Psychology Alliance (facilitation training Chloe mentioned): climatepsychologyalliance.orgMore in Common (audience segmentation partner): moreincommon.org.ukBristol Stepping SistersNational Trust, RSPB, Oxfam, Save the Children, Co-op (Coalition members referenced)Ideas and referencesRebecca Solnit, Hope in the DarkJoanna Macy, Active Hope: activehope.infoBranding Biodiversity report (Futerra): fear combined with agencyThe 3.5% rule (Erica Chenoweth's research on nonviolent resistance)The People's Plan for Nature: peoplesplanfornature.orgCome and stay with usIf this conversation has you craving time somewhere slower, our off-grid cabins sit in a quiet corner of Monmouthshire surrounded by 80 acres of recovering nature. The Dairy Edge
Why Grazed Grass Still Wins on Feed Costs

The Dairy Edge

With the increased cost of fuel and fertiliser, Peter Doyle, Grassland Researcher in Teagasc, Grange, joins Stuart Childs to discuss the cost of growing grass, silage and other feeds. Peter outlines the costs that he uses in the Grange Feed Costing Model which are of course assumptions but are necessary for the model to function. He emphasises that grazed grass delivers the lowest feed cost, even with higher fertilser prices. The cost model estimates grazed grass at about 14c/kg dry matter (including land charge), compared with roughly 42c/kg dry matter for concentrates. Feed quality is important in the model as the energy of the feed influences the performance it delivers. Peter argues that delaying first-cut silage to chase higher yields given increased fuel costs to get better bang for the buck from contractor costs is a false economy.  Earlier cutting (around late May) produces higher-quality silage, improves the total energy yield of the overall two-cut system as well as supporting better animal performance, reducing the requirement for expensive concentrate supplementation. Big first cuts of low quality material don't deliver more silage and are ‘penny wise, pound poor' due to the cost they create subsequently. Peter also stresses that feed quality should be matched to the type of stock being fed. High-quality silage is needed for lactating cows and young stock, while lower-quality, higher-volume silage may suit dry cows.  He notes that alternatives such as maize and fodder beet can be useful but involve similar or higher costs, additional management requirements, and often require supplementary protein and minerals. Finally, Peter says that the cost of grazed grass doesn't increase as significantly as the other feeds and thus people need to focus on grazed grass as their primary feed source and maximise the amount of it that they produce and consume to minimise their overall feed costs. For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

We start today with Nick talking us through the new Long Island course(s) which he played late last week, a course redesign that Mark describes as a 'new concept in golf', whereby it is basically 3 courses. Nick played one of them and outlines what it was like, he cannot wait to go back. The team at OCM have done a great job.And onto a huge talking point of the week. The tournament at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas, where the course underwent a $25m redesign to make it tougher for the pros, was it? Well perhaps not. Nick and Mark look at the scores....wowee. Mark describes course designers adding in multiple pin placements a 'con' and explains why.Nick has got his hands on a survey that the PGA Tour has sent to Tour Pros, and there are some fascinating questions that they have asked. He talks through some of the most intriguing ones. Mark shares a revealing stat on his club head speed and carry today vs when he was on tour.....interesting! And we compare a couple of Titleist drivers, a newer one vs an older one. Nick also has a stat, one to do with Tiger and his driving distance.Mark says 'Rory McIlroy broke my heart'. Was this a romantic situation? Is it love scorned? No, it's far worse, Mark explains on the pod. Nick, being supportive, after hearing the story says that Rory is wrong. We discuss bifurcation for a bit. It really is the only solution. And what about Bryson? A YouTube star or a Pro Golfer? What will he do? He has said he is uncertain. Mark is 100% clear on what he'd like Bryson to do, Nick more circumspect. And for Hostplus, our 'plus' for golf this week is the Long Island redevelopment! After the turn.....following Nick's Top 5 nicest pro golfers last week, today Mark lists the top 5 'arsehole' acts he has seen Tour Pros do. Does he name names? Well, one. But Nick also has a story about an arsehole act that happened to him from a Tour Pro, he refuses to give the name, despite Mark and Dan trying to trap him - but from the clues, see if you can guess? The PING globals, plenty to talk through, including the great win by Scott Hend at the weekend! Fantastic to see.For Southern Golf Club, plenty of feedback, including on Nick and Mark's analysis of Cam Smith's swing last week, and we have a listen to his coach Claude Harmon speaking on his 'Son of a Butch' podcast about working with Cam.Feedback on cheating, including an incident at The Grange in Adelaide, AO Comments, and we get our discussion on where Lions live from last week clarified. And for the Golf Clearance Outlet, a cracking masterclass from Nick O'Hern inspired by watching Si Woo Kim at the weekend doing something unusual with his putting. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Hostplus, Talk Birdie To Me's official retirement partnerBMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; The Find My Player app - follow every player on every tour; And Southern Golf Club. This week on the Little House 50 Podcast, we leave Walnut Grove for the bustling metropolis of Milwaukee—where, apparently, high school reunions were just as awkward in the 1800s as they are now.Charles Ingalls is in town representing Hero Township at the Grange convention, while Caroline Ingalls attends her 25th high school reunion. Reconnecting with old classmates, they quickly realize… maybe not everyone aged gracefully—emotionally speaking. On the Grange side, Charles discovers that large, wealthy farming operations are beginning to squeeze out the small farmers. And as expected, he is absolutely not having it. He launches into full speech mode, urging his fellow farmers to stand up, push back, and protect their way of life. Prairie union rep energy, activated.Meanwhile, Caroline is taking in the reunion scene and noticing a pattern: sure, her former classmates may have money and status, but they also seem deeply unhappy—and, in some cases, a little too eager for attention. (Can we say "Thirst trap on the Prairie"?!) Envy quickly gives way to clarity, as she realizes these “success stories” come with some serious cracks. As the episode unfolds, it becomes clear that appearances are doing a lot of heavy lifting. Carolina's marriage is strained and unfulfilling, Amy's polished life slips when she makes a bold—and very inappropriate—move on Charles, and Dylan's financial success comes paired with some major red flags, revealing a darker, more controlling side.By the end, the Ingallses walk away with a renewed appreciation for the life they've built—proving that integrity and love beat a flashy façade any day.Join us as we unpack farmer politics, comparison spirals, and why turning off that bedroom light felt incredibly satisfying—and fully earned. Then, join us on Patreon, where we spill the beans on our own personal High School Reunion stories--the good, the bad, and the ugly!Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? The Westall UFO incident began on the morning of Wednesday, April 6, 1966, in the suburb of Clayton South, located in the southeastern region of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. At approximately 11:00 AM, during the morning recess, more than 200 students and staff members from Westall High School and Westall State Primary School observed a silver, disc-shaped object approximately the size of two family cars. Witnesses, including science teacher Andrew Greenwood, described the craft as a metallic grey or slightly greenish saucer that moved silently and performed erratic, high-speed maneuvers. The object eventually descended into a nearby paddock of wild grass known as The Grange, where it reportedly hovered or landed briefly before tilting on its side and accelerating away toward the south. Shortly after the departure, students who rushed to the site found a large, circular area of flattened, swirled grass, commonly referred to as a "nest." Within hours, unidentified "men in suits" and military personnel arrived at the school, allegedly ordering students and staff into silence and later burning the grass at the landing site to remove physical evidence. The Westall event is frequently cited as "Australia's Roswell," not only because of the mass sightings of a craft and physical debris but because of the strikingly similar narrative of government suppression that has persisted for decades. Much like the Roswell incident of 1947, where the story survived through the persistent testimony of townspeople and witnesses to strange metallic fragments, Westall relies heavily on the consistency of the original observers who refuse to recant their stories despite official dismissals of weather balloons. However, the most profound parallel lies in the emergence of a "second generation" of voices—children of alleged insiders who are now stepping forward to break the silence their parents were forced to keep. Just as children of Roswell-era military officers have claimed their fathers spoke of recovered bodies or alien technology on their deathbeds, the Westall legacy has been revitalized by the descendants of a high-ranking Australian officialJOIN PATREON CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PHOTOS & SHOW NOTES

Simon and Chris follow in the mystical footsteps of Walter Evans Wentz, who journeyed from New Jersey real-estate hustler to theosophic acolyte to roving collector of fairylore in the deep west. Tramping through Ireland, Scotland, Man, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany, Walter sat by many a peat fire hearing tales of fairy nurses, stolen brides, knockers, pixies and the Gentry — and Chris wonders what these narrators really made of such a singular American. Along the way there is fairy seer extraordinaire Barney Crystal of Grange, Walter's crush on W. B. Yeats, the spelling of Cambridge, the problem of fairy shorthand, and the question of whether Walt was a cold fish, a sociopath, a bully or an all-round good guy. There is also the strange afterlife of The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries in the Age of Aquarius (and just a tiny bit of the Tibetan Book of the Dead).
