Yesterday's by-election was billed as a crucial mid-term test for both sides of politics. And when the results came in last night – the Albanese Government emerged as the winner. At the close of counting – Labor's primary vote remained virtually unchanged – at 41%. The Liberal vote jumped nearly 7% - but this was largely scooping up votes on the right – thanks to One Nation and the Palmer United Party deciding not to run.For the government – it's vindication of the Prime Minister's gamble to break a promise and offer everyone a tax cut. While for the Opposition – the strategy of blaming the government for everything from cost-of-living pain, the release of immigration detainees and a so-called “ute tax” weren't enough.David Speers interviews Shadow Immigration Minister Dan Tehan about the results. Niki Savva, Paul Sakkal, and Patricia Karvelas give their analysis from the couch. Mike Bowers talks the week in pictures with Fiona Katauskas.

Fiona Katauskas is a cartoonist, illustrator, and author of “The Amazing True Stories of How Babies Are Made’, a children’s book about conception, and childbirth that is relevant to our current social word. Fiona once studied politics at the Australian National University, and travelled extensively, working in overseas aid and human rights. After that, she became a full time cartoonist, with work appearing in a wide range of publications, like Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian, The Australian Financial Review, The Bulletin, The Chaser, Eureka Street and New Matilda; not to mention other events and anthologies. Fiona has illustrated many books for just about every publisher, designed cards for the Ink Group and t-shirts for Mambo.Fiona loves how cartoonists are able to take all their experiences, beliefs, bile and passion, wrap them up in a metaphor and get inky fingers in the process and while having fun. In this episode, Oni Blecher speaks with Fiona about her book ‘The Amazing True Story of How Babies are Made’. We really speak about sex education for young people, appropriate messaging in education tools and resources, and how this education can imprint and shape not only our attitudes toward sex but also our relationships with our bodies. A good political cartoon is more than just funny. It makes you think about current events, holds truth to power and is a tool of criticism. What’s the power of political cartoons in the 21st century? Has their role changed?
In this episode, we interview Fiona Katauskas. Fiona is a cartoonist, author and illustrator. Cartoonists lampoon our politicians, provide a running commentary on the day’s big issues and can sum up a news story with a perfect gag. Our August 2014 Media Talk at the State Library of NSW featured a panel of Walkley Award-winning cartoonists and illustrators discussing the rich material presented to them each day, the illustrating process, and where the industry is heading in the age of interactive and digital storytelling. The panel includes Lindsay Foyle, Cathy Wilcox, Fiona Katauskas and Anton Emdin.
