Postpartum is not just a recovery phase, it is one of the biggest full body transitions a woman will ever go through. In this episode, Dr. Taz breaks down what actually happens in the fourth trimester, from the steep drop in estrogen and progesterone to fluid shifts, tissue dryness, gut slowdown, metabolic changes, and the mental and emotional load that can follow. You will learn why so many women feel unprepared after birth, why the six week bounce back expectation is unrealistic, and how older systems like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda approached postpartum as a sacred 40 to 100 day window of restoration.Dr. Taz shares: • Why postpartum can feel so destabilizing: the hormone crash, nervous system strain, and energy depletion most women are never taught about • The hidden physical shifts after delivery, including swelling and fluid volume changes that can take months to fully regulate • Why skin, hair, and vaginal dryness are common postpartum, and how this can affect libido, confidence, and self perception • How breastfeeding changes hormones, including oxytocin's calming effect and its relationship with cortisol and mood • Why weight loss varies dramatically postpartum, and how insulin sensitivity, blood sugar history, PCOS, and metabolic factors change the timeline • The gut changes no one talks about: slower motility, constipation, reflux, and why progesterone shifts play a role • The fourth trimester frameworks from Chinese medicine and Ayurveda: rest, warming foods, nourishment, massage, acupuncture, herbs, and community care • A modern 100 day postpartum plan that starts in the third trimester with nutrient optimization, thyroid and blood sugar support, gut health, and a real support circleWhether you are newly postpartum, preparing for birth, or supporting someone in those early months, this episode gives you a clear, practical roadmap to protect energy, reduce depletion, and recover in a way that helps you feel like yourself again.Stay Connected:Connect further to Hol+ at https://holplus.co/- Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay updated on future episodes of hol+.Follow Dr. Taz on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtazmd/https://www.instagram.com/liveholplus/Subscribe to the audio podcast: https://holplus.transistor.fm/subscribeSubscribe to the video podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@DrTazMD/podcastsGet your copy of The Hormone Shift: Balance Your Body and Thrive Through Midlife and MenopauseHost & Production TeamHost: Dr. Taz; Produced by ClipGrowth.com (Producer: Pat Gostek)
Shop your personalized skincare here. If your skin suddenly feels unpredictable during pregnancy, it is not your imagination and it is not your fault. Hormones shift rapidly, collagen stretches, pigment deepens, and routines that once worked may no longer feel effective. In this episode, Dr. Mina sits down with integrative dermatologist Dr. Mamina Turegano for an honest, evidence-based conversation on skincare during pregnancy. Together, they break down the most common concerns dermatologists see at this stage, from acne and hyperpigmentation to melasma, stretch marks, and sunscreen safety. They clarify which ingredients are best avoided, which can be used safely when appropriate, and why simple foundations like sun protection, hydration, and gut health often matter more than an overloaded routine. They also cover postpartum skincare and what can be thoughtfully reintroduced while breastfeeding, helping listeners move forward with clarity, confidence, and a lot less anxiety around doing something wrong. Key Takeaways: ✓ Pregnancy acne and melasma are hormonally driven and incredibly common ✓ Azelaic acid, niacinamide, and gentle exfoliation can support skin safely ✓ Retinoids and hydroquinone are avoided due to absorption concerns ✓ Sunscreen is safe during pregnancy and critical for pigment prevention ✓ Stretch marks reflect structural skin changes and genetics, not skincare failure ✓ Postpartum skin care offers more flexibility, including the return of retinoids If you are pregnant, postpartum, or planning ahead and want science-backed answers without judgment, this episode will leave you feeling informed, supported, and far more confident in your skin. Send us a textLet's expose the standard advice that is making new mothers miserable: the push for high-fiber, raw fruits and vegetables immediately postpartum. It sounds healthy, but it's the root cause of crippling postpartum bloating, gas, and poor nutrient absorption!Get ready for a physiological truth: the postpartum digestive system is temporarily compromised. Loading it with complex plant matter is sabotage. You'll uncover the ancient wisdom of traditional cultures (Chinese, Ayurvedic) that prioritized warm, cooked, easily digestible foods for thousands of years. This episode is your guide to strategic postpartum nutrition that maximizes healing and finally ends the cycle of depletion and discomfort.Check out this episode on the blog HERE. Key time stamps: 02:50: Why the postpartum digestive system is temporarily compromised.04:05: The body prioritizes critical healing over complex digestion. 05:40: Traditional cultures prioritize warm, cooked, easily digestible foods. 07:15: Why cold, raw foods dampen the digestive "fire." 08:20: The flaw in modern nutrition: ignoring digestibility and absorption. 08:50: Fiber requires significant digestive capacity the postpartum body lacks. 10:10: How high-fiber foods cause bloating, gas, and inflammation in a compromised gut. 11:00: Raw vegetables are problematic: they require high energy and are "cooling." 12:50: The benefits of cooking: increased nutrient bioavailability and reduced anti-nutrients. 13:30: The real causes of postpartum constipation (hormones, fear, magnesium deficiency). 14:55: How high fiber impairs nutrient absorption (binding effect) for depleted mothers. 16:00: The correct progression: simple/cooked → complex/raw. 17:00: Immediate relief: Switching to cooked, warm food resolves bloating in days. 17:55: The importance of respecting digestive capacity and natural progression.NEXT STEPS:
Postpartum sleep deprivation is real — and it's not because you're doing something wrong. In this episode, we talk about why it's not biologically normal for babies to sleep through the night at 2–4 months old, despite what many sleep programs and “quick-fix” sleep solutions promise. If you're an exhausted postpartum mom feeling pressure to fix your baby's sleep, this episode will help normalize infant sleep patterns, release unrealistic expectations, and remind you that frequent night waking is a normal part of early development. You're not failing — you're responding to your baby. Instagram: @itslaurenricks @b.aligned.postpartum Website 1:1 Sleep consult

This week's Friday Five tackles a question many women quietly wonder about: “What should I expect if I restart Mounjaro after pregnancy and breastfeeding?”Whether you paused your GLP-1 for pregnancy, breastfeeding, or simply life circumstances, coming back to it after many months brings up a lot of unknowns. In this episode, I break down what typically happens, what we actually know from emerging research, and most importantly—why postpartum women need close, compassionate medical support.Inside the episode, we explore:1. What current guidelines say about GLP-1s, pregnancy, and breastfeedingThe traditional recommendation is stopping GLP-1s two months before trying to conceive and waiting until you're done breastfeeding to restart. But I also share a recent small study looking at semaglutide and its transfer into breast milk—and what that means (and doesn't mean) for real-life decisions.2. Why restarting after long-term use often looks differentIf you were previously on Mounjaro for 6–24 months, your body typically:tolerates the medication more easilycan often titrate up more quicklyexperiences fewer early side effects Some of this is physiologic, some behavioral—because you've already learned hydration, fiber strategies, and the day-after-injection do's and don'ts.3. The postpartum period is the “fourth trimester”—and it changes everythingExhaustion, unpredictable schedules, stress, hormones, sleep deprivation… postpartum is not just a season. It's a vulnerable season. This is why you should never “go cowboy alone” when restarting medication. A skilled clinician helps prevent:excessive restrictionmetabolic overwhelmworsening moodtipping into depression or anxietyextreme titration that backfires4. How ongoing support during pregnancy impacts your restartI share examples from my own clinic: Some women stay with me through pregnancy—not for weight loss, but for structure, nutrition support, and a stable relationship with food. Those women often find it much easier to restart postpartum because they never disconnected from caring for their bodies.5. The good news: most women feel relief when they restartOnce medically cleared and supported, many women say:their appetite becomes manageable againtheir mental load decreasestheir urges and cravings quiet downthey finally feel like they have helpAnd that's the whole point: to feel supported, not stressed. If you're in this season, I'm rooting for both your health and your baby's health. Postpartum is not a time to go it alone, and you deserve expert guidance every step of the way.I hope this episode gives you clarity, comfort, All of the information on this podcast is for general informational purposes only. In this solo transmission, I name something I've been witnessing for a long time in the birth space: the birth world is completely out of control! What was once a simple, instinctual axis of natural birth vs medical birth has now fractured into multiple layers with brands, ideologies and Instagram philosophies. In this episode, I strip away the noise and bring us back to the TRUE foundation of Birth. And how, when we try to domesticate her, intellectualise her, or control her - we create the chaos we're currently drowning in.I also speak to the nine-year cycle we're moving through collectively - a cycle of exposure, collapse, and cosmic housekeeping - and why this moment of breakdown in the “birth world” is not a mistake, but a clearing. A return.I also explore:Why the “freebirth vs medical birth” war is a distractionWhy the unfolding of birth absolutely matters - and why some will act as though it doesntThe birth world as chaos, fragmentation and marketplaceThe misogynistic and biblical roots of “you get the birth you needed”What “the birth world” actually is - and why it's irrelevant to birthThe myth of providing choice for modern womenThis episode is for you if…You feel disillusioned or confused by the current “birth world” and all its sides, methods and opinions. You've sensed that birth is being pulled further and further away from what it truly is - and you can't unsee it.You're ready to move beyond camps, labels and strategies - and nd return to the raw, uncontaminated truth of birth.

For many women, navigating those postpartum months is challenging on its own, but add in the daunting return of fertility and things can feel overwhelming. How can we approach these unique seasons?
Think EDS and pregnancy is a straightforward conversation? Think again. In this jam-packed Office Hours episode, I dig into everything I wish someone had told me and everything I've since learned from patients, research, and my own pregnancies. From racing heart rates and failed epidurals to postpartum complications and misunderstood mental health shifts, we're laying it all out. We explore rapid labor, prolapse risk, anesthetic resistance, dysautonomia flares, pelvic floor fragility, and why some babies bruise easier than doctors expect. Whether you're prepping for pregnancy, navigating birth, or recovering afterward, this is your roadmap for a more informed journey. Takeaways: Pregnancy with EDS or HSD isn't automatically high-risk, but it comes with specific concerns like tissue fragility, anesthesia resistance, and prolapse that OBs may overlook. Labor can be rapid and unpredictable in people with connective tissue disorders, making delivery planning (and backup plans) especially important. Local anesthetics may not work as expected, so communicating prior resistance to meds like lidocaine is crucial for anesthesia teams. Postpartum recovery often takes longer, with higher risk of complications like joint instability, slow healing, and mental health shifts, including postpartum depression. Medical students with EDS should choose specialties with pacing and physical demand in mind, considering how residency schedules and procedures might affect long-term career sustainability. In this episode of The Birth Trauma Mama Podcast, Kayleigh sits down with Danielle, a therapist and mother of three, to share a story that challenges the narrow ways we often define birth and postpartum trauma.Danielle's trauma did not occur during labor or delivery, it unfolded months postpartum, following what was supposed to be a routine surgical procedure to remove a fibroid. Instead, a cascade of medical complications led to a medical emergency, multiple surgeries, bladder injury, and an unplanned hysterectomy that permanently ended her ability to carry another pregnancy.Already navigating life with three young children, including a baby under one, Danielle suddenly found herself recovering from a major abdominal surgery, managing a catheter for weeks, and confronting the profound grief of losing her fertility without warning or choice. As both a therapist and a patient, Danielle brings a deeply reflective lens to this conversation, naming the invisible grief that so often accompanies medical trauma, especially when it doesn't “fit” neatly into recognized categories of loss.Together, Kayleigh and Danielle explore:
The addition of a new baby is supposed to be a happy time, right? However, a new study suggests the birth of your first child could be more stressful and lead to more unhappiness than unemployment, divorce, or death? What? How is that possible? What are the most common stressors new parents experience? And how can you overcome those issues and experience more happiness and stability? Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of The Provider Series, Christian Davis, NP, from our Charlottesville office, returns to discuss one of the most misunderstood chapters in women's health: postpartum. She explains how pregnancy elevates hormones to their peak, why estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone rapidly drop after delivery, and how this sudden shift contributes to fatigue, mood changes, anxiety, hair loss, sleep disruption, and low libido. Christian also highlights postpartum thyroid dysfunction, prolactin's impact on dopamine, the importance of nutrition, and why rest and community support are essential for recovery. Together, they break down what happens in the first 48 hours postpartum, how hormonal changes influence mood and bonding, why thyroid health affects milk supply and overall healing, and how preexisting hormone issues shape the postpartum experience. She also shares what postpartum care should look like (and why many women aren't receiving it.) Whether you're postpartum, preparing for pregnancy, or supporting someone you love, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and science-backed insight into what the body is truly going through. This episode with Dr. David McCarty-Caplan touches on so many profound and heartfelt areas, carried by the radical vulnerability, honesty, and compassion he brings to the conversation. David generously shares about his reunion with his Colombian birth family-- first on his own, and later with his children and partner. We explore how his kids embraced reunion and modeled openness, curiosity and love with his family, and how their presence and perspective helped guide and teach him throughout the process. David also reflects on his identity as a Jewish Colombian adoptee and his powerful work community building with and for Jewish adoptees of color. Dr. David McCarty-Caplan BioDr. David McCarty-Caplan (PhD) is a researcher, educator, writer, and consultant whose work sits at the intersection of identity, belonging, and social justice. Born in Bogotá, Colombia and adopted into a white Jewish family in the United States, David's life has been shaped by questions of race, family, and home. These experiences continue to inform his passion for helping adoptees and their families navigate the complex layers of identity, racism, and connection that often accompany adoption. Drawing on his background as a social work researcher and educator, David brings both personal insight and professional rigor to his work with organizations, communities, and families. He is especially interested in how people and institutions can create spaces where all feel seen and valued. David lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their two children, ages 12 and 10. As a husband, father, and adoptee, he is continually exploring what it means to nurture belonging — in his family, in his work, and in the broader world.https://www.shadesofbelonging.com/Co-Hosts: Nari Baker & Robyn ParkMusic: Mike Marlatt & Paul GulledgeAudio Production: Frederico Soler FernándezArtwork: Dalhe KimListen on: iTunes & SpotifyInstagram: @laboroflovepodcastSupport via Venmo: @laboroflovepodcast

Click here to send me a quick message :) It is a total MYTH that nursing is birth control, so if you've heard that I'm sorry to say, you're out of luck. It is true that for some people, lactation may deter ovulation for many months or years. But it is NOT true for everyone, unfortunately. This is why there are so many unexpected pregnancies that come soon after a previous one. And honestly, unless you are planning on that, it can be pretty shocking and a lot to navigate a new pregnancy with a nursing babe and still healing postpartum. One of the most confusing times to track our cycles, especially if we're practicing FAM for contraception, is postpartum. A few weeks ago, I received a question about this on Instagram, so I figured, why not answer it here so everyone can benefit. So many folks would prefer to prevent pregnancy in this time if possible. But between the sleep disturbances, stress, depletion, body healing, and hormones adjusting of the postpartum time, cycles can be WONKY.And you won't bleed before you ovulate, so you can't rely on that to tell if you're fertile either...So what CAN you do? What's important to consider? What's reliable and what's not?I go into all my thoughts on this, pretty Q+A free-flow style today. On Saturday, Megan broke a 15-year-old course record at Quad Dipsea! This episode shares everything about the journey in a “no secrets” style. The record was set by Caren Spore in 2010, back when Megan was playing field hockey and her biggest runs were wind-sprints. Years later, when Megan was in medical school in the Bay Area, the Quad became a bucket list event. But it never happened—a 28 mile race with 9000 feet of vertical gain and approximately three billion steps was just too much at that stage of her life. Then came the heart issues and 2 kids. This weekend, she got back on the brutal, stair-filled trails and WENT PRIMAL. We break it all down, featuring listener questions and hot takes on training, strength work, nutrition, heart rate, stairs, and so much more! Thank you all for being here for the wild ride. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz to unpack the truth about midlife mood shifts, rage, and the hormonal fluctuations that mimic depression but aren't the same. We break down the science of perimenopause, why women are so often misdiagnosed, and how decades of excluding women from research left major gaps in understanding how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone shape the brain. Dr. Gilberg-Lenz reveals how hormonal changes—starting up to ten years before menopause—can transform mood, cognition, and stress, and how modern science is finally catching up to just how powerfully hormones influence the mind. About the guest:Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz is a board-certified OB/GYN and integrative women's health expert who blends conventional medicine with Ayurvedic training. A USC-trained physician with a residency at Cedars-Sinai, she supports women from adolescence through menopause and is the author of Menopause Bootcamp (Harper Wave, 2022). Her work focuses on demystifying midlife, challenging ageism in healthcare, and empowering women with science-based guidance.
