Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune Columnist and host of After Hours with Rick Kogan, 5p-7p Sundays on WGN Radio, joins John Landecker to talk about the life of Tom Lehrer.
This is a Tribute episode to Tom Lehrer, who passed away last week at age 97. For anyone unfamiliar with him and his music, he was a brilliant musical satirist who wrote incredibly clever, interesting and topical songs in the 1950s and 1960s. He was not a full-time musician. His true love was mathematics and he was employed for years as a professor at Harvard and MIT. Periodically, however, he emerged to perform and record several albums of his songs. He was trained as a classical pianist. All of his songs were performed just with him playing the piano and singing. His lyrics were sharp, intelligent, incisive and always on point. Here are some of his “Greatest Hits”.“Poisoning Pigeons In The Park” is about one of the pleasures of springtime.“Be Prepared” is his Boy Scout “marching song”.“I Hold Your Hand In Mine” is his necrophiliac ballad.“The Vatican Rag” is his response to the Vatican's attempt to “make the Church more commercial”, as he liked to say.And perhaps his most famous song is “The Elements”, where he names all of the elements to a Gilbert & Sullivan melody.Tom Lehrer will be missed.------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!Click here for All Episodes Click here for Guest List Click here for Guest Groupings Click here for Guest TestimonialsClick here to Subscribe Click here to receive our Email UpdatesClick here to Rate and Review the podcast—----------------------------------------ROBERT'S NEWEST ALBUM:“WHAT'S UP!” is Robert's new compilation album. It's the fantasy of countless Wall Street analysts. Amran Gowani traded his lucrative career in hedge funds for the scarily solitary world of novel writing. His debut satirical novel Leverage draws from his insider experience at investment banks and hedge funds, exposing the toxic culture and perverse incentives that drive corporate America's financial sector. In this bracingly frank conversation, Gowani confesses his transformation from organic chemistry PhD dropout to pharmaceutical marketing executive to Wall Street analyst, and finally to full-time novelist. He reveals the harsh economic realities of publishing fiction, the challenges of first-time novel writing, and how he channeled his corporate experiences into satirizing the very system that employed him. 1. Publishing Economics vs. Wall Street Profits "The money I made in the mid 2010s on my Wall Street Bank dwarfs the money I made on the advance I got for my novel and that's and I actually got a pretty good advance... You don't write novels because you want money or at least you shouldn't if you're looking for money."2. Structural Problems Drive Toxic Behavior "When you run companies and you tell people that the only thing that matters in your company as shareholder value. Then people are gonna do everything they can to maximize shareholder value... When you create perverse incentives, I mean, you're gonna get perverse outcomes."3. Writing as Processing and Understanding "I wrote my book and I write in general because I think it helps me process the world around me. It helps me understand the world round me... that's my way of processing the world and and communicating ideas that I think are important using the the satirical framework."4. Modern Authors Must Be Marketers "I don't think that you can just be like, I'm going to sit it out. I'm not going to be on social media. I'm Not going to have a newsletter, and just be like, I'm just going to write a great book, and I'm going to get found. Like, I don't think that's really viable anymore."5. AI Won't Replace Human Storytelling "Nobody wants to read, no serious reader wants to read a novel written by a computer... It's not a person, it's not a living entity behind the words, no matter how realistic they might seem... when you're looking to connect it like a human experience... people wanna read a book written by basically a linear regression machine."No, not everyone can or will be Michael Lewis. But Gowani should be applauded for both his bravery and honesty. We should all wish him the best of luck with Leverage. This is a public episode. Greetings from East Africa Glocal Citizens! Well, kind of…this conversation was recorded last weekend from Nairobi on the eve of Father's Day and a day after the opening of my guest, Michael Soi's current group exhibition, The Print Press (https://web.facebook.com/michael.soi.7/posts/the-print-press-is-an-exhibit-of-woodcut-prints-by-various-nairobi-based-artist-/10162204021212545/?_rdc=1&_rdr), an exhibit of woodcut prints by various Nairobi based artist at the Alliance Française de Nairobi 13th - 29th of June. I met Michael in his studio at The Go Down Art Centre (https://thegodown.org) when I first visited Kenya in February and after an inspired conversation I wanted to be sure to share his story here. As you'll hear, he has been working in Nairobi since 1995 after completion of his fine art and art history studies. His distinctive work is inspired by contemporary life in Nairobi providing a photographic diary of Nairobi. It is also a satirical commentary of social, economic and political trends. His work explores relationships – intergenerational, interracial or generally what he calls the economics of love, commercial sex work and popular culture within the context of globalization and consumerism. A wonderful aspect of Michael's visual storytelling craft is that he's figured out the hacks that make his art accessible on many levels from the curious observer to the serious collector. Episode 548 - Amy Weinland Daughters - Letter Writer, Satirist, Sports journalist and AuthorIt all started when Dick and Sue Weinland hooked up at an apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Four years later, after things had gotten quite cozy, I was born just a few short miles from the Eighth Wonder of the World, a.k.a. – the Astrodome. I blossomed into womanhood north of H-Town, in Spring, Texas, where I attended Klein Oak High School. From there, it was on to the Princeton of the Texas Panhandle – THE Texas Tech University – and just five glorious years later, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. That's when it became time for me to not only enter the world of business (I was in the purchasing arena for a decade) but to do my own hooking up and child creating. The plot twist that brings us to the rest of the story was my husband's job moving us to England for three years. Finding myself temporarily without employment, I did the next obvious thing and became a writer. Guest-host Carole O'Neill's guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Scott Gordon, author of the book Head Fake. Scott Gordon's fiction has appeared in the Green Hills Literary Lantern (GHLL), Modern Times Magazine, Pennsylvania Literary Journal, The Satirist, and Mobius Magazine. In addition to writing fiction, he has written and directed films and television series, including A History of Black Achievement in America, Great American Authors, and more. Scott spent years working as a Youth Advocate for juvenile offenders with mental illness. Head Fake is inspired by the strength and courage of the kids he worked with. Originally from New Jersey, Scott lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Samantha, and their two rescue pups, Mel Brooks and Khaleesi Bee. In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: As I began reading Head Fake, I wasn't sure it was something I would finish. After all, mentally ill teenagers centered around the game of basketball was everything I would avoid choosing when I decided to read a new author. My surprise was the way Scott Gordon used humor on nearly every page to enhance Mikey's interaction against the antics of the high-risk offenders he was about to coach. The more difficult challenge was to make sure Mikey's own clinical depression didn't become the reason for a failed experiment. By the second chapter, I had forgotten about the sport of basketball and raced through the pages to find out how each of these disturbed students would be saved. The violent offenders and outcasts battled with bipolar disorder and street violence to arrive each day to train with a coach they believed would get them a win. Halfway through the book, I found myself cheering for the team and their impossible hurdles toward a goal no one thought could be reached. I LOVED THIS BOOK! Kinky Friendman 1944-2024In the summer of 2021, Kinky Friedman invited me into his home at Echo Hill Ranch; and graciously let me interview him. We spoke for 3 hours. We had shots. We laughed. He shared stories, and he played (live) a song he had written just the night before. (Banjo, Sophie, and Me).Even though I did not "know" him, he had an impact on me. I shared my experience of that day with anyone who would listen. He let me play four of his songs, when I released that interview. He even PREFERRED that I use the Willie Nelson version of one of them. He was Kind.He was hilarious. He was rough, brash, sincere, & vulnerable.I have thought of my time with him often & will carry those hours with me forever. His interview is some of "my" best work. His 2 part episode rises above most of my endeavors. I have combined them for you (the listener) here.Thank you, Kinkster.Rest easy. -Steve

A conversation with Salam El Zaatari - producer, director & satirist, taped live at Aaliya's Books. Discussing how to properly navigate and eloquently express emotions as they relate to political conflict, the use satire provides in debunking conspiracy, myths and state-propaganda, how misunderstanding of history and false narratives emerge from lack of political agency, a reflection of audience engagement from mainstream television to alternative podcasts, and whether or not religion plays a fundamental role in continued regional war. Well folx, this is it, our final episode of Swords & Satire. We have tried so hard, and come so far, but in the end, it doesn't even matter… No, wait, sorry, don't know where that Lincoln Park song came from, but have created one more episode to honor how far we have come as a show, and the classic fantasy film that started it all, Conan the Barbarian. This is also in thanks to all of our listeners and patrons, who have supported our show and stuck with us through all of the ups and downs. We hope you enjoy this final episode, and until we meet again, Hail Crom!P.S. Hang in there at the end of the episode to catch our very last skit, a little treat for you as a parting gift from us, the Satirists!
So … after watching The Babadook and considering how it ended we were wondering, what would it be like to live with a Babadook in your basement? We figured there would be growing pains, just like with any relationship, and they may need to have a family meeting eventually, right? Well, here we go playing out this confrontation for you, so you no longer need to wonder!

The UK has been swept up in a week of economic and political turmoil, with Prime Minister Liz Truss's Conservative government coming under increasing pressure over its controversial tax cut plan. Financial markets are roiled, the British pound tanked, and the IMF issued a rare rebuke. Meanwhile in Italy, the electoral success of Giorgia Meloni marks a lurch to the far right that will see a party with roots in neo-fascism enter power for the first time since World War II. And in the US, the latest January 6 hearing had to be postponed due to the devastating arrival of Hurricane Ian. Political chaos often acts as inspiration for Armando Iannucci's work. He's beloved for his comedies, looking at the absurdity of politics in The Thick of It, Veep, and The Death of Stalin. His latest work, Avenue 5, is a sitcom about a tourist spaceship thrown off course. But as he explains to Christiane, his goal isn't just to poke fun at those in power, but increasingly to try and shore up our fragile democratic norms. Also on today's show: Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Jodi Kantor; comedian Hasan Minhaj. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
Summary Alex Finley (Twitter; Website) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss life as a CIA Reports Officer turned author. She lives in Barcelona. What You'll Learn Intelligence Her take on CIA analysts vs. case officers Information and disinformation in fact and fiction Ukraine, the 2016 election and the Russian historical playbook The regularity even mundanity of much of daily intelligence life Reflections Being an American in Barcelona Viewing your own country from outside the goldfish bowl And much, much more… Episode Notes Alex Finley spent 6 years in the CIA as a Reports Officer - whom she describes as a bridge between the case officers and analysts. She is author of a trilogy of novels on the exploits of fictional CIA officer Victor Caro. Her most recent book, Victor in Trouble, completes the series (…or does it?) by looking at Russian influence operations and the contemporary intelligence landscape through a satirical lens. She now lives in Barcelona, Spain - and yes, apparently it's as awesome as it sounds! – and she is the voice behind #YachtWatch, which tracks and exposes the activities of Russian oligarchs and their superyachts. And… Satire is often described as fitting into three categories: Horatian, which offers light comedy and social commentary (e.g., Pride & Prejudice, Parks & Rec, The Colbert Report); Juvenalian, a darker and more abrasive take that can often take the form of speaking truth to power (e.g., Animal Farm, American Psycho, South Park) and Menippean, which casts moral judgement on beliefs or generic character flaws (e.g., Alice in Wonderland, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Saturday Night Live). Which one does Alex use? Quote of the Week "There, there were points where I found myself in the middle of nowhere, West Africa. And there are these moments where…how did I end up here? This makes zero sense. And then there were the bureaucratic Catch-22s." – Alex Finley. Resources *Andrew's Recommendation* Who are the Russian Oligarchs? “They're not calling you racist because they care about race or racism or eliminating racism. They're calling you racist because it works. … It's a tool to shut people up,” says Konstantin Kisin, a UK-based satirist, political commentator, and co-host of the TRIGGERnometry podcast. Born in Moscow during the Soviet era, Kisin is the author of the new book, “An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West.” “The problem isn't evil, malicious people running around who want to make things worse. The problem is people who buy into ideology that gives them permission to do terrible things in the name of the greater good,” he says. In this episode of Intelligence Matters, host Michael Morell speaks with Alex Finley, a former CIA officer in the Directorate of Operations and an author of three satirical books depicting life and work at the agency. Finley describes how CIA officers often use humor in unique ways to cope with high-stress assignments, and she and Morell discuss the ways in which satire can illuminate little-known realities about serious subjects. Finley also describes her newfound role as an amateur 'yacht-watcher,' tracking Russian oligarchs' yachts through the port of Barcelona.
