From MarioKart to MMORPGs, video games have come a long way from their rudimentary beginnings. In Western society some people are inventing new coping mechanisms to deal with loss and grief. Andre Stam is a psychotherapist who uses gaming as a way to connect with his young patients; Dale Andersen-Giberson uses Narrative Therapy to rewrite the dominant stories of his clients' lives; Simon Stanton's brother passed away when he was 11 years old and video games became a crucial aspect of his healing; Ryan Couldrey discovered a trove of his dead friend's games; Gabby DaRienzo designed A Mortician's Tale about cremation and funeral preparation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do you feel compelled to make your hobby a side hustle? I talked to Gabby DaRienzo, senior artist at Drinkbox studios, about baking and how it's nice to not monetize some hobbies and keep them for yourself.
Today I'm joined by Gabby DaRienzo and we have an incredibly lively and upbeat chat about death and video games. Gabby is the co-founder of Laundry Bear games. creator of the wonderful Mortician's Tale, and also the host of the Play Dead podcast where she speaks with fellow developers about death in video games. We each chat quite openly about our own experiences of loss and the intoxicating cocktail of emotions that can throw up, including the loss of her mum during the development of the Mortician’s Tale and how that impacted the game, and also how games have a unique way of letting us explore loss and grief and death in powerful and unusual ways. We also hit on nightmare fuel Windows 95 game Night Lite, why Majora's Mask made her want to make video games, how she became a ghost in the Sims 2 (and how it's actually the best Sims game), how fun the management sim of actual management can be, Left 4 Dead marathons in university, what makes a great achievement, and how she was so good at Crossy Road the developers thought she was a bot. What happens when you mash up Animal Crossing: New Horizons with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit? You'll find out in this dark and delightful episode of Tiny Island Diary with Dr. Emily Flynn-Jones, creative director of indie game development firm Killjoy Games. Inspired by a piece by Gabby DaRienzo, Emily discusses unique ways in which our tiny islands give us space to mourn in this very strange time. But wait, there's more: ACNH is versatile enough to create an entire world of, say... witchcraft. Taking ACNH to dark places makes sense when you add up some of the creepy features Nintendo built into the game. From your first invitation to Harv's remote island (he just wants to take your picture, really!) to a Happy Home Academy rep watching you while you sleep, there are lots of clues that, under the surface, ACNH is designed to follow you to whatever weird, wild, fantastical, complex place you want to create in the game. (Lava pit wedding, anyone?) Emily has found the Animal Crossing channel on the Wholesome Games Discord to be helpful for links, resources, player tips, and artwork inspired by ACNH. This episode was recorded on Saturday, August 1, 2020.

#51: Lauren asked members of the GT Community about their most memorable game deaths and then wrote a paper on it. Lauren and Josué discuss what makes a game death memorable and why so many people answer the question with “Aeris from FFVII.” This topic was inspired by Gabby DaRienzo and the Play Dead Podcast. We are accustomed to viewing video games as unnecessarily violent, containing graphic depictions of death. Some, however, are spinning death in a new light. Paul and Jordan talk to video game developer, Gabby DaRienzo, about her recent creation, A Mortician's Tale. It is a video game that requires the player--as a funeral director--to both care for the business and emotional side of death, from preparing the bodies of the deceased to comforting the bereaved. Though seemingly dark, the game, Gabby shares, is deemed "death positive," helping people talk more openly and comfortably about death. Follow Gabby on Twitter @gabdar
Death is everywhere in video games, and nowhere at all. From falling down a hole in Super Mario Bros. to falling off a cliff in the Uncharted series, death is a tried and true mechanic. Much rarer is the attempt to reconcile with it. Join us as we talk with Gabby DaRienzo about her game A Mortician's Tale: a narrative experience that has you preparing bodies for their final goodbye. Together, we discuss death-positivity, reconciling with loss as you create games, and the value of short, premium experiences.
Our first episode is due out in the beginning of November, but here's a little glimpse of what's to come! For this first Side Quest, I chatted with the creator of A Mortician's Tale, Gabby DaRienzo, about her life in games, her love of NeoPets, and the Death Positive movement that led to the creation of A Mortician's Tale.
