Her collection of unique objects includes memorial hair wreaths, clothing, post-mortem photography, viewing coffins, and a wide variety of curious ceremonial objects that were commonly used at the time. "Dark Archives" with author Megan Rosenbloom Join the Morbidly Curious Book Club Today: themorbidlycuriousbookclub.com “Anthropodermic books demand that we wrestle with mortality and what happens when immortality is thrust upon us, and they have clarified my own moral vision as a librarian and caretaker of what remains of the past. All of these realizations came to me over time. I started off with simply a healthy dose of morbid curiosity.” Welcome to the Morbidly Curious Book Club's Podcast! In this episode, we are discussing our January 2024 book pick, “DARK ARCHIVES: A Librarian's Investigation Into the Science and History of Books Bound in Human Skin.” About: On bookshelves around the world, surrounded by ordinary books bound in paper and leather, rest other volumes of a distinctly strange and grisly sort: those bound in human skin. Would you know one if you held it in your hand? In Dark Archives, Megan Rosenbloom seeks out the historical and scientific truths behind anthropodermic bibliopegy--the practice of binding books in this most intimate covering. Dozens of such books live on in the world's most famous libraries and museums. Dark Archives exhumes their origins and brings to life the doctors, murderers, and indigents whose lives are sewn together in this disquieting collection. Along the way, Rosenbloom tells the story of how her team of scientists, curators, and librarians test rumored anthropodermic books, untangling the myths around their creation and reckoning with the ethics of their custodianship. Megan Rosenbloom was the co-founder and director of Death Salon, the event arm of The Order of the Good Death, and a proponent of the Death Positive movement. She leads a research team called The Anthropodermic Book Project that aims to find the historical and scientific truths behind the world's alleged books bound in human skin, or anthropodermic bibliopegy, and her bestselling debut book about this practice, titled Dark Archives: A Librarian's Investigation into the Science and History of Books Bound in Human Skin, was a New York Times Editors Choice and won the 2021 LAMPHHS Best Monograph Award. Home funeral director Glenda Villegas guides families in creating meaning with home funerals. After learning valuable lessons about what it's like to plan a funeral for the unexpected loss of a loved one, Glenda started a career working in the funeral industry. She first worked in pre-need cemetery sales, then moved on to family services where she learned how to serve families at death. During these years, Glenda learned the funeral industry inside and out. She realized her path led to providing home funerals for families after a death. Her desire to serve families through education about laws related to death care, combined with the option of a home funeral experience, led her to become a licensed funeral director. Today Glenda teaches families how to care for their dead, helping to facilitate the grief process by creating meaning with home funerals. Date: 5/3/23 How The Death Positive Movement is Giving us Life Death is having a rebirth! People today are going back to their roots with the re-adoption of home wakes and funerals. Centuries ago, this was the common way to handle death. People would die at home and remain there for the viewing and the ceremony to honor their life. In fact, the “living room” was given its name because that's where those who were still alive congregated before they went into the parlor to pay their respects to the deceased person. We just forgot- death is not a medical experience- it's a human one. 80%-90% of a positive end of life experience depends on two things: 1) Knowing the truth about end of life. 2) Planning ahead!!! I learned that no matter who you are and where you live in the world, death is our common unifier in our humanity- and we can change the world with presence, compassion and education. In This Episode, You Will Learn: Topic #1 What is the Death Positive Movement Topic #2 How by doing these 2 things makes a better end of life experience by 80%-90%. Topic #3 Why Death is actually our greatest teacher about life. It seems most people feel obligated to cringe or shut down when the thought of the inevitable surfaces. But the simple fact exists that we will all leave this life at some point. Ali talks with Valoria Walker and Lauren Lyster-Mensh who are trained as end-of-life doulas, people who shepherd the dying and their loved ones through the often difficult, emotional, complicated process. They serve as non-medical advocates and holistic supporters of the person passing. Valoria and Laura talk about their experiences, the death positivity movement, death cafes and how we can all start planning for and normalizing conversations about death. If you have questions or guest suggestions, Ali would love to hear from you. Call or text her at (323) 364-6356. Or email go-ask-ali-podcast-at-gmail.com. Welcome to The Violet Vulture! It's a solo episode today talking about something I've been putting off discussing for a while now due to fear of shame or backlash: how can I, a devoted Death Doula, find "Death Positive" to be a term that really doesn't do it for me anymore? And, admittedly, I unpack why it might never have been terribly aligned in the first place. In this episode, we'll get into the following and then some: More background on what got me into being a Death Doula We define Death Positive in a nutshell Where having a term like "death positive" has its strengths And, of course, we get into plenty of the limitations and where I think it falls short I give y'all some of the deets on my near-death experience The importance of scaling your work to your community The value in putting a higher premium on prioritizing connection and community care over having perfect language Validation for those that agree and what alternatives might be more lined up with you (and validation if you're a die hard "death positive" stan) CN for death talk, medical trauma, mentions of violence and climate crisis If you're keen to get the hot goss on why I'm not about this popular term as much these days, this one is for you. Hot Take: We're all afraid of death – whether it's the actual state of being dead one day, the pain of dying, or how your remains will be treated. Death Positive or not, that anxiety is something that bonds us all – and while it's scary, it's important to know you're not alone. Societal norms condition us to fear death and avoid grief, but local groups like the STL Death Cafe and St. Louis' first End of Life Festival encourage people to lean into such topics. The host of STL Death Cafe, Tracy Gomillion, and grief educator Eileen Wolfington talk about destigmatizing the taboo of talking about death, dying and grief.
My guest, Stephanie Johnson, wants SLPs, future SLPs, and basically everyone to know that the end matters! Our field is uniquely positioned to advocate and support a new approach to end of life care. Communication is a key part of end of life planning. From comprehension and health literacy to expressing goals of care, connecting with loved ones, and enjoying food- SLPs can assist in all aspects. Death positivity and end of life care planning is actually life affirming. It's a focus on what matters, what we want, how we want to spend our time and energy. It's about living… And dying. Caitlin Doughty has devoted her life to death. She is a mortician, funeral home owner, and writer of three bestselling books. Her work has spawned the death-positive movement, which believes that open conversations about death and dying are the cornerstone of a healthy society. In this playback of our conversation a few years ago, Caitlin talks about why she became so interested in death and her desire to reform how Western society thinks about it. She also talks about her Anthony Bourdain-like journeys across the world to witness how other cultures practice more life-affirming funerals, unburdened by fear and morbidity. “CLOSE ENCOUNTER ON POT MOUNTAIN” and More Terrifying True Paranormal Stories! #WeirdDarknessIN THIS EPISODE: Have you heard of the “Death Positive” movement? Would you visit a Death Cafe? Would you join a Coffin Club? Why the sudden positive twist on what is typically so morbid? What's so great about death? (Discourse At The Death Diner) *** When it comes to homes, the ghosts go bump in the night. When it comes to automobiles, do they go honk in the night? (Cursed Cars and Haunted Hoopties) *** Airline pilots in the UK are reporting strange objects in the sky. Not just one pilot, but several. And not just one UFO, but many. And the sightings were close. Very close. So close that they are being described as “near misses”. (Airliners Almost Crash Into UFOs) *** In today's world, parents often worry about whether their kids are eating healthy and getting a good education, and in the case of long car trips, whether the children have their phones fully charged. It's tough being a modern parent, but at least you don't have to worry like Europeans did about your spawn being snatched by fairies. (Child Snatching Fairies) *** Two men go out for a weekend of elk hunting – and come back with the story of a creature so strange they don't know what to call it. (Close Encounter at Pot Mountain) *** At a downtown Chicago church, people are turning up in droves – not for the preaching or the powerful worship band – but to see a painting of the Virgin Mary, crying real tears. In this episode, we are shining the caregiver spotlight on Cassidy Bastien. Cassidy cared for her father who had COPD and Emphysema before he passed in 2020. I have no doubt he received exceptional care as Cassidy has been a professional Certified Nursing Assistant for 19 years. During these past 5 years, she has worked in hospice and received her certifications as a hospice and palliative care nurses aide and an end of life doula. Cassidy lives and works in Washington State and shares her story about what it was like to work in the healthcare system that was the epicenter for Covid-19 in the US. In this episode we also talk about death cafes, the differences between hospice and palliative care, and about her popular Facebook community called The Caregivers Hub Support Group. In this episode I'm joined by Chris Woodyard, where we discuss how people in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries dealt with death. How death was depicted and discussed in the press (including crude jokes), the issues surrounding funeral costs and the idea of a respectable funeral. We also discuss how mourning crepe was used for political protest and criminal disguise. We talk about how some funeral practices persist to this day - not all for the better.CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of death, suicide, child deathAbout my guest: Chris Woodyard is an Ohio writer and historian. She took her undergraduate degree in Medieval and Renaissance Studies from The Ohio State University, where her emphasis was on art history. She is the author of The Victorian Book of the Dead, a book on the popular and material culture of Victorian mourning and death, as well as three volumes of Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories. She has given presentations at the Costume Society of America on shroud-makers, Victorian mourning as criminal disguise, and mourning crape as a symbol of protest. She is a member of the Costume Society of America, The Association of Dress Historians, and the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals. How can focusing on death improve our lives and the world around us? This episode discusses death reflection, mindfulness, meditation, what is called the death-positive movement, and related topics. It features an interview with Dr. Sheldon Solomon social psychologist at Skidmore College.
After her husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, went through treatment, and eventually lost him, Lori LoCicero found support in Lisa Pahl, a hospice social worker who helped her navigate through grief, acceptance, and the hard questions about death. Their conversations about dying brought The Death Deck to life, a card game about questions and icebreakers about beliefs, preferences, and feelings about death. In this episode, we talk about the uncomfortable thought about the end of life and turn it into a death positive movement to help open your mind and start a deeper conversation with your loved ones about death. We also discuss hospice care and services in the US, grief support groups, and finding peace in death talks and death planning. Death is inevitable yet it should be discussed more often than not. If you want to find familiarity, comfort, and curiosity in this unconventional topic, this episode is for you. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"I wanted to be a comedian & a grief therapist. I did one of those things- and added LMFT after my name. Not funny, but useful and so full of purpose. I love my job. But I wanted to add useful content to the public domain. The things I learned in graduate school- that made me aware of the death traumas (almost) all of us carry around on the daily. Some more training in grief & death (thanatology) and the desire to share these new concepts was busting. Social Media was just so dang daunting- talking about death online? Um. Some people were not a fan. And THEY LET YOU KNOW. But I persisted. A series of bad TikTok's. Terrible-looking Insta posts. A few live videos. I apologize to you all -you can't un-see that. But the series- 30 EOL Doulas in 30 Days was born. And ta-da- it felt right- we were speaking to (and being useful to) both EOLD's and the public. I look forward to offering you more of these series!" See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
