Some places don't just hold memories—they refuse to be forgotten. I recently took a drive to Iola, Kansas, to visit the Sleeper Mortuary, a building that stands frozen in time, untouched since its days as a funeral home. But it holds more than just the echoes of the past; it pulses with unseen energy, eerie relics, and whispers of the unknown. Paranormal investigator, author and owner of the Sleeper Mortuary, Tory Westhoff knew from the moment she stepped inside, the building had chosen her as much as she had chosen it. We discussed the haunted history of Sleeper Mortuary, where ghostly encounters, hidden artifacts, and eerie phenomena paint a picture of a place where the past is very much alive. Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Oops. Too late. Join us for an unforgettable episode of The Circle Is Podcast as Rachel True and Mat Auryn welcome Mortellus, a lineage third-degree Gardnerian high priestex, mortician, and necromancer known worldwide for their expertise in death care and funerary rites. Mortellus, author of The Bones Fall in a Spiral and the forthcoming Necrobotany, shares their experiences as a mortician who bridges magick with death, offering an intimate look into their lifelong connection with the deceased—an experience rooted in a near-death event during childhood. We dig into the meaning of necromancy in both practical and magical contexts, exploring how working with the dead shapes Mortellus's unique perspective on witchcraft and ritual. Mortellus breaks down Western fears around death and explains how traditions like Wicca are often misunderstood as strictly focused on life, shedding light on how their craft blends ancestral work with death magick in a way that defies stereotypes. The conversation also unearths hidden lore surrounding plants used in death rites, drawing on themes from Necrobotany, where Mortellus explores the use of funerary plants to honor the dead and cultivate transformation in the garden. They also share their perspective on why the dead stay near. Join us as we traverse the worlds of life and death, ritual and magic, and gain rare wisdom from Mortellus on how to embrace death as a natural, transformative force.Mortellus' Links:LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/acrowandthedeadOur Links:Rachel True Website: https://truehearttarot.comMat Auryn Website: https://auryn.netModern Witch Podcast Network: https://modernwitch.comTrue Heart Intuitive Tarot, Guidebook And Deck: https://a.co/d/9ZNyRu1The Psychic Art of Tarot: Opening Your Inner Eye for More Insightful Readings: https://a.co/d/dUBT1bZPsychic Witch: A Metaphysical Guide to Meditation, Magick & Manifestation: https://a.co/d/bHelDwUMastering Magick: A Course in Spellcasting for the Psychic Witch: https://amzn.to/3VesGalPisces Witch: Unlock the Magic of Your Sun Sign: https://a.co/d/cGqcG61

Tanya is a licensed funeral director and has direct experience managing a funeral home and crematorium. According to the Adams County Historical Society, the Civil War greatly impacted American funeral practices. The ACHS is hosting Mortuary practices:  How the death profession was changed by the Civil War October 30th at 7 p.m. Maria Lynn, Archives Assistant says Duane Hills and Neva FinGado will be discussing the history of embalming practices in the United States and how the Civil War played a vital role in moving the death care profession and the preparation of the deceased into a new direction. “They talk about not only the Civil War, but the one of the gentlemen that wrote books. He actually worked for many years for Joseph Gobblers Sons, which was in Washington, DC, Funeral Home. It's still there today, and they still have very high-profile funerals. And I do believe that President Lincoln, after he was killed, he did he was taken eventually to the Sons Funeral Home, “said Lynn. During the Civil War, there were no dog tags to identify soldiers or federal hospitals. Andrew Dalton, Executive Director of the Adams County Historical Society and Gettysburg Beyond the Battle Museum adds there was a decline to preserve the bodies for long distance transportation and people were returning to practice buying the deceased near their home quickly. “After the Battle of Gettysburg, the town was so overwhelmed by the dead that I'm sure it was not available for every transportation. You know? And you know, if you think about it, there are like seven, 6 or 7000 bodies left behind at Gettysburg, meant almost all of them buried in temporary graves. But it was just an overwhelming undertaking for the town. And to deal with this, you know, there were some agencies that came in to help the Sanitary Commission, you know, the Sisters of Charity, a group of nuns from Emmitsburg. But for the most part, the task of dealing with this was left to the townspeople. So that's just a really important dimension here. But yeah, no dog tags, no ability to identify graves except for what was left in people's pockets. You know, if he died at a hospital, it was more likely that you would have given your name and information to someone who could then, you know, associate that with the body. But in many, many cases, you know, they're digging through people's bags and belongings and having sex and trying to find, you know, some sort of identifying mark, “said Dalton.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In a disturbing breach of trust and legal boundaries, Candace Chapman Scott, a 37-year-old former mortuary worker from Arkansas, has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the theft and sale of human body parts. The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas made the announcement on Thursday, marking a significant development in a case that has shocked the medical and legal communities. Scott was implicated in a scheme involving the transportation of body parts across state lines and conspiring to commit mail fraud. According to federal authorities, she was employed by a service provider contracted to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). This institution receives cadavers donated for medical research through its Anatomical Gift Program, which Scott exploited for her illicit activities. The case unfolded when Scott, using a Facebook group for enthusiasts of "oddities," contacted a man from Pennsylvania on October 28, 2021. She introduced herself as a mortician associated with UAMS, revealing that her responsibilities included the cremation of medical cadavers. During their correspondence, Scott inquired if the man knew anyone interested in purchasing an embalmed human brain, setting the stage for a series of illegal transactions. From October 31, 2021, to July 15, 2022, Scott sent 24 boxes filled with stolen body parts, including a human brain, heart, skullcap, kidneys, livers, hands, and a female pelvis with femurs, all of which she pilfered from UAMS. These parcels were transported via the U.S. Postal Service to her contact in Pennsylvania. In exchange, Scott received $10,625, transferred to her through PayPal. The FBI intervened on July 13, 2022, with a search warrant executed at Scott's residence in Little Rock. Agents discovered numerous stolen body parts stored inappropriately in boxes and trash bags. Upon being questioned, Scott admitted her role in the transactions and her method of receiving payments. As Scott awaits sentencing, the legal ramifications and the breach of ethical standards she perpetrated have ignited a discourse on the oversight of mortuary services and the protection of donated cadavers intended for scientific research. The trust placed in medical institutions by donors and their families has been severely undermined by this case, prompting calls for stricter regulations and oversight in the handling of anatomical gifts. The implications of this case extend beyond the immediate legal consequences for Scott. It highlights critical vulnerabilities in the systems intended to honor and utilize the altruistic donations of bodies for medical science. As the community and the families affected by this breach seek justice, the case serves as a somber reminder of the need for vigilance and integrity in medical and mortuary practices.
