Usually I chat with wonderful wedding suppliers who share their wisdom from years of working in the wedding industry. This week, we switch things up and speak to a couple who 8 years ago were planning their perfect day. Gavin and Ian look back on their special day(s) and share what made the occasion so special and what (if anything) they would do differently. A great listen for couples currently in the midst of wedding planning dilemmas.

After meeting through a mutual friend in 1993, Amy Walter and Kathryn Hamm knew early on in their relationship they’d both found the person they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with. Despite legal restrictions at the time, the two decided to declare their love in front of family and friends with a heartfelt commitment ceremony in 1999, a moment they now consider to be their “first wedding.” After seeing the limited amount of resources available to those planning same-sex weddings, Kathryn’s entrepreneurial mom founded GayWeddings.com, which Kathryn joined in 2005 as the company’s president and co-owner. Under Kathryn’s leadership, GayWeddings.com was acquired by WeddingWire. Fast forward to 2013, when Kathryn and Amy renewed their vows and united their family legally under the eyes of the law. (Same-sex marriage was legalized in Washington, DC, although it was still not recognized as legal in their home state of Virginia.) On this episode, the two share their unique experiences navigating wedding planning as a lesbian couple in the late ’90s and then again nearly 15 years later, highlighting how they discovered the true meaning of marriage and commitment along the way. This is their story. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's the sixth full episode of Put A Ring On It Podcast. We are BEYOND humbled to have Kathryn Hamm, publisher of GayWeddings.com, talking with us about same-sex weddings and reinterpreting what you see in the blogs and magazines in the wedding world. She helps to break down the core of wedding planning, ways you can personalize your wedding day, and how to be more inclusive of all communities. “When it comes to ‘capturing love,’ especially when a same-sex couple is the subject, rules were also made to be broken. Reassembled. Reinterpreted. Revised. Repurposed. This is the gift that same-sex couples have introduced into the wedding trends of today.” - The New Art of Capturing Love, by Thea Dodds and Kathryn Hamm For show notes, goodies, and links mentioned - visit the Put A Ring On It website.
