Hey Scummers! This week on the Underhive Lorekeepers Podcast, Spamuel forces Nathan to endure more than ninety minutes of something he never asked for, never wanted and will likely spend the rest of the year complaining about. The Vespid. That's right, we're talking about the Tau Empire's favourite winged allies, the Stingwings themselves. Hailing from the crystal-covered world of Vespid, these insectoid xenos have buzzed their way across battlefields for centuries, carrying neutron blasters, mysterious communication helms, and enough unanswered questions to make an Inquisitor nervous.Join us as we dive into the origins of the Vespid, their hive-based society, their first contact with the Tau Empire, and the ongoing debate surrounding those suspicious Communion Helms. Are the Vespid loyal allies fighting for the Greater Good, or are they simply the galaxy's most heavily armed bee colony?Nathan certainly has some opinions, most of those opinions can be summarised as "burn them". Several bee puns are made. None of them improve Nathan's mood. The discussion only stings further when we explore how the Tau managed to recruit the Vespid into the Empire. Nathan remains unconvinced that giant alien insects wearing strange helmets isn't suspicious. Will Spamuel convince him that the Vespid are actually cool?Hive got some bad news for you.The answer is no.So grab your flamer, don your beekeeper suit, and bee prepared for an episode packed with obscure xenos lore, Tau shenanigans, questionable diplomacy, and one man's relentless descent into xenophobic grumbling.Because if there's one thing this episode proves, it's that Nathan's hatred of xenos wasn't nearly strong enough before he learned about giant space bees.Buzz on over and join us, Scummers. When your school trips involve fishing Lough Melvin and the Kylemore system in Connemara, there is a good chance you might get handy at fishing. This was obviously the case with Sammy McGowan and no doubt helped him to burst on to the Irish Team as a 19-year-old on Loch Leven in Scotland. Sammy won top Irish rod on this first cap and went on to earn many more international caps while still in his twenties. Hailing from Co. Down, Sammy is well known on the Irish fly fishing scene. He took a step back for a while from the competition fishing in latter years but hopes to get back to it again. Sammy turned his attention to dying and sourcing fly tying materials. In what started out as a hobby, it grew and grew for him and since Covid, has now become his main job, running his business, Irish Fly Supplies. For more, visit https://irish-fly-supplies.square.site/For this episode Tom is joined by Mike Keady and they look back at how the mayfly fared, and talk to Sammy about his early years, competition fishing, fly tying materials, his love of Lough Neagh and, very interestingly, a Pink Flamingo which has nothing to do with fly-tying materials! Interview by Kris PetersAustralia's hardest working rock outfit Airbourne are the official supporting act for Guns N' Roses across the Australia and New Zealand leg of their World Tour. This high-voltage stadium tour pairs two generations of fierce rock icons.Hailing from Warrnambool, Victoria, Airbourne was formed by brothers Joel and Ryan O'Keeffe and are a seamless fit for the legendary Los Angeles band. Airbourne has spent decades carrying the torch for raw, traditional Australian hard rock. Their straight-ahead rock 'n' roll style is heavily reminiscent of pub-rock pioneers like AC/DC, slotting comfortably alongside Guns N' Roses' multi-platinum, stadium-sized catalogue. The stadium series of shows brings out the principal star power of Guns N' Roses, with original members Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan completely committed to the line-up, promising a blending of classic anthems like Sweet Child O' Mine and Welcome to the Jungle, mixed with fresh, contrasting modern tracks Atlas and Nothin'.Airbourne acts as the perfect match to ignite the stadium environment. Frontman Joel O'Keeffe is legendary for his reckless live antics, which include climbing high stage scaffolding and tearing through blazing guitar solos. Criminally more popular overseas than in their own back yard, this upcoming tour will hopefully help Airbourne gain wider acceptance where it matters. At home.HEAVY caught up with Joel to talk about the tour and the excitement of sharing the stage with Guns 'N Roses."We're coming back to tour Australia!" he enthused, "And we are very excited because one of our favorite bands of all time - Guns N' Roses - has decided to take us with them! So we're going all around Australia and it's gonna be a blast. In the world that we live in today you've got everyone attached to their phones, or you got to go to work tomorrow. We're always thinking about the future; thinking about the past, chained to this; chained to that. This is the opportunity to literally live right in the present and rock and just be purely free. No phone. No job. Nothing but beers and Guns 'N Roses. What gets better than that?"In the full interview, Joel talked more about the upcoming tour and what it means to Airbourne to be playing. He described role as openers and the expectations on the band, as well as the potential for learning by watching one of the worlds best in action. We talked about Airbourne's live show and what to expect, including his own high energy performances. Airbourne's recently released new single was spoken about, as was their upcoming album and what to expect. Joel went deeper into how the album respects the life and legacy of Lemmy Kilmeister and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This episode explores the complex security and political landscape of El Salvador under President Nayib Bukele, featuring insights from expert José Salguero. We discuss the history of gang violence, the security policies implemented, and the implications for democracy and regional influence.Nayib Bukele's rise to power was marked by promises of security and stability. However, as Salguero points out, the current security situation cannot be attributed solely to Bukele's policies. Instead, it is a culmination of various factors, including previous government actions and historical trends.Looking ahead, the question remains: will El Salvador ever exit this state of exception? Salguero suggests that the historical context reveals a pattern in which authoritarian regimes maintain power by manipulating public fear and securing compliance through promises of stability.Hailing from El Salvador, José Salguero is a PhD candidate at the Philipps University of Marburg, a Development Economist and Peace and Security Researcher.Follow LatinNews for analysis on economic, political, and security developments in Latin America & the Caribbean. Hailing from Noosa, Australia, Harry Bryant is a frothing, underground charger who'll drive halfway across Australia to hunt for remote slabs. He's also a bonafide surf star—his blond bowl-cutted head recognizable in lineups worldwide. One window into his full throttle operation and persona is 2024's Motel Hell, a full-length surf feature that he made with director Dave Fox. It contains a storyline, scenes shot in Outback pubs, a mysterious psychedelic milk, and a glut of meaty tubes. Bryant experiments with all manner of surfboard design, takes a healthy interest in surf history, and throws himself into his travels, which is to say he goes slow, gets down with the locals, and often rides boards from area shapers. His most recent offering is Roasted, also directed by Fox. The title describes what happens to the skin after a marathon session in warm climes. There are, of course, many barrels and many rail carves and vicious hacks. In this episode of Soundings, Bryant talks with Jamie Brisick about road tripping through Australia, finding balance, the chaotic making of Motel Hell, his introduction to Hawaii, and his fascination with surf craft. Today, we are joined by Kate O'Flynn from the Apple TV show Widow's Bay. We got the chance to discuss her superstitions, which include some rather interesting bird-related ideas. We also spoke about her recent turn taking the lead in Ep. 4 of Widow's Bay, "Beach Reads", which sees O'Flynn's character, Patricia, assistant to Matthew Rhys' Mayor Tom, organising a town party while dealing with some old school "friends". It's safe to say that, thanks to an ominous party-planning book, things take a turn for the supernatural. We also discuss if she walked away with any party tips from this experience.. Thanks to Kate for sitting down with us for this wonderful chat about the show, now streaming on Apple TV. About "Widow's Bay" In "Widow's Bay," something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There's no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don't. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again. Blending genuine horror with character-driven comedy, "Widow's Bay" features an ensemble cast led by Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey. The supporting cast includes K Callan and Emmy Award winner Jeff Hiller. Hailing from Apple Studios, "Widow's Bay" is created, showrun and executive produced by Dippold. Murai executive produces through his banner Chum Films alongside Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin and Rhys. Murai directs five episodes this season, in addition to directors Ti West, Sam Donovan and Andrew DeYoung.

The Black Rose itself symbolizes major change, hope, and optimism—core themes reflected in both the band's music and the personal journeys of its members. The rebellion was born in June 2022, when frontwoman Trybe and lead guitarist/co-writer Dave “The RockDoc” Rosenfeld—complete strangers at the time—were each on the verge of walking away from music altogether. Introduced by a mutual friend despite coming from entirely different worlds, their connection sparked an immediate creative rebirth and laid the foundation for Black Rose Rebellion. His precision, intensity, and passion translate seamlessly from profession to performance. Her impeccable timing, hard-hitting power, and dynamic, lyrical playing make her the unmistakable heartbeat of the band. On this episode of HALO Talks, Pete Moore sits down with internationally renowned marketing expert John Dwyer, also known as JD, for a deep dive into proven direct response marketing strategies that deliver real ROI . . . no vague brand-building promises. Hailing from Australia and celebrated for his practical, results-oriented approach, Jack shares stories from his decades-long career, including how a simple contest formula brought hundreds of qualified leads to gyms at a fraction of the usual cost, and why creative incentives like vacation vouchers trump discounting your own services. With anecdotes spanning from licensing Disney characters to orchestrating a bank campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld, Dwyer reveals the nuts and bolts of incentive-based marketing, the mindset shifts needed to outpace the competition, the power of persistent idea generation, and the importance of a strong call to action. Whether you're running a gym, leading a fitness franchise, or simply want to sharpen your marketing acumen, this episode is packed with insights and actionable takeaways from one of the industry's most persistent and inventive minds. On viral gym incentives, Jack says, "Instead of giving up the first month membership, which of course every gym does, they replace that by saying, join my fitness center and I will give you a free vacation to Disney World, New York, Orlando, call the hotspots, and we give these vacation vouchers to them for $50." Key themes discussed Direct response marketing vs. traditional advertising Incentive-based marketing to drive gym memberships Cost-effective lead generation strategies Using contests and giveaways for engagement Leveraging licensing and brand equity Importance of a strong call to action (CTA) Adapting marketing for small and medium businesses A Few Key Takeaways 1. Direct Response Marketing Over Traditional Branding: John emphasized a fundamental difference between his approach and that of traditional ad agencies: Instead of building brand love in hopes customers will eventually try the product, his strategy is to get people to try the product first so they fall in love with the brand later. Measurability and ROI are central, and "face on the side of a bus" advertising is dismissed for most businesses unless they're global giants like Coca-Cola or Nike (01:04). 2. Leveraging Incentives—"Happy Meal Toys" for Grown-Ups: A key to successful direct response marketing, especially in the fitness sector, is offering incentives unrelated to price discounting. Dwyer discusses "Happy Meal toy" strategies—low-cost incentives (e.g., vacation vouchers) with high-perceived value—that drive response and differentiate offers without eroding core business value (07:24). 3. Facebook Contests for Lead Generation: John shared a proven contest model for gyms and fitness centers: Run Facebook contests where prospects can win a 6- or 12-month membership. The vast majority who don't win remain red-hot leads for follow-up offers. Reported costs per lead are dramatically lower ($1–$5) than those from typical lead generation companies, with much higher volume and exclusivity of leads (04:03). 4. Powerful Call to Action is Critical: Five key elements to effective direct response are: (1) Identify the problem, (2) Aggravate it, (3) Provide a solution, (4) Offer proof (testimonials), and (5) End with a strong call to action (CTA). Dwyer noted most campaigns fail due to a weak CTA, underscoring the importance of an irresistible, incentive-based close (22:15). 5. Borrowing Equity from Big Brands & Trends: A recurring theme with John is "borrowing" the equity of established brands or cultural trends via licensing (e.g., Disney, Ninja Turtles) or celebrity endorsement (e.g., Jerry Seinfeld for a bank's ad campaign). This shortcut to consumer attention and trust can be particularly powerful for smaller enterprises when deployed wisely (13:28). Hailing from Claremont, California, a suburban city in eastern Los Angeles County, Henry Branes (Ranger Barnes, Enid Snarb) first began connecting with the meditative melodies of music through his incredibly talented parents. With a mother who played guitar and a father who was a member of the local collective The Real Jazz Band, Barnes' exciting enviroment eventually led him down the endless path of folklore, melodic mythology, and traditional tunes. Having participated in several groups in grade school and high school, the young industrious musician began to hone his craft during the cultural crossover from rock and roll to punk in the late 1970s, and decided to combine the two in one liberating location, and hasn't looked back since. In this first episode of "When I Didn't Have A Home," An Amps For Christ Podcast, Barnes takes us all the way back to the biblical beginning when he was born in La Verne before relocating to Mexico with his family and siblings, for a few years before returning to California, where he would eventually begin to connect with the spiritual sounds, and tonal textures that would later go on to define the visceral vibrations, and enviromentally epic messeages of LA-based "power violence" trailblazers Man Is The Bastard, and later Amps For Christ. Join us as we unpack the unique universe of all things AFC on this season's first episode, "The End Is The Beginning and The Beginning Is The End", where we initiate the first peel of the Glass Onion before discovering what lurks within its cosmic center.

In previous episodes, we've discussed how some genres are more aesthetic-driven (like sci fi & fantasy) and others are more structure-driven (like romance and mystery). So how do subgenres within SFF play with elements of both? How can we blend tropes and reader expectations to put fresh spins on familiar subgenres? Four-time guest and friend of the podcast Fonda Lee joins us to explore the possibilities and potential pitfalls. A lot of "genre" is really about marketing and packaging, so we also discuss the effects of knowing that end result on the process itself. How is it different if we start out with an idea of "I am going to write This Subgenre Thing" versus starting out with less of that marketing-minded specificity? How much do we play into or subvert a reader's expectations? Navigating that can be a high-wire act, trying to present new things that will delight and surprise a reader without knocking them out of the story. And what do we do if the packaging, which authors often have no control over, doesn't quite paint the right picture of the actual book? We also talk about some recent trends and shifts within SFF subgenres. [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Fonda Lee is the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of the Green Bone Saga, consisting of the novels Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy, along with a prequel novella The Jade Setter of Janloon and a short story collection, Jade Shards. Episode 368 features Nashville-based Americana songwriter Kevin Daniel. Hailing originally from North Carolina, Kevin brings a rich, soul-stirring blend of southern rock, gospel, blues, and heartfelt storytelling that he calls “Y'allternative Rock.” After years honing his craft in Brooklyn and building a reputation as a dynamic live performer, he's now calling Music City home and continuing to turn heads with his powerful voice, honest songwriting, and high-energy shows. Kevin's musical journey took a profound turn after the tragic loss of his parents in a plane crash in 2013. That grief and celebration of their adventurous lives fueled his debut EP FLY, and he's since released a string of acclaimed projects including Myself Through You, Things I Don't See, Been Here Before, and his latest full-length The Life & Adventures of Kevin Daniel (via Organic Records). He's shared stages with artists like Brittany Spencer and Mary Gauthier, toured extensively across the US, UK, and Mexico (often 100–150 dates a year), and earned praise for his ability to weave rock, soul, roots, and Appalachian influences into deeply personal songs. I featured his track “Bless Your Heart” on this episode. It's a great example of Kevin's signature mix of wit, warmth, and raw emotion that captures the spirit of Southern life with a modern edge. If you love authentic Americana with grit, soul, and plenty of heart, Kevin Daniel is a must-listen. Catch him live when he rolls through your town, and stream his music everywhere now. Please follow, rate, or review the podcast wherever you are streaming if you'd like to help us out. -- Part-Time Rockstar Productions is available in the DMV for music videos and live filming.

On March 27th, New Orleans lost a beloved member of our culinary community. Alfred Singleton, executive chef and co-owner of the landmark French-Creole restaurant Café Sbisa, passed away at the age of 46. Hailing from the Lower 9th Ward, Alfred was a true local success story. Having a passion for food, but receiving no formal training, Alfred got his education in commercial kitchens while rising quickly through the ranks of his native city's culinary scene. At the age of 36, he joined forces with Craig Napoli to become executive chef and co-owner of Café Sbisa – the same place where he had worked as a prep cook 20 years earlier. Established in 1899, Café Sbisa is the third oldest fine-dining establishment in the French Quarter – one that was in a perpetual state of limbo after Hurricane Katrina. Alfred successfully returned it to its former glory, and for the next ten years, fostered a warm atmosphere there, ensuring every guest felt welcomed and was well fed. Alfred also understood that Café Sbisa was a rare gem in his hometown: one of the few fine-dining restaurants led by a Black chef. Taking this distinction as a mandate to lead, Alfred actively embraced his role as a mentor to emerging culinary talent. Louisiana Eats was fortunate enough to have a long, in-depth conversation with the late chef back in 2016, shortly after he took the role of executive chef and co-owner of Café Sbisa. On this week's show, we bring you an extended version of that interview, as Chef Alfred reflects on his career, his management style, and how his faith and family propelled him forward. Then, we revisit our 2011 tribute to French Quarter cooking legend who was known as "King of Red Beans": Clarence "Buster" Holmes. British jazz drummer Barry Martyn and Chef Susan Spicer both share memories of their friend and mentor. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

There's something disarming about a song that doesn't try to overwhelm you, no grand gestures or towering crescendos, just a steady emotional current that pulls you under before you even realize it. Orange Animal's “Place for Me” operates in that exact space, a slow-burning folk-rock meditation that finds its power in restraint and outstanding lyricism.Hailing from the Cleveland–Akron scene, the folk band leans into a kind of weathered intimacy here, crafting a track that feels lived in from the very first note. The instrumentation is deliberately sparse, almost skeletal at times, but that's precisely what gives the song its weight. Each element from the acoustic guitar, subtle bass movement, or gente drums feels carefully placed in a way that never overwhelms.

The latest of our RE-HEATED series, where we re-issue episodes that might share something with racing stories in the news… Episode 222 featuring Chris Pook. With the Long Beach Grand Prix happening this weekend, we figured it was a good episode to re-visit. Hailing from the UK and working as a long-time Long Beach resident, Chris's path to creating the event was anything but smooth, with the detailed story in this podcast. This is of course a complimentary episode to our “Dinner with Racers” video series on MotorTrend's YouTube and MotorTrend+ streaming, where you can see the story unfold in a two-part special. Lunch was served at 555 East Steakhouse in Long Beach, CA, with the song “I Got Me” by Jane & The Boy taking us out. Thanks again to Continental Tire and Acura for making it all happen.

It happens where we live, work, and raise our families. In this special Story Collider series, each episode explores a different element of urban climate change — from fire and air to water and earth — through powerful, true stories from the people experiencing it firsthand. In this episode, our storytellers turn their attention to earth, exploring the ways humans shape the land around us — and how a changing environment shapes us in return.Part 1: While filming a wildlife documentary, filmmaker Mae Dorricott begins to notice just how profoundly human activity is shaping animal behaviour. Part 2: For Christy Marsden, climate change always felt like a distant threat until a patch of ice brought it sharply into focus.Hailing from Lancashire in the north west of England, Mae - is an underwater researcher for natural history documentaries and is currently based in Bristol. From a young age she was blessed with the privilege to visit her mother's home of Malaysia where her obsession with the sea began. The coral reefs imprinted onto Mae, and from those first snorkels as a child knew that her life would revolve around the sea. During her time studying marine biology at the university of Plymouth she worked part-time at the local Aquarium, where her passion for communication was ignited. To learn more about how good communication is essential for a healthy ocean, Mae undertook a Masters in Science communication at the University of West England. Then, in 2017 she applied and was awarded the European OWUSS scholarship, which gave her the opportunity to explore the watery world like never before. This opportunity became a springboard into the industry in which Mae currently works, specializing in underwater documentaries. Christy Marsden bikes year-round in Minneapolis, Minnesota. When she's not advocating for climate-forward policies in the city, she's working on helping people develop climate resilience in communities through her work at the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership. Christy enjoys helping people craft their experience of climate change through storytelling as a means for science and climate communication See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
