Hailing from St. Croix in the Caribbean and now based in Virginia Beach, Marcus is the co-owner and operations manager of Lifeologie Counseling Hampton Roads, a rapidly growing mental health franchise. He is also the voice behind the Gentleman Style Podcast, where he interviews experts on unconventional paths to wealth and personal growth. With a background that spans real estate, cannabis dispensaries, and ATM businesses, Marcus's journey from military service to business leadership offers invaluable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs147. On this episode we talk about: – How Marcus made his first dollar as a 10-year-old grocery store bagger and his most recent dollar as a mental health franchise owner – The transition from starting businesses from scratch to buying into a franchise model – The unique challenges and opportunities in the mental health industry, including scaling a new franchise and expanding into prescription management – Marcus's diverse entrepreneurial ventures, including real estate, ATM portfolios, and cannabis dispensaries with cutting-edge technology – The power of podcasting as a platform for learning, networking, and uncovering alternative investment strategies Top 3 Takeaways 1. Diversify your income streams: Marcus's journey shows that building wealth often means exploring multiple business models—from real estate and cannabis to mental health franchises—rather than relying solely on traditional investments. 2. Leverage your background and network: Skills honed in the military, such as leadership and adaptability, can be powerful assets in entrepreneurship. Strategic networking—like connecting with franchise brokers—can open doors to new opportunities. 3. Education and intentionality are key: Whether investing in alternative assets or starting a business, continuous learning and a clear plan are essential. Don't just avoid 401(k)s or traditional paths—educate yourself and act with purpose. Notable Quotes “If you help enough people, people will pay you for it.” “The money is better served in our hands as long as we educate ourselves and become more financially literate.” “Sink your teeth into something that you're passionate about. At the end of the day, it's still going to rise and fall based on your ability to make it rise or fall.”
Hailing from Oakland, Goapele's signature voice and powerful songwriting has made her a staple Neo-soul, R&B, and underground hip-hop. Growing up with a South African father and German-Jewish mother, she became educated on human rights issues at an early age and got her start in music as a member of a youth activism group. This led Goapele to pursue her career in the Bay's local performance scene where she collaborated with Zion I, Hieroglyphics, and Martin Luther. She self-released her debut album "Closer" and the single of the same name became a timeless hit. She was the first Black woman to have a music video on YouTube and since then she has continued to tour, release new music, and use her voice to support social change.--For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail info@historyofthebay.com--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Intro01:54 The power of music11:38 Songwriting20:25 South African heritage28:16 Youth activism32:45 First recordings36:49 Zion I 41:08 Self-releasing first album46:41 “Closer” music video50:49 New projects
At first glance, the latest installment of the cover song series is no different than any previous episode. Behind the scenes, though, serendipity is at play here. Like usual, I had quitely filled my “covers” folder over the last few months. A few weeks ago, I had accumulated enough tracks to schedule the show. I could have done it at the end of April, or last week. Next week even. Or I could have held it over until June. But no, I was determed in do on May 23. Then on my usual record store run last Friday I found a number of great Minneapolis garage rock records from the 50s and 60s. Most were compilatons, but I also found a Sundazed Music reissue of The Gestures’ self-titled album from 1966. Hailing from Mankato, MN, they had a hit in 1964 with “Run, Run, Run”, their debut single. I picked up this reissue, and loved it! Fast forward to yesterday as I was looking at the various new releases for the week. I was excited to see that Beebe Gallini had a new record out called Begged, Borrowed and Stealed! Even better was the fact that not only is this a […]

It's time for One Funny Morning with special guest, Comedian Mike E. Winfield! A little more about Mike ... His comedy is refreshing & relatable in a way that makes him a comedic genius. Hailing from Baltimore, MD, Mike E. moved to California to pursue comedy & to escape the rough streets of Baltimore, remembering how he found a gun under his Mom's pillow as a child, & thought, “I CAN'T WAIT FOR MY TEETH TO FALL OUT.” The comedy scene felt natural to him & he embraced it raking up credits such as The Late Show with David Letterman, a reoccurring role on NBC's The Office, Brad Paisley's Comedy Rodeo on Netflix, an Emmy Nomination, & multiple movies in post production, one with the rapper DMX called PIMP. Somehow in the midst of rising to the top, he had to grow up quickly because he fell in love & married an older woman with a child. That was actually the problem, he wasn't ready to be a husband, so he made many mistakes within the marriage. He has since learned & developed a bond with his stepson, or as he calls him - “ StepMAN” - because they're close in age. He takes his ups & downs in his life & marriage & turns them into jewels he releases on stage. Mike is currently on tour and can be seen at the Vail Comedy Festival this Memorial Day weekend. Check out all of his tour dates and more at www.mikewinfield.com

How are you giving others the opportunity to participate in your journey of generosity? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Matt discuss: Desiring to do more and seeing God's blessings in life's challenges.Being willing to take risks and do anything necessary. Balancing life priorities with growing a business. Encouraging employees and family to engage in generosity and giving. Doing the work with God, not on your own. Key Takeaways: Growing your business is important, but not more important than your faith, your family, and your health. When those are going well, your business will grow.Get into peer groups and mentorships as soon as you can. Even when opportunities are given to you, they do require work. When you can give back, share opportunities with others. Look for opportunities to give that are unique to your business and position. "Balance - work towards it as early on in your career as you possibly can. You won't regret it. The work, the customer relationships, it will all take care of itself if you can focus and get your priorities straight and work on your faith, your relationships with your family, and with your spouse in particular." — Matthew Hiltz About Matthew Hiltz: Matthew Hiltz is the Founder/CEO of Hiltz Propane Systems, Inc. in Marietta, PA. The truth about the US Indian boarding school policy has largely been written out of the history books. Started in the 1800s across the US and Canada, Indian Boarding schools were government-funded and often church-run. The goal? Forced assimilation of Native children into white society under the belief of “Kill the Indian, Save the Man,” which still contributes to how we see and treat Indigenous Peoples today. In this episode recorded in 2021, we delve into the haunting legacy of Indian Boarding Schools in North America through the voices of SunRose IronShell and Manapee LaMere, representatives of the Sioux Nation of Indians. About $1.5 million in grants to digitize archival records and collect first-person accounts of Native Americans who attended U.S. government-run boarding schools have been cut as part of the Trump administration's efforts to drastically reshape cultural programs and transform the federal government. Sadly, the marked and unmarked graves of children have been found in the residential school systems of both Canada and the US. The total is now over 6,500 indigenous youth, having died amid accusations of abuse and neglect. Our guests, SunRose IronShell and Manape LaMere, talk about the history of this generational trauma, and how bringing home the remains has become a way to tell the children's stories and hold to account these schools. Ellie Ruth is a genre-defying string player and songwriter whose roots run deep in the rolling hills of Kentucky. Hailing from Louisville, her music draws on the tension between tradition and innovation—merging the raw spirit of Appalachian fiddle tunes with the nuance of chamber music and modern folk. A multi-instrumentalist and bold lyricist, Ellie performs with a five-string violin that becomes an extension of her voice—fluid, expressive, and unafraid. Her songs tell stories shaped by memory, movement, and a restless curiosity, inviting listeners into dreamlike landscapes that are both familiar and new.

Hailing from Iowa, Jackson first made national headlines by winning the NXR Heartland Regional in 2022, earning the nickname “The King of Iowa” from The Running Effect. Each member had a unique upbringing with music: Martinez played in bands or various genres, including a church band; Aitala picked up guitar in high school and kept at it after COVID-19 hit; Mercado's dad played drums while he was growing up, so he picked up a pair of drumsticks; and Kerman's mother threw a guitar into his lap when he was just 2 years old, sparking a new passion. Mercado and Aitala went to high school together, Mercado being a part of multiple bands at the same time while Aitala admired from the sidelines, wanting to join in. The two met Martinez and Kerman through some of Mercado's projects; Martinez booked a show and didn't have a band, so she asked the other three to hop in. When people talk about the greatest guitarists of all time, names like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page often come up. But in the world of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, few names resonate louder than Tommy Emmanuel. Hailing from Australia, Tommy has spent his life redefining what one person and one guitar can do — creating soundscapes so full and expressive, you'd swear there's a full band on stage. But it's just Tommy, his guitar, and a heart full of music.Born in 1955 in NSW, Tommy was destined for a life in music. By the age of four, he was already strumming along on a homemade guitar, inspired by the country music on the family radio. When he was just six, he and his older brother Phil were already performing professionally, touring rural Australia as part of the Emmanuel family band. After the sudden death of their father in 66, the Emmanuel family relocated and Tommy's passion for the guitar only deepened. He didn't receive formal training. Instead, he learned by ear, copying the sounds he heard and developing a unique style shaped by necessity, emotion, and endless hours of practice. If there's one name Tommy Emmanuel reveres more than any other, it's Chet Atkins. The legendary guitarist's fingerpicking style — where melody, bass, and rhythm are played simultaneously — blew Tommy's mind as a child. From the moment he heard Atkins' music, Tommy knew he wanted to master the same technique.Years later, not only did Tommy meet his hero, but the two became close friends and collaborators. In one of the greatest honors a guitarist can receive, Chet Atkins named Tommy a Certified Guitar Player (CGP) — a title he gave to only a handful of musicians worldwide. Their 1996 collaboration, The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World, showcased both artists' brilliance and earned a GRAMMY nomination.Though he played in bands during the 1980s — it was Tommy's solo work that truly revealed his genius. Armed with a single acoustic guitar, Tommy became a one-man orchestra. He played melody, bass, harmony, and percussion all at once, creating dynamic performances that are equal parts musical and theatrical. From dazzling renditions of Classical Gas and Somewhere Over the Rainbow to heart-pounding originals, Tommy's concerts are unforgettable.Over the decades, Tommy has become not only a global guitar icon but also a tireless ambassador for fingerstyle playing. He's released over 30 albums, toured relentlessly across six continents, and collaborated with legends including Mark Knopfler, Jason Isbell, Jake Shimabukuro, Molly Tuttle, John Knowles, and many others.Tommy Emmanuel doesn't just perform — he teaches, encourages, and uplifts. Many students admire his technique, but it's his heart-led approach that sticks with them. Tommy's life hasn't been without challenges. Like many who spend their lives on the road, he struggled with addiction earlier in his career. But he's been open about those difficult years, crediting his recovery and ongoing sobriety to a mix of faith, family, and a renewed connection to the purpose behind his music. His story is one of resilience, not just in music but in life. He's spoken publicly about mindfulness, presence, and living with gratitude — all of which shine through in his playing. Now in his late 60s, Tommy Emmanuel shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to tour internationally, sell out shows, release new music, and connect with fans of all ages. Whether he's playing on a small club stage or headlining a major festival, Tommy pours everything into every note. There's a reason people call him a force of nature. Join us in conversation to hear Tommy talk about his life, his stories and his music. To learn more head for his website hereTo connect with me, jump onto my website. I hope you enjoy this episode!

Brittany Bowman is the drummer for pop superstar Demi Lovato. An insanely great drummer and a wonderful person to boot! Hailing from Chicago, Britt sold her soul to music at the tender age of five years old. Her innate sense of rhythm was discovered in the backseat of her mom's car as she hit the headrest to the beat of the music on the radio—The Beatles were one of her favorites. By the age of ten, Britt discovered Green Day and got her first kit, beginning her budding romance with punk rock and drums. By the time she hit 15, she was playing notable venues around the Chicagoland area such as The House of Blues and Bottom Lounge, just to name a few. At 21, Britt made the move to Los Angeles where she now has her own studio and works as a hired gun for artists such as Demi Lovato, KiNG MALA, Meg Myers, Royal and the Serpent, and Toni Cornell, among others. She also focuses on session work for artists of all genres, while developing her YouTube and Instagram following by posting covers and play-through videos. With a growing online presence, Britt has piqued the interest of reputable companies who have brought her on board as an endorsee, trusting her opinion and talents to showcase their products on camera. Britt is constantly honing her talents, as well as seeking additional opportunities to tour and build relationships with like-minded bands and artists.
