Day 1,553.Today, in the aftermath of one of the most intense aerial assaults on Ukraine of the entire war, we report on fresh strikes against Russia's Tuapse oil refinery – the site of the extraordinary “manmade volcano” that has become symbolic of Kyiv's campaign against Moscow's energy infrastructure. Antonia Langford joins us live from Kyiv after witnessing ballistic missile attacks on the capital firsthand. We also examine the shrinking number of countries contributing to the Czech-led ammunition initiative, which now supplies around half of Ukraine's artillery ammunition, and assess Britain's attempt to regain control of the political narrative after last week's easing of sanctions on Russia by unveiling new measures targeting cryptocurrency networks accused of financing Putin's war machine.Contributors:Francis Dearnley (Host on Ukraine: The Latest). @FrancisDearnley on X.Dominic Nicholls (Host on Ukraine: The Latest). @DomNicholls on X.Antonia Langford (Freelance Journalist in Kyiv). @Antonialford on X.NOW IN FULL VIDEO WITH MAPS & BATTLEFIELD FOOTAGE:Every episode is now available on our YouTube channel shortly after the release of the audio version. Valero's Benicia refinery employed hundreds of people and contributed millions in taxes to the local government for decades. Now, with the refinery on its way out, local leaders hope Benicia can be a leading example for how cities transition away from the fossil fuel industry. 2026-04-28 | UPDATES #186 | Tuapse burns – a third wave of strikes has reignited earlier fires and started new ones. Now the flames are burning out of control and may consume the whole plant. This is a major strategic and psychological blow for Putin and his war economy. In this episode – Budanov's doctrine and the end of the 'no cards' lie. April 27–28, 2026 — as Tuapse oil refinery and port burns for the third time in twelve days. It is just after 2 AM on the night of 27th to 28th April 2026, on the Black Sea coast. Above the Russian port city of Tuapse — population thirty-five thousand, one of the most strategically important oil export hubs Russia possesses — the air is filled with the sound of more than a dozen consecutive explosions.By dawn, 164 Russian firefighters with 46 fire appliances are battling what Krasnodar Krai's governor describes as "a major fire at the oil refinery." Residents of the streets nearest the burning Rosneft facility are being evacuated. School Number 6 in Tuapse has been opened as a temporary accommodation centre. Drone groups, eyewitnesses report, came in low across the sea before striking both the maritime terminal and the refinery itself.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------A REQUEST FOR HELP!I'm heading back to Kyiv next month, to film, do research and conduct interviews. The ongoing war in the Middle East has continued to impact fuel prices and supply, and a fire in one of Australia's two refineries added even more strain. But there was some good news with the PM confirming the fire wouldn't escalate the fuel security plan and that more diesel had been secured following overseas visits.

Australia's fragile fuel supply is under further threat after the country's largest operating oil refinery burst into flames overnight.
Authorities say equipment failure caused a major fire at an Australian oil refinery on Wednesday night that is expected to affect the national fuel supply.
The current fuel supply crisis in Australia is threatening to worsen. The reason is a fire at an oil refinery in Geelong, Victoria, which is affecting production. The incident is extremely bad news for Prime Minister Albanese, who is currently visiting Australia's neighbours in Southeast Asia and is looking for more supplies of gasoline, diesel and kerosene.
With the nation's fuel supplies under threat because of the Iran war, the Federal Government has described a fire at a Victorian oil refinery, as "a setback".

Australia has two oil refineries and late on Wednesday night one of them sprung a leak that became a half-day fire. Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the blaze at Viva Energy Refinery in Geelong was “not great timing”. But why is Australia reliant on such fragile energy infrastructure? A major fire at one of Australia's two remaining oil refineries isn't expected to have much effect on national prices. The fire at Viva Energy's Geelong facility will hinder its ability to make petrol, but it can still produce diesel and jet fuel. It's one of only two sites in Australia and produces 10% of the country's fuel. Australia Correspondent Murray Olds told Mike Hosking the fire underlines the perilous nature of the country's fuel supplies, as they have very limited refining capacity. A fire raging at Australia's Geelong oil refinery since last night has been extinguished. The blaze broke out at the motor gasoline unit, and is expected to affect petrol production. The site produces 10 percent of the country's fuel - one of only two refineries in Australia. Australian correspondent Murray Olds says investigations will be taking place into the incident - and the damage is 'extensive'. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Deep Dive: The government is unveiling its new defence strategy that places drones and autonomous systems at the forefront of how it prepares for future conflict. Shaped by lessons from Ukraine and the Middle East, the plan signals a major shift away from traditional big-ticket military assets toward cheaper, scalable technologies designed for speed, surveillance, and agility. But as the government commits billions to this transformation, questions remain about whether Australia can move fast enough to keep up with the pace of modern warfare, close critical capability gaps, and balance ambitious spending with existing defence priorities. The war with Iran has entered its second month, and President Trump says the onus is on Tehran to quickly agree to end it or face the widespread destruction of its energy resources, including power plants and oil hubs. But Iran remains publicly defiant, calling U.S. demands "unrealistic," and continuing its attacks on Israel and the region. Nick Schifrin reports. There are “a couple” of empty tanks at Marsden Point which are in good condition and could be ready to store fuel within 2-3 months, the import terminal's owner says. The Government is considering helping refurbish the terminal's empty fuel tanks to quickly increase storage capacity amid the oil crisis. Currently 300 million litres are in use, but another 350m litres could be converted. The empty tanks were cleaned out after the refinery was converted to an import terminal, Channel Infrastructure chief executive Rob Buchanan told Mike Hosking. “They're all ex-crude tanks, so we can't immediately put petrol or jet fuel in them. There are tanks there that you can put diesel into much more quickly, which is one of the options that we've been looking at.” The company had already added 100 million litres of storage, Buchanan said, and would “absolutely” fund any further conversions of tanks. “The key issue is that we would need a customer for those tanks at the end of it. So if we're going to spend the money and do the work to bring a tank into service, we need somebody that wants to put fuel in it.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
