Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil "The Media Giant" Haley and Greg Hanna of TOSS C3 will interview Rick Cerrone. In the sports and in media industries, Rick Cerrone has done it all. Named just the fourth ‘'Editor-in-Chief' in the 80-year history of Baseball Digest in 2018, he has been an MLB executive, talk-show host and was at the helm of public relations for the greatest sports franchise in the world – the New York Yankees – in the nation's number-one media market. For 11 of the most successful and tumultuousseasons in New York Yankees' history, Rick held what Sports Illustrated called, "The Hottest Seat in Sports." As the team's Senior Director of Media Relations from 1996 through 2006, he worked side-by-side with some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment. He counseled perhaps the most powerful and controversial owner in the history of professional sports, George M. Steinbrenner; worked closely with the game's most-respected manager, Joe Torre; and guided and supported the most-recognizable players for the sports industry's most-valuable franchise in the nation's number-one media market.

CEO of Props -- Episode page with video, transcript and more ** I WANT TO WRITE MY BOOK (ad) ** My guest for Episode #196 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Joe Perello, president and CEO of Props, a first-of-its-kind, marketing technology platform enabling DTC brands. Joe is also a member of the board of directors of New York Cruise Lines. Prior to Props, he co-founded and led an NYC-based digital agency and bootstrapped it into an award-winning shop. In 2003, Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed Joe as the first Chief Marketing Officer of the City of New York. Joe and his team created the first self-funded marketing and promotional engine in the City's history, generating more than $100 million and paving the way for unprecedented results in tourism. Joe was the Vice President of Business Development for the New York Yankees during some of their most successful seasons, reporting to the late George M. Steinbrenner. In this episode, Joe tells his favorite mistake story about a “work divorce” that was “really hard” — was it a mistake to separate himself from a company and certain workplace relationships? How did he learn to take responsibility for those relationships? We also discuss how to create a culture of learning from mistakes and creating an environment where you can be wrong. Questions and Topics: Work divorces are hard… it WAS the right thing to do Felt like it WAS a mistake as it happened – turned out to be best… Fear — no idea what I was going to do next…. — uncertainty or a mistake It's always a judgment call – a mistake or not?? The founder dynamic made it more difficult – personal pride Lessons learned to prevent future work divorces?? Culture of learning from mistakes? “Create an environment where you can be wrong…” Getting things wrong helps us get it right?? “I don't want to be right I just want to win” Direct marketing – test and learn, test and learn Fail fast, fail often? Props – how did the company pivot?? Mistakes that marketers make? Being inauthentic or failed attempt at authenticity that didn't ring true? Mistaken perceptions of the late George Steinbrenner… public perception vs reality? We are joined by Lindsay Berra, who gives us the inside scoop about "It Ain't Over," an upcoming documentary about her grandfather, Yogi, which will be shown at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival. Lindsay brings us back to July 18, 1999, where we will accompany her to Yankee Stadium for 'Yogi Berra Day,' marking her grampa's return to the Bronx after nearly 15 years following a falling out with principal owner George M. Steinbrenner. It was a magical afternoon, with Don Larsen tossing the ceremonial first pitch to Yogi, tapping the gloves used by pitcher David Cone and catcher Joe Girardi. Cone, of course, went on to pitch the 16th perfect game in Major League history, a 6-0 blanking of the Montreal Expos. We'll share Yogi stories, discuss '90's pop culture (who knew Yogi was such a Seinfeld fan?) and much more!

Welcome again to the Bill Bradley Collective, where this week in deference to our season-wide theme of criminal justice and sports, your hosts examine the life and crimes of George M. Steinbrenner III. Like many bull's-eyes on the proverbial Collective dartboard, Steinbrenner is born into the dual advantage of white privilege and inherited wealth. His beginnings as a shipping magnate of the Great Lakes eventually leads to ownership of the New York Yankees in 1973. Until his death in 2010, George assumes a massive celebrity persona in New York City, not unlike a certain businessman who failed all the way upwards to eventually become President. Like Donald Trump, Steinbrenner's outspoken brand of cult of celebrity somewhat overshadows a life of serious white-collar crime. A tale of two cases: illegal contributions to then President Richard Nixon in 1974 under the veil of “bonuses” to shipbuilding cohorts that results in a paltry fifteen month suspension from commissioner Bowie Kuhn, and what was a mere 2-year suspension in 1990 from Fay Vincent for employing honorable gambler/snitch Howard Spira in a vain attempt to accrue unsavory information on future Hall-of-Famer and noteworthy Steinbrenner free-agent signee Dave Winfield. A “Seinfeld” caricature, Miller Lite pitchman and presiding “boss” of 7 world championship Yankee teams seems to mask a far more unsavory legacy. This is the story of George Steinbrenner: authoritarian, thug, bully and criminal, this week on the Bill Bradley Collective.
