Chris Bishop says we're sick of over-the-top cone use and expensive traffic management plans. And he'd be right. They are so annoying and often, to the untrained eye at least, completely pointless. They take a $100 job and make it a $1000 job. So why is this till happening? Why are there still cones everywhere, when the government says NZTA's code of practice for traffic management rick assessment - is no longer being used? Obsolete? Well, the problem is many councils are apparently still using this code of practice as their north star. As a response, the government's now threatening local council funding. They have to threaten funding to get these council to change their ways. What this shows us is just how far and deep the overly cautious, safety-at-any-cost mentality has set in. And also, it shows you how scared they are of worksafe coming in a going them if somebody gets hurt or injured. You have to make sure people are safe, especially when working with dangers. But you can't keep everybody safe from harm in all places, at all times and for any reason. Fencing every waterway is impractical. So is covering every street in road cones. We need to find a sensible middle ground and make sure the officials told to carry out the changes, actually do so.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on the Golden Age of Orthodontics, we'll explore the controversial topic of early orthodontic treatment. Dr. Daniel Grob, a board-certified orthodontist with over 40 years of experience, discusses the benefits and challenges of early intervention. He emphasizes the importance of developing facial width and addressing oral habits in young patients.Dr. Grob challenges traditional views on early treatment, arguing that cone beam X-rays have changed how orthodontists assess patients. He focuses on creating width for future development rather than just straightening teeth. Dr. Grob aims to complete phase one treatment in 15 months or less and phase two in 18 months or less. The discussion covers the prevalence of oral habits like mouth breathing and nail biting in young patients seeking early treatment. Dr. Grob shares insights on educating parents and general dentists about the signs of maxillary deficiency and the benefits of early intervention. The episode also addresses the marketing aspects of promoting early orthodontic treatment. Dr. Grob emphasizes the importance of building relationships with pediatric dentists and other specialists for referrals. The hosts discuss strategies for reaching parents directly through educational advertising. The conversation concludes with clinical advice for younger practitioners considering early treatment. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Intro: Early orthodontic treatment debate(02:28) Meet Dr. Daniel Grob(10:14) Cone beam X-rays changed approach to early treatment(14:47) Parent demand and concerns driving early ortho(16:49) Prevalence of oral habits in early treatment patients(24:42) Partnering with pediatric dentists for referrals(29:51) Evaluating transverse dimension and expansion needs(33:37) Compliance with Invisalign for young children(34:59) Resources to learn more about pediatric orthodontics(37:51) Closing thoughts and call for listener feedbackKEY TAKEAWAYS: Early orthodontic treatment is about more than just straightening teeth. Dr. Grob's focus is on developing facial width and balance, which can lead to better long-term outcomes. Using cone beam imaging has revolutionized how he approaches early treatment by allowing him to assess the transverse dimension more accurately.Oral habits play a significant role in malocclusions. Nearly half of the patients Dr. Grob sees for early treatment have some type of habit like mouth breathing or nail biting that impacts their dental development. Identifying and addressing these habits is crucial for successful early intervention.Partnering with pediatric dentists and educating parents about the benefits of early treatment has been key to Dr. Grob's practice's success. By starting treatment between ages 6-9 when appropriate, we can often help avoid more complex interventions later on and simplify the overall orthodontic process for many patients.RESOURCE LINKSPeople + Practice - Website Leon - EmailAmy - EmailPeople + Practice - EmailThe Pediatric Orthodontist Facebook GroupKEYWORDS: orthodontics, golden age of orthodontics, early orthodontic treatment, pediatric orthodontics, transverse dimension, oral habits, cone beam x-rays, phase one treatment, facial balance, orthodontic practice growth, non-extraction orthodontics, orthodontic marketing, pediatric...

There's more to that scoop of ice cream on a cone or in a dish. Aubrey Schlimgen finds out about the secret ingredient one Wisconsin ice cream maker uses to woo consumers into their next flavor. She talks with Ken Norton, Director of Retail Operations-Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Co. in Madison. The company started in 1962 started as a chocolate shop with ice cream, then shifted to just ice cream. Today he says they serve all over the US. This year to celebrate national Ice cream day July 20th, Norton says they'll hold their 2nd annual Cone Crawl where people can go to all locations and earn prizes and try new flavors. Severe weather is in the forecast for Wisconsin today. Stu Muck breaks out the hourly movement of this storm and the weather that's behind it. Volume has escalated for the Steffes Group auction crew. Ashley Huhn tells Pam Jahnke that it's not unusual to see big ticket items like combines come onto the market before the fall harvest begins. He also notes that this is traditionally the time of year when you'll find some of the best buys for equipment. Paid for by Steffes Group. This adverse weather is something that county fair organizers can't change. What they can do is try and find a little protection from the storm - literally. Stephanie Hoff talks to Robert Holmes, president of Spectrum Weather and Specialty Insurance. He focuses on creating packages that help fairs protect themselves from huge financial losses when weather events cancel things like truck and tractor pulls, as well as concerts. Big ticket investments that can cost fairs thousands.Dr. Amy Radunz just returned from the annual summer conference for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association in California. Radunz has been named the Region 7 representative on the federation of state beef councils. Cardrona Alpine Resort has officially launched their highly-anticipated Soho Basin - expanding to become New Zealand's largest commercial ski area. The expansion was part of a long-term investment program by RealNZ, Cardrona's parent company, and it increases the area's total footprint to 615 hectares. Cardrona and Treble Cone Chief Mountain Officer Laura Hedley says as soon as the conditions are right, they'll be opening the area up for skiing. "There's 150 hectares of terrain in there, which is huge. It's new terrain, no one's been in there...we were really conscious when we did the terrain trail development so that we could keep it as natural as possible." Nicole O'Byrne speaks with Eric Andrew-Gee about his book, The Mind Mappers. This powerful dual biography tells the true story of two neurosurgeons—Wilder Penfield and the lesser-known William Cone—whose partnership revolutionized brain science in the early 20th century. In the 1920s, when brain surgery was still highly risky, the two men joined forces, united by a fascination with the mind's inner workings. Together, they founded the Montreal Neurological Institute, which quickly became a world-renowned center for neurological research. Penfield gained fame for developing the Montreal procedure to treat epilepsy, a breakthrough that revealed key brain functions related to speech, memory, and consciousness. Cone, meanwhile, worked tirelessly in the operating room and at patients' bedsides, quietly enabling Penfield's success. Though their achievements were shared, Cone's contributions went largely unrecognized. Over time, the strain between them grew. Penfield pursued scientific glory, while Cone remained grounded in patient care. Their friendship deteriorated, ending abruptly with Cone's sudden death at age sixty-two. Eric Andrew-Gee explores the founding of The Neuro and the complex bond between two men at the heart of modern neuroscience. The book restores Cone to his rightful place in history, illuminating the human cost of scientific progress. Eric Andrew-Gee is the Quebec correspondent for The Globe and Mail, based in Montreal, and a former staff reporter for the Toronto Star. He is the winner of two National Newspaper Awards. His work has appeared in magazines including The Walrus, Toronto Life and The New Republic. This is his first book. Read OnlineWhen it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. John 21:4–6Recall the first time there was a miraculous catch of fish in the Gospels. In Luke 5:1–7, Jesus was preaching to the people on the shore from where He sat in Peter's boat just a short distance away. After preaching, Jesus told Peter, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Peter did so and there was such a large catch of fish that the Apostles needed help to haul it in.In today's Gospel, some three years later after the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples from the shore and instructed them to cast their nets “over the right side of the boat.” They did so and caught 153 large fish. In commenting on these two passages, Saint Augustine teaches that the first miraculous catch was a sign that the Gospel would be preached to all people, which is indicated by Jesus simply saying “lower your nets.” But after the Resurrection, Jesus specifically tells the disciples to cast their nets “over the right side” to indicate that grace is now given to those who stand on His right side and are separated from the condemned who are on His left. Thus, this second miraculous catch symbolizes the end of the age when the good and the bad are judged. Saint Augustine also notes that the 153 large fish, caught off the right side of the boat, are a symbolic representation of those who conform not only to the Ten Commandments but also receive the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit by grace. He explains that 10 + 7 = 17 and if you add all the numbers together between 1 and 17 you arrive at 153. Thus, these 153 fish represent everyone who receives His gift of grace and obtains salvation. The boat represents the Church, and the gift of salvation is offered by Christ through His Church. One clear message we must take from Saint Augustine's interpretation is that grace and mercy are offered to all, but not received by all. At the end of our lives and at the end of the world, judgment will take place. Those who responded to the offer of grace and mercy, repented of their sins and gave their lives to Christ will eternally share in the Resurrection. But those who refused to follow His Commandments and closed themselves to the transforming power of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit will be separated from eternal joys.Facing the reality of hell is not pleasant, but it is a message that must not be ignored. It is a message that is real and, therefore, hell is a possibility for us all. Therefore, it is important to remind ourselves from time to time of this spiritual truth. Are you among those 153 large fish found on the right side of the boat? Do you allow the ministers of Christ within the Church, represented by the disciples in the boat, to draw you to Christ through preaching and the Sacraments? Though all of us might quickly answer “Yes” to that question, we should never fail to be attentive to the fact that salvation requires action on our part. It requires that we accept Christ Jesus by following His Commandments and live by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit as it is dispensed by the Church.Reflect, today, upon the symbolism found in this Resurrection account. Consider the fact that the Gospel has, indeed, been shared with you. Have you listened to the Word of God as it is preached by the Church? Do you immerse yourself in the grace given through the Sacraments? Do you follow the Ten Commandments faithfully? Do you continually open yourself to the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit? Seek to be among that catch of fish caught on the “right side.” Never doubt that hell is real and possible. For that reason, never waver from your fidelity to Christ, so that you will remain firmly grounded in His grace and share one day in His Resurrection. My resurrected Lord, You have offered Your grace and mercy to all, but not all have responded. I pray that I will always be among those who continually respond to Your invitation. I repent of my sin, dear Lord. Please help me to stay faithful to Your commands of love and to be daily immersed in Your transforming Spirit. Jesus, I trust in You.Image via Adobe Stock Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.
