What does this mean for the organization moving forward? How will this shake up the NL Central? Will the rest of the Cubs coaching staff be affected by the change? The Texas Rangers stumbled into the playoffs, injured and held together with string and wire. And because baseball is insane, they are putting on one of the greatest displays of October dominance in baseball history. Jordan Montgomery and company won Game 1 of the ALCS over Justin Verlander and the Astros. And now Bruce Bochy has Texas 3 games away from the pennant. Meanwhile the NLCS starts on Monday. I wonder what Joe Girardi and Madison Bumgarner are thinking about while this series is on. And the legacy Red Oldham lives on in the form of unlikely postseason heroes. The Los Angeles Angels announced Monday that they will not be exercising Phil Nevin's option for the 2024 season, effectively ending his tenure as the Angels' manager. After an unsuccessful season at the helm on a 1-year deal, it seemed inevitable that Nevin would not return, but it was made official. So, what are our initial reactions to the news? We'll break down Phil's time as manager, what we liked, what we didn't, and discuss if he should be blamed for how the season transpired in segment 1! Then, what candidates could potentially replace Phil Nevin as the Halos' manager in 2024? With names of experienced managers like Buck Showalter, Gabe Kapler, and Joe Girardi to secondary coaches around the league like Walt Weiss and Ron Washington, Perry Minasian will have the chance to select a manager he gets to choose, which is a good step for the organization. We'll discuss potential candidates and whether an experienced manager or a homegrown talent would be the best course of action in segment 2! Plus, how does this news affect Shohei Ohtani potentially returning to the Angels? It will be the 5th Angels' manager in 7 years and Ohtani's 5th as well, and is it better that Perry is staying in the long run for the Angels to make a play for Shohei Ohtani? In the third hour, Mike Mulligan and David Haugh were joined by Marquee Sports Network analyst Joe Girardi to discuss the Cubs' 6-5 loss to the Braves in 10 innings Wednesday. Recapping a wild week of White Sox drama. Tim Anderson fight. Yasmani Grandal alleged fight. Rick Hahn is petty and complaining about fans. No Sox Fest again? Pedro Grifol's culture. The guys then listened to Marquee Sports Network analyst Joe Girardi explain why he doesn't see the Cubs as sellers at Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline. Later, Bernstein and Holmes revisited the moment Wednesday when Cubs catcher Tucker Barnhart tried to make White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn angry by jokingly showing bunt in the crosstown matchup between the two teams.

Bernstein and Rahimi then discussed the Cardinals' release of veteran receiver DeAndre Hopkins and the Bears fandom of former Cubs catcher Joe Girardi and Royals second baseman and Chicago native Michael Massey.
The Athletic's Jon Greenberg is back again and there's plenty to discuss. Did new Bears president Kevin Warren really botch the Big Ten's TV contracts or is it just impossible to try to work for 14 university presidents at the wrong time? And what does it mean when a guy would voluntarily decide he wants to work for the McCaskeys? Are the Bears as good as the NFL is counting on them to be given the TV schedule they gave them? Why did George vote against allowing Amazon to flex Thursday Night Football games, and why wasn't he savvy enough to trade what could have been the pivotal vote for something he (not we) really wants? What does Otis Spunkmeyer have to do with the Soldier(s) Field press box? And why do the Bears insist on making it so weird with the media all the time? And there's an impeccable Mike North impression. Then, there's a 27 second in-depth discussion of the White Sox before a much longer chat about the Cubs. What would it take for David Ross to ever actually be on the "hot seat?" Why are games on Marquee even weirder than normal this season, even if you (like we) kind of like the occasional Joe Girardi third man in stuff? Is there any good reason to ever have a dugout reporter? Why is Boog talking so much? And has anybody ever seen the postgame show? Then they talk about what it would take for the Cubs to actually be a seller at the trade deadline. All that, and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message

EPISODE 164: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) Actually I have answers to this. Conflicting reports that the Manhattan District Attorney's Grand Jury looking into the Stormy Daniels payoff will be off until tomorrow - or next week. Either way, this likely has less to do with Trump or Pecker or Trump's Pecker, and more to do with the fact that the jurors have actual lives. There is good news from Special Counsel Jack Smith's Grand Jury in Washington: Mike Pence must testify after all (with limited exclusions). But does anybody remember that there's a THIRD Grand Jury out there? Anyone? Bueller? B-Block (14:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Marjorie Barney Rubble Greene can't understand why Twitter suspended her just because she spat on the dead of Nashville by calling the shooting "the threat of Antifa driven trans-terrorism; and Dominion Voting System has just a few names on its witness list include multiple anchors and multiple Murdochs. (17:28) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Senator Tommy Tuberville is holding up military promotions cuz abortion and the top two REPUBLICANS on the Armed Services Committee are mad as hell about it. The head of the Chicago police union, who has been suspended for misconduct eight different times, threatens voters with "blood in the streets" if they vote for the black guy for Mayor; and Congressman Byron Donalds condescendingly dismisses the possible ban of the AR-15 Death Machine and the children it murdered as "politics." C-Block (24:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: As Baseball's Opening Day looms, time to go back to a simpler, gentler era when a big league manager could lock his entire team in the trainers' room so that there wouldn't be a soul in the clubhouse and that would teach the obnoxious young anchor of SportsCenter a lesson. The Astros are in the driver's seat, with the series heading back to Houston for game six and game seven Saturday and Sunday. Mike and Jack discuss the Phillies' remarkable run and the impact manager Rob Thomson has had on his club since taking over for Joe Girardi midway through the season. They also discuss the Astros' pitching depth and outstanding ability to draft and develop talent. What changes might Jack and Mike make to the postseason in the future? Should Major League Baseball do away with the 2-3-2 playoff format? Should the American League and National League Division Series be a best-of-seven series, instead of a best-of-five, moving forward? Mike and Jack break down the World Series and preview the season's final two games of baseball. Earlier this week, the Chicago White Sox named Kansas City Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol their new manager. Mike and Jack assess the hire, and discuss plenty of other baseball topics along the way!

It's the halfway point of the MLB season! National League storylines coming right up! The New York Mets are the talk of the town. What they've been able to do without Scherzer and degrom has been amazing. (2:25) Do you all remember the lockout? The one where some media members (cough cough) made every fan lose their mind. Remember when we here at NPDS told you not to be worried. Yea. That happened. (8:10) The Washington Nationals are bad. Very bad. The team is for sale. What will happen with Juan Soto? Will he stay or will he go? (10:20) Losing 100 games stinks. It does. But let's focus on some of the bigger stories! (16:20) Joe Girardi was fired and the Phillies win. It happened. We knew it would. Didn't think the Phillies would go a run like they did but here they are. (23:50) What's happening out west? The Dodgers trying to hold of the Padres. Will Tatis Jr come back? Will he be healthy? Can they catch the Dodgers? (25:35) What are my updated NL postseason predictions? I'm about to go on a detour so bad that you're going to end up in a different country with me. Today's word of the day is ‘Bruce!” as in Bruce Springsteen as in Coldplay as in last night I went to a concert and Bruce showed up! Couldn't believe it! (14:35) Welp, Joe Girardi got fired. It happened. I thought the Phillies would wait until after the season, but it happened. The Phillies were a dumpster fire. There was too much money spent in payroll for the Phillies to be as bad as they are. Giardi was in his 3rd year with the team and it just didn't work out. We all knew this was going to be the case and the players couldn't take it anymore. (24:45) The Los Angeles Angels stink. They are bad. 11 straight losses. Mike Trout can't hit. The bullpen can't get outs. They went from 1 game back all the way to 8.5 games back in 2 weeks. Ohtani can't hit. He's been average pitching. Can they turn it around? (29:35) Review: Poisoned - America's Fentanyl Problem. (36:40) What is going on in Tampa? The Rays hosted a PRIDE night and it didn't go as planned (or maybe it did). Some players on the team refused to wear the rainbow logo to for PRIDE night. Manager Kevin Cash spoke with he media to address what happened. So did pitcher Jason Adam. And that's when things took a turn. (47:45) NPPOD. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today's word of the day is ‘consistency' as in it's Memorial Day as in Gabe Kapler put a pause on his protest to come out for the National Anthem just for this holiday.
