Welcome back to The Great Unfamous -- we've been on hiatus for the last year, but we're back in 2025, and we fire it back up with a guest I've tried to land for almost three years. Mark Williams taught me lessons about the breathtaking beauty of Durango, Colorado, how to fly fish and how you take on David-and-Goliath battles and win. Mark's a world-renowned fly fishing expert, author of more than 20 books, a sports writer, an award-winning alternative school teacher, a cancer survivor, a public speaker, an entrepreneur and more.  But his best skill is his ability to storytell -- with a razor sharp wit and silver-tongue Texas drawl, he gets away with a lot because he's a cross between Odysseus and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Meet the man with a knack for tricking people into believing in themselves and learn how he acquired this talent on this episode of The Great Unfamous. MARK WILLIAMS BIO Mark D. Williams is an educator, consultant, speaker and author. Williams has fished all over the world and is the author of the popular fishing/travel book, So Many Fish, So Little Time: 1001 of the World's Greatest Backcountry Honeyholes, Trout Rivers, Blue Ribbon Waters, Bass Lakes, and Saltwater Hot Spots from Harper Collins. Williams has written 22 books and most recently, co-wrote two books with wife Amy Becker Williams: Weather Disasters (Skyhorse Pub.) and 50 Top Things to Do in the Enchanted Circle Northern New Mexico (West Winds Press.) Williams writes about travel, sports, outdoors, backpacking, camping, weather, gig businesses and more. Williams recently completed his first crime-mystery novel, The Hollow Men, first of the Guy Harwin series (Longmire meets True Detective/Seven.) He is currently finishing the second novel in the series, Purgatory. He has two other novels ready for review: The Bedside Diaries, and The Bomba Shack. He has two western novels in a series but only discovered this past year that nobody is buying westerns anymore. Williams has written hundreds of articles for numerous national magazines and newspapers including Dallas Morning News, SPORT Magazine, ESPN, ESPNoutdoors.com, Texas Sporting Journal, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Baseball Digest, Texas Rangers' Program, Beckett, Cowboys and Indians, Southwest Fly Fishing, Texas Sportsman, Texas Outdoors, Texas Fish and Game, Backpacker, Men's Health, Men's Journal, Flyfishing and Flytying Journal, Bass Pro Shop, Orvis News, Rocky Mountain Game and Fish and more. He is the author of two apps: Freshwater Flyfishing Tips from the Pros, and Sports Most Memorable Sound Bites (both Sutro Media.) Williams has written: Freshwater Flyfishing Tips from the Pros, Fireside / Simon & Schuster; Trout Fishing Sourcebook, Menasha Ridge Press; The Backpacking Angler, Menasha Ridge Press; Flyfishing Southwestern Colorado, Wayfinder Press; Knots for Flyfishers, Menasha Ridge Press, Colorado Fly Fishing: Where to Eat, Sleep and Fish (Johnson Books) and The Bedside Diaries (Kindle) and with Stonefly Press, Learning to Fly Fish for Trout, and 49 Trout Streams Southern Colorado, University of New Mexico Press, to name a few. Owns several businesses including antiques, and online bookstores. Williams was an award-winning teacher at North Heights Alternative School in Amarillo, Texas. Williams taught Social Studies and Multimedia, grades 9-12. Williams began teaching at age 40 after a career as a sportswriter and business owner. In 2013, Williams was runner-up finalist for the Brock International Prize in Education. His students produced award-winning documentaries, PSAs, books, articles, magazines, songs and albums, commercials, student-run bookstores, coffee-shops, other businesses and more. In 2013, he successfully guided the 1st high school in America to create a professional app for iTunes and Android. When Rick Cerrone, the revered editor-in-chief of Baseball Digest, joins us for another Episode, he brings more than just stats and stories; he brings the heartbeat of baseball history to our show. As we light our Rocky Patel cigars and settle into our chairs, Rick transports us from the Pittsburgh Pirates' PR office to the inner sanctum of the New York Yankees under George Steinbrenner. His tales of innovation, like initiating Pirate Fest, and the nostalgia of Turn Back the Clock Day, remind us that baseball is a tapestry of tradition and transformation. Ever wondered what it would be like to witness Barry Bonds toss his glove onto the field in true 1939 fashion, or to overhear a heated exchange between Bonds and Jim Leyland during spring training? Rick Serone shares these moments with the vividness of a seasoned storyteller, offering a glimpse into the personalities and tensions that shaped an era. He also peels back the curtain on the life of a baseball PR director, from handling managerial fireworks to navigating the complexities of media relations—all while keeping the game's legacy alive. But it's not all fastballs and field drama; Rick recounts a heartwarming story of Oscar-winning actress Teresa Wright, whose love for baseball was sparked by a simple first pitch at a Yankees game. Her journey from silver screen to diamond enthusiast, culminating in a cherished encounter with Derek Jeter, is a poignant reminder that baseball is more than a sport—it's a series of human stories, each with the power to inspire and connect. Former Major League Pitcher Ken Brett is quoted as saying, "The worst curse in life is unlimited potential." After the rise to stardom of New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle, the expectations that come with being "the next" are high, and in some cases, crushing.  Barry Sparks joins Lawrence Knorr to talk baseball, and share stories of players who were touted as that guy in "Finding the Next Mickey Mantle." Among these chronicled by Sparks are some familiar names. We hear the stories of Bill Robinson, Clint Hurdle and Tom Tresh, and how and why they fared as they did. Some, like Joe Pepitone were considered to have burned up their best years and potential, while others, such as Ruben Rivera never quite panned out to their (at times unfair) top billing. We also hear why Sparks considers Mike Trout to be one of the best players of his generation, and how Bryce Harper handles these pressures better than most. Sparks has written about baseball for more than 50 years. His first article appears in the July 1970 Baseball Digest. His work has appeared in more than 70 national and regional publications, including National Pastime, Sports Parade and Sports Collectors Digest. He is also the author of a biography of Frank "Home Run" Baker, and is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. He lives in York, Pennsylvania.

 — Baseball Digest gave legend Willie Mays its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday. The Hall of Fame center fielder was honored Thursday with a new accolade to be given annually recognizing a living individual who has made “significant contributions to the national game.”Mays, who turns 90 on May 6, was chosen over five other finalists in voting by a panel of longtime baseball writers, broadcasters, historians and executives. The Say Hey Kid appears on the cover of Baseball Digest for the fourth time. “I never worried about personal awards. I worried about winning,” Mays said in a news release. “But to be honored with this Lifetime Achievement Award, that’s a great honor, especially with all the other great names (considered). All deserving. It’s a sports award, it’s a baseball award, but it’s much more. It’s about all the things you do. For me, it’s about helping kids and making sure they’re taken care of because so many people took care of me in my life. Mays made 24 All-Star teams and won two NL MVP awards and 12 Gold Gloves during his dazzling career from 1951-73. He moved with the Giants from New York to San Francisco, then finished up with two seasons back in the Big Apple playing for the Mets. He ranks sixth on the career chart with 660 home runs. Also selected as finalists were Hank Aaron, Roland Hemond, Rachel Robinson, Vin Scully and Joe Torre. “Baseball Digest was honored to cover and celebrate Willie Mays for the duration of his incredible career and we are equally honored to celebrate an entire lifetime of contributions to baseball,” said Norman Jacobs, publisher since 1969. “Just as he thrilled us during a Hall of Fame playing career that spanned four decades, Willie has exemplified the best qualities of our game and our country in the nearly 50 years since his retirement.” *Trust*In*GOD*
