Today we bring you the latest installment in our ‘Women in Leadership' series of the ESG Insider podcast, featuring interviews with women CEOs and leaders from around the world. In this episode, we talk with Bonnie Lee, President and CEO of Hanmi Financial Corporation and Hanmi Bank, a Los Angeles-based community bank established in 1982 to serve the Korean American immigrant community and now serving multi-ethnic communities through its network of branches and loan production offices. Bonnie tells us how her interest in banking began when she watched her parents apply for a small business loan, and how she has learned from the successes and mistakes of a dozen different CEOs she has worked under during her career. She says empathy plays an important role in her leadership style — because ultimately, "banking is really a people business." Bonnie also explains Hanmi's approach to diversity, and how the bank's workforce mirrors the diversity of the markets where it operates. "Throughout the 42-year history, the culture and our platform has [been] built to represent the market that we serve," she says. Fluent Fiction - Korean: Kimchi Artwear: Fashion Inspired by Food Find the full episode transcript, vocabulary words, and more:fluentfiction.org/kimchi-artwear-fashion-inspired-by-food Story Transcript:Ko: En: A unique story began in the heart of Seoul. In front of the bustling Gangnam Station exit 9, a young woman named Ji-hye sat in a BBQ restaurant called "Happiness of Meat," sipping her coffee and staring at the kimchi stains on her shirt. En: Ji-hye examined the small, tangled, red waves on her shirt closely, admiring their peculiar beauty. The unique shade of red captivated her heart, sparking a sudden idea in her mind. En: Reaching for her phone, she took a picture. It was the exact moment that the idea for "Kimchi Artwear" - inspired by food for the first time - was born. En: From that day on, Ji-hye began to explore new possibilities for fashion using Seoul's spicy kimchi, sweet rice cakes, and savory sauces. She created her own distinctive items based on this concept, and people were enchanted by her creativity. En: Every day was a sequence of challenges and discoveries for Ji-hye. She infused the freshness of bean sprouts from Hanmi-ro into delicate cotton fabrics and crafted vibrant blouses adorned with ribbon details, inspired by Mapo SoGalbi Restaurant. En: However, success can bring forth unexpected consequences if not managed properly. Ji-hye realized that she had lost herself in the fickle winds of fashion. She couldn't find inspiration from the food she genuinely loved for a long time. As a result, she temporarily distanced herself from the fashion industry and decided to revisit her childhood memories by cooking kimchi stew. En: And then she realized. The satisfaction she derived from Korean cuisine resonated more deeply in her heart than any new fabric or design that emerged in the market. This realization taught Ji-hye that the clothes she created shouldn't merely be "clothes," but rather a medium for expressing her life, love, and interests. En: From that day forward, Ji-hye humbly but skillfully expressed her fashion inspired by food. Her garments became not only trendy but beautiful artwear that conveyed her deep love for her own cuisine. En: Thus, Ji-hye spread her unique and talented fashion ideas beyond Seoul, reaching people all around the world. With that, she transitioned from the woman with kimchi-stained shirts to a respected designer in the fashion industry. Throughout this journey, she learned how to maintain her passion and never lose sight of her true self. And this became the story of Ji-hye, showcasing the infinite possibilities of "loving and respecting one's own life" to everyone who wore her clothes.
