In this week's inspiring episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, we sit down with Larry Jarah Sims—an award-winning Celebrity Hair Architect, entrepreneur, and Co-Founder of Flawless by Gabrielle Union. With over 20 years in the industry, Larry has styled the most iconic looks in pop culture for Janet Jackson, Zendaya, Gabrielle Union, Regina King, Mary J. Blige, and so many more. But behind the glam is a story of hard work, resilience, creativity, and reinvention. We dive deep into:His early days as a beginner stylistWhat it really takes to get celebrity clients (and keep them)Breaking through industry gatekeepingCreating a beauty brand from the ground upAnd how trauma, truth, and triumph shaped his pathThis episode is packed with career advice, real talk, and gems for aspiring stylists, beauty entrepreneurs, and creatives looking to leave a legacy.
This week features a guest as we dive into queer identity, layers of privilege, and why everyone still gets mad when a woman raises her voice. From La Vie en Grindr to Gabrielle Union's fiery acceptance speech, let's TALK ABOUT IT!
Hey friends, it's Carla—and this week's episode of So What Now was a whole mix of “wait, what?” and “absolutely not.” We kicked things off with Ayesha Howard, who recently responded to the backlash around her decision to keep her baby. And listen… her response didn't move me. At all. I said what I said, and I still feel the same way. Then we got into this Florida city trying to roll out a 4-day school week, which sounds cool until you realize... parents still work 5. So who's watching the kids on that fifth day? Make it make sense. Policies like this just make parenting even harder, and we had a lot to say about it. Of course, we couldn't resist a little detour into celebrity mess—this time it's the Beckhams. Apparently the two brothers aren't speaking because the younger one is now dating his big brother's ex. Yes, you read that right. We unpacked that drama and asked the real question: Is it ever okay to date your sibling's ex? (Spoiler: I have strong opinions) And then we got a little deeper. Gabrielle Union recently walked back her old stance on 50/50 relationships, saying it came from a place of trauma. That opened the door for us to dig into the 4 trauma response types—Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn. Which one are you? Are you a mix? Dex and I broke it all down and, let's just say, we learned a lot about ourselves in the process. As always, thanks for showing up, listening, and being part of this wild little podcast of ours. We're grateful for y'all every week.– Carla CONNECT WITH US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: CARLA WILMARIS | DEX

It's a fun episode of BEHIND THE LENS as writer/director TIFFANY KIM STEVENS joins me in discussing her new quirky comedy TRIGGER HAPPY, plus my exclusive interview with director DITO MONTIEL talking about his latest dysfunctional family comedy RIFF RAFF. First up is my exclusive interview with director DITO MONTIEL talking the brilliantly conceived RIFF RAFF. Boasting an A-list cast led by Jennifer Coolidge and Ed Harris, along with Gabrielle Union, Lewis Pullman, Miles J. Harvey, with Pete Davidson and Bill Murray, RIFF RAFF is laugh-out-loud chaos with a wife, an ex-wife, a disowned son with a pregnant girlfriend, an innocent teen on the cusp of college, and a couple of gangsters named Leftie and Lonnie coming for them all. Needless to say, Leftie and Lonnie are played by Murray and Davidson, respectively. Listen as we break down the film and Dito's creative process covering everything from casting and character development to storyboards to cinematography to editing, as well as the film's kinetic energy and strong ensemble performances. Then I'm joined by writer/director TIFFANY KIM STEVENS talking about her outrageously fun and quirky comedic TRIGGER HAPPY; the tale of poor George Decker who dreams of escaping his boring and humdrum life and escaping to the Bahamas. But to do so means getting rid of his wife, crushing debt, his 9-to-6 job, and everything else that he believes has held him back and prevented his true bliss. A clever story that melds decades to create a timeless feel, Tiffany and I discuss character, story, production design, color palette, editing, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This is the story of Monica and Quincy who both grow up next door to each other in Southern California, apparently enamored of two things: the game of basketball and each other. And as they grow up, they both develop into excellent basketball players and we also watch as their relationship develops. Omar Epps (Higher Learning, Juice) eventually plays Quincy who is the son of a retired pro basketball player (Dennis Heysbert) and has aspirations of following in his father's footsteps. And Sanaa Lathan (Brown Sugar, Alien Vs. Predator) eventually plays Monica who is trying to develop into a pro basketball player despite her mother's (Alfre Woodard) concerns about there being no future in it. What results is both a love story and sports drama which spans over fifteen years and has built quite up a devoted following since it was first released in the Spring of 2000 to solid reviews and box office. What better time to review this beloved basketball drama directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) than JUST in time for March Madness? :) Send us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Hill's 20-plus year journalism career has included stops at the biggest sports media network and several reputable newspapers. She originally joined ESPN in 2006 as a national columnist for espn.com. Her profile gradually rose as she began to make appearances on television, including SportsCenter, First Take, Around the Horn, The Sports Reporters and Outside the Lines. She also spent a season as a sideline reporter for ESPN college football games. Her foray into daily television began in 2013, when her and co-host Michael Smith began the daily, sports discussion show, His & Hers, which sprang from their popular podcast of the same name. In February 2017, Hill and Smith co-anchored the 6 p.m., SportsCenter, which debuted as a more personality-driven approach to the traditional SportsCenter. After her stint as SportsCenter host, Hill was a senior columnist for The Undefeated, ESPN's sub-site that focuses on the intersection of sports, race, culture and politics. In addition to breaking ground as a podcaster, Hill continued her celebrated television broadcasting career. In 2020, Hill and her longtime friend, former ESPN anchor Cari Champion, launched a weekly, late-night show on Vice Network called Cari & Jemele: Won't Stick to Sports. The show covered politics, sports, news, current events, and pop culture. Hill is also stretching her muscles behind the camera. She is executive producer of former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick's documentary, which will air on ESPN and is directed by legendary filmmaker Spike Lee. She also is currently developing a comedy series with acclaimed actress Gabrielle Union.Uphill: A Memoirhttps://a.co/d/7qhPXO3One of Oprah Daily's Best Fall Nonfiction Books of 2022An empowering, unabashedly bold memoir by the Atlantic journalist and former ESPN SportsCenter coanchor about overcoming a legacy of pain and forging a new path, no matter how uphill life's battles might be.Jemele Hill's world came crashing down when she called President Trump a “white supremacist”; the White House wanted her fired from ESPN, and she was deluged with death threats. But Hill had faced tougher adversaries growing up in Detroit than a tweeting president. Beneath the exterior of one of the most recognizable journalists in America was a need―a calling―to break her family's cycle of intergenerational trauma.Born in the middle of a lively routine Friday night Monopoly game to a teen mother and a heroin-addicted father, Hill constantly adjusted to the harsh realities of not only her own childhood but the inherited generational pain of her mother and grandmother. Her escape was writing.Hill's mother was less than impressed with the brassy and bold free expression of her diary, but Hill never stopped discovering and amplifying her voice. Through hard work and a constant willingness to learn, Hill rose from newspaper reporter to columnist to new heights as the coanchor for ESPN's revered SportsCenter. Soon, she earned respect and support for her fearless opinions and unshakable confidence, as well as a reputation as a trusted journalist who speaks her mind with truth and conviction. In Jemele Hill's journey Uphill, she shares the whole story of her work, the women of her family, and her complicated relationship with God in an unapologetic, character-rich, and eloquent memoir.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.
