So many people believe that the Ten Commandments are an important part of life, but so few of them can tell you what they are. There are a lot of reasons for that, including the fact that there aren't ten commandments and the fact that different faith groups read the same scriptures and separate them in different ways, leading to disputes about which one is more important or whether some parts are one command or many. And when we strive to make a certain set in a certain order be the one that we want to go with, we are faced with the reality that the Bible lists them twice and the two don't match. Different order, different wording - does that change what they mean? We're going to spend the next weeks breaking down and understanding these commands which have molded a significant part of our world for thousands of years. We'll start with the first commandment - as soon as we figure out what it is...

Well somebody has to have it....On this episode we dive head first into a fascinating 15 part doc series all the episodes which are now available on Substack. It's "First Word on Horror'.First Word on Horror is a fifteen-part documentary series that profiles five of the finest horror writers working today. Across multiple episodes, each author discusses their life, their inspirations, their philosophies, and their writing techniques while reading one of their short stories. As fact and fiction blend, secrets are revealed and the delicate alchemy that turns human experience into creative expression begins to emerge. The series is a love letter to writers of all ilk, to the primacy of the human experience, and to the simple act of reading a damned good story. The authors profiled are New York Times bestsellers, multi-award winners, and cult favorites. In this first season, they are Stephen Graham Jones, Paul Tremblay, Elizabeth Hand, Laird Barron, and Mariana Enriquez. Through the authors' lives the series takes viewers from a harrowing Iditarod dogsled race in Alaska to the lurking terror of growing up under the Argentinian dictatorship; from the unbridled energy of the early DC punk scene to an ill-fated hunting expedition on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana. We talked with director and creator of the series Philip Gelatt about the genesis of this project and so very much more...

Many people assume that when we preach the gospel, the first thing we should tell people is that God loves them. But New Testament preachers like Jesus and His apostles actually did something very different: They first told people about their need for repentance. Welcome to another episode of the Following Films Podcast! In this episode, I sit down with the incredible Stephen Graham Jones, celebrated author, and horror mastermind, to discuss his recent participation in the documentary series First Word on Horror. We'll unpack his unique perspective on the genre, I ask highly specific questions about The Only Good Indians, and we chat about Wes Craven's iconic Scream, a film that redefined the slasher genre—along with some fun tangents, including my (possibly) miscredited nod to the house from Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Is that Mike Deluccas's house? So sit back, relax, and join us for a conversation full of surprises, insights, and, of course, a little horror. For more information on First Word on Horror, visit https://etchstudio.substack.com/
