Greetings Dead Freaks! The last episode of 2022 is here with a variety of new (and old) music recommendations coming straight from my playlists to your earholes. Its definitely been a year over here at Shrunken Road Studios and I thank you for sticking with me through it all. In addition to the recommendations, I'm taking one last chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1972 shows with a healthy mix that gets good and weird. Please check out these fine releases as heard in the episode:Phil Cook "From The Kitchen" is a terrific 2xLP live album available from Warhen Records. Cook and company create a charming blend of blues, soul, and gospel that touches the heart and lifts the spirit. I had the pleasure of talking to him for episode 21(!) and continue to love his work. Grip your copy today via the Warhen Record Bandcamp.Sunburned Hand of the Man is a psychedelic/experimental music collective that has had many members, many forms, and many sounds over the years but they have consistently made great, weird, music for decades. The recent reissue of "Headdress" from Three Lobed Recordings throws back hard to the sound of the band 20 years ago but it could well have been recorded last week. Or next. Grip that here. Or go to the Sunburned Bandcamp page and check out "Archive Dive" which contains the fuller excerpt of the excerpt played on the show as well as a few other live cuts which, you'll find, are not the same as what I presented. That's who these guys are; an ungoverned morass of sound and spirit. Ride along or get off the bus. Get Archive Dive or, even better, their entire digital discography for the cost of an album at subunrnedhandoftheman.bandcamp.com.Spiral Joy Band is a long running group leaning here with their traditional instruments into the outer realms. Making spiritual, meditational, music with traditional instruments is not new but it's a zone they homesteaded upon for some time as their existence and personnel intertwine through the years with Pelt. This latest is called "In The River" and is a bit of an homage to Paul Metzger (get to know him!) whom they had just seen perform when this was put to tape. You can grip the LP via bandcamp SpiralJoyBand.Bandcamp.com or from the label, Feeding Tube Records.Lastly but by no means least, Mike Gangloff (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers, Eight Point Star) has released a beautiful solo album; his first for some time; entitled "Evening Measures". Released by VHF Records, "Evening Measures" cleaves closer to traditional than the selections above but still leans into drone capturing a unique work of beauty. This one is out now and has done many a turn on my turntable. Get yours from VHF Records. The Brokedown Podcast is part of Osiris Media. Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #407 was recorded on a hot August afternoon at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, and features the Gaea Star Band performing original, visionary acoustic improv music with Mariam Massaro on lead vocals, native flute, dulcimer, twelve string guitar and ukulele, Robin Rooney on djimbe, percussion and vocals, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and native drums. Today we begin with the languid, prayerlike mantra “Turn The Golden Knob”, a psychedelic, evocative piece with a compelling vocal from Mariam. Next up is the gorgeous “In The River”, a bittersweet summer song with a perfect folk melody from Mariam and a metronomic and lovely piano motif from Bob. Mariam strums her open-tuned 12 string guitar for the mysterious, modal “Mist Is Rising In The Meadow”, accompanying an eldritch, ancient melody, and “Yanayo” is a drifting minor ballad led by Mariam’s ukulele featuring a wandering melody of deep mystery. Bob picks up the bass guitar for the groovy “We Are Going To Change Our World”, a driving rock groove with an assertive, inspiring vocal from Mariam, and “Ruby” is a fearie country song with a Nashville undertone and a whimsical lyric from Mariam. Today’s final song is “All Life Unfolds” from the “For The Children” album, here featuring excellent flute work from Mariam and a steady, pulsing drum groove from Robin and Craig.Learn more about Mariam here: http://www.mariammassaro.com

Today on Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #402 we present an hour of improvised visionary music with the Gaea Star Band featuring Mariam Massaro on vocals, native flute, acoustic guitar and ukulele, Robin Rooney on vocals and percussion, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and native drums. Recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in July 2020, today’s show begins with the sprawling, ambitious “In The River”, an epic improvisation featuring an outstanding series of melodies by Mariam set to a shifting, imaginative musical soundscape that showcases all of the musicians in turn over it’s half hour length. The second half of the show features a lovely, deep song cycle that begins with the evocative, mesmerizing “Merrily We Sail Along”featuring a hypnotic, repeating, circular piano motif from Bob supporting a series of imaginative lyrics from Mariam. A lengthy instrumental passage yields to the shifting, alternately relaxed and driving “The Cauldron Of Life” and ultimately to the rocking, uptempo, afrocuban flavored “Never Give Up”, a song of resilience featuring lyrical native flute from Mariam and frenetic native drum figures from Craig and Robin. Madeleine Besson is a French singer, songwriter and artist. Her new EP, “In The River,” showcases her soulful and blues-flavored style and is creatively immersed with original songwriting and vocalizing. After developing her musical talents as a multi-instrumentalist while just a young child, Madeleine spent her early years touring the world on movie sets and theaters with her artistic parents. This all led up to her beautiful 2014 debut record, “Blossom” that she recorded in Europe after having developed her skills as a live performer. She shows the full range of her musical abilities with songs about departures, destinations and the lessons learned along the way.
In this pre-recorded interview, Rocky Mountain Review host Maximos Hunter sits down with musician and activist Raye Zaragoza. Hunter and Zaragoza talk about her career, which blossomed following her 2016 release, “In The River”. Zaragoza gives some advice for new touring musicians, a history of her activism protesting the Dakota Pipeline and a sneak peek […] The post RMR Exclusive Interview: Musician/Activist Raye Zaragoza appeared first on KCSU FM.

A look at AMERICA through two turntables, and THE PRESSURES OF THE WORLD that it thrusts upon us, and the inevitable CHANGE that we all hope to accelerate. I ask, "America, DO YOU LOVE ME LIKE YOU SAY, or will I be left to drown IN THE RIVER?" A NEW ORDER gave us hope eight years back that this nation and us were TWO OF HEARTS and we begged, "DON'T STOP!" Though now we've been sucked into the frighteningly strong gravitational pull of the GALAXY, fluttering our wings like a helpless CYMANDE. At times like this, we need to remind ourselves that optimism and ultimately LOVE WILL SAVE THE DAY. Only when we find this hope can we learn to FUNK again, and to let the powers that be know that, "YOU GONNA MAKE ME LOVE SOMEBODY ELSE" if they keep on treating us like they have. "DO YOU HEAR ME CALLING?" Of course not; the powers have a HEART OF GLASS and any little bit of "freedom" they give us is just an ILLUSION. As we are led on by BLIND FAITH, we find ourselves in the only safe space we have left: DEEP IN VOGUE within our own community. Which is why it is imperative that we stop in-fighting. We must rise above hatred, and all the things that separate us, to achieve freedom and equality for one and other. FOLLOW ME.
