We dive head first into CompuKids month with our first entry: the original Tron from 1982! Starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, and Cindy Morgan. Written and directed by Steve Lisberger. Find out the history of Tron before Tron Ares hits the theaters.
The music industry has been in something of a mess over the past two decades. Digital platforms have come and gone and come again, completely reshaping – and then reshaping again – the economic model of the music industry. The Christian music industry has had to undergo all these changes plus more: the rise of the worship genre, the growth of such radio juggernauts as K-Love and Salem, and the economic pressures these innovations have placed on the rest of the industry to conform or die. And the worship genre itself has shaped the way the church worships – whether we like it or not. Through all these changes, a small but influential music label in Nashville has not just survived, but it has thrived. That label is Centricity, and it owes much of its success to my guest today, John Mays. John is one of the co-founders of the label, and he has retained the title of Senior VP of A&R. And if you don't know what that means, stay tuned. John will explain. John Mays began his career as a musician, playing bass for some of the early bands in the CCM genre, first as a road dog, then as a session player. He worked for industry leader Word Records early in his career. With Word, Centricity, and others, he has been influential in the careers of artists such as Cindy Morgan, Point of Grace, Phillips, Craig & Dean, Andrew Peterson, and many more. John is currently working with Peterson, Jason Gray, and Lauren Daigle, among the two dozen or so artists currently on the Centricity label. John had this conversation with me from his home near Nashville. A special word before we go. I'm a bit of a music guy. I find music to be nourishing spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. Contemporary Christian Music and Christian radio also have an outsized impact on the evangelical movement. So from time to time, we'll feature musicians on the MinistryWatch podcast. To hear recent interviews I've done with Charlie Peacock, Fernando Ortega, Andrew Peterson, and others, just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the “Podcast” button at the top of the page. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Thanks to PR guy extraordinaire Rick Hoganson for helping me arrange this interview with John Mays. Until next time, may God bless you.
Your Stupid Minds sifts through some of Chris's $4 DVD acquisitions from Half Price Books and these things called "video stores" where our ancient ancestors used to purchase their entertainment wares. We start with the 1995 sci-fi direct-to-video low budget epic Galaxis (or Terminal Force), which some critic (we'll never know who) described as "Star Wars meets The Terminator." Starring Brigitte Nielsen, Richard Moll, Fred Asparagus (lol), Alan Fudge (lol), Sam Raimi for some reason, and professional Diablo III gold farmer Arthur Mesa. In a far off space battle that is in no way like the opening of Star Wars, Lord Tarkin (Craig Fairbrass) battles it out with evil space wizard Kyla (Moll). When Tarkin is betrayed by his sniveling wiener underling (Raimi) Kyla steals their magic crystal (which may be called Galaxis, the title is never mentioned nor explained) that gives them power or something. Ladera (Nielsen) comes upon Tarkin, who reveals to her that there is a second crystal, which she can use to defend the Sintarian people, or Kyla could use to destroy the universe or something. Unfortunately, the crystal is on Earth. Doubly unfortunately, it's now in Los Angeles (but good for the filmmakers, who already happened to be there). The film switches abruptly from a Star Wars ripoff to a Terminator ripoff, when Ladera teams up with a rogue-like drunk named Jed Sanders (John H. Brennan). They do some Terminator stuff and Kyla shoots them with force lightening. Meanwhile corpulent gangster Victor (Asparagus) chases after Jed with various Wile E. Coyote instruments of death, and two hapless detectives (Roger Aaron Brown and Cindy Morgan) traipse around 90s LA sighing and shaking their heads at all the violence.
In 1978, after Harold Ramis wrapped "Animal House", the director teamed up with pals Brian Doyle-Murray and Douglas Kenney, along with Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Ted Knight, and the one and only, Rodney Dangerfield, to bring similar frathouse shenanigans to the clubhouse. Featuring legendary performances (many of which were completely improvised) plus an equally memorable soundtrack, this 80s flick came barreling into theaters the summer of 1980, and went on to become one of the most cherished comedies of all time. Widely considered to be one of the all-time funniest comedies ever assembled, the film about a young golf caddy (Michael O'Keefe) desperate to win a scholarship and turn his life around has been listed #71 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs and #7 on AFI's Top 10 Sports Films. So grab your golf clubs, watch out for gopher holes, and remember to be the ball as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Nicolas Pepin and Chris McMichen discuss “Caddyshack” from 1980 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:Cindy Morgan revealed that the oil massage scene with Chevy Chase was entirely improvised. When Lacy exclaims, "You're crazy!" that was Morgan's authentic reaction to Chase dousing her with oil, which was also the case with Chase's reply, "That's what they said about the Son Of Sam.”Writer and producer Douglas Kenney died after the film was released. He fell off a cliff while vacationing in Hawaii. Kenney had experienced deep depression after the film's post-production, as much of the original story had been significantly altered in the editing room, and he was strongly opposed to the final addition of the gopher to the film.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/56693/15-things-you-might-not-know-about-caddyshackhttps://screenrant.com/caddyshack-movie-behind-scenes-making-of-trivia/Some sections were composed or edited by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the ground-breaking 1982 cyberpunk movie, Tron – written and directed by Steven Lisberger, starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes.A computer hacker is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program. This is one of the first cyberpunk films I remember watching as a little kid. I remember being dazzled by the otherworldly raw special effects of cyberspace, thinking about how cool it would be to be zapped into my favorite video game (I always wanted to be in Space Quest and travel the universe with Roger Wilco and the Pirates of Pestulon). Tron was one of the landmark 1982 cyberpunk films along with Blade Runner, Burst City, and Liquid Sky. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! One of Walt Disney Pictures' better forays into science fiction brings us a visually-dazzling world, but that doesn't quite make up for a story that's both nonsensical and a bit of a slog. So excited to have returning guest Kate Stanford back again to discuss the launch of her new single "Stand On Your Promises." The new single is now available on all platforms. Below is the official press release and all available links. NEWS SOURCE: Biscuit Media GroupApril 18, 2024 Nashville, TN — April 18, 2024. Kate Stanford, an emerging powerhouse in Christian music, is thrilled to announce the release of her latest single, "Stand on Your Promises." Produced by Sam Hart, known for his exceptional work with artists such as Big Daddy Weave, Meredith Andrews, Unspoken, and Sanctus Real, “Stand on Your Promises” is available tomorrow, April 19, on all major streaming platforms. "Stand on Your Promises is an anthem of hope,” explains Stanford. “What originally inspired this song was my struggle with both physical and emotional pain. I have dealt with chronic migraines for the past year and could not get out of bed. This led me to be depressed and hopeless. But even in my darkest times, Jesus met me every step of the way. He answered my prayers and brought me out of the darkness. He gave me joy and hope and provided me with community here in Nashville. I want listeners to know that whatever they may be going through, it will get better. Stand on His promises and He will make a way for you.” Following Stanford's 2023 release, "Your Heart," which was produced by two-time GRAMMY nominee Cindy Morgan, comes the latest single. Kate's unmistakable vocals and Sam Hart's unparalleled production expertise make "Stand on Your Promises" a must-listen for fans of uplifting and inspiring music. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Stanford's musical journey began at a young age, singing as both a classically trained singer and a contemporary artist. Actress Cindy Morgan died at the beginning of the year. She was "Lacy Underall" in "Caddyshack" along with many other roles. She was on with the DSC and it was a really cool interview. Here's a look back. RIP Cindy Morgan.
In 2020, less than a year after the launch of our inaugural podcast, we reached out to a number of iconic 1980s artists who would wanted to interview. And although at the time we did not have a track record of celebrity interviews, Cindy Morgan ("Caddyshack", "Tron") accepted our invitation. To our delight, she was more than just polite, she was generous, vulnerable, and honest. In our interview, we discuss the career path that landed the former radio host in "Caddyshack," a film in which she appeared opposite the biggest comedic actors of the era. Cindy also shares her experience with producer Jon Peters that derailed what seemed to be her path to stardom.Sadly, Cindy died last month at her home in Florida.Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1980snow.Become a patron at www.patreon.com/1980snowFor more episodes of 1980s Now and information about the show visit www.1980snow.comEmail us at will@1980snow.com or kat@1980snow.com.

Today is another example of why I love podcasting: it gives me opportunities to have conversations with amazing people. Then I get to share those conversations with you! In the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, I listened to a lot of contemporary Christian music, otherwise known as CCM. If you remember back in the days before streaming took over the world, we had these little things called “liner notes,” which contained the songs, lyrics, musicians, and others involved in the making of an album. One of the names I regularly saw was Jimmy Abegg, also known as Jimmy A. He was not only active as a musician on many albums, but also as a photographer who took photographs for many contemporary Christian music album covers. For those of you familiar with CCM, you might recognize Jimmy from his days as the guitar player in the Charlie Peacock trio, as well as one of the players in Rich Mullins' Ragamuffins. Today I get to bring you a conversation with Mr. Abegg, and I hope that it will inspire you as it did me! Here's a snippet of Jimmy's bio from his website: “In 1989, a career in music led me and my young family to Nashville, Tennessee. Today, we still call Nashville home and I am proud to say that the years have been generous and full. I have been given so many opportunities to provide for my family and care for others while creating things I love. Be it, playing music on the road, recording in the studio, making fine art, showing in galleries, designing record packaging, photographing musicians, writing music, or mentoring others on all of the above; my life of creativity has explored many mediums. Whether abstract or figurative, my painting continues the tendency towards curiosity, whimsy and simple beauty, with a healthy dose of train-hopping, carefree adventure.” Jimmy suffers from macular degeneration, which has taken away the majority of his sight, but he still makes art and music. Interestingly, he says that some of his favorite pieces have been created during this period of his life. In this conversation, Jimmy and I talk about songwriting, collaboration, artwork, and creative habits, among other topics. One of my favorite quotes from this conversation is when Jimmy gave advice for people trying to figure out their path in life. He said, “Try to quit what you're doing. If you can't stop, maybe you should be doing that.” I also want to give a shout-out to the kind and generous Cindy Morgan, who thoughtfully connected me with Jimmy! * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Vellum, the go-to book formatting software for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books. I speak to a wide variety of writers and creatives on the podcast, and today, I'm thrilled to bring you this conversation with one of the members of the highly successful Christian music vocal group, Point of Grace! Shelley Breen is a founding member of Point of Grace. For over thirty years, they have been touring, songwriting, and recording, encouraging countless people of faith with their music. Let me share a few items to give you a grasp of their success: With total sales in excess of 8 million units, the group has garnered two Platinum records; three GRAMMY® nominations; 27 No. 1 singles and numerous Dove Awards. Inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2018, Point of Grace has released 10 best-selling studio recordings, four Christmas albums, and such Christian radio standards as “I'll Be Believing,” “Keep the Candle Burning,” “How You Live (Turn Up the Music),” “Circle of Friends,” and “Jesus Will Still Be There.” The group founded the groundbreaking Girls of Grace conference; they appear regularly on the historic Grand Ole Opry stage; and they have authored multiple books, including their latest, How You Live: Lessons Learned from Point of Grace. In this conversation, Shelley shared behind-the-scenes details about their new album, Turn Your Eyes: Songs We Love, Songs You Know. She also talks about her creative habits, how the group chooses songs, how their newest book came together, and several of their upcoming concert appearances. This was a wide-ranging conversation, and I hope it inspires you to make Point of Grace's music a regular part of your listening! I also want to give a huge shout-out to Cindy Morgan, a successful author and recording artist herself. She was a guest a couple of months ago, talking about her new novel, The Year of Jubilee. She produced Point of Grace's new album, and also made the intro to Dana Cappillino, who set up the interview with Shelley. You can learn more about Point of Grace at https://pointofgrace.net, and follow the group on social media at https://www.facebook.com/pointofgrace/ and https://www.instagram.com/pointofgracemusic/.

WDW Radio # 717 - Cindy Morgan from TRON Interview - From the WDW Radio Archives Spoiler alert... I'm a bit of a nerd. Growing up, I loved (love) video games and technology, storytelling, adventure, and the unknown... and that hasn't changed much. More than 40 years ago, a Disney film was released that would forever change the science fiction genre, as well as animation, video gaming and the lives of many young geeks like myself. Smart, stylish and fun, the game grid of Tron was groundbreaking, and in 2010, Tron was reborn with the Tron: Legacy film (and do you remember the Tronorail at Walt Disney World, ElecTRONica at Disneyland, or what about Tron: Uprising on Disney XD... with all of them now on Disney+). So in 2012, on WDW Radio show # 277, a little, nerdy dream of mine came true, as I had the opportunity to speak in an exclusive interview with one of the original film's stars, Cindy Morgan, who played the dual role of Lora and Yori. She may or may not have also been the subject of a bit of a boyhood crush of mine for her role in Caddyshack. Cindy joined me to talk about her career and role in Tron, as she shared stories of the making of the films, the Tron phenomenon, her fans and much more. With the opening of TRON: Lightcycle Run this week in Magic Kingdom, the timing for listening back to my conversation with Cindy (who I still love seeing at comic and conventions) seemed appropriate. I may just have to reach out to her again for the follow up conversation we discussed. Are you a fan of the original TRON? What about TRON: Legacy? Have you experienced TRON Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom (or Shanghai Disneyland) yet? This week, my dear friend and gifted songwriter, Cindy Morgan, joins me for a great conversation about Enneagram Fours, including the push-pull dance of fours in relationships, the well of suffering we can get trapped in, and the importance of authenticity. We also discuss the story behind her debut novel, The Year of Jubilee, and explore how she integrated the Enneagram into the main characters' development. About Cindy Morgan Singer/songwriter Cindy L. Morgan is a two-time Grammy nominee, a thirteen-time Dove winner, and a recipient of the prestigious Songwriter of the Year trophy. An East Tennessee native, her evocative melodies and lyrics have mined the depths of life and love both in her own recording and through songwriting for noteworthy artists around the globe, including Vince Gill, India.Arie, Rascal Flatts, Amy Grant, Sandra McCracken, and Glen Campbell. Cindy is the author of two works of adult nonfiction—the memoir How Could I Ask for More: Stories of Blessings, Battles & Beauty (Worthy Inspire, 2015) and Barefoot on Barbed Wire: A Journey Out of Fear into Freedom (Harvest House Publishers, 2001)—and of the children's picture book Dance Me, Daddy (ZonderKidz, 2009).
