For the 20th anniversary of the second Hot Chip album, The Warning, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor initially connected as young teenagers in secondary school in southwest London in the early 90s. They bonded over being music obsessives, listening to a wide variety of genres, reading the music press, going to gigs together and eventually recording the songs they were writing. While they attended different universities, they continued to collaborate and officially formed Hot Chip in 2000. One of their early releases caught the attention of Moshi Moshi Records, who signed them to a deal. Their debut album, Coming on Strong, was released in 2004. Around this time, they developed a full band sound, adding other members, including Owen Clarke, Al Doyle, and Felix Martin. For their second album, they signed a deal with EMI Records. The Warning was eventually released in 2006. In this episode, Joe Goddard describes how Hot Chip's sound evolved over time as they began to embrace house music and develop a harder hitting style that was influenced by disco, hip hop and grime. As they were working on the album, they connected with James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of The DFA for a remix and found fellow like-minded musicians in the dance-punk revival that was emerging during this period. Goddard discusses how the limitations of home recording with Cubase software and vintage synthesizers like the Casio MT-70 helped inform their sound. Alexis Taylor discusses his love of singer/songwriter music, American indie rock, and 80s pop, which contrasted with but complimented the tracks that Goddard was putting together. As a duo, they developed their signature style where they would trade off singing and often sing together in unison using falsetto over a low register. Taylor also describes writing autobiographically and how a breakup around this time informed some of the reflective lyrics he was writing. From signing to a major label, to developing song ideas quickly, to expanding as a duo into a full band, to the stress of malfunctioning equipment in their live show, to taking inspiration from key artists like New Order, Prince, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin and ESG, to a Royal Trux album credit turning into a key line in “Over and Over”, to the enduring relatability of "Boy from School,” we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

Chaos erupts in the hall as bread and meats are soaked in a swirl of bloody filth (22.21). Eurymachus attempts to broker a truce with Odysseus, but it is rejected (22.57); he then calls the suitors to arms and is slaughtered (22.73). Telemachus brings armor and weapons to his father, the swineherd, and the cowherd (22.121), but the goatherd sneaks weapons to the suitors (22.151).On his second run, the cowherd and swineherd intercept the goatherd, tie him up, and hang him from the rafters (22.196). Athena first arrives in the guise of Mentor (22.217) and then perches like a sparrow on the rafters, assisting Odysseus with her man-destroying shield of thunder (22.250). The suitors fall into panicked madness as Odysseus and his men wheel into the slaughter, slashing left and right, with grisly screams breaking from cracked skulls and the floor awash with blood (22.311).Odysseus spares the bard and the herald but shows no mercy to the prophet (22.327). The slaughter complete, Eurycleia summons the disloyal female servants, who help carry out the corpses and clean the gore (22.458–471). Telemachus oversees the disloyal women being slowly hanged in the courtyard—a pitiful, ghastly death (22.487)—while the goatherd is retrieved and mutilated to death by the swineherd and cowherd (22.500). Peter Hook reflects on 50 years of music, the emotional weight of performing Joy Division and New Order live, and the many memories and ghosts of his past. Tickets for Peter Hook & The Light, Australia 2026 Topics Include: New Order toured Australia as early as 1982, helped by Factory Australasia's local support. Hooky calls Australia the only place he never wants to leave — he still suffers leaving every time. Peter Hook and the Light played their seventh-ever gig in Melbourne on their first Australian tour. He is now working through every New Order and Joy Division album ever recorded live. Get Ready features songs never played live as New Order, with Steve Morris largely absent during recording. The band's Grammy came from Orgy's heavy metal cover of Blue Monday — Hook loves the weird covers most. He revealed a plan to stage a full New Order classical concert, eyeing the Sydney Opera House. Ian Curtis performed with absolute conviction every single night — something Bernard Sumner couldn't match early on. Hook recalls first seeing Ian smash up a venue at 2:30am, dancing through broken tables — terrifying and electrifying. That chaotic Stiff/Chiswick talent show led directly to Rob Gretton becoming Joy Division's manager. Ian's lyrics, Hook says, are heartbreaking up close — Love Will Tear Us Apart masks devastating words in euphoric music. Singing Ian's words himself has given Hook a profound new insight into what Curtis was actually expressing. Tony Wilson signed them with a handshake — no contracts — while other labels arrived with thick legal documents. Bernard Sumner found the Unknown Pleasures pulsar image in a textbook; nobody planned the iconic sleeve. Hooky was actually sued for bootlegging the Unknown Pleasures artwork — which Factory themselves had originally stolen. Ian Curtis reportedly wrote a letter complaining about how Closer sounded — a detail Hook only learned years later. During Closer sessions, Curtis was being torn apart: marriage collapsing, new love, epilepsy worsening, the band pushing forward. Hook deeply regrets not seeing Ian before his cremation — but a gravedigger privately told him where Curtis is actually buried. The inquest into Ian's death so disgusted the band they decided on the spot to continue as New Order. Joy Division was deliberately boxed away for 30 years; Bernard called playing those songs "miserable" and refused to continue. Bobby Gillespie suggested the album playback concept so Hook could faithfully recreate Martin Hannett's studio sound live. Watching his son learn Joy Division bass lines at the same age Hook was then felt like staring into the past. Performing these songs, Hook says he is "living surrounded by ghosts" of collaborators now gone. The K-93 sessions saw Killing Joke's Geordie Walker move into Hook's Manchester home for six weeks, causing complete chaos. Those lost K-93 tapes mysteriously surfaced after the label went bankrupt — and Jaz Coleman promptly went silent again. Döhmann Helix One MK III Turntable with Vacuum Hold-Down Previewing at The 2026 AXPONA Show, I’m not sure whether the $150,000 price tag included the Wilson Benesch Graviton Ti arm, Tessellate Diamond cartridge, Supatrac Nighthawk 12** arm with DS Audio Grandmaster EX cartridge, analog front end feeding the ARC Ref 10 phono (or DS Audio TB-100 tube equalizer), the new ARC Ref 20 preamp, ARC Ref 330 mono amps, Wilson Audio XVX loudspeakers, cables from Transparent and the Olympus Ultra racks from Critical Mass Systems… or not. Any track marked * has been given either a tiny or a slightly larger 41 Rooms tweak/edit/chop and the occasional tune might sound a bit dodgy, quality-wise. On top of that, the switch between different decades and production values never helps in the mix here. The onstage antics were definitely inspired by seeing the hotel’s flyer in the afternoon… and I don’t remember Liam turning up. Me on photos duty, none of which I would have remembered until Steve Morris sent me photos I’d taken this night… with my writing on the back… followed by the above Movement Definitive Edition then including the video. I remember the afternoon soundcheck chat and Ozzy leaving the mixing desk mid gig and standing next to me but the things you forget… 05.03 PAUL HAIG – Trip Out The Rider – 7″ – Impotent Fury – 2010 ‘Packaged in a fancy pants paper cut sleeve that is hand screen-printed, foil embossed and limited to 500 copies. Rumoured to be the first of six vinyl releases… ‘ – Discogs His albums surface only very occasionally these days and any teaser singles even less so. This 7″ – driving with the zest of his early years – appears to have been the most recent but he’s a ‘signature’ voice we should hear more of. 07.41 LINES OF SILENCE – Lines In Opposition (Radio Edit) – Lines In Opposition, LP – Sprechen – 2026 These sleeves aren’t getting any easier to look at. An experimental krautrock band (Can? Neu?… ) out of Todmorden, UK – ‘a hotbed of UFO activity and home to the UK’s highest ever beach‘ – and I slightly cheated the vinyl thing here, as the Radio Edit is only downloadable, with the full version on the just released vinyl album. Should have gone with the latter. 11.12 SILICON VALLEY – X-Cell – Cold Waves Of Color Volume 3, v/artists LP – Color Disc – 2016 Whoever they were/are, they seem to have only released six singular tracks over a period of forty two years(!) * and on Color Disc label, v/artist albums only. A side hustle, the SV releases are not. * Makes Got-Ta-Scatta look prolific. 15.09 CLOCK DVA – 4 Hours (7″ Version) – 7″ – Fetish – 1981 Adi Newton is a voice that sits you up but they’d had a bucket load of self and semi released material before I tuned in with the Thirst album that includes this their debut 7″. 18.59 THE EVENT GROUP – Approach Work (Pt B) – Approach Work, self released, cassette only – ? – 1983 For any kids picking up on this, the voice you hear here is of England cricketing legend of yesteryear, Freddie Truman, also featured on the main Approach Work track already playlisted on 41 Rooms and the cassette’s cover, obviously, where he nearly looks like he’s got his ever present pipe on the go. And as for the church bells on the track… maybe adding to the image of a village green setting? Search out the band’s Feb ’82 Riverside TV appearance at some point. An entertaining watch at the time and another release for me to upload (the images anyway) to Discogs at some point, maybe. 25.11 UT – Evangelist – Split 7″ – Blast First – 1989 Yep, also the lead track from the 1987 album, In Gut’s House but I’ve gone for the, split with Dinosaur Jr., 7″ and as mentioned before here at 41 Rooms, a band I’ve grown to like more now than I maybe did back then. Supporting The Fall, Bedford Boys Club, 1.10.83 Photo credit: Dec Hickey 27.57 YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS – Include Me Out – Colossal Youth, LP – Rough Trade – 1980 In YMG world this is them nearly rocking out! 29.50 KAREN MARKS – Cold Café – 7″ – Astor – 1980 Out of Australia and her only release at the time but the price tag the single has acquired through the years since (one of a few on this show), brought about a 2019 EP of tracks also recorded back in the day. Definitely an ‘indie’ sound. 32.42 DEENA WEBSTER – Scarborough Fair – 7″ – Parlophone – 1968 A folk standard I seem to remember hearing fairly regularly when I was young, so in one guise or another it must have cropped up on the radio and TV, though I never had the urge to buy it until I heard Deena’s version in more recent years and though she maintained the tempo of the song’s more traditional singers it’s everything backing her wasting no time in getting ‘busy’ that helps this version get my vote. ‘Bustling folk’, so let’s hear it for Deena and her arranger… “I chose none of the singles (from the album Is Tuesdays Child) apart from Scarborough Fair.” The track was one of the first arrangements for another artist by Barbara Moore. She was best known for her work as a singer with The Ladybirds and, when she arrived at the studio, many of the musicians thought that she'd come to help with backing vocals. She remembers that when she got onto the rostrum to conduct,the baton “it fell out of my sweaty little palm and ended up on the bass drum – that relaxed the whole atmosphere”. At the end of the session, Moore received a standing ovation from the 60 string andhorn players present. – Record Collector/Ian Shirley, #424, Jan 2014 edit 35.38 AL STEWART – Turn Into Earth – 7″ b-side – Decca – 1966 The flip may from Stewart’s debut release and his vocal ‘swagger’ makes this a rarity, in that it’s the only time I can think of where I’ve preferred a Yardbirds song performed by others… not that there are many of those. 38.29 MASSIVE ATTACK – Angel (Live) – Stream only – 2006 Performed as part of UK Channel 4’s first season of Live from Abbey Road series, with the Bristol band and Horace Andy managing to give the track even more gravitas and tension than on the its studio recording. I’d never heard of them until this track recently bumped into me but you then do a bit of a dig and Duvet has 43million Youtube hits… so you have to do a bigger dig. Here they sound not unlike The Sundays but that bigger dig explains some of the above. 01.00.00 RENAISSANCE – Back Home Once Again – 7″ – Warner Brothers – 1977 And what were the chances? Looking for something to follow Boa’s Duvet I decided on this 1977 single from Renaissance, a ‘prog folk’ band who for a couple of years in the late ’70s I had a real liking for. It turns out that Bôa’s drummer, Lee Sullivan is the son of Renaissance’s former drummer, Terry Sullivan. Who’d have thunk, eh? 01.03.03 HANNE HUKKELBERG – Do As I Do – Little Things, LP – Leaf – 2005 Promo’d (albeit as a CD only) as the single off the album at the time, so this was the ‘teaser’ – and it’s easy to see why. Cute! 01.06.39 08/15 – 1000 Gelbe Tennisbälle – 7″ – Sterbt Alle – 2025 If you had thoughts of releasing music on the subject of 1000 yellow tennis balls then someone’s beaten you to it. So, you’re only get the reverse… and that’s bad enough. 01.34.27 WAMDUE PROJECT – King Of My Castle (Original Version) * – 12″ – Eruption – 1998 More kings! Unusual for a dance track with nothing special in the vocals department to chart mainstream but this did just that. Maybe some intrigue and charm in the ‘Must be the reason why I’m king of my castle‘ lyric as it chugs along? Sometimes there’s just no knowing… 01.39.04 JOHNNY MAESTRO & THE CRESTS – I’m Stepping Out Of The Picture – 7″ – Scepter Records – 1965 If there’s a world in music I won’t stop finding ‘new’ gems it’s the rare/northern etc soul scene. I heard this gritty and restrained-in-equal-measures brassy belter for the first time only recently, via Beth Arzy (Jetstream Pony and others) capturing herself in front of a DJ spinning this tune. Re-released a couple of times in the intervening years, I won’t though be getting an original copy any time soon, as that could be anywhere between $800 and for a promo copy, $1700! 01.41.17 JIMMY RUFFIN – It’s Wonderful (To Be Loved By You) – 7″ – Tamla Motown – 1970 Motown still in their prime in these years and come the mid-late 70s I had the grand notion of collecting every UK Motown single between TMG 501 and TMG 801… but I soon gave up the ghost, though this one made it into the fold. 01.43.58 McFADDEN & WHITEHEAD – Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now * – 12″ – Philadelphia Int – 1979 Reminds me of Bedfordshire clubs of the time, and footballing mates and girlfriends and not a care in the world. 01.49.53 THE TYRREL CORPORATION – Going Home (Original Mix) * – 12″ – Cooltempo – 1992 Had three or four biggish tunes that gave them an identity of sorts. Not sure why great train robber, Buster Edwards is here but this was a 15.8.92 ad, most probably in Record Mirror. 01.55.08 NEW ORDER (Again!) – World In Motion (1990 No Alla Violenza Mix) * – 12″ – Factory – 1990 It’s World Cup time again! So, for only the second time (I think) in 41 Rooms’ history it’s New Order twice in one show – and the last time was Show 1! With a break in there nicked from somewhere I can’t quite grasp and Barney’s vocal deservedly getting some real breathing space here in between the Italo piano, will it do the job for us footie fans this time around? And like most of Austin, I have been grieving the loss of his dad, Jon Dee Graham as an inspirational artist and friend after his passing in March. While caring for his dad after his second spine surgery, William wrote and recorded his new EP, the gorgeous and (mostly) upbeat, "Belrose Motel" out this Friday, June 5th on Strolling Bones Records. We have a long and deep conversation about losing his dad, dealing with his own grief and the whole community's grief, keeping his dad's music and memory alive, writing and recording "Belrose Motel" at home, how his passion for architecture informs his music, producing Jon Dee's last album, New Order, and much more. In our previous episode, we went deep into the history of Cabaret Voltaire and their importance to UK industrial and, latterly, dance music. Now, we follow the trail we laid therein by taking a journey through the band's extensive discography, really fleshing out how they went from a Sheffield attic in 1973 to a Patagonian field site recording lizards for David Attenborough. Along the way, we take in televangelists, voodoo, Charles Manson samples, Velvet Underground covers, a near-miss with Todd Terry, and a Taylor Swift pressing-plant mix-up that turned a forgotten ambient track into a viral curiosity decades later.Phil Eaglesham (aka P6 - ex-Stretchheads and De Salvo, current OMO frontman) returns to bestow upon us his encyclopaedic knowledge of the band and British industrial music. We start in 1974 with the lo-fi bedroom experiments of Cabaret Voltaire 1974–76, work through the rough-edged early Rough Trade EPs, the spring-reverb wilderness of Three Mantras and Voice of America, the cult monument that is Red Mecca, and the band's stylistic pivots through Hai!, 2x45, The Crackdown, Micro-Phonies, The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord, Code, and beyond. We also pick at the more controversial late chapters, including the major-label years, the slightly-too-late acid house pivot, and Richard H. Kirk's solo reactivation of the name.Along the way, we explore the band as a video production company that happened to make music; their roles as curators and tastemakers via Double Vision; the Burroughs-and-televangelism worldview that made them frighteningly prescient about Reagan-era Christian nationalism; and their unsung debt to Black American music and dub. Jerk Gustafsson is a Swedish game developer whose career has been shaped by a builder's instinct — first in the physical world, and then in virtual ones. He left school at fifteen to work as a bricklayer, before discovering PC games in his twenties through Quake, the id Software classic that opened his eyes not only to play, but to the thrill of creating spaces of his own. After teaching himself level design through modding tools, he joined Starbreeze in 1998, where he worked on acclaimed titles including The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness, eventually stepping into a lead design role. Later, as a founding force at MachineGames, he helped guide the studio's bold revival of Wolfenstein with The New Order and The Old Blood. "But What Time Is It Really?" Because their legacy is so vast, their musical output so singular and their influence so far-reaching, telling you a little bit about Cabaret Voltaire is like telling you a little bit about outer space. A long tine ago, say 1973, in a galaxy far, far away, say Sheffield, England, Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson got together to, in their words, make music without musical instruments. What did that mean? Well, it meant innovation because this was not a three-piece banging away in a garage, it was three guys experimenting with tape loops, custom-built kit oscillators, keyboards and wind instruments. Although traditional instruments were included, Cabaret Voltaire were anything but a traditional band. Falling somewhere between performance art and industrial music, Cabaret Voltaire remain one of the most innovative, idiosyncratic and unique bands of all time. Incorporating elements of techno, house, funk, synthpop, electronica and dub, the band's striking soundscapes were massively influential to bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, Skinny Puppy, David J. and Nine Inch Nails. Watson left the band in 1981 but Mallinder and Kirk soldiered on, keeping up Cabaret Voltaire's unbelievable working pace. The band put out fifteen albums in as many years, including classics like Mix-Up, Red Mecca, The Crackdown and Micro-Phonies. Kirk died in 2021 at 65 and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band, Mallinder and Watson started touring, put out a live album and will be on the road until year's end, taking their valedictory bow. A journalist, an academic, a studio owner, a producer and a filmmaker whose videos have been exhibited at MOMA in New York, Mallinder remains a busy man and I'll let him tell you all about that. But let me say this: if you listen to Cabaret Voltaire, it's like listening to the future before it happened.
