Paula jumps back into a brand new season of “Faith & Calling” with a powerful conversation from a raw and rugged place where the unrelenting pain of loss intersects with the unending goodness of God. Her guest this week, TobyMac – the seven-time GRAMMY winner, contemporary Christian singer, rapper, songwriter and former DC Talk member, knows these crossroads of heartache intimately. He's spent the last several years privately grieving the tragic loss of his 21-year-old son, Truett, in 2019. In this episode TobyMac opens up about the deep anguish that's changed him forever and the deeper experience of God's goodness that's been keeping him afloat. Hear how he poured this powerful testimony into his new album, “Life After Death”, which includes major collaborations with the likes of Sheryl Crow – a surprising friendship born, as he tells Paula, from outside the music industry. TobyMac and Paula also discuss what he's clinging to as time marches on, his advice for other parents struggling with the loss of a child and his hope-filled belief on why we all go through the painful places at one time or another in this life. Yesterday was an amazing morning for Shawna; God’s word speaking to her deepest needs, just the right song sent from her daughter, an audio book during her workout giving her tools for the battle—it’s a conversation about God giving us exactly what we need, when we need it. Then, your deepest wish is probably not your deepest wish. Next, she was lashing out at Shawna, and the Lord whispered, “Give her a hug.” Then, after the loss of his son Truett to an accidental drug overdose in 2019, Toby Mac didn’t think he’d ever write a happy song again. Next, Shawna doesn’t want to wait till heaven for her mountain to be moved. She’s believing for God to do great things now. But what if the mountain remains firmly rooted? Is that because we don’t have enough faith?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are you just plain tired as we move into fall? That's the vibe I'm getting from listener feedback, and I'm right there with you! Today's episode is short and sweet. It's a reflection on rest in the broader sense…physical, emotional, spiritual. I'm offering a few thoughts about the kind of rest that refreshes and renews…so important for all of us. I've even got a great new TobyMac release to share, called (believe it or not) "Rest." Takeaways: My acronym for REST. RENEW YOUR SPIRIT with prayer, meditation, calming reading or music. Try TobyMac's latest release, “Rest” from his Life After Death album. EXERCISE YOUR BODY by moving it (walking, stretching) even for 10 min at a time - for a break, to decrease anxiety/depression, and get those endorphins (creating a positive feeling) flowing. Exercise helps us rest! SLEEP, with a goal of 7 hours, allowing for REM sleep. The brain is busy during sleep, as it sorts and stores info from your day, cells repair, immunity is strengthened, the sympathetic nervous system relaxes keeping BP down, and cortisol (stress hormone) levels decrease. Develop a sleep routine that calms you and make it a priority. TEND SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS, determining who will listen to understand, not always to respond. Is this a family member, friend, therapist, pastor? Caryn & Jeremy recently have lost some friends and co-workers over the last year and at a Celebration of Life ceremony for one of them, TobyMac was sharing from his experience of losing his son. As the family mourned the loss of their husband and father, Toby specifically encouraged the children who had just lost their father to press into God and know that He is still good.It reminded me of this passage:"The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made." - Psalm 145:9Even when we don't understand what God is doing, we can always trust His heart and know that His purposes for us are good (Romans 8:28).

Ayúdame hoy a elegirlas cuidadosamente. Quiero que mis palabras vivifiquen a quienes las oyen. ¡Hoy quiero contagiar esperanza!

Hey friends! On today's episode, we are in Matthew 10:32-39. In this passage, Jesus is teaching his disciples how to be disciples, what it means to be a disciple, their responsibilities...and how being a follower of Christ means seeking after the Kingdom and not the world. Have you heard the TobyMac song "I don't want to gain the whole world and lose my soul?" That's what we are going to talk about, but we are going much deeper than fame and fortune. We are going there and talking about how we can idolize every our families, relationships, and friends too. You Start Today with Dr. Lee Warren | Weekly Prescriptions to Become Healthier, Feel Better, and Be Happier.

A few thoughts on the differences between gardeners and axe-wielders I read a weekly newsletter from an Australian theologian named Michael Bird. This week, he quoted an old Afghan proverb that I can't shake: "The axe never remembers the tree, but the tree always remembers the axe." Today, we're going to talk about the power our words have to either help or hurt other people. Not surprisingly, the Bible has a lot to say about this. Here are a few examples: 1. Proverbs 11:9 Evil words destroy one's friends; wise discernment rescues the godly. 2. Proverbs 15:4 Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. 3. Proverbs 16:24 Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. 4. Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue... 5. Proverbs 18:4 A person's words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook. 6. Proverbs 12:18 There is one who speaks rashly like he thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 7. Proverbs 25:18 Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow. 8. Luke 6:43-45 For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart. Remember that what you say to others can be forgiven, but the nature of how our brains store negative experiences means that those words will never be forgotten. So be careful where you swing that axe! Announcement: I'm switching my newsletter to an app called Substack (download here for Apple, coming soon for Android/Google). It will still come to your inbox via email, so if you don't want to use the app, you'll still be good! More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Our convictions govern our behavior. You will need deep convictions to stand for your faith in the culture today. This is just what Newsboys sings about in their new single "STAND."     I hope to inspire you to read your Bible for yourself this week. Submitting to God's Word as true will develop deep convictions. This is just the foundation you need to stand on when the waves of culture come crashing upon your shore. In this week's episode, I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Meditate on Scripture Read and keep on reading Read in context Two college-aged girls who have taken a stand for the unborn The Ethics 101 article in the Maxwell Leadership Bible - Amazon Paid Link How Uriah's convictions determine his behavior, and ultimately his fate - 2 Samuel 11 John Maxwell's definition of conviction - "A strong belief that so governs your decisions that you are willing to die for it." The progression from idea to opinion to belief to commitment to conviction Developing convictions in our lives through: Acknowledging the Bible as the truth source from which we will live Choosing to apply truth from that source to our daily life Exposing ourselves to a relevant need or crisis Determining ahead of time where we stand Uncovering Paul's call to stand in his letter to the Philippians - Philippians 1:27, Philippians 4:1 Counting the cost with Paul in Philippians 1:20-21 Discovering how Paul was willing to die for the magnification of Christ - Philippians 1:24-36 How Paul was willing to die for the gospel, and it is in light of this deep conviction that he calls on us to stand - Philippians 1:27-30 Standing firm as unified believers, not as individuals Together With the same mind (the mind of Christ) In service unto death (if necessary) Taking a stand because our future hope outshines the cost to stand   So we stand firm by leaning into each other.
