You're tuned into The Hangover Sessions on BFF.fm. Episode 342 kicks off with nine tracks hand-picked by your host to ease you in, ease you out, and generally make whatever time of day it is feel a little more like the right time of day. We're talking Justin Jay, Baba Stiltz, a little Cymande with Celeste, some Laura Marling, a couple of Stones classics, and a few other things your friends probably aren't playing you. Then: we turn it over to our featured artist. The Big Forgive are an Oakland punk band who believe in quality of life, playing fast, and not wasting your time. Their songs clock in under three minutes, their riffs are loud, their hooks are real, and their lyrics are smarter than they need to be. The band also perform several songs live on this show, and every second of it worth your ears ~ incl. a brand new song, coming to the web-waves + beyond very soon. This is The Hangover Sessions. Happy Listening!
This week's show was another easy ride through the good stuff… soul, rare groove, deep funk and a few timeless tracks that never lose their shine, tunes that fit perfectly with a slow Sunday morning, coffee in hand and the speakers doing their thing. We kicked things off with Glenn Jones and the stripped-back “Show Me (Live On-Air Unplugged at Kiss FM NY)”. A smooth, soulful and a perfect way to ease into the show. The late Lynden David Hall stepped in with “Are We Still Cool?” – a reminder of just how special his voice was. There was plenty of newer soul in the mix too, Cleo Sol kept things warm with “Miss Romantic”, and Moonchild & PJ Morton added a thoughtful moment with “Fear (Hey Friend).” We picked up the groove with Em-Cee's “Feel Good!” doing exactly what it says on the tin, while Ernie & The Family McKone kept the energy bubbling with “That Girl.” A little crate-digging took us back to some serious foundations with The Skull Snaps, Cymande, and Fred Wesley & The JB's As we entered the final part of the show the vibe settled into something a little deeper with Omar's “Latin Salsa”, Slowe's new offering “How Hard Can It Be?”, and some Chaka Khan before closing out with Marvin Gaye's “I Want You”, and the signature “Thank You Thank You.” with gratitude. Another show and another stack of great music. If you like your soul with a bit of depth, groove and history in the mix, this one's definitely worth a listen – until next time . . .

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British funk band Cymande in under thirty minutes.Cymande was formed in London, in 1971. All were members of an Afro-Caribbean community in Balham, originating from nations such as Guyana, Jamaica, and Saint Vincent. Cymande were discovered by British producer John Schroeder while they played in a club in Soho in 1971. Schroeder recorded some demos and convinced Janus Records to sign the group. Their first single 'The Message' reached the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B charts in the United States. Their debut album was released in 1972 and also reached the Billboard pop and R&B albums charts in the United States. In 1973 they made history as the first British band to headline the Apollo Theatre in New York, and they also performed on Soul Train. However, they achieved little recognition in their home country. The lack of support from the British music industry caused the group to disband in 1974.After a period of obscurity, Cymande's music was rediscovered in the 1980s and 1990s. Some of their songs were deconstructed and used as breakbeats by early hip-hop DJs. Their song 'Bra' is the most sampled track, having been used approximately 27 times in various hip-hop and other music tracks.A new album Renascence was released in 2025, The also group announced 2025 US and European shows to support the release, continuing with their post-pandemic increase in short tours and festival appearances. In this episode I am in discussion with Bhoke.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. British funk group Cymande's journey to Renascence has multiple different layers. From a successful debut album in 1972. Going on an extended hiatus only a couple of years later and a rediscovery of their music thanks to the early stages of hip hop with breakbeats and samples. Cymande returned with their first album in 41 years back in 2015 and now they've returned with a new album Renascence, this week's WNXP Record of the Week.

GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE lovingly recounts the journey of Cymande, a group of Black British musicians who all came to the U.K. from the Caribbean as children, released three brilliant albums in quick succession in the early 1970s and were embraced in the USA. But in the U.K., they faced a music business beset by prejudice against homegrown Black talent and were largely ignored. They originally split in 1975, but their music lived on, as successive generations of artists and fans found and embraced their songs. Hip Hop, House, Drum and Bass, R&B, Rare Groove, and crate-digging communities all saw something in the songs of Cymande that inspired them. Through insightful interviews with band members and influential figures including Mark Ronson, Laura Lee and Mark Speer (Khruangbin), DJ Maseo (De La Soul), Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Cut Chemist, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Louie Vega, and Kool DJ Red Alert, this stranger than fiction documentary explores the band's profound impact and enduring legacy. Director Tim MacKenzie-Smith stops by to talk about his own introduction to the music of Cymande, designing the look and feel of the film to seen as a big screen communal experience, how the band members kept each others hope, music and spirit alive over the years, and the joy of seeing the band and their music get the recognition it deserves. Welcome back to the Record Report! This episode, we'll be taking a trip back over the pond, and back in time to review Cymande's self-titled debut, Cymande. Dropping only a year after Funkadelic's Maggot Brain and long before other projects influence the sound of the 1970s, Cymande is a project that uses several influences across the globe to create one of the earliest forms of funk music. Though their story is told mainly through seperate interviews and documentary Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande. Like they always do, Ahmad and Vance choose their Top 3 tracks, talk about the international elements behind the complex production, and why Cymande's music is one that many music (and hip-hop) lovers should give a listen. We also talk about 'Like That', Amapiano, and take a look through Wale's Billboard charts stats.

As broadcast June 10, 2022 with plenty of laughs in memory for our stream experience. Tonight we welcomed Dutch Canada-based singer-songwriter Nurdana De Rijcke to the show to talk about her new EP "Coming Home," which drops on Tuesday. Inspired and written by her dearly departed father Rob, Nurdjana took these songs and put her own imprint on them to both pay tribute and bring closure to the process of loss. Despite the background of loss, this two hour show is certainly a summery celebration of music, with Nurdjana bringing her favorites to the forefront in a playlist of inspirations to her soulful sound.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Gnarls Barkley – CrazyKobo Town – London TownJupiter & Okwess – Na KozongaCymande - BraFinley Quaye – Sunday ShiningThe Roots – The Seed 2.0 Part II (31:49)Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy – Yu Ya YummaQuadron – Slippin'Kendra Morris – This LifeBetty Harris – There's A Break In The RoadLyn Collins – Take Me Just As I AmMarijata – No Condition Is Permanent Part III (61:34)Nurdjana – Do The Right ThingStevie Wonder – Higher GroundAretha Franklin – Save MeLake Street Dive – Good KisserSharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – How Do I Let A Good Man Down?Jamie Lidell – Another Day Part IV (94:29)Nurdjana – She Gives Me WaterMadcon – Beggin'John Legend – Save RoomJoss Stone – Put Your Hands On MeAmy Winehouse – Back To BlackMayer Hawthorne – A Long Time
