R-Soul: Reclaiming the Soul of Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice
Faith Organizers Kelley Fox and Terry Williams explain why restoring the reproductive rights protections of Roe v. Wade is about as useful as reinstituting the 1973 minimum wage: woefully insufficient and downright ridiculous. Using the modern experience of inflation and stagnant wages, Kelley and Terry talk about what a truly thriving future looks like for Ohioans — both in their pocketbooks and their reproductive health experiences. Listen along as everything from BIPOC health equity to Appalachian Abortion access get explored through the lens what a flourishing future could and should look like if our politics weren't mired in fighting for merely a return to 50-year-old standards of reproductive health, rights, and justice. It can be hard trying to decide if you want children or not, and it can be doubly difficult when there are two people involved in the decision. That's why I wanted to speak to today's guest, Melanie Hunter, who went with her husband to couple's therapy, specifically to unpack the question: should they have kids? It was fascinating to hear about how they made an intentional choice to be childfree, and heeded their therapists' advice that, if you're not going to make a baby, you should create something else together: a purpose, a life.Follow Melanie on Instagram @melaniehunter888.Check out the great work of Best Buddies International. And the book Melanie referred to is Cunt: A Declaration of Independence, by Inga Muscio.
All things literature are the focus of this week's GCC episode where Mike is joined by Ada McCarthy discussing her love of poetry, books and swear words, especially “the C bomb” (which is mainly discussed in the second half)! This week is part 1 of their discussion (all Patreon supporters already have access to part 2), where Ada explains how she started listening to and guesting on podcasts through friend of the show Tony Farina, the duo then discuss some of their recent favourite (audio)books, their respective opinions on Shakespeare and then Ada delves into her own love of poetry; how it started, her published works and why she enjoys it so much. Part 1 of their conversation draws to a close with Ada talking about her published works and their conversation on the C word (cunt) begins! Next week, for part 2, the discussion on the swear word Cunt goes into full-swing! Ada talks about her chapbook release “Cunt Poems” and why she wrote a collection of poems surrounding the word, how the UK & US view the word differently, which leads to Mike telling Ada about the UK Channel 4 show “Naked Attraction” and the conversation nears its end when Ada explains why she is such a proponent for Yoga and her experiences with it!
