Ohio and West Virginia share a lot more than a border — common economic systems, cultural bonds, and legislative environments hostile to reproductive rights make for strong relationships between reproductive freedom advocates across both states. Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams take you inside a recent day-long training event where Faith Choice Ohio staff led our friends at WV FREE through multiple faith-in-action training sessions. Exploring the trainings we offered in this Ohio-West Virginia partnership event, Kelley and Rev. For the one millionth time (it feels like it!), nationwide access to Mifepristone is again under judicial threat. Join Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams for an update about the latest rulings, as well as a discussion of the past, present, and possible futures of this safe & effective medication that helps make most abortions in the U.S. possible. Sometimes known by its older name of RU-486, mail-order Mifepristone has become the center of a strategy by anti-abortion zealots that aims to eliminate abortion access altogether. Kelley and Rev. Terry explain what a world of difference Mifepristone has made for abortion access and why the drug's continued legal availability is a key part to creating safe futures for all people who choose abortion. Aboveground, Manhattan's Riverside Park provides open space for the densely populated Upper West Side. Beneath its surface run railroad tunnels, disused for decades, where over the years unhoused people have taken shelter. The sociologist Terry Williams ventured into the tunnel residents' world, seeking to understand life on the margins and out of sight. He visited the tunnels between West Seventy-Second and West Ninety-Sixth Streets hundreds of times from 1991 to 1996, when authorities cleared them out to make way for Amtrak passenger service, and again between 2000 and 2020.  Life Underground: Encounters with People Below the Streets of New York (Columbia UP, 2024) explores this society below the surface and the varieties of experience among unhoused people. Bringing together anecdotal material, field observations, photographs, transcribed conversations with residents, and excerpts from personal journals, Williams provides a vivid ethnographic portrait of individual people, day-to-day activities, and the social world of the underground and their engagement with the world above, which they call “topside.” He shows how marginalized people strive to make a place for themselves amid neglect and isolation as they struggle for dignity. Featuring Williams's distinctive ethnographic eye and deep empathy for those on the margins, Life Underground shines a unique light on a vanished subterranean community. 2025 brought what feels like several years' worth of experiences: a new federal political administration, drastic worsening of life for families in the U.S. due to Project 2025, and a deepening struggle for reproductive freedom in Ohio and beyond. Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams look back on the year from both community and organizational perspectives, exploring how the seemingly darkest of times can be fruitful ground for growth, strategic development, and expectant preparation. Kelley and Terry highlight the amazing things that happened at Faith Choice Ohio in the past year including launching our on-demand Faith for Repro Training Center, developing 10 new mini-zine offerings, organizing across regions with various clergy & congregations, and much more! Ohio enshrined reproductive freedom in the state constitution in 2023, but sneaky attempts to thwart the will of the people are still very much in play. Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams take aim at some sly laws slipped in to the state budget and shoved through the latest legislative session that seek to burden reproductive healthcare providers, stigmatize abortion seekers, and ultimately force a minority religious viewpoint onto the bodies of every Ohioan. Calling out the dishonesty and religious hypocrisy of crafty anti-abortion zealots, Kelley and Terry help listeners gain perspective, centering this episode on the important truth at the core of this struggle — that people who support abortion-positive policies are in the majority in Ohio and beyond. Sharing her experience as a Catholic woman living in southern Ohio, special guest Sister Shannon joins Rev. Terry Williams for a discussion about bodies, belovedness, and boldly claiming a living faith. As a faithful Roman Catholic believer who has experienced dating, single motherhood, and now marriage, Sister Shannon reflects on the meaningfulness of being a pro-choice person of faith who trusts other people to make choices about their own bodies while expecting the same trust from them in return. Lifting up her lifegiving encounters with our partner organization Catholics for Choice, Sister Shannon discusses her journey with finding solidarity and wholeness among the majority of Roman Catholics who support reproductive freedom (no matter what the church's hierarchy has to say!) Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams tear into federal government shutdown specifics about how slashing SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — is a direct assault on reproductive health, rights, and justice. Detailing the connection between food security and reproductive justice, Kelley and Rev. Terry name the shameful irony of the anti-abortion movement aligning with interests that simultaneously seek to stop feeding children & that see ending hunger as a personal problem rather than a societal responsibility.
