All throughout both the Old and New Testaments, we see a clear pattern of people in Scripture turning to prayer and fasting in times of uncertainty, brokenness, and need. And in those examples, we find that prayer and fasting are not just religious obligations but natural responses to desperation. And we find that moments of crisis can lead to spiritual renewal when approached with humility and dependence on God. And we find that whether you and I are facing the unknown road ahead or the ruins of life, the invitation is to pray and fast, recognizing that our deepest hunger can only be satisfied by God. SPEAKERS: Jay Kim (Saratoga), video (South Hills) Bible Passage(s): Ezra 8:21,23, Nehemiah 1:3-4

We heard a testimony about what it means to turn one's life over to God's care, alongside a reflection on Step 3: deciding to entrust our will and lives to Christ. The message reminds us that surrender is not weakness but a bold act of faith—choosing to believe God is able to carry what we cannot. It encourages us to release our fears, lean on God's strength, and take the next step of trust in our own journeys. Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | September 21, 2025 Referenced Scripture: Romans 7:21-25, Romans 8:5-8, John 16:8, Romans 8:13, 1 Thessalonians 5:19, Ephesians 4:30, 2 Corinthians 10:5, James 5:16, Galatians 6:7-9 Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together, pg. 112 Sin demands to have a man by himself. It withdraws him from the community. The more isolated a person is, the more destructive will be the power of sin over him…. Sin wants to remain unknown. It shuns the light. In the darkness of the unexpressed it poisons the whole being of a person. Reflection Questions: Romans 7:21-25 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!... 1. In Romans 7, Paul describes his internal battle with sin. How would you describe your own battle to overcome sin in your life? 2. Paul uses the term “flesh” to describe what we are battling against. How would you define “flesh” as Paul uses it in the Bible? 3. The battle is between our flesh and the Spirit. Paul says the battleground is the MIND. Why is the mind so important? How does sin often start in our mind(thoughts)? Explain. Romans 8:13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. 4. How can we put to death sin in our life by the power of the Holy Spirit? John 16:8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong (conviction) about sin and righteousness and judgment… Romans 8:1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 5. What is the difference between Conviction and Condemnation? Why is conviction a good thing and condemnation a bad thing? How can we experience conviction while at the same time not experience condemnation? 6. What does it mean to have our mind set on the “flesh”? Describe. Give examples. 7. What does it mean to have our mind set on the “Spirit”? What are things that the Spirit draws our attention to? 8. What is your mind set on? How can we know what our mind is set on? Send us a textIn this episode of the Healing the City podcast, Pastor Mark and Pastor Eric sit down to talk about what it actually means to belong. They explore how the Village understands membership, not as signing a line or joining a club, but as stepping into responsibility, stability, and shared life. Drawing from the Village's neo-monastic approach, they reflect on how true belonging always demands something of us: showing up, carrying one another's burdens, and submitting ourselves to a larger story. This isn't about chasing ideal community; it's about committing to walk with real people, in all their beauty and brokenness, and letting that shape us into something stronger and more whole.Support the show"Healing the City" is a profound and dynamic weekly podcast that dives into the complexities of creating healthier communities. We are powerless to fix our deepest struggles on our own, but God can. In this sermon out of Acts 15, we delve into the early church's struggle with legalism and the true meaning of salvation by grace. The central conflict revolves around whether Gentile believers needed to follow Jewish customs to be saved. This debate mirrors our own struggles with adding human requirements to God's free gift of grace. We're reminded that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by our works or adherence to religious traditions. The apostles' resolution to this conflict teaches us valuable lessons about unity, sensitivity to others' consciences, and the importance of basing our decisions on Scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we reflect on this passage, we're challenged to examine our own hearts: Are we relying solely on God's grace, or are we unconsciously adding our own conditions to salvation? How can we better extend grace to others while remaining true to the gospel?

We launched our new 12-week series, Stepping into Life Together, with a message from Luke 15 that highlights the problem of the older brother—someone unable to accept the Father's love. The invitation is to take Step One of the 12 Steps: to admit our lives are unmanageable and we need help. "Life together is a gift, not a given." Jesus declared that his disciples would be his witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” Early Christians lived out this proclamation in powerful and palpable ways. Today we struggle to witness to those close to us, let alone to those at the ends of the earth. This series offers a glimpse into ways early Christians witnessed. Impacted?
