Twas a backyard brawl on Thursday night. I took in some high school wrestling as I watched Mounds View High School dispatch with Irondale … which are the two high schools in my school district. One is known as the sports school, the other is the band and robotics school. The sports school won 60-6. By the way, former Gopher Marty Morgan's youngest son is a 215-pounder for Mounds View and he's freaking HUGE. He's headed to South Dakota State. I was spotted in the crowd by one Mounds View parent. Was great to just watch some pretty good high school wrestling without actually working. There's some great HS wrestling kicking off today at the Walsh Ironman. Check my socials @jasonmbryant for some knowledge bombs. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. On to the scores on the college scene from Thursday. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. Only D1 dual of the night, Michigan State improved to 4-0 after a 25-9 win over Buffalo ON THE STAGE up in New York. Buffalo did one of those theatre-style duals for the third year in a row. If you look at the dual, this one was probably closer than the score indicates as Michigan State picked up three victories that were two points or less. Still been a rough start for Buffalo this year. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) knocked off 13th-ranked Northern State 21-13 out in the middle of South Dakota. The Vikings were ranked 18th in the most recent NWCA rankings, which is a tournament points ranking rather than a dual ranking. Augie's top-ranked Jaxson Rohman earned a major at 125 pounds, while top-ranked Wyatt Turnquist won 7-2 at 149 pounds for Northern State. Out west, San Francisco State shutout Simpson (Calif.) 41-0. In D3, second-ranked Wartburg rolled past the only non-Iowa team in the American Rivers Conference, which used to be the Iowa Conference. The Knights had five falls, the fastest coming at 197 pounds by top-ranked Mo Endene, the returning D3 champion at the weight in the 54-0 win. Third-ranked UW-Eau Claire rallied from down 14-3 after five weights and reeled off five straight W's to oust rival UW-Whitewater 25-14. Whitewater did pick up the dual's most notable win as ninth-ranked Dominick Mallinder bounced top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood 7-1 at 133 pounds. 20th-ranked Millikin topped Aurora 23-17. Bonus points were the difference for the Big Blue as three of the wins were bonus victories including falls by Coby Haney at 133 and Nathan Callaway at 157. Also in the CCIW, Elmhurst edged Concordia Wisconsin 24-23. Roanoke beat Shenandoah 43-4 out in my home state of Virginia. Three bonus victories were the difference for Loras as they topped Cornell College 21-19 in a matchup of Iowa schools. In the NAIA, Montana State-Northern rallied to beat Dickinson State 32-16, while No. 11 Providence (Mont.) beat Eastern Oregon 28-15. Top-ranked Hunter Sparks of Eastern Oregon got a fall in that one at 125 pounds. The Evergreen State College earned its first win, topping Grays Harbor College 50-3. Evergreen's mascot? The GEODUCKS. What is a Geoduck? Well, it's the largest burrowing clam in the world, native to the coastal waters of the Pacific. Makes sense, Evergreen is in Washington. Grays Harbor is too, just a mile or two from the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Some of you will get the reference. On the women's side, fourth ranked Colorado Mesa torched Texas Woman's University 44-5, and Adams State 45-4. UW-Stevens Point topped Wartburg 30-13 in the first home dual in school history for the new women's program at Wartburg. Minot State was a winner over Dakota Wesleyan 27-16. Evergreen's women also picked up a W, beating Grays Harbor 34-8. Shout outs to our latest Mat Talk patrons, Warrior Coach and KBnoswag. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. The Flood is honored and thrilled to be invited by Mike Murdock and Nora Ankrom to be part of their Alchemy Theater's new production of the musical, Bright Star. This evening is opening night! The show runs for the next two weekends, July 7-9, 14-16 at Huntington's new Geneva Kent Center for the Arts at 68 Holley Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m. each evening. In addition, there is one matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 9.Besides joining the wonderful Mark Smith and John Kinley in the house band, we'll also be playing a little pre-show Flood set before each performance. That starts at about 7 each night.Because railroads play a big part in the play's story line, we'll offer a traditional train song or two in our set, like this Huddle Ledbetter classic. For the backstory on Lead Belly's great old tune, see our earlier Flood Watch article:All About “Bright Star”Bright Star — which opened on Broadway in the winter of 2016 after being workshopped three years earlier by New York Stage and Film at the Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College — was written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. The story is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945–46 with flashbacks to 1923. It opens with literary editor Alice Murphy meeting a soldier just home from World War II; something about the young man awakens Alice's longing for the child she lost many years earlier. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past. What she finds has the power to transform lives throughout the community. At its debut, Bright Star received high praise from critics. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times, for instance, called it a “shining achievement.” He added, “The complicated plot, divided between two love stories that turn out to have an unusual connection, threatens to get a little too diffuse and unravel like a ball of yarn rolling off a knitter's lap. But the songs … provide a buoyancy that keeps the momentum from stalling.”Spoiler Alert: The True StoryAs Alchemy Theater's posters for the show observe, Bright Star was inspired by a true story, and we're prepared to tell you that story. However, you might not want to know these details before you see the show.So — flash! — this is your spoiler alert: If you want the story to unfold on stage, stop reading right now. After you've seen the play for yourself, you can always come back here to read the rest of the story. That story begins on an August evening in 1902 near the town of Irondale, Missouri, when a 67-year-old farmer named William Helms was walking along the railroad tracks gathering lumber for a barn he wanted to build.Along the way, he watched the No. 4 engine of the Iron Mountain Railroad cross the Big River bridge on its run to St. Louis. Just then he heard a strange sound. Following it, Helms found a suitcase on a sandbar sticking out of the river. Inside he discovered a 5-day-old baby.Having fallen 50 feet, the child was badly bruised with a pronounced dent in his head. Helms took the baby home to his wife, Sarah Jane, and together they nursed him back to health. The suitcase also contained an extra set of clothing and some black thread, but nothing to identify the child. Although the Helms were up in years and had already raised a family, the couple decided to keep the infant. They gave him a name that was as long as his tumble from that train: William Moses Gould Helms. (“William” after his new foster father, "Gould” for Jay Gould, the owner of the railroad, and "Moses," because the boy was found at the water's edge like the biblical baby.)The story of the "Iron Mountain Baby" ran in St. Louis newspapers and spread across the country that summer and fall. Many came to see the baby and some offered to adopt him. At least one lady came, dressed in black, and claimed the child was hers. From Newspapers to Folk SongThe story might have ended there, but in early 1903 a preacher named Rev. J.T. Barton wrote a ballad called "The Iron Mountain Baby,” setting it to a traditional tune ("The Blind Child's Prayer"). Barton's song mistakes certain key details — like the number of the train, even the names of the principals — but it became very popular in its day: I have a song I'd like to singIt's awful but it's trueAbout a baby, thrown from a trainBy a woman, I know not who.Th' train was running at full speedT'was northbound number nine An' as it crossed th' river's bridgeShe cast it from the door.A Mother unkind, a Father untrueAnd yet, I'm bound to sayIt must have grieved that Mother's heartTo cast her baby away. The leaves in which this baby was foundWas fourteen inches longFive inches wide, six inches deepAn', O, so closely bound. It was Bill Williams who found this babe He heard its helpless cryHe took it to his loving wife; She would not let it die.She bathed and washed its little headAn' soon, it hushed its cryGod bless them both while they liveGod bless them when they die. We'll name him William Roscoe Because he has no nameThen, if he grows to be a manHe'll wear it just th' same. This ends my song, my story I've toldI'll say, goodbye to allUntil we meet around the throneIn that bright world above all.The RecordIn the late 1940s, the story reached yet another new audience, this time when Missouri-based country music star Johnny Rion recorded Barton's song. And the real Iron Mountain baby was still alive to hear the song on the air, though it is said that William Helms never really enjoyed his peculiar fame.More Re-TellingsNonetheless, his story simply wouldn't die.In 2007, Evault Boswell of Greenville, Texas, published a novel, The Iron Mountain Baby, which imagines a young William going to St. Louis to track down his real mother. There he finds intrigue and dishonesty in high places, and, of course, romance.Meanwhile, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell visited the story even before they wrote Bright Star. It was the subject of "Sarah Jane and the Iron Mountain Baby," from their 2013 album, Love Has Come for You.Baby Bill's LifeAfter the death of his foster father, William Moses Gould Helms moved with his adoptive mother to Salem, Missouri. He attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College (his education paid for by the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway). He became a printer and sometimes-newspaper editor. In the 1930s, William and his new wife, Sally, moved to Texas, where he lived until his death in 1953.When the body was carried by rail back to Missouri for burial, it was only the second time that William ever rode a train. Today I'm breaking down the mindset and strategies to building a following on social media. I'm joined by the incredible founders of Et Alia theatre company. Et Alia is Latin for ‘And Other': they create art for the other, by the other, and about the other. They strive to foster an accepting community that provides a safe space where people can take risks, push themselves outside of their comfort zones and collide with an array of international voices which may be culturally unfamiliar. Et Alia's most recent projects include White Rabbit Red Rabbit by Nassim Soleimanpour (in association with Aurora Nova) and This is Me Eating___, an online video series turned documentary that deals with food, eating and body image. The documentary got accepted to multiple festivals, such as the NYC Indie Theatre Film Festival, Irondale's On Women Festival - the New Media Storytelling section and the Essence of Embodiment Film Festival. Et Alia was also invited to be part of TEDxYouth@Columbia's conference that happened at the end of March and had the theme Borderline Boundless. The Spirit of Twilight pushes through mists that hide the Dagger Isles from the rest of the Imperium. Blind as they are, they fall hopelessly into the trap of one of the deathlands' many spirits- but a third party intervenes! A devilish figure with a Harlequin mask; but ultimately is she friend or foe? Days later, a journalist comes to write a review of the Pride of Duskwall on a trip full of particularly important passengers. Pippin conspires with a criminal. Drix hides from an old enemy. Despite its moniker, the spirit is no ghost, but a locomotive of the Imperial Railways. The people of the Dagger Isles have no need for the train's lightning oil, though their secrets of survival are clouded by the obscuring miasma. Apprehensive in the mist, three Line Bulls stand atop the locomotive to shepherd its freight safely to Irondale from the remote city of Mistport. They circle around the fourth Bull, who has experienced too much on this trip. His mind is shattered, and he will retire if he survives this line. A hidden vouyer watches as a specter emerges from the mist to finish them off, and their posture tenses as she prepares to intervene. Greg 0:43 Jolene, do you recognize anything about this spirit? Jolene 0:47 Yeah, I think, I think this spirit has, like, a longer cloak with, with an insignia. Probably some old industrial company - Greg 0:57 Yes, yes. Jolene 0:58

A duergar shield wall? Like nothing any of them have seen before, the party don't know how to handle it. As they try to sneak farther into Irondale, they must figure out how to deal with the wall and remain undetected in the city.
It seems like almost yesterday that one of the great legends of Southeast Missouri was born. On the afternoon of August 14, 1902, William Helms, a farmer near Hopewell, Missouri stopped to water his horse in a stream under a railroad trestle near Irondale. As he turned to leave he heard the muffled cry of a child. To his great surprise he found the sound coming from a suitcase that was on the river’s bank at the water’s edge. Inside the suitcase he found a baby boy with an extra set of clothes and a spool of black thread. The 72 year old Helms quickly took the baby home to his wife, Sarah, who tenderly cared for the infant who they concluded had he been stuffed into the suitcase and deliberately thrown from an Iron Mountain Train as it passed over the river. The suitcase had landed on the bank, its fall broken by some bushes, and was found by Mr. Helms. Sarah named the youngster William Moses Gould Helms: William for the man who found him, Moses due to his being found by the river,

In this conversation, we go with Carrie in a journey through her cultivation of resiliency and synthesis, how she became fascinated with experimental movement, movement analisis and Iyengar Yoga, and the way her work evolved from there. We discussed her relationship with the Iyengar Yoga system, the assessment process in Iyengar Yoga, the vast complexities of the guru-based lineage, the intense, abusive and traumatic experiences that people went through studying in Pune with the Iyengar family, and how they were handled and digested by her and other people in the Iyengar community. We talked about the importance of giving people permission to explore movement to gain autonomy in their body, instead of following an external authority, and how her Yoga teaching style has evolved primarily in this direction. She also reflects on how much change she has noticed in her students across the world, and how social media and information have increased and intensify this change. Carrie Owerko has been teaching yoga and exploring the relationship between body, breath, and mind for several years. She holds a Senior Intermediate Iyengar teaching credential, is a certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist (FRCms). Before studying yoga, Carrie earned a BFA in Dance and Theater, and graduated from the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse Theater School in NYC. Carrie then spent several years working for a Movement/Educational/Experimental Theater Company called The Irondale Ensemble Project. In addition to performing with Irondale she taught in the Alternative High Schools in NYC and at Rikers Island Correctional Facility. After Irondale, Carrie continued her inquiry and became a Movement Analyst (CMA) having completed her studies at The Laban Institute in NYC. She has spent years enthusiastically exploring human movement with the intention of helping people develop clearer, more fully embodied communication and expression. Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN)Paul MacAree Associate Producer with EWTN Ireland tells us the story of Mother Angelica and her creation of the largest religious Radio & TV station in the world with a viewing of over 240 million worldwide 24/7.When Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) was launched on August 15, 1981, many felt there would be little demand for a Catholic network. Now, in its 33rd year, EWTN has become the largest religious media network in the world, transmitting programming 24 hours a day to more than 230 million homes in 144 countries and territories on more than 4,800 cable systems, wireless cable, Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), low power TV and individual satellite users.EWTN Global Catholic Network airs family and religious programming from a Catholic point of view in English and Spanish. Providing more than 80% original programming, EWTN offers inspiring talk shows, entertaining children's animation, exclusive teaching series, live coverage of Church events, and thought-provoking documentaries.Beyond the broadcast vision, however, first and foremost, the spiritual heart of the EWTN mission is to bring the Eternal Word, Jesus Christ, to all. The religious centers of the network are visited daily by pilgrims who travel to Irondale to worship in the chapel or visit the breathtakingly beautiful Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. Visitors of all faiths are invited to "come away by yourself to a quiet place, and rest awhile" (Mark 6:31) and to pray before the Most Blessed Sacrament, adored and loved perpetually by the cloistered nuns now living at Our Lady of Angels Monastery in Hanceville or by the faithful in Irondale.Without making plans for the future, Mother Angelica, relying completely on Divine Providence, believes in going "where God opens the door." It is that deep and constant faith in the Lord, which has called Mother Angelica to act on God's invitation to do the impossible, through Him, who accomplishes the miraculous.
This week's offers something of a hodge-podge, centered around the theme of out-and-about town. We start with the Birmingham Dance Walk event organized by Sherri Ross. Last Sunday, March 20 I hung out at Railroad Park for a while to be a part of the first Birmingham Dance Walk of 2016. It was the Dance Walk that inspired this episode to share some sound bites about what makes Birmingham Shine and to let you know about a few events coming up over the next few weeks. All of these events and festivities are in Birmingham, except for one. That one is a camping-and-yoga trip for women that some of my Shoals friends are doing at Cane Creek Canyon near Muscle Shoals. If that’s something you’re interested in, listen through to the end because there’s a registration deadline looming. When I started Birmingham Shines last year, I went out in April to Pepper Place Market to gather some sound bites from folks about what makes Birmingham Shine. You heard from two of those in the teaser: Preston and Eric. Thanks to you two guys for sharing your thoughts on what makes Birmingham Shine! One of the things I discovered that weekend in April of 2015, just before I launched the podcast is that folks are shy around microphones, even when there’s no camera involved. I had a bit more success at this year's Birmingham Dance Walk. First we’re going to hear from Sherri Ross, founder of Birmingham Dance Walk and her hubby, Daniel Walters. They give us some info about Dance Walk and Daniel also talks a bit about living downtown. Then we hear from Trudy Bezet about what she loves about Birmingham. After Trudy, we hear from Panama Jack You Up of the Tragic City Rollers about their next roller derby meet at the Zamora Shrine Temple in Irondale. Then we have Laura Gaines talking about the Sol Dance Experience for women. She's followed by Jennifer King, who has the blog Stellar Fashion and Fitness, gives the heads-up on an upcoming free 5K on April 2. After that, my friends Summer and Ashley share a bit about the camping and yoga trip set for April 9-10 at Cane Creek Canyon near Muscle Shoals. You can still register as of March 24, 2016, but you’re running out of time. If you’re interested and don’t have time to listen, you can find out more at ashleybakeryoga.com. This is an excerpt from a full interview available in the Discover Grow Shinecast. After the Summer and Ashley excerpt, I have a short promo from Michael Syms about Zyp Bikeshare and close it out with a another bit of sound from Ben of Jones Valley Teaching Farm, recorded in April 2015 at Pepper Place. Promotional Disclosure: At the time I recorded the full interview with Summer and Ashley for the Discover Grow Shinecast (available at http://shinecast.tv) I had not received any promotional consideration from them. During the week of March 20, however, I was asked if I would like to receive a discount to attend the April 9-10 yoga and camping outing at Cane Creek and I said yes. So, at the time of THIS episode, I have received something of value from these guests and want to disclose that to make sure I'm in compliance with FTC rules for bloggers and podcasters. Teddy Zane, owner of Flex Fitness in Irondale, is the guest on episode 31 of Birmingham Shines. Health and fitness starts with food. “You can’t outtrain a bad diet,” Zane says. Teddy is an ACE certified trainer. Bodybuilding Awards include:--Mr. New York--Teen Mr. Upstate New York Flex Fitness is an awesome gym in Irondale, a suburb of Birmingam, with 24/7 access. Flex Fitness offers a full range of cardio workout machines, as well as multiple varieties of circuit training machines. There's a full floor of free-weights for the hard-core bodybuilders, but Flex Fitness really emphasizes fitness for everyone. In this week's episode we talk about nutrition, designing a workout regimen and more. Here are some highlights: Some folks don’t get the results they want because they quit too soon when they don’t get the results fast enough. Patience is a key and you also have to pay attention to what you’re eating. Most of us can’t get all the vitamins, minerals, amino acids that we need, even if we’re eating reasonably well. So it’s not just about what you’re will to give up and a commitment to eating the right combinations and quantities. You also have to pay attention to the quality of the food you’re taking in. Industrially-produced poultry and beef, farmed fish, these receive food that’s largely corn-based. As a result, you don’t get the Omega 3 fatty acids and other benefits of grassfed, pastured livestock. Teddy recommends intermittent fasting to help detox body and restore gut health. This is not the solution for someone with a medical condition, but for a normal healthy person intermittent fasting can be an excellent tool for restoring colonic health and intestinal function. With intermittent fasting, you go 12 hours, usually overnight, with no food intake to give your digestive system a rest. Drink a lot of water, especially in the morning after, to help flush out toxins. Food and fitness are the fountain of youth. Not sure where to start, if you aren't already on a fitness plan.....Teddy offers these tips: Set a goal. Identify your goal and a reason to achieve it. If you can’t manage your self-discipline, get a trainer. Not mandatory if you can stay committed to your plan, but a trainer is great to keep you motivated. Ask people in great shape to help you. It’s better to talk to a real person--even a friend who’s knowledgeable--rather than just going to YouTube or a website for motivation. Be consistent. Don’t be sporadic. Your body adapts quickly, so you want to keep moving forward. Bodybuilding is for the extreme-fit enthusiast. Most people just want to focus on cardio to get rid of stored body fat. A key to maximize fat-burning is to work out on an empty stomach and you must get your heart rate up (more on that shortly). Drink lots of water. Take a branch-chain amino acid supplement before your cardio workout. Branch chain amino acids usually come in powder form. Take before the workout, on empty stomach, to preserve muscle and burn fat. For strength-training, want to have a couple of meals in the day before your strength workout. Ideally, do your cardio early, on an empty stomach. Make sure you get your heart rate up to the right level, based on age. A heart rate monitor is crucial for making sure you hit the right threshold in cardio to burn fat. Then have 2 meals before strength training. Do your strength 2 p.m. or later, after you’ve had good nutrition. Flex Fitness is located on Crestwood Blvd. in Irondale. Irondale is (as some of you may know) the hometown of the Irondale Cafe, which inspired The Whistlestop Cafe in Fannie Flagg’s book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe. “The Elephant's Child” is a tale from Africa, adapted from Rudyard Kipling's mangled English version in “Just So Stories”. It's one of various and sundry animal fables from various and sundry cultures explaining how various and sundry animals ended up with various and sundry unique physical features. We come to you from Birmingham, AL., where we are touring to present performances at the Emmet O'Neal Library in the Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook. While searching for a geocache in the suburb of Irondale, we stumbled upon the landmark Irondale Cafe, otherwise known as Fried Green Tomatoes. Actress/novelist Fannie Flagg used to eat here as a child – her aunt once owned the place – and it inspired her to write the best-selling novel “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe”, which was made into the popular movie “Fried Green Tomatoes”. Naturally, we had to return for lunch. The options are limited for vegetarians, and as is often the case with Southern cuisine, everything is smothered in grease. But all in all it wasn't bad; authentic Southern cornbread is a delicacy you just can't get anywhere else. And the signature dish?
