Last Summer, MGL shared a very exciting secret with me. A year on, it is with no small amount of delight that I can now finally cease my silence! In Maya's words:“I have written a book about Portly the Otter, son of Otter from The Wind in the Willows. It is modelled on Kenneth Grahame's original, as a series of riverbank stories, and features characters we all know and love, as well as introducing you to some new ones. The book is called The Adventures of Portly the Otter - Untold Tales from The Wind in the Willows and will answer a mystery I wondered about a lot as a child, which is - what really happened to Portly for him to be missing for so long, and end up - discovered by Ratty and Moley,- curled up between the cloven hooves of the god Pan? The book is illustrated by the fabulous Polly Dunbar and will be printed as a four colour hardback gift book in March 2026 by Farshore. I cannot tell you what a joy it has been to revisit the riverbank and spend time with the much beloved Ratty, Moley, Badger, and of course the mischievous Mr Toad, but the biggest delight of all has been spending a year researching and learning about otters.” Hosted on Acast. There are a few things everyone seems to believe about the layout of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride--but none of them are true. On this episode of Distory, we're merrily on our way to nowhere in particular to understand the English countryside in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in a greater historical context. After we encounter a few bobbies (and discuss their manners and wardrobe), we dig deep into the context of Wind in the Willows and how it inspired the art we see for Ratty's House. As we fly around the corner toward the farmer and his sheep, Kate gets on her soapbox and debunks one of the biggest lies ever told about Mr. Toad. Kirk shares some portside foreshadowing, Kate explains why the Tower Bridge is included in this attraction, Kirk sings some AC/DC, and Kate gets nerdy with typography as this episode goes out with a bang. Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app

Our guest today is Alan Myers. Alan Myers is a San Diego CPA and forensic accountant. For over a decade, he has dedicated himself to researching, studying and analyzing the Federal Reserve System, banking and the national debt. 1) Federal ownership of land. Some call it a Federal land grab - what is it and why should citizens be concerned about it? States are the parents, they created the Constitution, ratified the Constitution and it is the Constitution which brought into existence the federal government, the child. The child is to do only what it has been told to do or can do, nothing more. Article I, Section 8, Clause 17 of the U.S. Constitution Total land in the U.S. is 2,271,343,360 acres, of which, federal government owns 615,311,602 acres or 27% of total land in the U.S. The 12 States with the most federal government land owned are, in order, Nevada (80%), Utah (63%), Idaho (61.9%), Alaska (60.9%), Oregon (52%), Wyoming (46.7%), California (45.4%), Arizona (38.6%), Colorado (36.2%), New Mexico (31.7%), Montana (29%) and Washington (28.5%). Note each State is West of the Mississippi. My understanding is that the federal government does not pay property taxes to any State. With land that was taken by the federal government in a manner that exceeded its Constitutional power, the State would now be in the position to benefit from such a return. The land could be leased, rented or sold which would generate funds for the State and provide additional future funds from the collection of property taxes. 2) The 2ND Amendment. Is it a gift, a duty, or both? Arms includes guns, swords, spears, arrows, clubs, axes and shields that would be used in defense or attack. Also note that the word arms comes from the Latin word arma which means weapons. The 2nd Amendment is one hell of a gift that enables practically all of us to be able to Protect and Defend our State's Freedom from an evil, overreaching central government. However, the 2nd Amendment is more than just a gift. It speaks of a Duty that we owe to each other and the Constitution! What did Jefferson say, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." 3) How do people follow you? Saturdays, 1-3pm pst, KMET 1490AM with Doug Gibbs, Mr. Constitution and Sundays, 5-7pm pst, on Patriots Soapbox Channel, my show, For The Republic.

A Reading Life, A Writing Life, with Sally Bayley

Sally does her washing on the narrowboat, and with spring in the air, her thoughts turn to the past. She reads from an old favourite, the children's classic novel, The Wind in the Willows, and discusses its characters and themes with her friend from next door, Maeve Magnus, who is reading it for the first time and sees close parallels between the book and their own lives on the river. Sally recalls her fierce search for meaning and direction of her university days, and how she plunged into the writings of the American scholar Camille Paglia; then she reads an illuminating passage written by a former student, the writer, art critic and academic, Rebecca Birrell. Sally ends by reflecting on her desire for privacy and space, and the adoption of literary and artistic personae, reaching back to the masks worn by actors in ancient Greece. The Wind in the Willows is a children's novel by the Scottish novelist Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. It details the story of Mole, Ratty, and Badger as they try to help the excitable, impetuous, swaggering, but hapless Mr Toad. The novel was based on bedtime stories which Grahame, a successful banker and financier, told his seven-year-old son. The book's impressionistic descriptions of the English countryside and its mythic search for moments of grace have made it an enduring read for adults as well as children; while the setting of the book partly drew on the author's experiences of living beside the River Thames, south of Oxford - not too far from where Sally and Maeve now live. Grahame died in 1932 and lies buried in Oxford's Holywell Cemetery. Sexual Personae: Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson, which Sally read avidly at university, is a 1990 book about sexual decadence in Western literature and the visual arts by scholar Camille Paglia. The novel draws on the conflicts of Greek drama and demonstrates their continued relevance in its comprehensive study of Western art and literature, from Botticelli and Leonardo daVinci to Shakespeare, Goethe, Coleridge, Emily Brontë and Oscar Wilde. This Dark Country: Women Artists, Still Life and Intimacy in the Early Twentieth Century by Dr Rebecca Birrell is published by Bloomsbury Circus. It is both biography and art critcism of 10 female artists, including Dora Carrington, Vanessa Bell and Gwen John. It was the Guardian Art Book of the Year and shortlisted for a number of other prestigious awards.
