In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Lindsey Elmore exposes the chaos unfolding in the UK as Mounjaro (weight loss/diabetes medication) prices skyrocket 170% overnight—jumping from £92 to £330 per month. Discover how Eli Lilly's "European price matching" triggered panic buying, crashed pharmacy websites, and left patients spending over £1,000 to stockpile medications. Lindsey examines the real-world impact, even in the U.S.: supply shortages, hoarding behaviors, and the unfair advantage given to those who can afford to bulk-buy versus patients with genuine medical needs. In this solo episode, Lindsey dives into the world of peptide injections, with a focus on the controversial “Wolverine shot” (BPC-157). She explores what peptides are, why they're trending in gyms, wellness clinics, and med spas, and how they're marketed for muscle gain, fat loss, recovery, and anti-aging.Lindsey discusses the science (and lack thereof), FDA concerns, and potential risks like overdosing, contamination, and unregulated use. She closes by reminding listeners that while peptides are intriguing, true health and longevity still come from foundational practices—quality sleep, nutrition, strength training, and meaningful human connection. Listen in to learn more : 01:03 – Why People Use PeptidesClaimed benefits include lean muscle gain, faster recovery, testosterone support, fat loss, and anti-aging. However, the evidence base is thin.01:18 – BPC-157 and Other PeptidesBPC-157: derived from stomach peptides, believed to speed up tissue healing and reduce inflammation.Tesamorelin: studied for HIV-related fat reduction.Sermorelin: targeted for sleep and recovery.CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin: growth hormone–related stacks are popular among bodybuilders.02:28 – Lack of Scientific EvidenceMost data comes from animal studies or small trials, not significant human clinical research.03:55 – FDA ConcernsThe FDA flagged four peptides in 2022; that number jumped to 26 by the end of 2023, showing rapid regulatory scrutiny.04:42 – Anecdotal Use by Doctors and CEOsSome report success with peptides like BPC-157 for injuries, but even they acknowledge the lack of robust science.05:35 – Risks of Overuse and ContaminationOverdosing risks: especially when combining peptides with testosterone, leading to organ enlargement.Contamination/mislabeling: Many peptides sold are unregulated, increasing health risks.06:15 – Back to Basics for LongevityDespite the hype, proven health strategies remain the same: sleep, exercise, protein, reducing sugar, strength training, and social connection.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lindsey-elmore-show--5952903/support.

Licensed therapist Rachel Elmore discovered this gap firsthand when she experienced postpartum depression after her first child's birth, despite her professional expertise. When established treatment resources failed her, Rachel created what became the foundation for her groundbreaking book "A Mom is Born" – the first postpartum resource written from both clinical and Christian perspectives by someone who lived through it. This conversation explores the comprehensive New Mom Wellness Plan that has helped thousands of women navigate early motherhood with grace and support.Rachel unpacks the practical wisdom behind creating a "postpartum pack" . Why accepting help isn't a burden but actually a gift to those who care, and how this vulnerability often leads to deeper, more meaningful relationships. Everything from handling meal trains and managing household responsibilities to navigating the significant hormonal shifts that occur even when weaning from breastfeeding. For those supporting new mothers, Rachel offers insight into creating truly welcoming spaces that accommodate both mother and baby needs. Most importantly, Rachel shares the perspective every struggling mother needs: "Bad moms don't worry about being bad moms. Good moms do that." The very act of worrying about your parenting indicates you're already on the right track.Whether you're a new parent, supporting someone who is, or preparing for future parenthood, this conversation provides the honest, compassionate guidance we all wish came standard with every baby shower invitation. Send us a textIn this powerful conversation, Hannah Elmore, Senior Clinical Outreach Coordinator for the IAFF Center of Excellence, reveals the critical role of culturally competent care in supporting firefighter mental health. Drawing from her extensive background in clinical social work and deep immersion in fire service culture, Hannah illuminates the often-overlooked nuances of how mental health challenges uniquely manifest in first responders. The discussion takes us behind the curtain of the IAFF Center of Excellence, a specialized treatment facility created specifically for firefighters seeking help with behavioral health challenges. Unlike traditional hospital settings, this 15-acre facility offers various levels of care in an environment where firefighters can heal among peers who truly understand their experiences. Hannah paints a vivid picture of the Center's approach, from clinical programming to the nightly gatherings around the fire pit—a space intentionally kept free from clinical staff where some of the deepest healing occurs.Perhaps most compelling is the honest examination of barriers that prevent firefighters from seeking help. Hannah addresses head-on the fears about confidentiality and career impact that keep many suffering in silence. "If you're sweeping things under the rug," she cautions, "eventually the rug is going to get a really big mountain that you're going to trip over." This metaphor perfectly captures the cumulative weight of unaddressed trauma and stress.Steve and Hannah also discuss the frustrating reality of therapists who lack the necessary understanding of first responder culture. They share stories of firefighters who've had negative experiences with providers who were overwhelmed by their trauma narratives or misinterpreted symptoms due to cultural ignorance. Their passion for connecting first responders with appropriate, vetted resources shines through as they emphasize their collaborative approach to resource sharing.Whether you're a firefighter struggling with your mental health, a peer support member looking to better assist your colleagues, or a clinician wanting to better serve the first responder community, this episode offers invaluable insights into creating pathways to healing. "The writer has to have patience, the perseverance to just sit there alone and grind it out. And if that's not worth doing," Leonard said, "then he doesn't want to write." Leonard wanted to write from a young age, and write he did, first producing western stories and western novels before moving toward the crime novels that made his reputation. His is the career of a working writer the likes we don't see much of anymore. About COOLER THAN COOL, Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry writes that "If you love Elmore Leonard-and who doesn't?-you'll love this fascinating, richly detailed account of how one of our greatest storytellers lived his life and learned his craft."Over the course of his sixty-year career, Elmore Leonard published forty-five novels that had enduring appeal to readers around the world. Revered by other writers such as Martin Amis, Margaret Atwood, Raymond Carver, and Stephen King, his books were innovative in their blending of a Hemingway-inspired noirish minimalism and masterful use of dialogue over exposition-a direct evolution spurred by his years as a screenwriter. When C. M. Kushins was fifteen he worked up his courage and wrote a fan letter to Elmore and included one of his own short stories. Elmore proofread it and wrote an encouraging letter back. Years later, Kushins finally got a short story published and Elmore sent him a congratulatory note. When he first started thinking about writing this book, Kushins went nosing around the University of South Carolina archives-and found his own letters going back to when he was fifteen. Elmore had saved all their correspondence. It was this story that helped him get the Leonard family on board with the book. Indeed, the Leonard family has fully participated, contributing original interviews, additional personal correspondence, exclusive photographs, as well as access to Leonard's unfinished final novel. The biography also includes unpublished, loose memoir excerpts. These are included here for the first time to illuminate key passages of importance throughout Leonard's life in his own words.Leonard's fiction contained many layers, and at the heart of his work were progressive themes, stemming from his years as a student of the Jesuit religious order, his personal beliefs in social justice, and his successful battle over alcoholism. He drew inspiration from greats like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, but the true motivation and brilliance behind his crime writing was the ongoing class struggle to achieve the American Dream-often seen through the eyes of law enforcement officers and the criminals they vowed to apprehend.COOLER THAN COOL is not just a biography for fans of Leonard's fiction. His is work was also the source material for many movies including 3:10 to Yuma, Hombre, Jackie Brown, Get Shorty, Out of Sight-as well as the TV series Justified-and influenced American filmmaking, especially the western and crime genres.Definitive and revealing, COOLER THAN COOL shows Leonard emerging as one of the last writers of the "pulp fiction" era of midcentury America, to ultimately become one of the most successful storytellers of the twentieth century, whose influence continues to have far-reaching effects on both contemporary crime fiction and American filmmaking. One more thing: 2025 also marks Elmore Leonard's centennial. In September, Mariner Books will bring a never-published novella by the author, Picket Line, with an introduction by Kushins, timed to Leonard's October birthday.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Our guest today is Phyllis Elmore, a remarkable woman whose story is as unforgettable as the quilts that helped shape her life.Phyllis is the author of Quilt of Souls, a powerful and deeply personal memoir that has touched readers across the country. Born in the Detroit and raised by her grandmother Lula in rural Alabama, Phyllis found herself immersed in a world of deep wisdom, quiet strength, and generational resilience. It was there, surrounded by women who stitched their pain, perseverance, and history into quilts, that Phyllis discovered healing—and the true meaning of family. In 1973, Phyllis joined the United States Air Force and was one of the first female Aircraft Pneudraulic Specialist for the B-52 Bomber. After leaving the Air Force she attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.  In 2001, she joined the Army National Guard as an active-duty guard member. It's also noteworthy to mention that Phyllis was one of only a handful of women in the military who served in three major military conflicts including the Vietnam Era where she served a temporary duty assignment to Vietnam before the 1975 fall of Saigon.  She was also deployed to Saudi Arabia as a member of Operation Desert Storm, and in December 2003 as a member of the Army National Guard where she was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In her civilian career she worked as a counselor for incarcerated youth and for women who were victims of domestic violence. She also spent ten years as a Substance Abuse Counseling Supervisor. In her remarkable book Quilt of Souls, Phyllis shares stories that were nearly lost stories of the Black women who raised children not theirs, who held families together through hardship, and who passed down their heritage through hands that stitched, cooked, comforted, and carried so much. Her writing is rich, lyrical, and full of love—an act of remembrance and a celebration of the strength it takes to keep going, and to keep telling the truth.(3:11) Phyllis recounts being uprooted from Detroit at age four and sent to rural Alabama to live with her grandmother, Lula. She describes the powerful emotional refuge of Lula's quilts—especially one that made her feel truly safe for the first time.(8:03) We get to know Grandmother Lula, an indomitable force who stitched not only quilts but entire communities together. Lula lived to be 105 years old and was threading a needle at 100.(15:55) Phyllis reflects on her return to Detroit as a teen, where she was labeled “incorrigible”—and how those experiences shaped her decision to join the U.S. Air Force.(23:57) After her military service, Phyllis worked as a counselor for incarcerated youth and women facing domestic abuse. Hear how she channeled her life experiences into serving others.(27:30) What inspired Quilt of Souls? Phyllis shares the moment she realized that the stories she carried could—and should—be written down.(30:39) She recalls a particularly poignant story unearthed during her research—one that stuck with her and shaped the book's message.(34:27) Meet Miss Jubilee and hear about the extraordinary quilts and lives Phyllis encountered while researching her memoir.(40:43) Discover the Quilt of Souls Preservation Project and get a preview of Phyllis' upcoming Quilt of Souls Gathering in June 2026.(46:15) Phyllis reveals what she hopes readers take away from Quilt of Souls—and why she believes it's never too late to “right” your story.(51:00) What didn't we ask that she wishes we had? Flash Flooding Strikes Northeastern Pennsylvania: Inside Luzerne County's Response

Severe flash flooding earlier this month swept across parts of Northeastern Pennsylvania, leaving communities in Luzerne, Lycoming, and Columbia counties scrambling to respond to quickly rising waters and damaged infrastructure. The deluge, which began around 2:30 a.m. on July 14, caused significant disruptions in areas such as Kingston Borough, Harveys Lake, and West Nanticoke—longtime hot spots for flooding. Luzerne County Deputy Director of Emergency Services David Elmore joined The Spark to walk us through what unfolded that morning and how the county responded. “We started receiving reports from Butler Township, Fairmont Township, Ross Township, and parts of Wilkes-Barre City,” said Elmore. “Most of it was caused by a large amount of rain in a small period of time.” One of the hardest-hit areas was Fairmount Township, where water overflowed from Lake Jean in Ricketts Glen State Park, surged down the mountainside, and inundated Route 118. The result: overwhelmed culverts, damaged roadways, and debris flowing into residential yards. Despite the intensity of the flooding, widespread evacuations were largely avoided. A few residents from summer cottages in Patterson Grove required assistance when water blocked road access, but most remained safely in their homes. “It was mostly roadways affecting the flow of traffic,” Elmore said. “The water recedes fast—that’s the key. It’s flash flooding. Water comes down, and it recedes quite quickly.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Music Studio Startup: Helping music teachers thrive as entrepreneurs

Welcome back! We're doing a special series on the podcast this summer called Studio Snapshots. Rather than the in-depth, process-oriented interviews you're used to hearing, these rapid-fire interviews give us a glimpse in a guest's studio at a moment in time.  They're part reflection, part anticipation of the future, and fully a celebration of where these teachers are today. Today I'm talking to Amy Elmore.  A full transcript and resources from this episode can be found at MusicStudioStartup.com/snapshot038.   Music Studio Business Building 101: Summer 2025 cohort happening now! The way Phyllis Biffle Elmore feels about the quilt that her Grandmother Lula gave her is how I think many quilters hope others feel when we give them a quilt.  With significant history and mesmerizing storytelling Phyllis has written Quilt of Souls transforming oral tradition into a beautifully written document, powerfully presented and preserved for posterity.  She stitches together true tales of racism, sexism, and colorism, but also strength and pride, creating a multigenerational patchwork honoring her family and ancestors. This is the quilt that Phyllis' Grandmother Lula made for Phyllis and a picture of Lula Horn. This was the last quilt that Phyllis' Grandmother Lula made when she was over 100 years old And this quilt Phyllis calls it Smokey Quilt.  It was in a fire but wasn't destroyed. In September, Mariner Books will bring a never-published novella by the author, Picket Line, with an introduction by Kushins, timed to Leonard's October birthday.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
