James and Mark are joined by Dr. Dwayne Elmore, Gamebird Program Director at Tall Timbers, for a deep dive into the vital role of thermal ecology in gamebird management—particularly for quail. Dr. Elmore explains how temperature shapes bird behavior, habitat selection, and the critical value of shrub cover in providing thermal refuge.   The conversation highlights the need for more research on thermal conditions and their implications for wildlife management, especially in the Southeast. Key insights include the variability of operative temperatures across different cover types and how this influences quail management strategies.   The episode also explores nest site selection and how environmental factors like temperature and airflow affect reproductive success. Dr. Elmore discusses the role of vegetation in predator avoidance and the interaction between hunting pressure and bird behavior. The conversation concludes with discussions of ongoing quail restoration efforts and the increasing interest in wildlife management among hunters.

Americans, we need your help to stop a dangerous AI bill from passing the Senate. What's going on? The House Energy & Commerce Committee included a provision in its reconciliation bill that would ban AI regulation by state and local governments for the next 10 years. Several states have led the way in AI regulation while Congress has dragged its heels. If this provision passes the Senate, we could see a DECADE of inaction on AI. This provision also violates the Byrd Rule, a Senate rule which is meant to prevent non-budget items from being included in the reconciliation bill. What can I do? Thanks for tuning in to another episode of By Their Side, friends. I am joined today by the great Gaelin Elmore, former NFL player and current passionate advocate for youth facing adversity. As a child, Gaelin was very much a part of the foster system, but his experience, while inspiring because of how he overcame such challenges, was not a happy one. Listen as Gaelin reflects on his journey through foster care and how he discovered an incredibly important truth, that belonging is the key to surviving and thriving. Gaelin reflects on how the concept of belonging changed his life, turning difficult situations into opportunities to grow, and he talks about a pivotal moment with his high school coach, who showed him the power of community and brotherhood at a time when Gaelin was ready to give up. That experience of his, along with the many others who supported him along the way, helped him realize that we all play a role in creating places of belonging. Throughout our conversation, Gaelin also discusses how this fundamental human need can truly change lives, encouraging us to look at our own lives and see how we can show up for others, whether we know their story or not. For anyone struggling with a sense of belonging, Gaelin Elmore offers practical advice on how to begin the necessary work to embrace who we are and seek places where we can truly be ourselves. This episode is a reminder that change is a journey, and small, consistent actions can have lasting impacts! Highlights: [1:55] - Gaelin's childhood was unstable, but he now uses his story to help others. [4:38] - Belonging has shaped Gaelin's life, making hardships bearable. [6:26] - Hear how Gaelin's understanding of belonging has grown over time. [9:41] - Belonging is often overlooked, urging reflection on those who provide it. [10:16] - Gaelin credits his high school coach for teaching him the importance of belonging and community. [12:30] - Gaelin's coach's support came at the right time, aided by others' earlier help. [15:43] - Even just small acts of support accumulate over time, contributing to significant long-term change. [16:36] - Noting that change is gradual and often unnoticed, Gaelin compares his growth to TV show character, Jamie Tartt. [19:20] - It's important to create inclusive spaces by showing kindness and commitment to all. [21:56] - True belonging is about being yourself in spaces where others can also be themselves. [26:40] - Gaelin embraces his strengths and challenges, creating honest connections without blaming himself when rejected. [28:58] - Internal work helps Gaelin separate his worth from relationships, recognizing when he truly belongs. [30:25] - Gaelin argues that acceptance of ourselves allows us to show up fully in relationships, embracing imperfections and insecurities. [32:05] - Consistently investing in others helps them recognize their value, even if they don't immediately recognize it. [35:07] - People who are used to positive reinforcement show up differently, but some others need help learning to receive it. [37:22] - Gaelin's coach's patience and commitment ultimately helped him feel seen and supported. [39:38] - Hear how a meaningful conversation with his coach led Gaelin to trust, growth, and a stronger relationship. [41:10] - Giving agency in relationships can be so powerful.

A Stanford graduate, she first competed in the 1500 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and then made a remarkable transition to the marathon—placing 9th at the 2021 Tokyo Games and representing Canada again in Paris last summer, a full 20 years after her Olympic debut! At nearly 45 years of age and living in Kelowna, BC, with her husband, Graham, and their two young boys, Malindi continues to train and compete at the highest level while coaching athletes and winning national titles.Leanne was first on the show in the fall of 2023, where we talked about navigating injuries with grace. As a sub-elite distance runner, she's faced her fair share of setbacks, which led her and Malindi to take a fresh approach to her Houston Marathon buildup. Instead of prioritizing high mileage and grueling long runs, they focused on a less-is-more strategy—emphasizing smart training, recovery, and strength work. The results were nothing short of incredible. Leanne not only felt stronger than ever in training, but she also took a massive two minutes off her personal best, running 2:40:52 in tough weather conditions. As endurance athletes, we often fall into the trap of thinking more is always better—but what if real breakthroughs happen by training smarter, not harder? Whether you're a recreational runner or competing at an elite level, this is the kind of story that deserves more attention.Connect with Leanne:Inspired Soles Interview: Navigating Injuries With GraceInstagram: @leanneklassen7Connect with Malindi:Website: malindielmore.comInstagram: @malindielmoreConnect with Carolyn:Instagram: @inspiredsolescast or @carolyn.c.coffinYou can help spread the running love! In this episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, host Ginny Yurich sits down with leadership expert and bestselling author Tim Elmore to explore a startling reality: today's kids are drowning in information but starving for firsthand experience. As adolescence stretches longer than ever—sometimes into the late 20s—young people are overexposed to knowledge before they're ready but underexposed to real-world challenges until it's too late. Elmore unpacks why this shift is happening and how overprotection, prescriptive parenting, and risk aversion are leaving kids unprepared for adulthood. With decades of experience developing young leaders, Elmore offers solutions for reversing this trend—starting with allowing kids to face real challenges, take meaningful risks, and develop the social and emotional resilience they'll need in life. He explains why protecting kids from discomfort today can lead to greater harm tomorrow and why true preparation means letting them fail, struggle, and grow. He is the editor of Fiction and the Sixth Mass Extinction: Narrative in an Era of Loss (Lexington) and co-author of An Introduction to African and Afro-Diasporic Peoples and Influences in British Literature and Culture before the Industrial Revolution (ALG).
