Welcome to another insightful episode of Build a Better Agency! This week, host Drew McLellan is joined by Matt Davies and Pieter-Paul von Weiler, the strategist duo behind the Better Briefs Project, to tackle one of the most persistent and frustrating challenges agencies face: the elusive art of creating a truly effective brief. If you've ever struggled with unclear objectives, misaligned expectations, or wasted rounds of creative development, this episode is packed with data-driven answers and practical solutions. Drawing on global research from over 1,700 marketers and agency professionals across 70 countries, Matt and Pieter-Paul share eye-opening findings about the wide gap between what clients think they're delivering in a brief and what agencies are actually receiving. They break down the staggering disconnect—like the fact that 78% of marketers believe their briefs offer clear strategic direction, while only 5% of agencies agree—and explore the ripple effect this misalignment has on wasted budgets, morale, and creative outcomes. Drew leads a discussion on why so many briefs fall short, what really constitutes a great brief, and how both agencies and clients can step up to improve the process. You'll hear actionable advice on teaching clients the value of a well-crafted brief, initiating honest conversations before a live project starts, and creating custom templates that actually work for both sides. Plus, Matt and Pieter-Paul draw on their extensive agency experience to explain the difference between client briefs and creative briefs, and how agencies can strategically refine incoming briefs for stronger creative results.  Whether you're an agency owner, account executive, or creative lead, don't miss this episode if you're ready to reclaim lost time, reduce budget waste, and build stronger partnerships with your clients around the brief-writing process. By the end, you'll feel equipped to have more candid, constructive conversations and ensure every campaign starts with clarity and purpose. Head over to betterbriefs.com for more resources and get ready to produce your agency's best work yet!  A big thank you to our podcast's presenting sponsor, White Label IQ.

In the first half, author and editor Craig Weiler discussed the intricate world of parapsychology, defining it as "the science of psychic ability," with major areas of research that include telepathy, precognition, and remote viewing. He emphasized the rigorous scientific methodology behind this field, stating, "We're not talking about ghost hunting shows; we're talking about scientists forming experiments...and presenting them at symposiums." Sharing his personal journey into parapsychology, he was sparked by skepticism that he encountered while blogging about psychic phenomena. He recounted, "I kept finding more and more that they were wrong," referring to critics who dismiss psychic abilities as nonexistent. This led him to a deeper exploration of the subject, culminating in his joining the Parapsychological Association."There are thousands of studies on telepathy," including ones that have provided substantial evidence for its existence, he cited. He elaborated on telepathy experiments where a sender and receiver, isolated in separate rooms, attempt to connect mentally through images. If the receiver accurately identifies the sender's images more than chance would allow, it suggests that telepathy is indeed occurring. The conversation shifted to the concept of telekinesis, or psychokinesis, where the ability to move objects with the mind is explored. Weiler explained that scientific experiments use a random number generator to see if subjects can influence the outcomes. He also described a specific experiment involving a small piece of tin foil placed under a bowl and manipulated mentally to rotate. While the results are often subtle, he noted, "I have seen some video of them getting it to move. It's a slow movement." Reflecting on the future of parapsychology, he expressed hope that it will eventually prove psychic phenomena is a fundamental aspect of consciousness.---------------In the latter half, master herbalist Sara Chana talked about the many herbal remedies to improve one's health and functioning. Once people learn how to include herbal medicine in their lives, they really can take care of the daily aches and pains, she explained. The spice cinnamon offers a number of health benefits, such as stabilizing blood pressure, and in clinical studies, it "can take care and get rid of salmonella and E. coli," she reported. For stress relief, she recommended skullcap, stating it calms without causing drowsiness. She also mentioned kava as a traditional relaxation aid, often used in the Philippines to ease tension during business meetings. Blue Vervain is another herb that has stress-reducing effects, she added.Chana highlighted the role of aromatherapy, stating that essential oils provide scents that "can create memories and shape your mood," including lavender, known for its calming effects. She described turmeric as "probably one of the biggest gifts we have on the planet," pointing out its anti-inflammatory properties and recommending it as a dietary staple. She also shared a unique herbal combination for memory preservation for those over 40, featuring rosemary, lion's mane, and gotu cola. Hosts: Adam Gardiner and Rusty Cannon  On the Hill 2025: How the attorney general’s office is working with the legislature  As the state grows and as the economy grows, the state’s attorney general’s office says it needs more resources and funding to tackle the growing number of cases they’re handling. New Attorney General Derek Brown is asking the Utah Legislature for more funding as he works to rebuild the office. He joins Inside Sources live on Capitol Hill to discuss how his office is working with lawmakers during this legislative session.    On the Hill 2025: Launching a grant program to fund ‘catalyst centers’ in Utah  How do you view success? For House Speaker Mike Schultz, it involves preparing youth to enter the workforce – and be able to sustain a good life – right out of high school. Today, he’s introducing a new bill into committee that would fund grant programs for local education agencies to create or expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) types of programs, something he believes will help Utah’s youth learn the skills they need to be successful. He joins Inside Sources to talk about it.    On the Hill 2025: Revisions to elections laws  He might be a freshman legislator but he’s not wasting any time getting to work, choosing to tackle a hot topic during the legislative session: elections. State Representative Doug Fiefia wants to speed up and clean up things on Election Day, including changing the voter registration deadline and specifying the deadlines for ballot collection. Rep. Fiefia joins us to walk us through the bill.    On the Hill 2025: Addressing law enforcement performance standards  In 2018, Utah banned police quotas. However, some law enforcement agencies still use a kind of quota system, and State Senator Todd Weiler wants that process to stop. Some agencies use quotas to make sure officers are doing their jobs – that they’re not just sitting around. Sen. Weiler is running a bill would create a new performance standard metric to ensure police officers are held to similar standards; he joins the show to explain.    Race for a reconciliation budget continues  U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson seems to be falling behind in the race to get a reconciliation package put together. Who’s in the lead? It looks like it’s the Senate – they may get the budget package created before the House. The Inside Sources hosts discuss the latest developments from over the weekend on government funding.    Impending tariffs on incoming steel, aluminum   While the general tariffs on Mexico and Canada are paused, other tariffs are moving forward. President Trump has announced his intention to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum being imported into the United States. Inside Sources hosts Adam Gardiner and Rusty Cannon share their thoughts on the continued threats of tariffs.    On the Hill 2025: What’s it like as a legislative intern during the session?  On Inside Sources, we chat with the movers and shakers in politics. That usually involves speaking with the lawmakers themselves, but it also includes chatting with the folks in the legislators’ offices. Delaney Moss, Communications Intern for the House Majority joins Inside Sources to describe what it’s like to work at the Capitol during the legislative session.    DOGE sets its sights on the Department of Education  One of President Trump’s key platform issues has been the dismantling of the Department of Education. Late last week, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) went in and began taking control of the Department of Education. There’s been a lot of pushback, but is it warranted? Newly released test scores show that there might actually be quite a bit of room for improvement within the country’s education system.
