I'm taking part in the JDRF Ride because I'm up for a physical and mental challenge that I know will be the experience of a lifetime. And, the money I raise will change the lives of millions of people who struggle with the burden of type 1 diabetes (T1D) every day. My nephew Super Zach, along with other family and friends, have been living with this autoimmune disease that adds a few more obstacles to having a normal life. Their struggles and victories made me want to support them and their families in the one way I enjoy: through bicycling. That's why I joined the My Ride program, in hopes that what I do can help those I know and love. Welcome to episode #8 of the Dreaming of Cooperstown Podcast with my guest Eric Tozer. ERIC MADE HISTORY, BECOMING THE FIRST PERSON WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES (T1D) TO COMPLETE THE WORLD MARATHON CHALLENGE, RUNNING 7 MARATHONS ON 7 CONTINENTS IN 7 CONSECUTIVE DAYS. Eric Tozer is an endurance athlete and a diabetes ambassador who inspires the community through sports and utilizes his athletic accomplishments as a platform to be a role model in the diabetes community. Eric was diagnosed with T1D in 2006, while traveling in Europe. He had the classic symptoms of diabetes including constant thirst, increased appetite, frequent urination, blurred vision, lethargy and weight loss. Eric had always lived a very active and healthy lifestyle, so the sudden 20-pound weight loss made him aware that something was seriously wrong. Upon returning home, a visit to his doctor revealed the devastating and life changing news of his diagnosis. Eric’s life was quickly turned upside down: checking his blood sugar levels up to 10 times a day, calculating carbohydrate intake and taking varying units of insulin shots with every meal. But Eric wasn’t going to let diabetes control his life and decided to take charge. Soon after his diagnosis, he completed his first half Ironman and hasn’t stopped since. He co-founded non-profit organization, Diabetes Sports Project, comprised of hundreds of T1D athletes around the globe, demonstrating how through proper diet, exercise, a positive outlook and effective blood glucose management, dreams can be achieved.  Eric’s Athletic Accomplishments: World Marathon Challenge 2019 (7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days)  Run Across America (3,000+ mile run across USA in 15 days with ten T1Ds) 6 mile Ironman distance triathlons 3 mile Half-Ironman distance triathlons Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons 2 mile Marathons 1 mile Half-Marathons NCAA Men's Soccer Final Four All-Tournament Team (2004) Diabetes Sports Project Diabetes Sports Project (DSP) was co-founded by fellow T1Ds and friends, Eric Tozer and Casey Boren. DSP is comprised of the world’s elite diabetic athlete ambassadors who inspire and educate the diabetes community to achieve their goals and aspirations. These ambassadors demonstrate how through proper diet, exercise, a positive outlook and effective blood glucose management dreams can be achieved. The DSP ambassadors are directly engaged in community events within the diabetes and healthcare industry around the world. They participate in diabetes camps, JDRF & ADA events, industry conferences and trade shows, hospital visits, patient support groups, medical professional events and much more. Additionally, their athletes compete at the highest levels of sports to demonstrate that goals can be achieved with diabetes. DSP is dedicated to empowering the nearly 26 million affected by type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the United States. Through inspirational and educational community engagement along with competition in the biggest sporting events in the world, DSP will inspire and educate millions of people affected by diabetes. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.  Their vision is a world without type 1 diabetes. Their mission is improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. Type 1 diabetes Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure. In T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. This means a process your body does naturally and automatically becomes something that now requires your daily attention and manual intervention. If you have T1D, you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance these insulin doses with your eating and activity throughout the day and night. However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes. Even with the most vigilant disease management, a significant portion of your day will be spent with either high or low blood-sugar levels. These fluctuations place people with T1D at risk for potentially life-threatening hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes as well as devastating long-term complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation. Founder and CEO of Fit4D, David Weingard David is a diabetes patient who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 36 while training for a survival race. A veteran of numerous running and triathlon races (including Ironman triathlons consisting of a 2.4M swim, 112M bike and 26.2M run), David committed to rebuild his life and provide positive energy to the diabetes community while coping with the condition on a 24/7 basis. Beginning with shorter races, he gradually learned how to successfully race triathlons with diabetes and within a year, completed the famous Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco Bay.  He then began racing Ironman triathlons again – though this time, working through the delicate balance between insulin, food, nutrition and exercise. Through these races, David has fundraised extensively on behalf of the Juvenile diabetes Research Foundation's (JDRF) New York City Chapter. David's personal experience receiving meaningful education and support from a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) sparked the idea for Fit4D to leverage technology to scale the patient reach of adherence and outcome improvement programs for pharmaceutical, payer and provider organizations.   In 2008, David left Microsoft to found Fit4D, building on his career as an executive in the technology sector.   As the founder and CEO of Fit4D, David received the PM360 Elite Entrepreneur award for transforming the diabetes landscape. Under David's leadership PM360 also named Fit4D one of the top innovative healthcare startups in 2015, while ePharma named Fit4D its 2016 audience winner of the Disruptive Technology Showcase and Innovations Challenge.  David is transforming the diabetes landscape and improving people's health in the real world every day. David was selected as the Keynote Speaker for the American Diabetes Association's largest fundraising event, Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, 2016. David has given back to the diabetes community by coaching the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association's Tour De Cure many times, and gives back to the entrepreneur community by guiding emerging health technology founders. As a chosen finalist for the Novo Nordisk-Lyfebulb Patient Entrepreneur award, David participated in a panel on patient-centric innovation, sharing his message of hope to an international audience.  Most recently, David was the recipient of the first-ever Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award, spotlighting individual contributions to high-tech/high-touch care and awarded to those who demonstrate compassionate care in this area. 00:00 The trend with Diabetes today. 03:15 The several factors to managing Diabetes. 03:40 The economics of treating and managing Diabetes. 04:20 How the structure of care affects Diabetes management. 08:50 Critical need to engage at the local level, particularly in underserved communities. 10:00 “The only people using apps are the ones already engaged.” 14:15 The 80/20 rule applied to Diabetes patients, adherence, and cost. 15:45 Approaching Diabetes management in steps. 18:20 A guide to keeping Diabetic Populations sound. 20:20 Prescribing an App. 21:40 Best Practice Provider Extension. 24:50 Support vs. Evidence-Based Medicine. 27:30 The optimal solution for patients. 28:35 Programming & Scaling with Technology. 30:50 Standardizing Care. 33:00 You can find out more at www.fit4d.com or email info@fit4d.com

Moira McCarthy Stanford and her husband, Sean Stanford, were recently honored by the New England Chapter of JDRF at the Boston One Night Gala. Moira is an author, speaker, dedicated diabetes advocate, mentor and educator. When her daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed 18 years ago, Moira jumped into the diabetes community and hasn't looked back. Stacey talks to Moira about this honor and about the dress she wore to the Gala. Seamstress (and type 1 mom) Darlene Winn crafted it and hand-embroidered dozens of names into the lining - names of "T1D heroes I love," says Moira. You'll also hear from Moira & Sean's daughters, Lauren and Leigh. They talk about what this honor means to their family and how their parents kept a balance of diabetes management, helping the community and living a full and happy life outside of T1D (Leigh does not have diabetes). Stacey also talks with the JDRF chapter about why they chose Moira and to the director of the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes. Moira more recently became involved in that organization and completed a grueling ride with Lauren last year.

On today's DiabetesPowerShow, We welcome the Leavitt family. The entire family was in studio to share their Diabetes journey...times two. Lots of laughter and lots of tears. A fun time was had by all.  About the Leavitt Family Jason and Michelle have been married for 18 years, and have three children; Jace the oldest son is 16, Erick the middle son is 13, and the youngest is daughter Oaklie who is 11. Their diabetic journey started in November 2011, when Michelle took Erick to the doctor, for what she believed was a urinary tract infection, due to frequent urination. Erick was diagnosed with T1D, which opened up a whole world the family knew nothing about. Over the next couple of years, the family worked to control Erick’s blood sugars, while learning all they could about T1D. This led them to become very involved with the JDRF. Almost exactly three years later, in November of 2014, their daughter, Oaklie, was also diagnosed with T1D, after exhibiting similar signs to what Erick had shown. Although mentally and emotionally difficult to comprehend having another T1D, they were confident in maintaining a healthy and normal life for now two of their children. The Leavitts have taken a positive outlook, and learned to embrace their new life of living with T1D. They continue to be involved with the JDRF, as both Erick and Oaklie are Youth Ambassadors for the organization, as well as participating in the One Walk yearly. This year, both Jason and Erick will be participating in the JDRF Ride to Cure in Tucson, Arizona, which is a 104 mile bike ride to support T1D. Upon learning that Oaklie was also T1D, one of the changes that had to be made was their walk team name, which up to that point was Team diabErick. A party was held with all of their walk team supporters, as a kick off to introduce the new team name.
