A webinar lecture with Elizabeth Lev(Duquesne University). This event is co-presented by the Harvard Catholic Forum and the Lumen Christi Institute. St. Joseph was an unassuming latecomer to the history of art, but once discovered, his images evolved rapidly to serve the Catholic Church during challenging times. From model for the papacy, to symbol of marriage and fatherhood, to guide for a good death and advocate for the worker, St Joseph's many guises have made him one of the Church's greatest spiritual treasures. Following Pope Francis' dedication of 2021 to St. Joseph, this talk will look at Giotto, Raphael, Murillo and others as we uncover the many faces of this quiet saint. This event co-sponsored by the Saint Benedict Institute, the Nova Forum, the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies, the Ars Vivendi Arts Initiative of the Collegium Institute, the St. Paul's Catholic Center, the St. Lawrence Institute for Faith and Culture, and the New England Chapter of the Patron of the Arts Vatican Museums.

After MassWildlife's proposed license, stamp and permit fee increases & and a proposed amendment to a Hopkinton, MA town firearm discharge bylaw that would double the setback limits to 1000 feet and 300 feet from dwellings and roads leak to the internet, heated discussions emerge on forums debating the sharp increases and the seemingly less and less opportunity available to hunters. Chris Borgatti, a board member of the New England Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, who works to conserve hunting opportunity and works closely with MassWildlife comes on the podcast to clear up some of the misinformation circulating. He discusses where the funds actually come from that purchase new WMA and conservation lands, where our license, stamps and permit fees go to use, and the differences between hunting statutes (laws) and hunting regulations (policies MassWildlife can change) and where popular topics like Sunday hunting, Crossbow hunting, and setback distances fall. He discusses his role with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and what we can do as hunters to influence policy and make sure we have a voice at the table as well how we can be a part of BHA's Mentor/Mentee program. On this podcast, we talk a lot about relationship building. Doing great work should always be your number one priority as a lawyer. But successful careers are not built on merit alone. The people in your network are critical. Whether you are thinking about an in-house move or growing your law practice, relationships matter….a lot. In this episode, I speak with someone who is a master at relationship building. Ben Sigel is a lawyer who has been a litigator at several mid-sized and large firms, Director of Client and Community Relations for an AmLaw 100 firm, a Candidate for the United States Congress in my district, and President of the New England Chapter of the Hispanic National Bar Association. He is someone who actively works to build communities and a natural connector. He is also someone with deep roots in both the LatinX and Jewish Communities. About a year ago, I began working on a diversity initiative with ProVisors, a great business networking group that I belong to. I talk about ProVisors a lot on this show (and to anyone who will listen). When I was thinking that I wanted to build deeper ties in the Hispanic legal community, everyone said Ben is someone I should meet. And so we had coffee in the lobby of his office building and he taught me something very important. If you want to build connections in a new community, you need to show up. Since that time, I’ve seen Ben show up over and over and over again. He cares deeply about building bridges and he embraces both his LatinX and Jewish heritages. Ben and I will be talk about his philosophy about bringing together constituencies and what it was like to run a congressional campaign during a pandemic. .

In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Courtney Rinaldi who is the Patient & Community Outreach Manager at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the New England Chapter. "LLS is the world's largest voluntary (nonprofit) health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and provides education and patient services." LLS.org As you know, my goal of this podcast is to help other families through their cancer journey and beyond. My family has been so fortunate to benefit from the LLS in multiple ways from financial assistance to connecting with other families. I felt honored to get this chance to speak with Courtney and talk about all the innovative research, massive scale fundraising and most importantly the ongoing medical and emotional support LLS provides families during any stage of their cancer treatment. My hope is that you gain some additional information about this wonderful organization and it in turn can assist your family too! It's September, and the duo are ready to dive back into routines after busy summers. If only life would allow it! But they’re professionals and keep rolling with the punches. TB’s week has been filled with proofing an audiobook (exciting), getting Reservations of the Heart ready to send to her ARC team (slightly terrifying), and she’s been asked to join the 2020 New England Chapter of the Romance Writer’s of America (that’s a mouthful) conference planning committee (she’s envisioning lots of spreadsheets). Also, she got a photo of an invisible sloth. It’s possible she’s gullible. Clare's week also involved proofing an audiobook (fab news), she has 25k on her new book (great work), and she’s struggling with editing the latest London book (send her best wishes!). Clare needs to battle the shiny new book syndrome. Since it’s been hot in London, she’s been eating ice cream, putting TB to shame. On to the main topic: podcasts! Both are avid listeners, which shouldn’t be all that surprising since they have their own. They share which writing podcasts they turn to. TB gets slightly miffed that Clare hasn’t mentioned one about creativity until recording this episode (bad Clare!). But they don’t just listen to writing podcasts, and they share a few of the fun ones they enjoy. They do caution not to fall too far into the podcast rabbit hole. It’s easy to spend too much time researching. If you only have one hour a day, it might be better spent writing most of the days of the week. It’s all about balance. Phil Saviano is a victim of child sexual abuse by a Massachusetts Catholic priest in the 1960s. In 1992, at the age of 40, he went public about his abuse, generating national headlines. Through the pursuit of a civil suit, he gained evidence that least 7 bishops in four states had known that his abuser, Fr. David Holley, was a child molester. After settling his lawsuit with no confidentiality restrictions, he established the New England Chapter of SNAP, the national support network. Through SNAP, he formalized his outreach to other victims of child clergy abuse and assumed a role of expert and media spokesperson on the issue. Phil’s year 2001 contributions to the Boston Globe’s landmark investigation of clergy abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston, MA are portrayed in the movie “Spotlight,” the Academy Award Winning Best Film of 2016. Mike Rezendes is a member of the Boston Globe Spotlight Team and shared a 2003 Pulitzer Prize for revealing the cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. In more than two decades with the Globe, he has investigated a wide array of additional subjects, including the September 11 attacks, health care costs, and prison suicides. While working with the Spotlight Team, Mike was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist twice, once in 2007 for an investigation of the debt collection industry, and again in 2017 for an exposé of the mental health care system in Massachusetts. https://www3.bostonglobe.com/arts/movies/spotlight-movie/

Generating legal business requires a healthy mix of sales and marketing. For many attorneys, marketing is the easy part. If you publish articles, give presentations, send out client alerts, post on social media, and participate in bar association committees, your reputation will grow. Building your reputation and developing your niche are important. But as any marketing professional will tell you, marketing is not a substitute for sales. If you want to build your law practice, you need to build relationships with clients, potential clients and referral sources. Marketing can support relationship building. However,it is not a substitute. For many lawyers, relationship building is less natural than getting involved in reputation building activities. Marketing activities can feel a lot like practicing law. Speaking and writing about your practice area is a comfortable complement to providing legal services. The brief you write today might become the basis of an article you write or a client seminar you deliver tomorrow. Building business relationships is entirely different. There are many ways to build business relationships. One of the simplest things to do is to meet someone for coffee or invite them to a social function at your firm. Introducing them to professionals they want to meet is particularly effective, especially if those individuals become their clients. Other common relationship building activities include taking someone to a basketball or baseball game, helping one of their children find a job, or sending them articles you think may be of interest. Growing Your Network If you want to increase the size of your referral network, getting involved in trade associations and non-profit causes is often effective. But what happens when you are just starting to get involved and don’t know many people? What if you attend networking functions where you don’t recognize anyone in the room? How do you get the conversation started? How do you approach strangers in a way that feels comfortable and which may lead to referrals down the line? In this episode, I speak with Deborah Scaringi, who has some answers. Deb is a talented marketing and business development thought leader with over 25 years of experience in the legal industry. As an outside consultant and in-house professional, she has advised a broad mix lawyers and law firms on all aspects of selling legal services. Through her consulting business, Scaringi Marketing, Deb helps her clients to undertake strategic business development, build marketing plans and coaches attorneys to execute upon their plans. She also works with lawyers and law firm to develop effective websites, blogs, and social media programs. She manages events and helps firms to transition established marketing programs during mergers. Deb functions as both a fractional CMO and as an on-call project manager. She has worked with many of the major law firms in Massachusetts and has served as President of the New England Chapter of the Legal Marketing Association and the Immediate-Past President of the inaugural Board of Directors at the launch of the LMA’s Northeast Regional Chapter. Boards in ESOP companies serve shareholders, as they do in all companies. But who should be a part of your ESOP board? Oftentimes, ESOP companies will look internally to build their board. This session discusses the need for the Board to be independent, why that is important, what to think about when looking for external board members and how to leverage his/her strengths to help the Company. You will hear thoughts from the perspective of an independent trustee, as well as a company who utilizes external board members and how doing so has strengthened its board. Capital Trustees wants to thank Janine, Nannu, and Cindy for their flexibility as Bret was a late addition to the panel and we really appreciate all the hard work that they put into this presentation. You can download the slide deck that accompanies this episode at www.theesoppodcast.com.

We start with an interview with Laurie Calvert, Chief Operating Officer of Meridian Associates, Inc., a civil engineering and land surveying firm that transitioned to 100% employee ownership in 2016. The second half of this podcast is a recording of an interactive presentation given at the conference: "If I'd Only Known Then What I Know Now: Transitioning to and Embracing an ESOP." The goal of this session is to give companies who are thinking about becoming an ESOP, or are new to ESOPs, information and ideas to help with the success of the transition to employee ownership. The presentation slide deck and contact information are available on our website, www.captrustees.com. [The first section of the podcast has some background noise from the conference, which subsides as the recording progresses. It's episode #51 of the DGS Podcast and we have on the show the founders of the New England Chapter of the Dead Games Society, which I affectionately call, Chapter 2! Do you live on the East Coast and wanna be involved in DGS events and activities? Or are you an avid fan of the great old school games? Well this episode is for you, so sit back in your comfy chair with a drink and soak up the wisdom of James, Ken and Bob as they talk all about why and how they came to create the New England chapter of the Dead Games Society. Moira McCarthy Stanford and her husband, Sean Stanford, were recently honored by the New England Chapter of JDRF at the Boston One Night Gala. Moira is an author, speaker, dedicated diabetes advocate, mentor and educator. When her daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed 18 years ago, Moira jumped into the diabetes community and hasn't looked back. Stacey talks to Moira about this honor and about the dress she wore to the Gala. Seamstress (and type 1 mom) Darlene Winn crafted it and hand-embroidered dozens of names into the lining - names of "T1D heroes I love," says Moira. You'll also hear from Moira & Sean's daughters, Lauren and Leigh. They talk about what this honor means to their family and how their parents kept a balance of diabetes management, helping the community and living a full and happy life outside of T1D (Leigh does not have diabetes). Stacey also talks with the JDRF chapter about why they chose Moira and to the director of the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes. Moira more recently became involved in that organization and completed a grueling ride with Lauren last year.

How to Use Evernote for Genealogy is available for purchase from Amazon.com and other booksellers. The Interview This interview is a little bit different from what is usually done on the podcast. Instead of focusing on a genealogy professional, we instead focus on a resource – Evernote. Author Kerry Scott describes talks about her book How to Use Evernote for Genealogy. In this interview Kerry Scott describes some of her favorite tips and techniques that can make Evernote a go-to tool for professional genealogists. Find out the benefits of sharing notes and notebooks with clients, what makes Evernote's search functions so beneficial to genealogists, and how Evernote camera captures documents using your mobile device. Kerry also describes her journey of writing this book – how long it took to write the book, how she organized it to get started and what her greatest fears were. Action Item This is a really simple and obvious action item for this episode. Kerry Scott gave excellent insight into Evernote. Evernote is a FREE tool. Your action item this week is to check it out. Download it on your phone or computer and see what it can do for you. It's free so trying it out doesn't cost you anything but time. See if you can use Evernote to make you more productive and efficient. News The deadline for speaker submissions to the 2017 National Genealogical Society Family History Conference is coming up on April 1st, 2016. Visit www.ngsgenealogy.org for more information. In TGP news, in the last episode I mentioned that registration was open for the Mastermind groups that I am offering. I wanted to let you know that both groups have sold out. So unfortunately it's too late to sign up for them. However, I will be offering two specialized masterminds – one for bloggers and one for public speakers. These will be shorter – not full 12 month masterminds like the others. I'll also be bringing back my popular Goals workshop. That's a onetime 3-hour workshop that helps you really focus in on your priorities and accomplishing your goals. So keep your eye on the website later in March for info about all of that. We also have a new mailing list and private Facebook group. The group is free and it's a place where you can talk about the action items from the show and ask questions. There's one hitch though. In order to get into the group you have to sign up for the mailing list on TheGenealogyProfessional.com website. Once you sign up you'll be sent a link for the Facebook page. So be sure to check that out. I'll be traveling and appearing at some conferences in the coming months. On March 10th I'll be presenting the marketing segment at the Forensic Genealogy Institute in San Antonio, Texas. If you're going to be there be sure to stop me and say hello. On March 19th I'll be presenting my Goals Workshop to the members of the New England Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. And on April 16th I'll be presenting a genealogy talk at the Massachusetts Genealogical Council seminar in Marlborough, Massachusetts. If you are in New England, be sure to check that one out because CeCe Moore will be presenting a full day of DNA classes as part of the MGC seminar.

My guests today are veterans of Science of Ultra; they joined me in Episode 4.LISTEN TO THAT EPISODE (#4) FIRST IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY. Today we continue our series with them on all things sweating, hydration, electrolytes, and fluid balance. Up first is Team Leader of the Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division at the US. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (aka USARIEM). In addition to his doctorate in exercise physiology, he is also a registered dietician. My first guest is Dr. Sam Cheuvront. My second guest is Principal Investigator in the Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division at USARIEM. He served as the president of the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. And, he is an ultra marathon runner himself. So, he knows first hand what it takes to achieve in our sport. My second guest is Dr. Robert Kenefick. Collectively, my guests have published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and reviews. They are two of the world’s leading scientists in hydration and fluid homeostasis, especially during exercise. They work for the U.S. Army. So, we must provide the disclaimer that "The views and/or opinions of Dr.'s Kenefick and Cheuvront are theirs personally and do not reflect the views or opinions of the U.S. Army or DoD." In the first part of this series, episode 4, we focused on the physiology of fluid and electrolyte balance. That episode is packed with fundamental physiology and what we talk about in this episode builds on what we covered in episode 4. So, you’ll benefit most from this episode if you’ve listened to that episode. In this episode, we’re focusing on: FLUID BALANCE AND THERMOREGULATION WHILE PLANNING FOR PERFORMANCE Quick background: We sweat to put water on the surface of our skin, which evaporates to the environment. The transition from liquid to gas requires a large amount of energy; sweating cools us because that energy comes in the form of heat, which is drawn from our skin. Sweat that drips off of us, does not provide that cooling benefit. Either way, that fluid loss eventually impacts all three body fluid compartments, which are 1) blood plasma, 2) intracellular (inside cells), and 3) interstitial (outside cells but not including blood). Listen and learn the answers to these questions: We start with a scenario: I go for a long run and during the run my urine is dark; after the run I try to replace fluids by drinking plenty the rest of the day and by bedtime, my urine is a much lighter color. But, when I wake up in the morning, it’s dark again…what’s going on? What is the time-frame for fluid/electrolyte shifts among body compartments? As we sweat, the fluid and electrolytes initially come from the interstitial compartment, specifically around the glands near the surface of our skin. As we run and sweat…what do we know about fluid shifts and electrolyte shifts across the three body compartments during prolonged exercise. Another example, I run and take water = regular urination and clear; drink electrolyte solution = less urination and darker…we talked about the physiology of this in episode 4 but now, putting a real world example to the physiology, what’s happening to me in those cases? Then we move into specific preparation for performance Dr. Kenefick is an ultra runner and a leading expert on this topic, plus he has access to all resources for measurement and testing. He must never have any problem with fluid and hydration...right? Once in a while, we hear advocates of ‘bonk’ runs where one would purposefully dehydrate or go out without water. Clearly, this can be very very dangerous and we recommend against doing bonk runs. Out of curiosity, thought, is there any evidence that we can train in a way that will help us to perform better in a dehydrated or low volume state? Keeping ALL ELSE EQUAL, what are the practical, relative effects of each of the following on sweating: long clothing vs short vs nothing (same material - just different coverage), tightness of clothing, type of material, color of material? What are the definitions of adaptation, acclimation, acclimatization? What does it mean to be acclimatized to a hot environment with respect to body fluids, hydration, and sweating? What are best practices for preparing to race in warmer environments? Exercise, sauna,…? What is the recommended protocol for acclimation to heat in preparation for an event? What is the time-course of gain and loss of heat acclimation? When we plan for thermal stress from the environment, we must consider not only temperature but other factors such as wind, sun exposure, and humidity. Let’s say that we have gone through the acclimation protocol. Is there a cut off temperature/thermal stress range, below which, there is no benefit to performance. How can we gauge whether going through the protocol will be of benefit? Specifically thinking about what’s going on during running: at what body temperature do we begin to sweat and where on the body do we sweat first, most, etc.? Should we be concerned about gear placement (e.g., hydration pack vs waste belt) with regard to efficient sweating and cooling? E.g., would we expect any appreciable difference in fluid loss or cooling over time for someone wearing a hydration pack vs waist belt vs none or handheld bottles. To what extent does carrying extra weight affect sweat loss due to the extra work of carrying it; e.g., as much as 5 lbs for some full hydration packs vs 1 lb or so for a full handheld. LINK TO FLUID REPLACEMENT IN EXERCISE POSITION STAND OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SPORTS MEDICINE (ACSM) LINK TO ALL ACSM POSITION STANDS Many people have the idea that, while running, ‘if they are continuing to urinate and it isn’t very dark, then they are probably OK’. We’ve established that watching urine color - DURING exercise - is not a reliable method for monitoring hydration status. So, “How can I monitor myself for appropriate fluid replacement and maintenance during an ultra marathon (or during a long training)?” Our wrap up, big money question today...WHAT’S THE ANSWER?
My guests today are Dr. Sam Cheuvront and Dr. Robert Kenefick Two of the world’s leading scientists in hydration and fluid homeostasis Going in alphabetical order, My first guest is Research Physiologist and Team Leader of the Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division at the US. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (also known as USARIEM). His research includes the study of environmental and nutritional factors influencing human work performance. He is a leader in the fields of human fluid needs, dehydration assessment, heat stress mitigation, and exercise thermoregulation. He’s published over 100 -peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. Our first guest is Sam Cheuvront, PhD, RD My second guest is Principal Investigator in the Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division at USARIEM. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters AND reviews on fluid homeostasis and the physiological responses to environmental stress. He served as the president of the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine and received their Honor Award in 2012. He is also part of the Ultra Clan as an ultra marathon runner himself. Our second guest is Robert Kenefick, PhD. My guests work for the U.S. Army. So, we must provide the disclaimer that "The views and/or opinions of Dr.'s Kenefick and Cheuvront are theirs personally and do not reflect the views or opinions of the U.S. Army or DoD." Part 1: BASIC PHYSIOLOGY - FLUID & ELECTROLYTE BALANCE This episode is the first in a two part series on fluids, hydration, and electrolyte physiology pertaining to ultra marathon running. We’re starting with the basics and progressing to specific application. In this episode, you'll learn the answers to: What are the major body fluid and compartments and definitions the major relevant terms (de/eu/hyperhydration, hyper/hypovolemia)? What are the mechanisms/routes and quantities of water loss? How much water does a person need each day? Drinking to thirst - is it sufficient, like you hear commonly? (spoiler: NO!) How much salt is lost in sweat - only sodium? To what extent does this change throughout the time-course of an ultra marathon? What’s in sweat and what are ranges of rates and composition in running? During exercise, the majority of water gained is in the form of what we drink. But we have heard about getting water also from the breakdown of stored glycogen. Is this accurate? How can we expand our plasma volume? When do we need (and not need) an electrolyte-containing drink either during or after exercise? What is needed in an electrolyte drink beyond sodium? Hyponatremia; should it be a concern for most ultra marathon runners? When does a runner need to consciously add sodium, beyond just following cravings? AND MUCH MORE...
Unicorns-1.0 Introductory Comments: [audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/Unicorns10.mp3] Unicorns10.mp3 Hello and welcome my friends. This is Chris and this a new series of podcasts that I'm doing that I'm going to call ‘Unicorns'. Let me explain. Be warned this is a bit of departure from what I've done in the past. I' will try to give you enough information so that you can decide whether you want to get on this particular bus and share this personal journey with me. This series is going to be about my current life events and journey. It involves running and the Boston Marathon, but only tangentially. If you're looking for marathon tips you should stop now and switch to one of the main RunRunLive episodes or any of the other fine marathon podcasts out there. If you have been listening to my show for any of the last 5 years and 282 episodes you know that I have chosen not to share much about my personal life. You could if you listened carefully tease out some of the background noise from my sanitized avatar but for the most part I've isolated you from my job and my family. I did this for two reasons. First I didn't want the show to be about me – I wanted it to be about you and your journey with running and endurance sports. Second, I suppose I was afraid to trust the internet with too much personal information. That's the way we were raised. It's part of our culture in New England. We keep the shades drawn and we give our neighbors their peace and privacy. Well, my friends, today, and in the unicorn series I'm going to throw open the curtains of my personal life a bit. I'm going to do so to bring purpose to this year's running and to let you help me in my journey. First we'll have a 15-20 minute interview with Nick from the American Liver Foundation and then I'll share with you what I'm doing and invite you to get on my bus as things get weird over the next 9 weeks or so. Cheers, Chris, Featured Interview: Nick Giordano is a 13 time marathoner. He has been the chair of the American Liver Foundation's Run for Research Marathon on two occasions. Nick serves on the Board of Directors for the American Liver Foundation's New England Chapter. ALF- The American Liver Foundation's Run for Research® program is the oldest and one of the largest marathon teams in the Boston Athletic Association's official charity program. For over two decades we have helped thousands of runners compete in the historic Boston Marathon while raising funds for the fight against liver disease. The organization's mission is this one of advocacy and education while raising important funds for research. Myfinishline link: Summary Article: I said I'd get personal and here we go… A year ago during the holidays my Dad wasn't feeling well. He began to look Jaundiced. After a few visits and trips to Boston we discovered that he had an inoperable tumor on a bile duct in his liver. They were able to put a stent in to relieve the bile duct and he went through a round of chemo to keep the cancer at bay. Over the last year he has had a series of setbacks and infections and now is ready to leave us in the near future. My Dad was a runner. My dad introduced me to the concept of running to get in shape when I was quite young. He never ran a marathon or any of that he just set the example of running to stay in shape. My Dad was and is a strong man. My parents have been very active in their social circle and teaching dance lessons and being an inspiration into their 80's. I'm the youngest of 4 children who all turned out well, thanks in no small part to the direction our parents set us on. Their belief in education, in learning, in being a better person and making the difference you can have been lessons that have guided us well. My parents supported me and encouraged me when I started racing marathons. They came to my races and passed me bottles and cheered me on in my success. My parents were always there for me. In a short while my father won't be there for me anymore. To honor my family, my parents and my family I have decided to run this year's Boston Marathon for the American Liver Foundation. I am going to track my journey through this Unicorn series and I need your help. Please go to my page at the American Liver Foundation and Donate. As an extra incentive, if you donate $50 or more I will write and record a personalized inspirational audio message for your next event. This is not some throw away kindness. I will write you something powerful and poetic that you can carry with you forever my friends. Go to: Thank you for joining me on my journey with purpose. Chris, - “sad song”
