Optimism for the future and helpful advice for long-term care professionals who hope to advance were in deep supply recently when the 2025 McKnight's Pinnacle Awards winners gathered to receive their honors. In this special installment of the McKnight's Newsmakers Podcast, honorees David Gifford, MD, and nursing leader Robert Francis Amoloria give their thoughts on the makings of success — personally, professionally and for the sector in the years ahead. “I'm very optimistic,” says Amoloria, the chief nursing officer for Legacy Healthcare, which operates 125 facilities in three states. “Amidst the commotion, the bluster, the upheaval, the noise, I still have faith in the healthcare industry and the profession's noble calling to service. I sincerely believe we're all going to rise above the fray against all odds and use our powerful calling to make a difference.” He urges colleagues to keep up with the swift technological changes hitting the sector — which should be viewed as opportunities as well as challenges, he reminded. “We are getting there,” he says in reference to post-acute care catching up to acute-care partners in adopting tech. Gifford, chief medical officer for the American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living, also is encouraging, noting “huge” opportunities for job entry and growth in the coming years. Gifford notes he's continually impressed by the current senior care workforce and its desire to elevate care. He says that even in tough times, he sees direct caregivers — as well as housekeepers, activities professionals and others — having a profound impact on patient care and quality. “Don't give up,” he prods. “It's the greatest place to work. There's no better job than taking care of the elderly.” Gifford prioritizes four areas where sector professionals need to focus attention. The first is improving staff recruitment and retention, and he reveals natural appeals there. Listen in to the full podcast hosted by McKnight's Long-Term Care News Executive Editor James M. Berklan to hear the others. “Nothing's out of your reach,” he tells senior care professionals. “One of the beauties of working in the nursing home or assisted living area is it's a great, small, confined healthcare system and team. You can make relationships with your mayor, local elected officials and tell them your story.” Amoloria advises up-and-coming sector professionals to keep an open mind, not be afraid to try new things and to lead by example. “Rise and defy the affinity for self-obsession so that you can live for something bigger than yourself,” he adds. “Evaluate your use of time, talents and energy so you are dedicating it to something that improves and edifies others, and most of all, elevates life.”

The move addresses concerns about technology's impact on children, echoing global trends like bans in Australia and France. Proponents argue the ban reduces distractions and improves student well-being, while critics worry about communication during emergencies. Discussions may extend the ban to high schools in the future, reflecting ongoing debates about technology's role in education. STORY 2: Kennesaw Grand Prix 5K Series Returns For 2025 The 2025 Kennesaw Grand Prix 5K series returns with four races on a fast, USATF-certified course through downtown Kennesaw and Swift-Cantrell Park. Part of the Fit City Kennesaw initiative, the series caters to competitive runners, beginners, and families, offering a festival-like atmosphere. Races start at Kennesaw First Baptist Church, with a one-mile fun run, 5K, and Tot Trot, followed by awards. The schedule includes races in April, June, September, and October, with early bird pricing and a custom gift for full-series registrants. The event, part of a partnership with Children’s Healthcare, gave Joseph a hands-on experience at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, including fire rescue training, a mock traffic stop, and trying on pilot safety gear. Adopted from Uganda, Joseph overcame severe ear infections and hearing loss with years of treatment, culminating in restored hearing. Now planning to join the U.S. Marine Corps, Joseph said the experience motivates him for his future military career. Vivian, a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement, was violently attacked by Sheriff Jim Clark while attempting to escort a group of African Americans to register to vote in Selma, Alabama.  Steve Fiffer is a New York Times Bestselling Author. His Book is "It's in The Action": Memories of a Nonviolent Warrior, Rev C.T. Vivian's Memoir.Reverend Vivian was a Major Force in the Fight for Civil Rights & Voters Rights in the Twentieth Century till he Passed July 17th, 2020.Regardless of Social Status, Party Affiliation or Belief, Race: Libertarian, Democrat, Progressive or Republican or Other, All Americans Should Have the Right to Vote!Senator Barack Obama, speaking at Selma's Brown Chapel on the March 2007, anniversary of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches, recognized Vivian in his opening remarks in the words of Martin L. King Jr. as "the greatest preacher to ever live."Studying for the ministry at American Baptist Theological Seminary (now called American Baptist College) in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1959, Vivian met James Lawson, who was teaching Mohandas Gandhi's nonviolent direct action strategy to the Nashville Student Movement. Soon Lawson's students, including Diane Nash, Bernard Lafayette, James Bevel, John Lewis and others from American Baptist, Fisk University and Tennessee State University, organized a systematic nonviolent sit-in campaign at local lunch counters.Vivian helped found the Nashville Christian Leadership Conference, and helped organize the first sit-ins in Nashville in 1960 and the first civil rights march in 1961. In 1961, Vivian participated in Freedom Rides. He worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. as the national director of affiliates for the SCLC. During the summer following the Selma Voting Rights Movement, Vivian is perhaps best known for, Vivian challenged Sheriff Jim Clark on the steps of the courthouse in Selma, Alabama, in 1965 during a drive to promote Black people to register to vote."You can turn your back on me, but you cannot turn your back upon the idea of justice," Vivian said to Clark as reporters recorded the interaction. "You can turn your back now and you can keep the club in your hand, but you cannot beat down justice. And we will register to vote, because as citizens of these United States we have the right to do it."Vivian conceived and directed an educational program, Vision, and put 702 Alabama students in college with scholarships (this program later became Upward Bound). His 1970 Black Power and the American Myth was the first book on the Civil Rights Movement by a member of Martin Luther King's staff.On August 8, 2013, President Barack Obama named Vivian as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.Steve's own Memoir is "Three Quarters, Two Dimes, and a Nickel". The Pack Horse Library Project ran from 1936 to 1943, with librarians on horseback traveling 10,000 square miles of rugged eastern Kentucky to provide reading materials to isolated families, some of the hardest hit by the Great Depression. The WPA “book women” rode out at least twice a month, in all kinds of weather, with each route covering 100 to 120 miles a week. At its height, the program helped serve almost 100,000 people. By the time the Pack Horse Library Project ended in 1943, it had made a lasting impact on the people of rural Appalachia.
