Optimism for the future and helpful advice for long-term care professionals who hope to advance were in deep supply recently when the 2025 McKnight's Pinnacle Awards winners gathered to receive their honors. In this special installment of the McKnight's Newsmakers Podcast, honorees David Gifford, MD, and nursing leader Robert Francis Amoloria give their thoughts on the makings of success — personally, professionally and for the sector in the years ahead. “I'm very optimistic,” says Amoloria, the chief nursing officer for Legacy Healthcare, which operates 125 facilities in three states. “Amidst the commotion, the bluster, the upheaval, the noise, I still have faith in the healthcare industry and the profession's noble calling to service. I sincerely believe we're all going to rise above the fray against all odds and use our powerful calling to make a difference.” He urges colleagues to keep up with the swift technological changes hitting the sector — which should be viewed as opportunities as well as challenges, he reminded. “We are getting there,” he says in reference to post-acute care catching up to acute-care partners in adopting tech. Gifford, chief medical officer for the American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living, also is encouraging, noting “huge” opportunities for job entry and growth in the coming years. Gifford notes he's continually impressed by the current senior care workforce and its desire to elevate care. He says that even in tough times, he sees direct caregivers — as well as housekeepers, activities professionals and others — having a profound impact on patient care and quality. “Don't give up,” he prods. “It's the greatest place to work. There's no better job than taking care of the elderly.” Gifford prioritizes four areas where sector professionals need to focus attention. The first is improving staff recruitment and retention, and he reveals natural appeals there. Listen in to the full podcast hosted by McKnight's Long-Term Care News Executive Editor James M. Berklan to hear the others. “Nothing's out of your reach,” he tells senior care professionals. “One of the beauties of working in the nursing home or assisted living area is it's a great, small, confined healthcare system and team. You can make changes there. You can make relationships with your mayor, local elected officials and tell them your story.” Amoloria advises up-and-coming sector professionals to keep an open mind, not be afraid to try new things and to lead by example. “Rise and defy the affinity for self-obsession so that you can live for something bigger than yourself,” he adds. “Evaluate your use of time, talents and energy so you are dedicating it to something that improves and edifies others, and most of all, elevates life.”

The bill, awaiting Governor Brian Kemp's signature, requires students to lock up devices during school hours, with exceptions for medical or disability-related needs. The move addresses concerns about technology's impact on children, echoing global trends like bans in Australia and France. Proponents argue the ban reduces distractions and improves student well-being, while critics worry about communication during emergencies. Discussions may extend the ban to high schools in the future, reflecting ongoing debates about technology's role in education. Chicago Tribune, Slate, NY TimesOn "Bloody Sunday," March 7, 1965, C.T. Vivian, a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement, was violently attacked by Sheriff Jim Clark while attempting to escort a group of African Americans to register to vote in Selma, Alabama. Steve Fiffer is a New York Times Bestselling Author. His Book is "It's in The Action": Memories of a Nonviolent Warrior, Rev C.T. King Jr. as "the greatest preacher to ever live."Studying for the ministry at American Baptist Theological Seminary (now called American Baptist College) in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1959, Vivian met James Lawson, who was teaching Mohandas Gandhi's nonviolent direct action strategy to the Nashville Student Movement. "You can turn your back now and you can keep the club in your hand, but you cannot beat down justice. And we will register to vote, because as citizens of these United States we have the right to do it."Vivian conceived and directed an educational program, Vision, and put 702 Alabama students in college with scholarships (this program later became Upward Bound). Would you be apprehensive about adding a recruitment bot in your hiring process at the risk of losing the ‘human' factor? Our special guest, Betsy Robinson, explains how they utilize AI trends and other tech stacks to enhance their client and candidate experience. Betsy Robinson is the Founder & CEO of Tier4 Group, a woman-owned, diversity-certified talent acquisition firm headquartered in Atlanta. The company specializes in connecting exceptional talent with top-tier employers for technology and executive roles, combining advanced recruitment automation with a personalized approach. Under her leadership, Tier4 Group has achieved remarkable recognition, including six consecutive years on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies (2019-2024) and five appearances on the Atlanta Pacesetters list. Episode Outline and Highlights [03:03] Recruiting out of college - beginning of Betsy's 20-year recruitment journey. [07:05] How she ventured out alone - discussing high points and challenges. [18:31] Fostering a culture of feedback and how it elevates the quality of output. [24:19] Incorporating recruitment automation, technology, and AI. [33:35] Would you include a digital recruiter in hiring your process? [41:15] Betsy reveals their tech stack and AI trends. [47:28] The value of using note-taking AI tools. [51:52] Creating a culture of strong team collaboration. Incorporating a Digital Recruiter in the Hiring Process Would you consider incorporating a recruitment ‘bot' in your hiring process? A lot of recruitment business owners might be apprehensive about doing so, as it poses the risk of diminishing the ‘human touch' in the process. On the other hand, Betsy's team is leveraging a "digital employee," specifically a digital recruiter, to enhance their hiring process. This AI-powered recruiter can call and chat with candidates, helping to screen large volumes of applicants more efficiently while maintaining a personalized experience. Unlike traditional chatbots or automated emails, this digital recruiter has a live voice and engages in real conversations, making it feel more human-like. Some of the outlined advantages of this investment include: Speed & Efficiency – The digital recruiter can process large volumes of candidates quickly, helping the team sift through hundreds of applicants without delays. Candidate Engagement – One of the biggest complaints in recruitment is ghosting—candidates never hearing back from employers. A digital recruiter ensures consistent communication, so candidates stay informed. 24/7 Availability – Unlike human recruiters who work business hours, the digital employee can operate around the clock, allowing candidates to engage at their convenience—whether during a lunch break or late at night. Tech Stack and AI Trends Betsy and I also talked about the tech stacks they are using and the recent trends in technology that recruiters can use to either improve and simplify their processes, improve candidate and client engagement, and manage performance and KPIs for their employees. We have listed below some tools that you may already be familiar with or others you might consider exploring: Applicant Tracking & CRM Systems Loxo – Legacy ATS/CRM system Tracker – New ATS & CRM for front/middle office operations with better API integrations AI-Powered Communication Tools CloudCall – AI-driven text and voice communication for candidate and client interactions. Digital Recruiters (AI Recruiters) – AI-powered virtual recruiters that conduct initial screenings via calls and chats. Note-Takers & Meeting Assistants Otter.ai – AI-powered transcription and meeting summarization. Fathom – AI note-taking with advanced meeting insights. Fireflies – AI transcription, summarization, and team collaboration. Copilot (Microsoft) – AI assistant for Teams meetings and documentation. Quill – AI-driven note-taking tool specifically for recruiters. Gong – AI-powered call analysis and coaching for sales and recruiter conversations. AI-Driven Data Management & Automation VMS Integrations – Automates job order creation and updates within the ATS. AI-Powered Contact Management – Automatically updates candidate and client contact information. AI for Remote Team Collaboration & Coaching AI Call Coaching (via GPT or Gong) – Analyzes recruiter and sales calls for performance improvement. Remarkable (Digital Notepad) – Converts handwritten notes to digital format for easy CRM integration. These tools collectively enhance efficiency, automation, and candidate engagement in recruitment businesses. Creating a Culture of Strong Team Collaboration Despite being tech-heavy, Betsy and her team still invest in ensuring that their connection and culture as a team is as collaborative as can be. With a team of 30, mostly working remotely, seamless collaboration and teamwork are essential. This is how she summarizes their collaboration: “We, I will say, first of all, we welcome all ideas. It doesn't matter if you are someone who's been on our team for one week or someone who's been on our team for one year or you've been our first employee who's been here 10 years. Everybody brings unique at different perspective perspectives. This week, Madison is joined by National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame Director of Research and Education, Bethany Dodson and Information Literacy Librarian and Professor at Middle Tennessee State University, Jason Vance to discuss 2024 Cowgirl Honoree, The Pack Horse Library Project. The Pack Horse Library Project ran from 1936 to 1943, with librarians on horseback traveling 10,000 square miles of rugged eastern Kentucky to provide reading materials to isolated families, some of the hardest hit by the Great Depression. The WPA “book women” rode out at least twice a month, in all kinds of weather, with each route covering 100 to 120 miles a week. At its height, the program helped serve almost 100,000 people. By the time the Pack Horse Library Project ended in 1943, it had made a lasting impact on the people of rural Appalachia. At the tender age of 10, Melba notes that it was then that she was introduced to music and that “I didn't have any music in my life before my mother married my stepfather. He introduced music into our home and into my life.” From that moment forward, Melba began to develop her 5-octave, note-holding soprano that would soon bring audiences to their feet. The Newark, NJ Arts High School graduate started doing recording sessions after a chance meeting with singer/songwriter/composer Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson). That opportunity in the studio led Melba in the company of the Broadway musical “HAIR!” First in the ensemble of the show, Melba's name was tossed into the conversation when actress Diane Keaton left the show and Melba took the female lead and broke all the rules, being the first Black woman to replace a white actress in a featured role on Broadway. The week of December 11, 2024 on The Metallica Report… Steff and Renée are getting ready for the fourth biennial Helping Hands Concert & Auction on Friday, December 13, by speaking with two of this year's honorees. First, Renée catches up with actress Maggie Baird (aka the mother of Billie Eilish and Finneas) from Support + Feed. If that organization sounds familiar, it's because Support + Feed joined us on the 2024 North American M72 run of shows, spreading the word about their work changing the food equity system through education around a plant-based diet. Next, Renée and Steff enjoy an in-depth chat with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament, who discusses his non-profit organization, Montana Pool Service. MPS works to build world-class skate parks and connect youth communities in Montana, Washington, and South Dakota. Though unavailable to join the podcast this week, we still get to hear from Father Greg Boyle, the founder of our third honoree this year, Homeboy Industries. By providing hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated people, Homeboy Industries has evolved into the largest gang intervention, rehab, and re-entry program in the world.
