DiabetesPowerShow #172 "Sometimes it feels like the whole world is falling apart." Special guest: Dr. William Polonsky This episode of DiabetesPowerShow #172 was recorded on Monday, November 6, 2017. This show is not directly related to Diabetes. It was, however, inspired by emails from a significant number of DPS listeners, going through some very hard times as a result of recent tragic events. We made the decision to postpone the release of this show. We felt that it was too soon to publish some of the content. One of the terrible events happened only 24 hours before we recorded the show. We share listener experiences with the recent hurricanes in Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and the mass-shootings in Las Vegas (our home base) and Texas. This episode is dedicated to and in support of the people who continue to feel the effects of these tragic events. Our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. God bless you all.

On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie, Lori, and Chris welcome Dr. Travis Stork. In 2016, Dr. Travis Stork, ER physician and host of the Emmy Award-winning show The Doctors, joined a nationwide movement – For Your SweetHeart™: Where Diabetes and Heart Disease Meet – to raise awareness of the link between type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The initiative seeks to encourage those with type 2 diabetes to know their risk and speak to their healthcare provider, for the sake of their health and the people they cherish the most.   Dr. Stork partnered with For Your SweetHeart, in remembrance of his grandfather, who had type 2 diabetes, to urge people with type 2 diabetes to take the Heart You Quiz, and sign-up for more information to learn more about their risk for heart disease. Because of his grandfather’s experience, Dr. Stork learned about the importance of managing the condition, before he ever became a doctor. As a grandchild of someone who was directly impacted by type 2 diabetes, Dr. Stork shares his personal connection to type 2 diabetes – his grandfather’s story – and why this campaign is close to his heart. This Grandparents Day (September 10), we encourage you to help educate your family members and loved ones about the critical link between type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to a national survey, more than half (52 percent) of adults with type 2 diabetes are unaware of their increased risk for heart disease and related life-threatening events, such as heart attack, stroke or even death.   To learn more about the For Your SweetHeart movement, which was developed and sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company, as well as take and share the Heart You Quiz, please visit https://www.foryoursweetheart.com.

On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie Cherry, Chris Daniel, and Lori Cherry welcome Doris Hobbs. Doris Hobbs has a passion for the fashion from a very glamorous time in our history. She loves all things 1940’s and 50’s, especially the new Christian Dior styles from 1947. She brings back this glamour on her website, RichInLoveFashion.com capturing stunning images from the golden age of Hollywood. Doris is thriving with Type One Diabetes. At age 33, the first thing Doris realized after been diagnosed as a Type One Diabetic, was that she had two options: She could allow it to control her life, or find the unbinding courage from within the tragedy; She chose courage. The next few days were consumed with perplexed emotions, mostly of denial, pooled from the self-belief that she could be a rare case and mysteriously cured. She was given a new role and lifestyle as a Type One Diabetic. She immediately chose to not wear it as a sympathy garment; instead, she would rather re-fashion how others perceive such a life-altering disorder. Aside from a select group of family and friends that knew of her health struggles, she somehow managed, two days after the news was confirmed, to conduct an on-location photo-shoot for her website, Rich in Love Fashion. She knew, without a doubt, at that moment, she had a purpose on earth, and found herself more determined to not allow Diabetes to hinder her little girl dreams. We, as a society, have a tendency of suppressing our fears, as mastering those can be difficult, and takes large amounts of will and courage to look in the mirror and say, “I will succeed; I can do this!” The relationship between one’s journey of self-growth and courage tends to evoke feelings of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, but allowing such emotions to take center stage is moral injustice. At birth, each and every one of us is embedded with a purpose or talent, which provides us the blueprints of our life’s story, which must be written and shared. “From all of my lessons and blessings in the last 2 1/2 years, I’ve formed an organic sense of how to live an authentic life that channels pure gratitude and glamour”. Since being diagnosed a Type One Diabetic, Doris has provided media exposure for organizations such as: Beyond Type 1, JDRF, American Diabetes Association, Diabetes Alive, and has been featured on 101.7 KKIQ, 92.1 KKDV, Diabetes Connections, and Diabetes Late Nite for her advocate efforts.

To help us with that question, we welcome Dr. Christopher Jacobs, the CEO and Chief Research Engineer for Genteel. He promises that the Genteel Lancing Device will challenge everything you’ve come to believe about a lancing device. During the show, Charlie, for the first time, successfully accomplished alternate site testing, using the Genteel device. The camera clicked, as he learned that this new lancing device allows you to poke your skin once, and return to the same spot throughout the day, and draw blood without actually piercing your skin again. The unit creates a vacuum, so you can flip the lancet in the device (the sharp part) away from the skin, and do multiple blood draws from just one poke. He successfully drew blood 4 times during the show, but only stuck himself once...Charlie is now a fan of the Genteel. Dr. Christopher Jacobs is the Chief Research Engineer in the development of Genteel, and holder of 75 United States and international patents; new medical devices and instrumentation through Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Biomedical engineer, designed and assisted in patenting world’s first variable rate cardiac pacemaker; Advanced Medical Technology (AMTEK), 1969, patented. Developed Control Systems for Artificial Kidneys (Renal Clearance); University of Southern California, 1964-1965. Devised Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Dream Detector; USC County Hospital, 1966. Designed Electric Current Instrumentation to Treat Skin Disorders and electronic perspiration inhibition equipment; General Medical Corporation, 1972, patented. Set Up & Organized Medical Laboratories; USC Main Campus, 1964-1966. Doctoral Dissertation: “The Determinants of Maximum Expiratory Flow” (predicts how rapidly air can be expelled from lungs); results confirmed by experiment. A letter from a DiabetesPowerShow listener... Hello Diabetes Power Show, A quick note to say thank you for the time you take to educate the diabetic community. My wife and I have learned so much from your pod cast and guests over the past six months. I am a type 1 diabetic who uses an Omnipod insulin pump and CGM. I developed pancreatitis five years ago and was required to go into the hospital every three weeks to have stents placed into my pancreatic ducts to move forward with simple life activities. After eighteen months, my doctor at the University of Colorado linked me to an excellent team at the University of Minnesota to perform a Total Pancreatectomy and Auto Islet Transplantation. The surgery was 17 hours and my islet cells were transplanted into my liver. I had a 40% chance the cells would take and I would not need insulin or be diabetic. I was also informed before the surgery that I had tested positive for a GAD antibody and there was an increased chance that my system would attack the transplanted Islet cells and I would become diabetic. As you can see, my cells did not survive and I am now a type one diabetic. However, I fully accepted the outcome and entered into the surgery expecting to come out being a diabetic. I am glad to say that the pain is gone and that is half the battle. In addition to being type 1, I will have to take enzymes for digestion for the rest of my life. I started out taking injections but quickly found that it was impossible to stop some of the lows and 12 months later, I switched to an insulin pump. My lows tend to be a bit different then a normal diabetic. I do not have the same ability to take sugar and recover from a low within 15 or 30 minutes. At times, it may take 30-50 carbs to move my BG up 30-40 points. The recovery process from my lows are different every time. My CGM has saved my life a minimum of 6 times and I am thankful to have the technology. I am also thankful to have an insulin pump that can be suspended to stop the lows. My A1C has ranged from 6.9 - 9.8 and is now at 7.2.  I eat close to the same food each day and my diet is low fat and low carb due to my impaired ability to digest certain foods. I live off of Quest nutrition Shakes (link below) and Quest Nutrition bars. The bars are low sugar, low net carbs and high in fiber and protein (and they are good). The shakes are low sugar, low carb, low fat and high in protein. Even non diabetics who like to eat healthy enjoy the bars and shakes! I have also recently discovered Paleo bars (Sunflower butter) and the bars are also low sugar, low net carbs and taste good. My success is due to the love and support of my wife. I would not be where I am today without her continuous care and concern for my well being. She has been with me every step of the way and has never given up on me or my health. I see the stress the disease causes her and she worries about my overall health and longevity of life. We have been married for 24 years and we hope the future blesses us with many, many more.   I have been fortunate enough to have excellent doctors who respond to e-mail, phone calls and are experts in their professions. At some point, they may add value to your show and have the ability to help others who listen to your POD cast.. After all they have been successful keeping me alive and when you consider I have no pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, appendix, no pain and am a type 1 diabetic… That is no small feat… Through the process, I have found that no one is the same and we all have different struggles with the same goals in mind. To live a normal life, love our families and contribute to society.  Thanks again for providing such amazing insight into the ever changing world of diabetes. You are helping the diabetic community in more ways than you will ever know! Sincerely, Steve and Christy Ewing

In celebration of this milestone, we indulge ourselves, as we reminisce about the amazing adventure this show has been for us. We have met so many incredible people from all around the world in the Diabetes community. We have traveled from coast to coast, attending Diabetes events as ambassadors for not only DiabetesPowerShow, but for the Diabetes community at large. On August 28, 2006, DiabetesPowerShow was born. When we started, we were not 100% sure there would be a show number 2, or that we would be around the following month. Here we are, August 28, 2016, and we are going stronger than ever! Very few podcasts that involve 2 or more co-hosts survive more than a few episodes. We started in the very beginning of the new technology called ‘podcasting’. Out of the first wave of thousands of podcasts, created at that time, covering a variety of topics, (now there are millions) there are just a handful of remaining ‘original' podcasters. We proudly count ourselves among that small group of people. The five of us have developed a bond and friendship that is unbreakable. After 10 years, whether the microphones are turned on or off, we can almost read each other’s minds, and finish each other’s sentences. DiabetesPowerShow is the longest consistently-running Diabetes related podcast in the world. We are committed to taking this show into the future, as we all work towards a cure for this thing called Diabetes.

He attended undergraduate studies at Michigan State University, and holds a degree in Zoo and Aquarium Science. He then attended veterinary school, also at Michigan State, and graduated in 2011. Nicholas originally went into veterinary medicine because he wanted to be a zoo veterinarian. However, as things and interests changed, he decided that he wanted to become a pathologist. Post veterinary school, he attended and began a Residency in Anatomic Pathology at Cornell University. After approximately one year, Nicholas decided that pathology was not where he wanted to be in the veterinary medicine world. He moved back home, where he spent another year in Detroit, practicing small animal medicine. Nicholas moved to Las Vegas three years ago, and has been practicing at Desert Inn Animal Hospital ever since. Currently, he is preparing for, and studying to sit for his board accreditation, through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. When not working, Nicholas spends a lot of his free time volunteering, and being with friends. He is highly involved with The Desert Tortoise Foundation, as well as The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and with Desert Tortoise Research and Health Monitoring. A fun time was had by all.  About the Leavitt Family Jason and Michelle have been married for 18 years, and have three children; Jace the oldest son is 16, Erick the middle son is 13, and the youngest is daughter Oaklie who is 11. Their diabetic journey started in November 2011, when Michelle took Erick to the doctor, for what she believed was a urinary tract infection, due to frequent urination. Erick was diagnosed with T1D, which opened up a whole world the family knew nothing about. Over the next couple of years, the family worked to control Erick’s blood sugars, while learning all they could about T1D. This led them to become very involved with the JDRF. Almost exactly three years later, in November of 2014, their daughter, Oaklie, was also diagnosed with T1D, after exhibiting similar signs to what Erick had shown. Although mentally and emotionally difficult to comprehend having another T1D, they were confident in maintaining a healthy and normal life for now two of their children. The Leavitts have taken a positive outlook, and learned to embrace their new life of living with T1D. They continue to be involved with the JDRF, as both Erick and Oaklie are Youth Ambassadors for the organization, as well as participating in the One Walk yearly. This year, both Jason and Erick will be participating in the JDRF Ride to Cure in Tucson, Arizona, which is a 104 mile bike ride to support T1D. Upon learning that Oaklie was also T1D, one of the changes that had to be made was their walk team name, which up to that point was Team diabErick. A party was held with all of their walk team supporters, as a kick off to introduce the new team name.

In practice, this means bringing together real-time health data (blood sugars, activity levels, food choices), providing contextually relevant education, and sustaining positive behaviors through social support.  David's other passions include promoting entrepreneurship and economic development in Northeast Ohio. He is President of the Hebrew Free Loan Association, a non-profit organization that has been providing interest-free loans to responsible individuals since 1904.
