It's often been said that they became legends without ever becoming stars. The Replacements' last album was released in 1990, but their visionary work profoundly informed the artists who would roar into the mainstream that decade. August 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the Replacements' ferocious, strident, snarly debut album Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, and so, we delve into the band's wild history, take stock of the fearless, inspired way they created music together, and appreciate the improbable-seeming legacy that began with that breathless collection of short, super-charged bursts of deceptively poetic expression. Joining us for the ride: Grammy-winning Replacements biographer Bob Mehr; Rhino Records' Jason Jones; Rheostatics' Dave Bidini; Art Bergmann; Faith Healer's Jessica Jalbert; and Shaye Zadravec. Edmonton's Jessica Jalbert started Faith Healer because she wanted to be in a band rather than be known as a just singer-songwriter. I shared a few beers with Faith Healer's Jessica Jalbert and Renny Wilson in the lobby of Vancouver's Patricia Hotel . It was a stressful day for Faith Healer. Their tour van had a broken and this was a problem on a February tour. Why did Jessica not want to be known as a singer-songwriter? How did Montreal producer and fellow Mint Records artist Renny Wilson join the band? What's it like working in a record store in 2018 and what does this mean to Jessica's music? You'll have to listen to find out! Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Faith Healer, Try ;-) (2017) "Try ;-)" 2) Renny Wilson, Sugarglider (2013) "Could've It Been Me?" 3) Faith Healer, Try ;-) (2017) "Waiting" 4) Faith Healer, Try ;-) (2017) "Sufferin' Creature" ALL songs CANCON

Ria Mae has a brand new EP and is fresh off of a very special show during the 2017 Halifax Pop Explosion that saw her performing with Symphony Nova Scotia amidst her cross-country Scott Vs. Ria tour with our pal Scott Helman. The new EP, My Love, takes listeners on a journey from post-relationship heartache to healing. We chat with her about all of that and more. With Faith Healer's recently-released sophomore LP Try;-), Jessica Jalbert has formally welcomed Renny Wilson to the fold as a full-time bandmate. She speaks with Mike about the album, its creation at Wilson's Montreal studio, the musical relationship the two share, straying from the "folk singer" label, and more. Finally, Edmonton's The Royal Foundry is an art-pop quartet with the husband and wife team of Jared Salte and Bethany Schumacher at its core. The two tell us about how their personal relationship extends into the creative sphere, how their home city and its music scene has shaped their sound, and more.
Jeff takes over from Marvin to chat with Jessica Jalbert of Faith Healer. They talk about Faith Healer becoming a duo with the addition of Renny Wilson, the difficulties of being a band in Edmonton and what it means to be a part of Mint Records. Then Jessica tries to start a beef with War On Drugs in the rapid-fire segment. This week’s featured act on TransCanada Music West (8pm MT Friday) is Jom Comyn, in concert in CKUA’s Performance Space. If there were a soundtrack to those cold, dark Canadian winters, it would sound something like Jom Comyn’s latest full length record In The Dark on 99, All The Time, All Time Time. That record made our list of the Top 40 most played releases in 2014 on these airwaves. Last year, Jom followed that critically-acclaimed record up with a new EP The Black Pits. Both under his given name of Jim Cuming, and as Jom Comyn. Jim has released a slough of albums ranging from traditional folk to experimental psychedelia. He always has an incredible touch with melody, and a penchant for affecting lyrics. This week’s set features Tom Murray on bass, Andy Mulcair on drums, Jessica Jalbert on guitar, and Jim Cuming, aka Jom Comyn himself on vocals and guitar.
This week on TransCanada Music West we feature Faith Healer, the musical project of Edmonton singer-songwriter Jessica Jalbert. The debut record by Faith Healer, 'Cosmic Troubles' became the most-played record on CKUA in 2015. Beyond the hallowed halls of CKUA, the release received praise from taste-makers like Rolling Stone, Stereogum, and Pitchfork. This week on the show, Jessica and her band perform tracks from the explosive and introspective new album before a live studio audience in CKUA's performance space. Track list: Infinite Return No Car Again Acid Canonized Fools Rush In Angel Eyes Until the World Cosmic Troubles Universe Paris Green
Eighteen years. Twelve albums. Two gold records. Thirty-plus transatlantic treks. Fifteen Top 40 singles. Arena tours across 11 countries with Guns N Roses. A video trilogy starring Elijah Wood and Ralph Macchio. A feature- length documentary. An oral-history biography. Personal invites from Lemmy to join Motörhead on the road (and on water, for the 2014 Motörboat cruise). For most bands, that would amount to a hell of a career. For Toronto trio Danko Jones, it’s called “warming up." The band is fresh from the release of Fire Music, produced by Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Monster Truck, Metric) and featuring 11 fresh tracks, and is now amidst a slew of global dates. As for Faith Healer, led by principal songwriter Jessica Jalbert, following the success of 2011’s self-released solo debut, Brother Loyola, the introspective songwriter set to work on penning another collection of inward looking dream pop played with laid back bravado. Engineered under the masterful watch of whip-smart producer—and fellow Mintie—Renny Wilson, the two bonded over their mutual affection for dreamy ‘60s garage rock and swaggering ‘70s singles while in the studio. Hinting at a slightly spacier sound, Cosmic Troubles will arrive March 31st. Finally, CM contributor Michael Saracino speaks about his new initiative, The Globe Series, which finds the musician and producer travelling to different cities around the world - from Vancouver to Sydney, New York to London - filming local songwriters and aiding in their long-distance collaborations.
