ROUGH PATCH! After years of slowly building up the Smugglers into something one might consider 'successful', the house of cards collapses when two members of the band quit. Upheaval at both Mint and Lookout Records doesn't help matters.
Vivek Shraya is a constantly churning force for creativity. She's an author, playwright, filmmaker, a professor of English Literature, a poet, an active champion of BIPOC, women- and femme-identifying artists though initiatives she's launched, and she's an absolute joy on social media. Vivek's new album is Baby, You're Projecting, out now via Mint Records. Her debut label release offers a brilliantly crafted, heart-on-sleeve glimpse into her own personal experiences and perspectives. It traces deeply felt, masterfully created musical stories that ring so true, we can probably all see ourselves in them somewhere; they feel like they have something important to say to all of us. Vivek's been writing songs since age 13 and crafting albums for a good 20 years now. Always at the core of her art is personal experience, offering a wide range of often very frank, unflinching perspectives. Being an Albertan of South Asian heritage, growing up queer, being trans, making pop music into her 40s - all are experiences which have in some way inspired or informed her creativity over the years. Some songs on her latest album are responses to societal issues like pervasive toxic masculinity and sexism, ongoing colonial attitudes, and the takedown culture fostered by of our extremely online current moment. Other songs on the record are simply about friends, family, and heartbreak. While some moments do feel heartbreaking, others are powerfully affirming, even anthemic! She and longtime collaborator/producer James Bunton have hit a whole new level of sophistication in crafting this album, and Vivek is digging deeper than ever. The album is also accompanied by a companion short film that weaves some of these musical stories into a larger, visually spectacular arc. This is Vivek Shraya | Singing Free and Loud! Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Host: Grant Stovel | Graphics: Shaun Friesen | Music: Doug Hoyer

Vancouver's Mint Records yesterday released Soon-Yin Lee and Adam Litovitz jooj two album. Behind the release, there’s a very personal story – the love and loss between Sook and Adam. "When we were making the song ‘Wrecking Heart’, Adam and I looked at each other, blown away by this song that was like nothing we’d ever written. It began with a supercharged sonic fragment he made that became the foundation of an unapologetic banger of a song that possessed and moved through us. We blasted it on the stereo, danced and air-guitared to it. Unconsciously, our lyrics seemed to telegraph our separation. “It sounds like a break up song,” he said, much to our disbelief at a time when we were very much together. But life challenges ended up pushing us in different directions. Though separated, we remained best friends, holding out hope that we would make our way back to each other. Adam landed a job scoring a TV series and I worked on our album, incorporating his notes. He said that he looked forward to playing cathartic meltdown live shows with me. But that was not to be. Adam is no longer here. I believe he exists on other planes, in those who love him, and in our music, in his music, drawings and writing. With this album, ‘jooj two’, I pick up the pieces of this Wrecking Heart, honoured to share our music." - Sook-Yin Lee Adam took his own life. Sook-Yin patiently takes us through what happened and how it shaped the songs and her life. And yes, even though all this, we share smiles and laughs. I’ve known Sook-Yin a long time... I think it shows in the discussion. Follow Sook-Yin Lee Instagram • Facebook • Twitter • YouTube • Bandcamp • Spotify • Apple

Edmonton's Jessica Jalbert started Faith Healer because she wanted to be in a band rather than be known as a just singer-songwriter. I shared a few beers with Faith Healer's Jessica Jalbert and Renny Wilson in the lobby of Vancouver's Patricia Hotel . It was a stressful day for Faith Healer. Their tour van had a broken and this was a problem on a February tour. Why did Jessica not want to be known as a singer-songwriter? How did Montreal producer and fellow Mint Records artist Renny Wilson join the band? What's it like working in a record store in 2018 and what does this mean to Jessica's music? You'll have to listen to find out! Mint Records fans were thrilled to tune into the Netflix and CW TV show Riverdale and spot a Tough Age poster above the bed of main character Archie Andrews. Vancouver's favorite indie pop band was now a part of that show's world of sex, murder and intrigue. Although Tough Age started as a Vancouver band, the band recently reformed back east when founding members Jarrett and Penny moved to Toronto, adding old friend Jesse on drums. Which Tough Age song does Archie need to hear the most? What are the band's crazy Riverdale fan theories? Who are the New Zealand band The Clean and why are Tough Age such big fans? What's it like to stand in the crowd before your set and hear people in the crowd talk smack about you? Which Tough Age song came from a cursed band? Will a mysterious stranger interrupt our interview? Which Tough Age song is about Jarrett's frustration with the Vancouver scene? I met up with the core of Monomyth, Josh Salter and Seamus Dalton right before the annual Mint Records Ridiculously Early Christmas Party in 2015. They wanted me to hold this interview until their new record was ready to come out. Finally the new record, Happy Pop Family, comes out November 4, 2016 on Mint Records. Why'd it take so long? Josh and Seamus moonlight in slacker-rock band, Nap Eyes--Josh is Nap Eyes' bassist and Seamus is the drummer. When I hung out with Josh and Seamus, they were staying at a secret band house in East Vancouver. I walked in the door and my jaw dropped: there were crushed PBR cans all over the living room, covering the table, floor and couches. So we each cracked open another beer and started to talk. Josh and Seamus were just the right kind of buzzed for a hilarious conversation. Fifteen years after the release of their last album, iconic Winnipeg two-piece Duotang -- best-known for their late-90s Mint Records output -- are back with a new release coming in 2016! Rod Slaughter (bass/vocals) and Sean Allum (drums) talk about gettin' the band back together, their new record, a bit of history and that pesky "mod" label that critics have always used to describe their sound. Mixed in with the interview are rough versions of some new Duotang songs, some old classics, and a live performance at the end!

When Chris Connelly from Edmonton's Hot Panda answered my call, he had no idea he was supposed to be doing an interview. In fact, Hot Panda‘s tour van had just just died and he was putting the license plate on their new van. Chris was a really good sport. He didn't even flinch when I suggested we play a little game of kill, fuck or marry with his fellow Mint Records stars Shane (from The Awkward Stage), Paul from (Young & Sexy) and Becky from (The Pack A.D.) Definitely one of my most fun interviews of this year!!! Tracks played on the show... 1) Hot Panda, How Come I'm Dead? "Mindlessnesslessness" 2) Hot Panda, How Come I'm Dead? On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, host James Shotwell chats with Near Mint Records' co-founders James Cassar and Corey Purvis. Together, the three discuss what it's like running a record label in 2015, as well as the numerous ways Near Mint is working to stand out from their competition. The conversation eventually turns to the future, which is when Near Mint's leaders share some thoughts on what they plan to accomplish and how they are going to make it all happen. If you ever thought about starting a label, or if you just want to know the realities of launching a business in music today, this is one episode you cannot miss!
Monomyth is a really cool band from Halifax that make a hazy, gritty kind of pop music. Their washed out, psych-rock-tinged new album is called Saturnalia Regalia! and it’s out July 22 via Mint Records.
