In 2017 musician and author Dave Bidini was inspired to start up a community paper in his west end Toronto neighbourhood. It was a labour of love and, with the help of his team and community, the West End Phoenix was born. The paper, and now the WEP's office and event space, bring people, family and friends together through shared experiences and stories. Speaking of stories, Dave is a great storyteller and we are thrilled to have him on the show.

Dave Bidini is a musician, songwriter, author, journalist, publisher, and sports enthusiast. Most people know Dave as the beloved front man of Canada's art rock darlings, Rheostatics. Tim Vesely is a bassist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, and sound engineer. The Canada vs USSR eight game hockey tournament of 1972 galvanized the nation 50 years ago this month. One of the standouts for Team Canada was Montreal Canadiens defenseman Serge Savard. Sixteen million Canadians, out of a nation of 22 million, watched the final game. Here is something I never realized back when I watched the series on TV with my high school pals: Canada never lost a game where Savard was in the lineup. He went 4 wins, one tie. A hairline fracture mid-way in the series kept him out of two losses, and a bad decision by coach Harry Sinden sidelined him for the opening blowout loss.Savard, proud owner of ten Stanley Cup rings,  looks back on the series with passion and  insight. Paul Linklater is a guitarist/singer/songwriter whom I've had the pleasure of knowing for about 25 years. I first met Paul in Brandon Manitoba when I recorded his band "gigvest". He flew to Toronto to mix his album with me and eventually moved there to pursue a life as a professional musician. Apart from solo work, Paul plays in Dave Bidini's "Bidini Band". Paul also has been teaching guitar for most of his life. Paul is a good soul and I'm glad he's doing well in these crazy times! Dave Bidini, an author of 13 books and founding member of the Canadian band the Rheostatics, joins producer Michael O'Connell to discuss his latest venture, the monthly West End Phoenix newspaper in Toronto, featuring pieces from award-winning authors, writers, playwrights and poets who live in the neighborhood.

Listen as American writer, Jennifer Egan, talks to music and book journalist, Garvia Bailey, about the process of writing historical fiction and creating characters that are real and believable - whether they are a woman diver bucking conventions in 1920s New York (Manhattan Beach) or a 1980s rock and roll executive in A Visit from the Goon Squad. In this 18 minute discussion, Egan talks about how she creates these characters from the past, what research she does and how the issues from her own life are subtlely embedded in her work. Jennifer Egan is the author of five previous books of fiction: A Visit from the Goon Squad, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; The Keep; the story collection Emerald City; Look at Me, a National Book Award Finalist; and The Invisible Circus. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, Granta, McSweeney's, and The New York Times Magazine. Garvia Bailey is a regular host for TPL's Bram and Bluma Appel Salon series, having interviewed Roxane Gay, Dave Bidini and others, and is the former host of Good Morning Toronto on JazzFM.
