With information overflow for Veterans, Servicemembers and their Families, we are blessed to have LTC (R) Joseph “JJ” Montanaro, Relationship Director, Military Advocacy Group at USAA join us for an enlightening episode about financial readiness. JJ breaks down some key USAA initiatives and pillars that support the entire family and help prepare them for life after service. In 1922, when 25 Army officers met in San Antonio and decided to insure each other's vehicles, they couldn't have imagined that their tiny organization would one day serve millions of members and become one of the only fully integrated financial services organizations in America. The Blended Retirement System (BRS) Opt-in period is coming to an end. For many military Servicemembers, that means a decision has to be made. Are you staying in the Legacy System or are you opting into the BRS? In this show, I’m talking with JJ Montanaro from USAA to discuss what the military community needs to consider when making their BRS Opt-in decision.
Today Ellie and Bethany hop in the car on a road trip to meet JJ Montanaro to talk about planning for the future. On the way, they discuss saving money on travel—from road trips to International trips, there are a lot of great resources out there to help you. JJ suggests to have a plan when saving: Start Early, Start Small, and Stay Committed. He touches on deterrents to saving money, having a stash of cash for an Emergency Fund, long term goals like Retirement, home down payment, vacation, then moves onto having savings accounts earmarked for specific goals, what percentage should go into savings, what to look for when it comes to BRS. Once Ellie and Bethany get back to the Money Millhouse, they talk about their own savings goals, the importance of an Emergency Fund, and finish on why serving the Military is so near and dear to their hearts.

There are a lot of initiatives out there focused on financial education. Remember back in January we spoke with Gina about Women's Money Week? One thing that I want to be doing more of is helping to raise awareness of these campaigns that already exist. In this bonus episode we talk with JJ Montanaro and Andrew Porch from USAA about Military Saves Week which is a part of America Saves Week. We talk about what it is, the importance of this campaign, some success stories, and what USAA has done internally within their company (which is pretty cool). Even though the official week happened February 27th-March 4th you can still take the pledge through the end of March. I've taken the pledge, will you take the pledge with me?
