Born in Grand Junction, Colorado, our guest's story begins in the rugged working-class towns of the American West and South—places where grit wasn't optional, it was survival. Raised in a coal mining family, with both parents working under his grandfather and a father who spent years as a roughneck, he grew up surrounded by hard labor, discipline, and resilience. Life wasn't always easy. His father battled alcoholism and could be harsh at times, but through the chaos came lessons in toughness, accountability, and perseverance. Sports like hockey, baseball, and football became an outlet during an otherwise grounded, blue-collar upbringing that would shape the man he would later become. In December 2004, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, beginning a journey that would forever alter the course of his life. After completing infantry school and Airborne training at Fort Benning, he earned his place as a sniper with 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry. Deployed to Southeast Baghdad in 2006, he endured the brutal realities of combat, surviving multiple near-death experiences and earning two Purple Hearts after a bombing and a devastating VBIED attack on his patrol base. The scars of war followed him home—both visible and invisible—and the battle for survival didn't end when the deployment did. What came next was a downward spiral few saw coming. Struggling to adjust after the military, one bad decision led to another—eventually pulling him into addiction, drug dealing, and a prison sentence that could have defined the rest of his life. But in June 2017, everything changed when he got sober from opiates and began rebuilding from the ground up. After his release, he met the woman who would become his wife, started a family, and rediscovered his faith. Today, while continuing to battle a liver disease connected to illnesses contracted during deployment, he stands as a living example of resilience, redemption, and the possibility of rebuilding a life after trauma, addiction, and war. In this episode, Madelyn O'Farrell sits down with Juan Aparicio, Co-Founder and CEO of Reshape Automation, to explore how AI agents are transforming industrial companies and what it really takes to deploy them successfully. Juan shares his journey from Siemens to Silicon Valley startups and ultimately founding Reshape to tackle the gap between massive automation potential and low actual robot adoption in U.S. manufacturing. They dive into the realities of robotics-as-a-service, why so many automation projects end up in the “robot graveyard,” and the critical role of process expertise and vendor partnerships. Nate Amidon: Why Scrum Master Success Means Owning the Entire Idea-to-Deployed Pipeline Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. "Success for a Scrum Master is maximizing value of the product through the organization. That's a full stop statement." - Nate Amidon Running a company of contract Scrum Masters gives Nate a unique perspective on what success actually looks like. For him, it comes down to one thing: are you increasing the value of the product through the system? Everything else is either a leading or lagging indicator. Practically, this means starting with the most fundamental question: why does your team exist? Nate suggests asking three team members separately what the team does and who they do it for — and checking whether the answers match. Once you have clarity on purpose, you can work with product and the organization to figure out how to measure whether you're getting closer. But here's where Nate pushes boundaries: he believes a Scrum Master's scope isn't limited to the Scrum team. If success is measured by value flowing through the system, then you have to take ownership of the entire idea-to-deployed pipeline — product prioritization, cross-team dependencies, QA processes, CI/CD, release schedules. You happen to work as a Scrum Master on a team, but your responsibility extends to anywhere value gets stuck. In this episode, we refer to Vasco's OTOG (One Team, One Goal) principle and Nate's previous episode about the brief-execute-debrief cycle. Self-reflection Question: If someone asked three different members of your team what the team exists to do and who they do it for, would the answers match — and have you checked recently? Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Meme Retro Nate's favorite retrospective format might surprise you: the Meme Retro. Give everyone 5-10 minutes to find a meme on the internet that describes the last sprint. Then go around the room, share the meme, and explain why you chose it. It sounds lighthearted — and it is — but that's exactly the point. As Vasco notes, "laughs per minute" is a great metric for retros, because when people are laughing, they can talk about serious issues without defensiveness. The memes give a different angle on what happened during the sprint, surfacing deeper feelings and patterns that traditional formats might miss. It's especially useful when teams are getting fatigued from running the same retro format over and over. [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

AI Chatbots appear to really be keen on using nuclear weapons in war game simulations—something like 95 percent of the time, according to a report published in late February.Over at King's College London, researchers had ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini form teams and play simulated war games against each other. Altogether, they played 21 games, and in 20 of the games, the systems reached for the button. During the experiment, none of the models ever chose to surrender—and instead, 95 percent of the time, the AI models chose to use nuclear weapons during the war.Let's go through the details of this study together.

President Trump has deployed hundreds of ICE agents to major U.S. airports to help overwhelmed TSA officers amid long security lines caused by the partial government shutdown. When asked whose idea it was, Trump proudly declared: “Mine." Democrats quickly fired back. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) held a press conference at Newark Liberty International Airport and said: “The message today is: Fund the TSA and get ICE out." Other Democrats echoed the criticism, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) warning that “untrained ICE agents” at checkpoints put travelers at risk and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) saying that “masked, armed police at travel checkpoints is a hallmark of dystopian movies" that creates chaos for political leverage. What do you think — smart move to keep airports moving, or reckless political stunt? Drop your thoughts below.

While the White House has deployed immigration agents to help with security at some airports, it appears the Twin Cities airport is not a part of that plan. Security wait times at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport have generally remained short while other airports have seen hourslong waits in recent weeks. That's as TSA workers go without pay amid a funding impasse.Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison yesterday joined his counterparts from 19 other Democratic-led states plus the District of Columbia in a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The states are challenging Trump Administration threats to cut funding.Safety concerns along a highway in the southern Twin Cities metro area are prompting transportation officials to hold a series of meetings. MnDOT says it's studying a 12-mile stretch of State Highway 3 — also known as Robert Trail — through Inver Grove Heights, Eagan and Rosemount. The goal is to identify safety improvements for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. MnDOT says it's looking at intersection and roadway designs to reduce the number of crashes and improve traffic flow in a growing part of the metro area.

Democracy Wins—Pentagon Loses. Another Fumble from Hegseth. Vietnam Vet Robert Mueller Dies. No Justice for Breonna Taylor. RIP, CBS Radio. Admiral James Stavridis is back for a master class on war, peace, and the future of American power at a moment when Donald Trump can do almost anything he wants with the most powerful military on earth. The former NATO Supreme Allied Commander joins host Paul Rieckhoff to break down Trump's war in Iran, the risks of escalation, what it would really mean to send Marines through the Strait of Hormuz, and how adversaries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are watching—and celebrating. Stavridis explains why cyber is the next battlefield, what AI-enabled cyberattacks could look like, and why offensive cyber tools in the hands of angry regimes should have every American's attention. They dig into Trump's deployment of ICE to airports amid a partial shutdown, the culture crisis inside ICE, and whether Trump is road-testing ICE as a domestic political weapon where he can't legally use the U.S. military. Stavridis lays out where checks on Trump's power might actually come from—courts, Congress, NATO, and the American people—and why he still believes in the possibility of a centrist, independent political movement (even as a registered independent himself). It's Manosphere Monday, March Madness is in full swing, St. John's is dancing into the Sweet 16, and Rieckhoff and Stavridis still find “something good” in Disney World, underdogs, and the young Americans now fighting and dying in Iran. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Pickup a copy of the Admiral's outstanding book: 2084 A Novel of Future Wars. . -Join IVA and stand up to Trump's Forever Wars. -Learn more about Paul's work to elect a new generation of independent leaders with Independent Veterans of America. -Learn more about American Veterans for Ukraine here. -Remember Independent is an Attitude. -Learn more about The Headstrong Project for Veterans, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and Department of Veterans Affairs resources in your area. Today's Headlines: Three weeks into the Iran "excursion" — Trump's word, not ours — and there's no end in sight. Trump claimed Iran asked for a ceasefire; Iran said that didn't happen. Either way, 5,000 more marines and three more warships are headed to the region, joining the 50,000 U.S. troops already there. Oil is stuck at $100 a barrel, every country Trump asked to help escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz said no, and the U.S. bombed Iran's Kharg Island oil hub — which Trump said he might hit "a few more times just for fun," as one does. Iran fired a missile at an Italian base in Iraq's Kurdistan region, a drone killed a French soldier in the same area, and Emmanuel Macron had to call Tehran to say that's unacceptable. At home, a federal judge blocked the DOJ's attempt to criminally investigate Fed Chair Jerome Powell, ruling it was a pretext to pressure the Fed on interest rates — the Trump administration is appealing. The FCC chair threatened to pull local TV licenses over Iran war coverage he doesn't like, and Trump threatened media outlets on social media for the same reason. Neither has real teeth yet, but that's sort of the point. Meanwhile, a viral six-hour deposition of two former DOGE employees revealed they used ChatGPT to identify 1,400 grants to cut — including ones for Black civil rights documentaries and Holocaust research — with zero government or academic experience between them. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration will collect a $10 billion fee from the TikTok deal — on an app valued at roughly $14 billion total. Palantir's CEO went on CNBC to brag that his AI will shift economic power away from educated women who vote Democratic. Kash Patel announced the FBI will now train with UFC fighters. Marco Rubio is on the witness list in his close friend's federal trial for acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Venezuela. A Florida Democrat won the Boca Raton mayoral race by one vote, and the Republican loser said he'd "sleep on" whether to accept the results. And a UCLA study found that diverse film casts outperform at the box office — which landed the same weekend the Oscars completely snubbed Sinners.
