"4:09 to 9:02" Boston To Oklahoma and New York CitiesBeyond the Bombingsby David HamelA newlywed couple were in the midst of unsuccessful fertility treatments at a nearby center during the time of the Oklahoma City bombing which occurred at 9:02 am on April 19, 1995. The personal heartbreak and simultaneous loss of 15 children at the day care center in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and its aftermath set a sorrowful resonating tone of great sadness, acceptance, and getting on with life for the veteran marathon runner and his wife. But the impact of the second aircraft at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 at 9:02:59 am assured that would not be so. That is, until the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013. The clock at the finish line during the first explosion reminded him of his first marathon time of 4:09 in 1990. That "Hey You" moment coupled with the death of an eight-year-old boy near the finish line and a very close date of the Oklahoma City bombing reignited long dormant reactions and emotions of 1995 and earlier life events. Thus began a passionate journey to reclaim the Boston and Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon finish lines in 2014 and 2016. This is the story of an Air Force Sergeant and his wife, of teddy bears and babies that weren't to be & ... and of letting go.David Hamel is a retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant serving over 30 years on active duty in aircraft maintenance and as Director of the Air Force Enlisted Heritage Research Institute in Montgomery, Alabama. He is a past Alabama State Commander of the Korea Defense Veterans of America and past Eastern District Commander of AMVETS, North Carolina. He has performed 175 Prisoner of War-Missing In Action (POW-MIA) remembrance ceremonies and has served as the state POW-MIA Chairman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Departments of Alabama and North Carolina, and is a past National Aide-de-Camp. He is also an All-State and All-American Post Commander. Dave is an Eagle Scout and served in scouting as a Troop Chartered Organization Representative, Eagle Scout advisor, and as State and National Scouter for the VFW.Completing 31 years of marathon racing, and locally known as the “Ray Road Runner,” Dave has finished 131 marathons in all 50 states, and has two Boston Marathon finishes. Nicknamed “Scrappy” in the Fort Bragg, NC ice hockey community, he is a bronze and silver medalist team winner of the annual North Carolina State Games .Dave is a motivational speaker on fitness and self-preservation, and Air Force history and heritage. He has also earned dual Masters Degrees: Human Resources Development, and Computer Resources and Information Management. He resides in Spring Lake, North Carolina with his wife Gloria, of 28 years.https://pageturner.us/bookstore/409-to-902-boston-to-oklahoma-and-new-york-citieshttps://linktr.ee/dghamel http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/22924pt1.mp3

Roswell. In this week's episode I am talking to Greg Lawson about his book 'Roswell: The After Action Report'.The Roswell Incident is possibly the most investigated and controversial UFO case in history. There are no shortages of beliefs and opinions to the actual events of this unusual happening. Dozens of corroborated witnesses and hundreds of professed witnesses have been interviewed, each with their varying degree of credibility. In Roswell: The After-Action Report, veteran detective Greg Lawson uses forensic statement analysis and his thousands of hours of training and experience to review the cultural influence, historical context, and eyewitness testimony of those closest involved. The results of his review prove once again, citizens should always be skeptical of those in charge.BioHave you ever experienced something you could not explain? A feeling, a presence, a voice or a vision? If so, you are not alone. Millions of people have reported such experiences and they often dismiss them as misunderstandings. Still others hastily attribute them to ghosts, spirits, hauntings, the paranormal or the supernatural. Doc calls our attention to the strange disappearance of civic organizations in America. Peaking in the 1960s, tiny villages and big cities bustled with volunteers of all ages to build parks, serve as crossing guards, hold free throw shooting contests for kids, work voting stations, and pass local knowledge from generation to generation. There was a time when people prioritized the time to gather at local restaurants to discuss ways to volunteer and improve their community. HISTORY. Civic organizations in the US were closely tied to church-affiliated groups (Knights of Columbus), fraternal organizations (Freemasons), and also unions. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is an organization of U.S. war veterans. And while VFW posts were practically in every community in America following WWII, membership is dwindling and posts have been closed and consolidated. “Per a 2021 article by Faith Bottum of the Wall Street Journal, “The VFW has around 1.5 million members, a drop of a million from 1992. The average age is 67, with 400,000 members over 80. The largest organization of veterans' clubs, the American Legion, has two million members, down from 3.3 million in 1946.” POPULAR CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS. Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Jaycees, and Optimists are among the well-known volunteer groups of the latter half of the twentieth century. Most have been reduced to a small fraction of their halcyon days. According to a 2020 article by Payal Gangishetti of Nonprofit Sector News, “The Jaycees, founded in 1920, is a leadership training and civic organization for people between the ages 18 and 40. [It's] peak membership was 360,000 in 1976 and today has just 12,000 members in the United States. Doc recalls the village Jaycees chapter building a playground near the river in the community of 1200 where he was raised in northern Wisconsin. “The park is still there,” noted Doc. “The Jaycees and other civic organizations' names and logos adorn the ‘Welcome to Town' signs, but for practical purposes, the organizations are extinct. Maybe their endowment funds their fee for the placards on the main roads heading into town?” LOSS OF VESTING TO BUILD COMMUNITY CONNECTEDNESS AND PERSONAL PURPOSE. As Doc researched the relationship between volunteering in civic organizations and community safety, the literature review was similar to driving a car that was out of alignment. Everything pulled in the direction of how the individual benefited from volunteering and much less was written about the collective benefit of society or of the community. Doc interprets this as false-memory solipsism. In other words, the core value of a civic organization (as written in numerous articles) is the fulfillment of each member. What's in it for me? Simply put, the literature review doesn't match Doc's experiences with civic organizations. BENEFITS TO VOLUNTEERS. The Mayo Clinic Health System says volunteering reduces stress levels and the risk of depression. Volunteers often learn valuable life and job skills while staying physically and mentally active. The Mayo Clinic cites a Longitudinal Study of Aging that concludes volunteers even live longer. Volunteers who have chronic or serious illnesses often experience less pain. HealthyPeople.gov -- a part of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion that is tasked with providing science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans -- agrees. Healthy People points out that clubs offer emotional support and create a sense of community. BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY. Beyond enriching each individual volunteer, projects benefit the greater community in the manifestations of parks or mentoring. Groups might focus on raking leaves at somebody's house. Build relationships - rally around people in need. A Lions Club in Windsor Locks (pop. 12,613), Connecticut ran the volunteer ambulance service in 2019! WHY THE DECLINE? The Loki argument is “The Internet” wiped out the organizations. But, this is recited by people who don't recall the days before the Internet. The across-the-board declines in membership appeared in the 1980s. Most recently, remote work mobility and pandemic cocooning might have sealed the fates for many civic organizations. These organizations have adapted to social media platforms, but that isn't a substitute for in vivo community enrichment activities. DOC'S CIVIC VOLUNTEERING. From 2004-2009, Doc served as a volunteer tour guide and handyman at historic Fort Winnebago Surgeons' Quarters in Portage, Wisconsin. With his Dad, he re-built the split rail fence and the well. Doc also volunteered in various roles for the monthly community lunch at Couper Hall. FOLLOW DR. PERRODIN: Twitter @SafetyPhD and subscribe to The Safety Doc YouTube channel & Apple Podcasts. Erin Gallagher is a senior sociology major at Beloit College and is currently an intern at two internships: one with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as a graphic design division officer, and the other at the Wisconsin State Public Defender's Office in Janesville, Wisconsin. Erin splits her time between schoolwork, her internships and at her job doing graphic design for her school's library. She wants to pursue a law degree in Juris Doctor and Master of Social Work (JD/MSW) and eventually work on rehabilitating people in the criminal justice system. Erin learned about the Digital Media Engagement (DME) Internship Program at the VA through a Facebook message that her uncle had sent her that made her interested to apply for a position on the graphic design team. Erin's willingness to branch out to her community of Veterans in Wisconsin and Michigan enabled her to diversify her experience and knowledge outside of her graphic design work. After completing several #VeteransOfTheDay graphics (VODs), Erin moved on to #ContentCalender graphics and logos, her favorite being Center for Women Veterans (CWV). Erin's father was in the Army for 26-27 years and she remembers going to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) centers with her family while growing up. In high school, she frequently volunteered at VFWs and at a nursing home that had many Veterans. Erin said that she enjoys talking to Veterans because of the opportunities she has at getting their stories heard through social work and at the internship. Her favorite project so far at the VA is the graphic she made for the Navy's birthday, despite her father potentially being shocked because “he's an Army man.” One of her favorite things at the internship is the interaction she gets with Veterans through interviews and also with other interns, supervisors and also being interviewed by Shannon for this podcast. By the end of her time at the VA internship, Erin hopes to have made plenty of connections that she can later refer to for help, advice and direction in the future, and have made friends to meet with and visit them in their cities.
NextPod ends the year off with an episode on what it's like working as a veterinarian in the army with a holistic veterinarian who served her country in the Army Veterinary Corps, Dr. Turnera CroomDr. Turnera Croom is a Holistic Veterinarian who served her country in the Army Veterinary Corps and retired as a Major. After working with the US Department of Agriculture, she decided to start her own company, Steadfast International LLC and opened Dr. Croom Mobile Veterinary Service, which allows her to provide professional, holistic veterinary care right inside people's homes. From its inception, Steadfast International has been committed not only to excellent veterinary care, but to the education of youth about potential careers in vet med. In 2016, Dr. Croom created her unique Future Veterinarian Program, where young students who are interested in animals and their care, meet with her in various pet supply stores to learn directly from a veterinarian what it takes in this exciting field. She is also working on expanding her new Ride-Along Program, which allows high school students to join her on actual house call veterinary appointments to learn what it really takes to deal with patients and their sometimes nervous owners. In addition, Dr. Croom has created her own brand of CBD pet products that she markets to her veterinary clients in person and on her website. She also serves in various capacities for organizations such as: Buddy 2 Buddy Veteran Volunteer Program, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and is a member of the Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement Advisory board.

A 'Lesson' From Vietnam col. writ. 8/23/07 (c) '07 Mumia Abu-Jamal Speaking before a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) group recently, US President George W. Bush evoked the slaughter, concentration camps, and devastation following the US pullout from Vietnam, to warn against the costs of precipitous withdrawal from the Iraq debacle. The argument boiled down to the recent conservative claim that if the US leaves Iraq now, it'll result in a societal bloodbath. There is something quite unseemly about a man who, when he was of age, declined to go to Vietnam, now arguing for its lessons before men who did go, some of whom have lost limbs. There is another odd, almost surreal quality to hearing the president who went to war on the most naked of lies, who authorized a bombing campaign called "shock and awe", who sent the entire region into a tizzy of maddening discontent, which led to the deaths of an estimated 500,000 Iraqis, argue about the costs of withdrawal. His "stay the course" is as empty an echo as was that of one of his presidential predecessors, Lyndon B. Johnson when he called for troop increases in Vietnam. What is missing from his convenient 'lesson' from Vietnam, is the reckoning of just how such pain, suffering and death was visited upon the Vietnamese by the American war. According to many sources, some 3 million Vietnamese were killed by US military forces (the number isn't clearer, simply because, as they were Asians, it wasn't deemed necessary for an accurate count). What Bush conveniently forgot to mention was the continuing costs of war facing Vietnam, because of the US use of toxic chemicals, such as the defoliant, Agent Orange. The US dropped over 10 million gallons of that poison on Vietnam, and the country still suffers from this aerial assault. According to Anthony Arnova's The Logic of Withdrawal (N. Y.: The New Press, 2006), some four million people suffered from this barrage, which has left an untold number with serious birth defects, and has caused an unprecedented environmental and ecological damage to the rural regions. A recent civil lawsuit against Dow Chemical (which created the weapon) was dismissed by US courts. Perhaps there are lessons to be learned from Vietnam after all, but not ones the Bush Regime may wish to address. Recent Bush Administration criticisms of Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki, that his government is 'ineffective', and doesn't listen enough to his American paymasters, sounds eerily similar to mumbled musings against South Vietnam's President Ngo Dinh Diem. The CIA 1st key military leaders know that the US was losing faith in their chosen puppet, and thus laid the groundwork for a military coup that not only toppled Diem's government, but led to his brutal assassination. Are we witnessing the opening stages of this 'lesson', being replayed in Iraq? Let us not think for a moment that the US doesn't prefer generals to presidents; or, as in Pakistan's Musharraf, both for the price of one. The history of 20th century Latin America has been one of an American love affair with generals, and -- yes, with death squads (many trained in the infamous School of the Americas --since renamed --at Fort Benning, Georgia). "Dubya", who was apparently a poor student of history, is not much better as a teacher, for if this is the only lesson learned from Vietnam, then he needs to go back to summer school. One lesson is that lies and scare tactics may lead people to war, but it won't keep them there once they learn the truth. (c) '07 maj
