Most doctors are trained to have answers. The higher the stakes, the more certainty is rewarded. But when those same doctors step into leadership roles, that certainty becomes the very thing that gets in their way. Dr. Debra Clary has spent nearly two decades developing leaders inside healthcare organizations, and what her research keeps showing is that the leaders with the highest curiosity have the highest performing teams. In this episode, she talks about what curiosity actually looks like in clinical environments, why resistance to change is biological rather than personal, and what happens when doctors who have spent careers being the expert in the room are suddenly asked to lead people who need to be heard. Three Key Takeaways 1. Certainty narrows curiosity, and that is where dangerous things happen. Dr. Clary's research found that leaders who created environments where questions were welcomed and the status quo could be challenged consistently outperformed those who did not. The same principle applies inside clinical environments. The doctor who is certain about how an encounter should go, how a system should work, or how a team should function stops asking questions, and the moment questions stop, so does learning. She is not arguing against clinical confidence. She is arguing that certainty and curiosity need to coexist, and that most leaders lean too heavily on one at the expense of the other. 2. Change resistance is biological, not personal, and leaders who understand that roll it out differently. When something new arrives, the brain's first job is to assess threat. It is not interested in efficiency or innovation. It is interested in whether this is safe. Dr. Clary coaches leaders to work with that biology rather than against it, which means being transparent about the reason for a change, showing people how they fit into the future, and inviting them to help solve the implementation rather than handing them a directive. The organizations that skip that step, she says, pay for it in resistance, delay, and disengagement. The ones that do not skip it tend to move faster than they expected. 3. Leadership and culture are synonymous. Dr. Clary's closing message is direct: so goes the top of the house, so goes the organization. A C-suite that does not model curiosity, collaboration, and psychological safety will not produce teams that offer those things either. For doctors moving into leadership roles, this reframe matters because it shifts the question from how do I get my team to perform differently to how do I need to show up differently first. The answer almost always involves asking more questions, saying I do not know more often, and being genuinely interested in what the person in front of you thinks. None of that is complicated. De 17 a 28 de Agosto, reúnem-se em Ulan Bator, na Mongólia, líderes governamentais, empresariais e da sociedade civil, cientistas, representantes dos povos indígenas, pastores e pequenos agricultores. Em debate: a desertificação, a degradação dos solos e a seca. Quais são os grandes desafios, nomeadamente em Angola, de onde nos fala o ambientalista José Silva? A Mongólia não foi escolhida ao acaso apra acolher este evento. Este país asiático é um dos paises mais afectados pela desertificação e degradação dos solos, com quase 77% das suas terras já degradadas. Em Luanda, José Silva é presidente da Juventude Ecológica Angola. O que contribui fortemente para a degradação dos solos, diz-nos, é nomeadamente a "utilização humana indevida" destas terras: O fenómeno da degradação dos solos está muito ligado à forma como nós, os humanos, utilizamos este recurso. Desde o sobrepastoreio, práticas agrícolas menos recomendáveis, quando não se faz rotação de cultura, a questão também das queimadas descontroladas ou excesso de queimadas, a utilização de produtos químicos, a deflorestação. Em alguns casos também as questões ligadas ao próprio clima, também podem ter implicância sobre a qualidade dos solos. RFI: A degradação dos solos acaba por transformar terras férteis em áreas áridas e desérticas. O que poderia funcionar quando se fala em lutar contra a seca? Há várias formas de se poder evitar estas situações, desde práticas agrícolas mais sustentáveis, mais recomendáveis. Necessita-se também combater práticas como a desflorestação, ou a retirada da cobertura vegetal. Em alguns casos, a reposição da cobertura vegetal, a criação de empregos para evitar que as populações que vivem em situação de pobreza e que muitas vezes recorrem a estes recursos para a sua sustentabilidade e no final acabam por degradar. Em Angola, por exemplo, assistimos a um negócio que já leva décadas, o negócio do carvão, que é muito lucrativo para algumas pessoas. E realmente, há comunidades no interior de várias regiões que são incentivadas a produzir carvão, acabam por degradar a componente vegetal, por derrubar árvores, porque são aliciadas por pessoas que estão nos centros urbanos. Torna-se, pois, um ciclo vicioso, já que essas comunidades têm dificuldades financeiras, sociais. Vão vendo nisso um negócio lucrativo. Naturalmente, é necessário o incentivo a práticas agrícolas sustentáveis, com financiamento, com apoio a pequenos agricultores. RFI: Portanto, soluções não faltam? Não, mas o ser humano é feito de práticas, de hábitos. E realmente há pessoas que estão neste negócio do carvão há décadas e depois vai ficar difícil poder mudar. Mas mesmo nas actividades agrícolas. Quando alguns camponeses não são acompanhados, quando a questão das queimadas, quando não há alguma orientação quanto ao sobre pastoreio. Depois há a questão da disputa de terras que também existem no país. Às vezes há áreas que deviam ser utilizadas para os pequenos agricultores ou pequenos da catividade pecuária. São ocupadas, se calhar por grandes fazendas. Também esta disputa por terras acaba por depois ver o sobre-pastoreio, uso excessivo da pouca terra que têm e acabam por degradar também um solo. RFI: Segundo a ONU, a degradação dos solos já afeta até 40% das terras do mundo, o que prejudica milhares de pessoas e o problema gera impactos de longo alcance, na produção de alimentos, na disponibilidade de água, nos meios de subsistência e na estabilidade económica. O que espera com esta COP17? Nós temos dito que as COP's valem o que valem. É sempre um momento para discussão. Há oportunidades para a sociedade civil poder interagir e fazer networking. Mas eu penso que, do ponto de vista político, tem havido poucos marcos nos últimos tempos. Apesar de ter sido assinado o Acordo de Paris, depois fica-se muito engatado nas questões da aplicação prática, nas questões dos Estados poderem assumir politicamente os compromissos que assinam. Isso ainda é um grande desafio. Depois também temos o desafio do financiamento. Essa velha história dos países desenvolvidos que acabam por criar maior impacto com as alterações climáticas, os países menos desenvolvidos e que têm que financiar alguns projectos não encontram o caminho certo para a negociação, para pôr em prática aquilo que se é discutido. Então vamos ver se esta próxima COP traz resultados diferentes, sobretudo do ponto de vista prático.

Cada semana, además de mirar al cielo que es lo que todos haremos por el gran eclipse que protagonizará este verano, intentaremos asomarnos a la ciencia con expertos que acompañen a Nuño Domínguez en su búsqueda de respuestas y explicaciones.Dice María Martinón, directora del Centro de Investigación de la Evolución Humana, que "en Atapuerca tenemos la enciclopedia abierta por capítulos diferentes", porque hay once yacimientos abiertos de distintas épocas, en las que se pueden encontrar (como de hecho se encuentran) rastros inesperados de especies de homínidos desconocidas. Es un lugar "donde hay licencia para soñar" con hallazgos paleontológicos de todo tipo, ya que han batido su récord de humano más antiguo ya tres veces. Nuño Domínguez comenta que cada paleontólogo da una respuesta diferente a qué es lo que hace única a los seres humanos, miembros de la única especie de homínido que queda en el planeta. La de María es nuestro altísimo grado de prosociabilidad. En una época en la que, desde el poder, se expresa tanto desprecio por la empatía, reconforta recordar que en las simas donde reposan nuestros restos más antiguos, quedan registros de la compasión que desde siempre hemos sentido los unos por los otros. Un fósil con cicatrices es evidencia de que hubo dolor, pero también hubo cuidados.
Ana Pantoja Pérez, bióloga del Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana y paleontóloga del proyecto Deathrevol del mismo CENIEH, ha estado revisando junto a un equipo multidisciplinar, los restos del fósil Qafzeh 25, un humano moderno arcaico, hallado en la cueva de Qafzeh (Israel) y datado hace entre 92 000 y 145 000 años. Los restos de los otros 26 individuos que estaban junto a Qafzeh 25, han sido revisados observando el comportamiento mortuorio que tuvieron a la hora de enterrarlos, lo que indica que tenían consciencia de la muerte. En concreto Qafzeh 25 había sufrido un golpe traumático en la cara que le había alcanzado la mandíbula dejándole una marca en el hueso, pero había logrado sobrevivir, al igual que un niño de 11 años cuyos restos indican que sufrió un golpe en la cabeza que le causaron daños neurológicos. pero que logró sobrevivir un tiempo gracias al cuidado de su comunidad.
