For Veterans Month, Midday Mobile welcomes U.S. Army veteran Lt. Col. Marcus Young — and this one feels like family. Marcus shares the hilarious story of how he thought he joined the Army a year before he actually did, what inspired his 40 years of service, and how the spirit of the military (and Mobile's veteran community) has evolved since 1989. From ROTC roots to National Guard service, Young reflects on discipline, leadership, and why he still believes every young person could benefit from the lessons the military teaches.
This week, we honor veterans of long ago, as well as those who still live and walk among us. Their sacrifice has helped to secure the freedoms that we enjoy today. One of the key features of American democracy is civilian control of the military. We, the people, elect the Congress which controls the military's budget, conducts oversight, and declares war, as well as the the president, who serves as the military's Commander in Chief. President Donald Trump, in his second term in office, has signaled a return to the military's core mission. Here to talk about what that return looks like is Wilson Beaver, an Army Veteran and Senior Policy Advisor, here at the Heritage Foundation.—Follow Wilson Beaver on X: https://x.com/WilsonCBeaverMore about Heritage: www.heritage.org—Have thoughts? In this powerful Veterans Week episode, The MisFitNation welcomes US Army Veteran Tammy Flake — a leader, advocate, businesswoman, and champion for veteran wellness and community connection. Tammy served from 2004-2008 as a Unit Supply Specialist and Arms Room Specialist with the 3-101 Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, supporting the Apache helicopter mission. She earned her Air Assault qualification and deployed to Iraq (2005–2006), where she played a key role in maintaining readiness and equipping soldiers for their missions. Today, Tammy brings that same discipline and compassion into her life as a wife, mother of five, entrepreneur, VFW Post Commander, and Utah VFW State Surgeon. She is driven to combat veteran suicide and works closely with Heroes Haven, which provides mentorship, connection, and healing for veterans seeking purpose after service. This conversation is about service, identity, transition, family, leadership, and hope — and the belief that no veteran should ever be left behind. This week on The ToosDay Crue, hosts Stephen and Jake sit down with US Army Veteran David Parks, a man whose journey from chaos in Iraq to peace in the countryside is a story of grit, resilience, and self-discovery. David served with Bravo Company 296 in Iraq (2009) as a mechanic stationed at FOB Warhorse, facing the grind of deployment, injury, and leadership challenges firsthand. After the Army, he earned a degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice, conducting research on the correlation between alcohol use, PTSD, and aggression among veterans. Today, David embraces life off the grid—restoring cars, attending car shows, and enjoying the simple joys of country living. His story reminds us that healing doesn't always happen on a schedule—and sometimes, purpose is found under the hood of a project car.

Welcome back to the show, dear listeners! I am joined in this episode by Tristian Smith, former Army officer, author, and Nebraska CASA volunteer who grew up in the foster care system living in nearly 30 different homes from ages 8 to 18. After experiencing abuse and instability in the system, Tristian went on to graduate college, serve in the military, and now advocates for children in foster care via his volunteer work. Throughout our conversation, Tristian shares his personal story - how he was placed in foster care after his mother passed away and how he and his brother were abused by their uncle. He describes the lack of consistency and support that he faced, with frequent school and home changes and feeling "invisible" in the system. Tristian highlights the importance of having caring adult mentors, noting that if he had a CASA volunteer early on, he likely would have been removed from his uncle's home much sooner. Listen as Tristian credits a few key mentors he met as a young adult in college for helping him develop the resilience and drive to achieve his goals, including graduating, joining the military, and eventually writing a book about his experiences. He stresses the need for foster parents to provide more than just the basics but also true care, compassion and communication. As a CASA volunteer, Tristian is now dedicated to being that consistent, supportive adult whom he wished he had growing up, and he encourages other former foster youth to get involved in advocacy work as it can provide a powerful perspective. Tristian's story is truly an inspiring example of how mentorship and a sense of purpose can help youth overcome adversity and reach their full potential, despite the challenges of the foster care system. I hope that you enjoy my conversation with Tristian, and, if you do, please be sure to grab a copy of his book, Against All Odds! Highlights: [1:20] - Hear how Tristian overcame childhood abuse and became an author and CASA volunteer. [5:02] - After cycling through 30 foster homes, Tristian finally thrived in therapeutic care and pursued multiple master's degrees. [7:19] - Tristian reveals how constant relocation hindered his ability to form long-term connections. [9:56] - Tristan believes that stricter foster parent standards and stronger empathy could have spared him years of neglect. [12:31] - Foster parent training overlooks communication, focusing instead on managing trauma rather than genuine connection. [13:06] - Tristian argues that foster parents need to engage children with love, learning, and compassion rather than screens. [16:36] - We discover how Tristian lost a loving foster home after a failed adoption and never regained that stability. [19:18] - Via discipline and leadership, Tristian's military service changed his trauma into self-reliance. [22:59] - Never having imagined such success, Tristian now inspires foster youth with lived experience and advocacy. [25:47] - Tristian credits two mentors he met as a young adult who became true parental figures in his life. [27:43] - Tristian encourages both foster youth and caregivers to build accountability, empathy, and resilience for success. S.O.S. (Stories of Service) - Ordinary people who do extraordinary work
Send us a textA uniform shouldn't cost a parent their child. We sit down with retired Army officer, attorney, and parent advocate Erhan Bettistani to unpack how military service collides with family court—and why a little-known administrative process, the Family Advocacy Program's Incident Determination Committee (FAP IDC), can tilt custody decisions without basic due process. Erhan brings research published in Family Court Review and Military Law Review, plus firsthand stories from Warrior Family Advocacy, to show how “substantiated” findings spill into civilian courts, inflame stress, and even factor into veteran suicide risk.Across an hour, we trace four forces that often work against service members: media narratives of extremes, the stigma of deployments and constant PCS moves, assumptions around PTSD and mental health, and the shadow-court mechanics of FAP IDC. We compare FAP procedures to the old Title IX campus model—informal, opaque, and vulnerable to error—and highlight reforms that state courts and the Department of Education have already embraced: clear notice, access to the evidence file, counsel in the room, cross-examination, written findings, and recorded hearings. The takeaway is stark but hopeful: the Department of Defense can integrate these protections now, without waiting on Congress, and still support victims with clinical care while improving fairness for all parties. We also get practical. If you're navigating divorce or custody as a military parent, you'll hear strategies for documenting stability, addressing PTSD stigma, planning around deployments, and securing counsel early in the right jurisdiction. Erhan explains how Warrior Family Advocacy funds initial attorney consults and offers grounded guidance so you can breathe, plan, and protect your bond with your child. Abuse must be taken seriously—and so must process. Better rules mean better outcomes for families, for justice, and for the mental health of those who serve. If this conversation resonates, follow the show, share it with a military family, and leave a review with your biggest question about fixing FAP. Your voice helps push the right reforms forward.Resources & Links: •

In this episode, Melanie shares how her military background shaped her vision for peaceful, child-centered learning, why she took the leap to start her own school, and how she rebuilt her program after the challenges of the pandemic. Melanie's story is an inspiring look at resilience, innovation, and the entrepreneurial spirit driving today's microschool movement. *** Sign up for Kerry's free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at edentrepreneur.org.
