Tune into the newest episode of our Energy Works Podcast, where science meets spirit to help you heal, energize, and thrive. In this solo episode, Lauren shares the story behind the first “Field Trip” she hosted through WhatWouldLouDo.com. This is a special project born of grief over her beloved puppy, Lou. Inspired in part by The Telepathy Tapes podcast and her exploration of near-death experiences and post-death communication, she introduces “the Field.” She explains that the field is an interconnected energetic space where guidance and signs can be received when we're quiet, grounded, and open.Lauren explains how these community Field Trips help build a shared “morphic field” to strengthen intuitive awareness, often through symbols, sensations, and subtle signals rather than words. While virtual learning has become more prevalent since 2020, the founders of Banyan Global Learning have been offering digital learning experiences for over 20 years. Some people are excited about the possibilities technology offers. Others are backpedaling or worrying that tech does more harm than good. Like most things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The outcomes depend on how experiences (both virtual and in-person) are designed and how learners are asked to engage. Passive consumption rarely leads to meaningful learning, but well-structured virtual experiences can support problem solving, perspective-taking, and authentic connection across contexts. Not as a replacement to in-person experiences, but as an additional option to provide opportunities that wouldn't otherwise be possible. That's why I invited Seth Fleischauer to De Facto Leaders to talk about how to use virtual field trips to connect with peers and learn about cultures and experiences worldwide.Seth Fleischauer is the President of Banyan Global Learning, which he founded in 2008 after teaching elementary school with NYC Teaching Fellows. Banyan pioneered daily international EFL distance learning and has since expanded to train teachers and educate K-12 students across three continents. His programs focus on teaching digital and cultural competencies through a global lens and have delivered over 40,000 live teaching sessions. Seth has also hosted over 100 podcast episodes, including Make It Mindful and Why Distance Learning? In this episode, I mentioned Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that gives speech pathologists a framework for building language skills needed to thrive in school, social situations, and daily life. From senior trips to Disney where kids try to sneak into their boyfriend's rooms (and chaperones hire a security guard for bed check), to the nightmare of paper check-ins before cell phones, to the student who somehow got locked inside SeaWorld after "going to the bathroom." And just when you think it can't get worse, the crew tells the story of a preschool pool trip that ended in disaster when a kid pulled out a tiny bat and started swinging on older kids… and the class got kicked out in 15 minutes. Plus: the chaos of chaperones getting "lost," kids with poopy pants moods, the logistics teachers handle that no one ever sees, and a legendary personal field trip confession involving tobacco dip, a bus ride, and a moment that became school lore forever. Odetta was one of the defining voices of American folk music. Though she had been trained in classical music, she was drawn to spirituals, work songs, traditional ballads, and blues. These songs told the stories of true life - of struggle and of those that overcame oppression. Odetta used her theater training and deep resonant voice to bring these messages to life. Her work inspired later artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, served as a soundtrack for the social reforms of the 1960s, and led to her honorary title as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement." A spicy LinkedIn post about field trips lit up the internet—and this episode is the why behind the fire.In this conversation, Peter and Alli unpack the unpopular opinion that traditional high school field trips often miss the mark. Not because experiences don't matter—but because too many trips are disconnected, passive, and designed as checkboxes instead of catalysts for growth. This episode goes far beyond buses and permission slips. It's about intentional design. You'll hear:- Why most high school field trips don't actually change student direction or outcomes- The difference between career awareness and career readiness—and why timing matters- How “field trips” should evolve into field experiences, micro-experiences, and real community work- Powerful real-world stories involving Hyatt, Coca-Cola, Calamos, and students performing in front of real executives- Why reflection, durable skills, and value creation matter more than tours and sit-and-gets- How districts can reduce burnout by shifting from isolated teacher efforts to system-wide experience designThis is not an anti-field-trip rant. It's a challenge to rethink them.If you care about student engagement, work-based learning, durable skills, or connecting school to real life—this episode is for you.Head to www.disrupteducationpodcast.com for more!

In this special episode of Why Distance Learning, the tables turn—Seth Fleischauer steps into the guest seat as co-hosts Tami Moehring and Allyson Mitchell interview him about the purpose, design, and future of Global Learning Live, Banyan Global Learning's next-generation experiential global learning program. They explore what authentic global learning really requires in today's classrooms—and why the medium of live virtual learning matters more than ever. Most schools want to build cultural competence, empathy, and real-world communication skills, but:Finding reliable global partners is inconsistent and often falls apart mid-year.Language learners rarely get opportunities to use English in meaningful, real-world contexts.Teachers lack simple, low-prep ways to bring global learning into existing schedules.Field trips and international travel are expensive and inaccessible for most students. The result? Global learning remains an aspiration, not a system. However, Banyan's Global Learning Live is structured, scalable model that connects students worldwide through live field trips, global collaborations, and authentic showcase moments. Seth shares how 20 years of partnership with Tsai Hsing School led to the creation of an experiential cycle that prepares students not only for academic success, but for a rapidly changing, interconnected world. What the program delivers:Live Virtual Field Trips Bringing students into real places—Portland bridges, Renaissance fairs, and more—with authentic “whoa” moments that make learning unforgettable.Global Student Collaborations Cohorts, not brittle partnerships—designed to reduce dropout risk, increase diversity, and ensure ELL accessibility.Authentic Purpose for Language Learning English isn't a worksheet—it becomes the tool students use to communicate across borders and share their original ideas.A Low-Overhead, High-Impact Design Schools can join four-week pilots with one live class per week + a showcase and asynchronous global exchange.ELL-Ready, Teacher-Friendly Materials Built to make participation meaningful for all levels, not just native speakers.Impact to date:More than 42,000 student years of distance learning delivered.Students report increased confidence expressing original ideas in English.Meaningful growth in perspective-taking, curiosity, and cultural competence.Practical steps educators can take—whether or not they join the pilot.1. Bring the world into your classroom through personal live video. Use your own life, community, or experiences as cultural text. Even small shifts build perspective-taking.2. Integrate short, purposeful global exchanges. Asynchronous collaboration—sharing artifacts, reflections, or questions—can be powerful without live schedules aligning.3. Join the Global Learning Live Spring Pilot. Schools receive a free 4-week experience including:One weekly live sessionA live virtual field tripA collaborative artifact exchangeAccess to a global cohort of classrooms across continents4. Start planning for sustained global engagement. Seth describes the future vision: a global network with diverse cohorts, built-in supports for ELL learners, and eventually a FERPA-compliant platform designed for authentic collaboration at scale.Episode LinksGlobal Learning Live – Spring Pilot Sign-UpCILC.org – Schedule Virtual Field Trips, Including Banyan's Bridges of Portland Trip

Get ready for a Holy Week episode packed with surprises! Arch and Pastor Josh kick things off with a laugh-worthy story about 4AM wakeups and a mysterious trip (spoiler: you'll have to come to Easter to find out why). But it's not long before the conversation takes a powerful turn, diving deep into Jesus' trial, His unexpected silence before Pilate, and the jaw-dropping release of Barabbas. Why would a crowd choose a criminal over the innocent Son of God? And what does our response to Jesus' sacrifice say about us? Through thoughtful reflections and personal moments, Arch and Josh explore the shocking choices of both Pilate and Barabbas, and what it means for each of us today. Will we, like Barabbas, accept the gift of freedom Jesus offers, or turn away? Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation that ends on an unforgettable note—one day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is the King of Kings.
