Joel Rosenman, who conceived and co-created the Woodstock Festival in 1969, joins John Landecker to reminisce about the first Woodstock Festival and other memories from it.
Over four days in 1969, more than half a million people gathered on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York for what would become known as one of the most legendary music festivals of all time—Woodstock. Though festivals had been celebrated since antiquity, Woodstock helped cement the music festival as an important part of North American culture and a thriving industry. Hear how new ideas, technology and design have transformed festivals into the immersive experiences they are today while providing spaces for human belonging and community. Featuring Joel Rosenman, Gina Arnold, Christina McBride, Stephen Lieberman and Dede Flemming. For more on the podcast go to delltechnologies.com/trailblazers
The genius marketing of Woodstock 1969 by any marketer will tell you to set goals, and the four entrepreneurs behind Woodstock ‘69 were optimistic with theirs. John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld, and Michael Lang created Woodstock Ventures with success in mind. They were all 27 or under, with just two being involved in the music industry in some way, shape, or form. They mapped out their marketing strategy and had the best worldwide musicians in mind to play. With their hard work, a few ads, and word of mouth, they expected a turnout of 40,000. They wanted a turnout of around 200,000 and planned for that. About 500,000 people showed up.Time to answer a quick 4-question survey? Check out a brand new episode of This Is Happening! This week, Eric Morris, Doug Budin, and special guest co-host Georgie Leahy sit down with Mick Richards to discuss his new documentary CREATING WOODSTOCK. Full disclosure: Eric produced this film with Mick. Mick Richards attended Woodstock as a teenager in 1969 and didn't think much more about it until years later when his son learned about it in school asked him what it was all about. Mick started reading about it and found the backstory of how the festival came together to be fascinating, so he began a decades-long process of making a documentary about it. The result is his new film CREATING WOODSTOCK now available on Amazon, iTunes, Vimeo and more. Mick interviewed everyone who played a significant role in putting the original Woodstock festival together and his film offers the most comprehensive account available of how Woodstock became an iconic event that defined a generation. CREATING WOODSTOCK uses rare archival footage and exclusive interviews with the people behind Woodstock including Joel Rosenman, John Roberts, Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, John Morris, Mel Lawrence, Bill Belmont, Richie Havens, and Arlo Guthrie. Mick tells us about all about making the film and what it's been like to release it for Woodstock's 50th Anniversary. Check out this EXTRA special episode of This Is Happening! Co-hosts Eric Morris, Doug Budin, and Georgie Leahy interview John Morris about his incredible career producing rock concerts beginning with the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, opening the Fillmore East with Bill Graham, heading up production at Woodstock, opening the Rainbow Theater in London, and more! Full disclosure, John is Eric's uncle and we talk about the new documentary CREATING WOODSTOCK on which they collaborated with director Mick Richards and which comes out in August to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock. Check out www.creatingwoodstock.com for more info about the film. John has led a fascinating life and tells great stories about managing the Fillmore East - including helping Jimi Hendrix with a wardrobe malfunction onstage, plying Janis Joplin with Southern Comfort when she was freaking out about having to follow an electrifying set by BB King at her first NYC show, pranking Jim Morrison by stranding him in the rafters as payback for the Doors playing a show for a rival concert promoter, and much more. John also talks about how he got involved in putting Woodstock together and how it became "a free concert from now on" as he announced from the stage in August 1969. John regales us with other adventures including the Grateful Dead spiking his Coca Cola can with acid at a Central Park concert and seeing Eric Clapton return to performing supporting Leon Russell at London's Rainbow Theater after a few years away. And he talks about shifting out of producing rock concerts and into producing art shows, including: Objects of Art at El Museo in Santa Fe August 8-11: www.objectsorartsantafe.com and The Antique American India Art Show Santa Fe at El Museo August 13-16: www.antiqueindianartshow.com If you're near New York, you can see John speaking about Woodstock following a screening of CREATING WOODSTOCK at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - on the site of Yasgur's Farm, the site of the original Woodstock festival. https://www.bethelwoodscenter.org/events/producing-woodstock-panel-and-film-the-people-who-created-the-festival Or if you're in Los Angeles, CREATING WOODSTOCK is screening at the Grammy Museum in DTLA on August 12 followed by a panel including John, along with Woodstock producer Joel Rosenman, artist coordinator Bill Belmont, and CREATING WOODSTOCK's director Mick Richards and producer Eric Morris. https:/www.grammymuseum.org/events/detail/creating-woodstock Enjoy!
